Breakfast of champions - Christopher Hitchens
I like that
Ahhh brings back memories
Chris brought me here.
Without doubt the best value for money whisky. Love this...so much in the bottle for so little cost!
it's the perfect step up from the Red in quality and taste, whilst keeping the price reasonable
As a bourbon guy jumping into the world of single malts and blended I was really impressed with this. Nice balance of sweet, fruit with some smoke and oak, pretty balanced and smooth. Massive step up from a lot of crap you get in that prize range on offer can get for£20-23 in the Uk.
I have a lot of bad things to say about JW in general but the black is genuinely one of the range that is worth the money. Nice drop
First scotch I’ve ever tried. I like it! I like the Red Label too, but much prefer this over the red
Total agree, always shied away from Johnnie Walker after trying the RED but this isn't bad at all especially at the price point.
Ah man, the red really isn't good. It might have been once. I can see how it would put someone off!
I grew up in KY, and being a bourbon guy, I bought a bottle of 18 yr old Gold label JW not to long ago and to this day an I know it's not bourbon, but scotch, an I have to say to this day it is 1 of the best whiskeys I've ever tried. Just bought a bit of the black label today and 1 thing I've noticed about JW is it has that smokey cigar like Smell and after taste. For those hard core on ice guys like myself who like to enjoy a cigar with a glass of either bourbon or scotch, JW hits that nail on the head. Whenever you smell the black label it reminded me of walking into the playhouse pool hall downtown years ago whenever the entire pool hall would be filled with smoke. It's a gritty tough guy kinda whiskey with those char notes, and perfect balance of a tobacco and toffey kind of feel. JW is definitely some good scotch. I'm a life time fan.
Sounds like a good one to try if the price is right, Vin. I recently bought the Green Label and recommend it. Cheers! 🥃
The green is my favourite of the range. I'll definitely be looking to cover it relatively soon 🥃🥃
The green is on another level but the black very drinkable too
A great balanced Scotch at a decsent price... a good "go to scotch" Many famous people in history have loved it!
For me, it’s definitely Johnnie Walker’s Double Black ❤🎉
It's almost perfect. Really love it.
Classic Guard Whisky ™️
Just had this for New Year's celebrations 2021 - really worth it. Great review! Happy new year's blessings all the way from Philippines.
A good dram to see in the new year for sure
A good blended whisky, I'd happily get another of JWB, especially at the £20 price point I picked up my first bottle. A nice smokiness to it, but like you said, it's not really peated, more charred, and a good rounded flavour. Also I like the music you use for these videos Vin, suits and complements the whole review style and vibe - sort of smoothing and relaxed! 👍
Thanks for that! I don't often get positive feedback on the music. I've even had people tell me they hate it haha!
Vanilla caramel candy. I highly recommend to anyone trying scotch for the first time.
Love your channel. Non-pretentious reviews, straight to the point. I agree, I always tell people new to scotch, JW Black is the best bang for your buck. Perfectly balanced Scotland in a glass. I would love to see your take on the Johnnie Walker Double Black. As a fellow Smokey/Peaty Scotch "snob", I think the double black is a fantastic value.
Thanks for the feedback. It's always nice to hear people are liking my content. I'll always try to keep it no nonsense here
these, red label and black label, find to be the best mixer whiskey, I generally like to mix it with ice and red bull, no one I have known has ever lioked that mixed, lot of people despise it, but I quite love it. So these are the best whiskeys I can mix with redbull without feeling guilty of ruining scotch whiskey. :)
Glad you have reviewed the Black label. A good all rounder with its smoke and fruitiness and great value especially when on offer at around £22. I have noticed Morrisons regularly have the Gold and Green label on offer at £30. Great value stuff
I really do need to get a bottle of the green to review. It's the other bottle in the range that I'd happily have about all the time, I just don't have one right now!
@@NoNonsenseWhiskystill on offer at Morrisons.
Here's hoping that deal lasts til pay day 😂
@@NoNonsenseWhisky lol. I know the feeling! So many bottles to buy but so little money to spend.
Definitely. Bought too much this month already
Enjoyed your review.
Went to local supply for a Highland Park 12 and they were out so I thought I’d give the JWB a go seeing they were within a 10 difference. In my opinion by comparison the JW taste thin and fairly basic on the notes to the HP12.
The JWB would be a good intro for newbies but I would take 1 Highland park over 5 johnnys any day, in other words I feel it’s over priced for what your getting. The power of branding
Nice review man, When I first tried it I thought it would be shit but it actually surprised me, even with a couple pieces of ice it brought out some nice notes, not bad for the price
It's one of those drams that can withstand just about any way you want to drink it. Good one to keep about
Great review! JW Black is one of the whiskys where I got my start in appreciating whisk(e)ys/bourbons. JW Green is my favorite so far but the price point is a bit high (in U.S.) to keep it on the shelf while I am still trying out new whiskys. But I always have a bottle of black on the shelf and it never disappoints.
The green is my preferred too and I'll definitely cover it at some point.
I got one of those 4x 20cl boxes a while back to try more of their range. Jo and I kind of agreed that we liked the cheaper end of their range over their 'premium' blends! Been a long time since I tried the Red Label but it kind of put me off the JW brand for a while.
Nice run through - the black label is a safe bet without breaking the bank imo 🥃👍
I wanted to get that set but like 80% of the cost is for the Blue bottle and I don't really like it that much.
@@NoNonsenseWhisky Yeah I was expecting more from the Blue and Platinum 🙁
The blue is really for people who want to show off I think
@@NoNonsenseWhisky Being 'fancy' and having good taste almost seem to be diametrically opposed 😜
I've yet to try this one yet, Vin, but it sounds really good. Great notes brother, cheers!
For its price it’s pretty good. Worth a shot!
Here in the USA a bottle of red label is about $25, black label $45, double black is around $60, green label $75, and blue label is around $250. Green Label is my favorite if I'm just gonna have it on the rocks.
Green label is definitely my favourite too. Looks like you have a similar price curve to us
Just grabbed a bottle and wanted to see some reviews. I’m not a whisky guy by any stretch of the imagination but I agree with the review, and it kind of makes me want to get into this world. It’s definitely good!!!
You're on the slippery slope now my friend 😂 welcome to the whisky world!
I just watched a show on Netflix where they drank whiskey in meetings and they made it look tasty too drink
Got myself a bottle of black for new years and some nice cigarr never tried the black before hope i like it. :)
what i personally like is that unlike other blends its not sweet despite the significant grain content. in fact its quite dry with hints of citrus. great value whiskey duty free 1000 ml about $65 AUD.
I think what I like about it is the slight smokiness. Not a lot, just a touch
Went to Waitrose today intending to repeat buy Talisker Skye at £38. Unfortunately they'd put the price back up to £46. But JW Black was down to £24. Worth a sniff! Tried it this evening and it is very nice. Yes, that smokiness which lingers a little, and a quite intense flavour. My comparison this evening was an inch or so left in a bottle of Aldi Glen Marnoch Speyside. Your comment about wateriness is right. The JWB has a certain density to its flavour while the Glen Marnoch is that little bit...well, thin or watery. The JWB survives a splash of water or soda intact and does that magical thing of revealing more flavours. I am still amazed at how polite everyone is in Waitrose. It's so weird. Is it even legal?
The Black is perfectly fine, and it always bugs me when people rag on it just to be trendy.
If you get a chance, try the Green Label. It's the only Blended Malt in the range and ups the smoke a little. IMO its the best of the range
Johnnie walker Black is my "every day" go to blended scotch. Hard to beat 12 years age for that price and flavor profile, perfect for sipping neat or made into cocktails/ scotch and soda. Cheers!
Just as a side note in the USA I was able to purchase a bottle of JW Black label for 22$ American, a damn fine bargain in today's economy in my humble opinion.
No arguments here! I'd happily have a bottle of black around all the time
Good review thanks. Sums up the JW black pretty well. There's a bottle here as a follow on in an evening after my summer G&Ts. Nice easy sipping for summer months I find. I'm a bit more fussy about what dram I have in the colder months but summer like something long and cold to keep hydrated or easy drinking spirit like the JW black. Thanks
Not one of my favourites by any stretch, but it's certainly not as bad as some people make out. It's a decent dram and like you I generally have a bottle kicking about, it's good enough to drink neat and cheap enough (when I can get it on a deal) for a mixer if one is required, so why not?
Exactly that! I'll h always have bottles thatll beat this, but sometimes you just want a good dram that doesn't cost the earth 👌
No Nonsense Whisky If you just need a drink, try Chopin vodka. It's a quality potato vodka and thus good when served neat and warm. Something most vodkas can't say. My standards are high, but on the other hand there's need to beat up your taste buds with bad whisky.
Got my self a bottle of black and a bottle of jack Daniels old 7 with some nice cigarrs never tried black before hope i like it will enjoy it on new years eve. 🙂
Sounds like quite the night! Hopefully you had a good one
@@NoNonsenseWhisky yea all was good. And also likes the black very much its a very solid wiskey for the price point. 🙂
I like JW black but would rather spend the extra couple of dollars on the double black. Only because it has more peat flavor
I've actually never tried the double black, but I expect I'll have the same opinion when I do
Nice review! Been wanting to try this as well as the green label.
The green label is my next favourite! I don't have a bottle to review right now, but I'll get on it at some point!
@@NoNonsenseWhisky The green is £30 on Amazon at the moment which is pretty good value.
Ah man. Fingers crossed it still is on pay day!
Green label is worth buying. It is my favorite whisky so far.
You describe JW Black just as the way it is, this is no nonsense like alot of other reviews on youtube, tbh.
Thank you 🙏
And sometimes when I finish my glass I let the rest sit for a few mins or untili gets a bit sticky, there I find a strong vanilla / malt on the nose. Lovely 😁👍
Just picked up a bottle in the Los Angeles area for $22.99. Could have picked up a 2nd on special for $12 off. I always have a bottle of Black Label on the bar. It’s a hard to beat value blend.
Absolute bargain. I'd have been really tempted by the deal too
Finally getting round to reviewing the JW black label I got you then 😉
I thought Ma got it 😂
Rude lol
Would you expect anything less?
Nice one Vin! The black label is like the security net of scotch whisky for me. It’s not something I look forward to having, but I always know it’s there at any bar to save me from having vodka 😂
Ha! Definitely. That and Jameson's are the two you can always rely on to be in a bar
First sip i took tasted like a cigar!
Johnnie Walker Black Label is currently my favorite scotch.
Never tried black label. I started with double black and loved it. Never saw a reason to try anything else.
The only JW I recommend is Green Label 15. Black Label is too expensive for what it is. Not that malts are always the better value, but there are more than a few malts which I prefer which cost less than Black Label. Deanston Virgin Oak, Tomatin Legacy, all of the Glen Moray Classics and their 12 y.o., and Loch Lomand 12, all cost less than Black Label where I live. The only Blended Scotch I enjoy and is a great value is Teacher's Highland Cream.
It's funny how the different markets around the world can be. I rarely see those you mention at the same price at the Black. Aside from maybe the GM range. I should really get them
@@NoNonsenseWhisky 750ml JWBL12 sells for between $35-40 (sometimes more!) USD around NYC, and that's nuts imo. All of those malts I listed sell for under $30, the Glen Moray Classics, under $25. There are also some independent bottlings & mystery malts, like Finlaggan Old Reserve which sell for under $30.
@@NoNonsenseWhisky What a bottle of JWBL12 sells for in Manhattan... www.sherry-lehmann.com/blended-scotch-spirit/2542/Johnnie-Walker-Black-Label-12-Yr-80-pf
@@NoNonsenseWhisky Which would you rather have? bestbuyliquors.com/loch-lomond-12-year-scotch-whisky.html
At that price, the loch Lomond 12 wins hands down. It's around 40-45 dollars equivalent here
Floyd and Scotch - Superb combination
Absolutely 🌈
I was not a JW fan until the black. I absolutely love this stuff❤️
It is crazy how much of a difference there is from red to black. Red is nasty...meant for mixed drinks. Black is what I drink straight on the rocks. Love it.
Bought one on special (in Australia) for $44 ... have bought another 6 since then. Agree entirely with you Vin. It's not Cragganmore or Talisker single malt, but it's the best value blend for the money. I too will always have it on the shelf.
That's a great price! Especially when you consider the miles it's travelled.
Might have to pick a bottle up next, it's about 21e here.
Cheers Alex. That's a decent price. And it's a quality drop for the price
It's one of those dependable whiskies. No matter which country you are in or which bar you are in, you can always get a dram of Black Label.
It's like the chicken nugget of the whisky world 😂
It sure has a fantastic flavor
I really wish they would put some more info on the bottle. I find the Red Label undrinkable yet I LOVE the Black label. To someone who is unfamiliar with Scotch, this can be very confusing and if they try the Red first it may ruin the brand for them altogether.
I wholeheartedly agree. I know the Red specifically had seen off a lot of potential whisky fans.
Really loved the game of thrones johnnie walkers so just picked up a bottle of black lable, hope its good and im gonna try the blue label next
A good solid review Vin, personally I really like the Johnnie Walker Double Black with that caramel goodness with slight amount of peat, but am willing try the JWB to see if there is a difference. Also, I wonder if the the Jane Walker is the same as the Johnnie Walker Black or is there some twist. Cheers!
The double black is better so I think you'll still prefer it. I ignored the Jane Walker, perhaps I shouldn't have 🤔
Yeah Red label is a Big No, Black Label is my Fav 🥃 ♠️
I appreciate your review! I thought so too, until they raised the price considerably during the last two years. I think that at the current price tag (at least here on continental europe), it's no longer a good value. I would suggest to consider an update.
Could be a good shout! It's been a long time since this review. Curious though, what is the price near you?
I believe you and I have two different black labels... mine came in a box with a latch on it.
And was way more than what you paid.
I feel like I was shafted.
Update; clicked the wrong video...I have JW platinum label.
Sometimes they do these special editions that inevitably cost more and give you a box you can keep. Personally, I think all that nonsense takes away from what is really important, the liquid. So yeah, I think you probably did get shafted
Ahh! That makes much more sense!
I actually haven't tried the platinum but I heard its pretty decent
@@NoNonsenseWhisky 😑, i'll live. Smh... thanks for your input.
Whisky Mac - whisky and Stones Green Ginger wine cocktail...this is the whisky for it 👍
Makes sense to me folks,,👏👏👏🇬🇧
The voice of reason 🤣🥃
Vin what would you say the red has that black doesn't?
The black is obviously much smoother and nicer to drink but I find it lacks the "peatiness?" of the red. I enjoy red as a mixer more then the black.
The only thing I know about the differences is the amount of distilleries in the blend. The red has fewer, and the black has quite a lot.
When you get to the last 20% of the bottle...it seems to last forever 💯🤣👑
Thanks man, nice review, i like you.
Your reviews are amazing. I have been your subscriber for fairly a long time, I've noticed the map of India is wrong and I would request you to either change it or remove the wrong map. Keep up the good work.
Hey there, thanks for the support. I'm not sure what you mean exactly but I presume it's the colour. The map is a scratch map so I scratch the colour off when I try a whisky from that country
@@NoNonsenseWhisky No sir I'm talking about the area or the territory of India. For example north eastern part of India is shown as China's part and Union Territory of Jammu and Kashmir is shown as Pakistan's part. I will attach a link to the correct map of India below please have a look. Once again thank you.
I enjoy the raisiny richness, but am struggling with the sweet licorice tang on the back of the throat, the same tang which puts me off Pukka teas which are always sweetened with licorice. Some people must like it!
I also get a really long developing unpleasant bitter aftertaste. Not very experienced with whisky, so not sure what that's from.
In my country 1l JW black cost around srd1000(my local currency) which is roughly 50~60 euro
Santokie ing mpp
Do you still have this as a go to that you always keep on the shelf? Just curious 😊 (Never tried it myself, but considering buying it just to add it my list)
That is a very good question! I actually don't have a bottle at the moment but that's because I got a good price on the 15 green label. I'd happily get another bottle when it's gone though
@@NoNonsenseWhisky The Green Label is great. Picked up a bottle in Spain this summer. It's not available here in Norway 😊 Right now I’m comparing two bottles of Ardnamurchan though 👍🏻
Ardna are doing some amazing stuff!
@@NoNonsenseWhisky Couldn't agree more 😊
Why do I tast/smell aceton at the third sip
My favourite scotch whisky can someone please tell me were I could get some litter Bottles please
The black label is great, a bit hesitant to but the blue label, is it worth it?
It is a nice dram. But worth it? I don't think so. Many think it is of course
@@NoNonsenseWhisky thanks for the reply, could you recommend any whiskeys that are like a step up from black label and still relatively affordable?
Sticking within the JW range, check out the Green Label. It won't break the bank and it a real nice dram. Probably the best value in the whole range
What size bottle is that? Everyone I can find local only has small bottles
The is a 70cl bottle
Where are you getting black label for ,20pound from
?
Here's a sign of the times! Sadly the prices have crept up since this video was release quite a few years ago. Though I can still find it for £25 when it's on a seasonal deal or similar
The red and black labels are both night and day. The black label is so much more superior.
I bought a bottle today. I find it a bit hot. Not the best 12 year old in my opinion. I will try again tomorrow
How did you find it when you came back to it?
Which color label is the best??
In my opinion, the standard black 12 is best for value. But the Green 15 is the best flavour
First whiskey I've ever had, and it was pretty recent when I had it. Its too bad!! How do you people enjoy it? I wish I could.
Try something like monkey shoulder or jameson. The black label has a bit of smoke in it which you might not have liked. There are many other whiskies that you can try if you want to start your whisky journey.
first drink always is horrible.. u have to learn how to drink it.
same as beer, the first few years it tasted so gross but now im enjoying it so much
Aye what could I use to chase this
It's what they served on the plane from London to Calgary... It will do in a pinch.
I certainly wouldn't be upset if it was the only thing available
@@NoNonsenseWhisky I think they stock it for exactly that reason... It will appeal to and not offend most scotch drinkers and it's easiest to stock and serve only one kind.
Once you go black, you'll never go back. Jonny Walker.
Ray Donovan brought me here.
Big thanks to my man Ray 🙏
@@NoNonsenseWhisky haha good review my man.
Cheers 🥃 glad you enjoyed it!
Green Label is the best. :)
I'm inclined to agree !

Google Swally Shirts and you should find the site you're after!
Twas sold out!😭
Oh no! Well keep an eye on their social media accounts as they'll likely bring it back in the future!
There is no doubt that the black is a better value than the red, but it still isn't as good as some 12 yo single malts you can get for the same or slightly more. In my state black is more than tomatin 12 and glen moray 12, for instance. One could play that comparative value game until the cows come home. I have gone through several bottles of black over the years, but in the last few it just wasn't doing it for me.
Fair one TC. Although I rarely see Tomatin around here, Glen Moray is everywhere and I am super guilty of over looking them. I shall pick up some bottles eventually!
£32 now 😢
Creeping up! Hopefully a few Xmas deals will bring it back down again
@@NoNonsenseWhisky yeah, actually I found the green label on offer at Tesco for £37 with a clubcard. Never tried it before so might give it a spin :)
I always detected caramel, pecan, on the nose.
Accept no substitute
The 10 year isn't bad, either.
How does it compare to Monkey Shoulder? Both are blended scotch
It's very different. MS is a blend of three distilleries and the Black is something 40 odd different distilleries. The black is also a little smokey whereas the MS isn't at all
@@NoNonsenseWhisky Thanks! Great review btw!
Once you go black...................
😂😂
Say mate try Jim Beam. It’s what us cheap bastards, who listen Hank Jr, drink.
🤣. I've covered a couple of JBs now. I'm not a huge fan of the white label but the Rye and that single barrel are excellent!
@@NoNonsenseWhisky white label gives me a hangover but then again I drink it straight.
Red label is horrible stuff...but my lawnmower seems to like it..
Black label is the better one.

That's definitely too much!
That's not too bad. I think it's very important to look out for the deals and pay a good price for it
What about Jack Daniels no 7???
In terms of best selling? I'm talking scotch here. JD is undeniably the largest selling single brand under the whiskey bracket
