I have used the Tobii Eye Tracker 5 for over one year so far, and I love it. I use it for almost all of my flying, but GA and warbird flying most of all. My rig is an old 2080ti and a 9900k, and it runs very well. I use it in place of VR until I can get a newer, monster rig for VR. Even then I will still use it, together with VR, as the mood takes me.

It does not work “together”, in fact you have to disable it when you’re in front of it with your VR headset. Maybe he means “when I’m not using VR”.

@@petroniobmesquita Hi, I haven’t used VR for some time, but I plan to return to it when I get my new PC next year. So, I have been using Tobii Eye Tracker 5 in place of VR, and I must say I think it is a very good substitute. In fact, in some circumstances it is better, as the video eludes to.

I call it a VR killer AND a TrackIR5 killer! I'd been using TrackIR5 for three years with the 'Track Clip Pro' and my goodness does it get in the way! I am very OCD when it comes to my desk/setup. I like to have as little in the way as possible which means by nature I prefer anything and everything to be wirelss. I feel like this is a massive upgrade from TrackIR5 as it not only feels more intuitive and natural then the TrackIR5 but also feels far more refined and precise then the TrackIR5. Oh and did I mention only one cord that's not even in the way as it stays behind my monitor and keeps my desk clutter/cable free!

I'm very impressed with how well my Tobii works, but understanding that its job essentially is to dynamically expand your field of view as needed, but still in 2D. Agree that it is nowhere close to being a substitute for VR, which truly puts you inside the cockpit.

I'm flight simming from a very remote corner of Africa, and i just got the Tobii and its been a game changer for me. I had always thought nothing would do but VR; but VR would cost me a fortune and so i went the Tobii way. Only after day one I've chucked away my TrackIR-5 and settled down with the Tobii. It simply is a blast!
My only grouse - it doesn't seem to go with IL-2 sturmovik so far. Ah well, can't have it all, can I?
Thanks by the way for an adequately effusive review of the product. It's done much to assuage me of my choice of eye tracker.

      @kokoeteantigha389 Рік тому +2

@@MCP2002 For one thing, no more fumbling clumsily around with a headset that constantly needs adjustment. Then there is the matter of the blind spot when the Led's focus gets lost. Usually, this would be during a dogfight in IL-2 and raw panic would set in and often I would be the one spinning earthwards in flames. Finally, I no longer get into the sim only to realise I didn't activate TrackIR and must first exit to do so.
My other reasons (and they are quite many) may not apply to others because my layout differs. Take for instance, I could never get the height and position for the TrackIR camera right atop my monitor. With Tobii the clamping to the base and center of the monitor has put paid to that.

WOW! I would never have thought it would work THIS well, Steve. It's a done deal for me at least. Ofc the 4090 and the Crystal can't be beat, but it WOULD be nice to enjoy the sim without wearing the headset sometimes. And with everything maxed out as well. Until this video I actually thought that you had to press a button to look left and right, and THEN you could look freely within those cams. But this is seamless all the way. GREAT video, and it had great value for me. Thanks a lot for an absolutely amazing video, Buddy. Have a great weekend an a great holiday, going to Croatia. It won't beat Norway, but hey. By the way, nice to see that you still remember all the viking battle techniques that I showed you. 1100 years ago we'd go raiding together. You know, all the English cities and places ending with -BY and - STEAD are places that the vikings overtook. BY and STAD in Norwegian means town. Much love from Norway ♥♥♥♥♥

Directly a little correction: it is not the first of it's kind device. I have since many years here a Tobii Eye Tracker 4C, the predecessor of this one and it could also do head- and eyetracking at the same time. Used it years ago for Elite Dangerous.
I also bought it as VR "Alternative" because at that time VR vs a 4K monitor was a huge difference in resolution. In Elite Dangerous for example I can find my landing pad much earlier because I can read the pad numbers easier. More resolution means a longer visibility before it got into pixel mush on the horizon.
But something is also clear, the real scale of things and today also 3D you have only with a VR headset. No flat screen can change that.

This is definitely a good alternative for those who can't use VR headsets due to low vision problems. I'm glad to know the eye tracking can be turned oof, as my eyes jitter quite a lot. I would not be able to use it a lot, as I have a very narrow field of vision, so I wouldn't be able to keep the monitor in view, when looking to the wingtips, for example. I have tried stuff like the Track IR systems, which was ok, but I still was not able to keep the monitor within my field of vision, even if I turned my head more than five degrees. LOL I can just barely use VR headsets, ad my low vision won't allow me to read the tiny silk screening of the instruments, and panels, unfortunately. But, at least, I do get to keep the view in my field of vision, whilst I move my head around. Always a trade-off, for me, and VR / head tracking systems. LOL. Hope your trip went well. Thanks for the video.

This has opened new enthusiasm for me and i have sold my headset to purchase the head tracker. Now i can enjoy full graphics and increase the realism. VR is fantastic, however i really don’t think the investment required to achieve the best results is viable at the moment. Will still watch your channel though!

Interesting concept but it is not an alternative to VR. The view on the screen changes with movement but you are still looking at a flat screen and the room around you., and as you turn your head or eyes left, right, up or down you are not looking at the monitor or TV but in your room. In VR you can look behind you and see the rear of the aircraft. VR gives a fully immersive experience of near reality, Eye/Head tracking does not.

Another excellent video and something I've been feeling guilty about since getting the motion rig and Varjo Aero but this looks perfect for when you don't want to wear the headset and headphones. A few years ago, I tried one of these and it hurt my eyes, hopefully they've fixed that, you don't seem to have any problems with it.
While I might miss the full experience with haptic, motion and VR, sometimes, especially in the PMDG 737/ Just Flight 146, I really need to focus and that's much easier at 100fps in 2d than at 30fps in VR - and 30fps is with a 5800x3d and a 4090.. As impressive as those Jets are in VR, VR just feels so much easier and more natural in the Comanche or Vision Jet.

I have had track ir5 for several years, but find it restrictive for staying put while in sim, and doesn't track as well as it should. This looks like it'll cope with seat wriggling, and high fidelity tracking, might have to give it a try. Thanks Steve.

Looking for a solution: 😅 How do you turn a knob using the mouse pointer if as soon as your eyes move, the knob moves with the screen and you end up chasing it with the mouse? It's almost impossible to keep your eyes fixed on the same screen area for the required time to turn the knob.

doesnt give you the sense of depth and space vr does, but its a hell of a lot easier to run and much more pratical for long flights. Feel liek VR still had another 5 years or so before its perfected

I jumped ship from X-Box in 2019 and purchased a mid-range PC at first, instead of the Series-X. Never looked back. One of the best decisions I've made.
My only regret is not doing it much, much sooner.
Jumping from the 'Xbox One-X' to PC blew my mind with the high quality 'Ultra' graphic settings and native 4K at unlocked frame rates.
I'm still annoyed for buying into the 4K console marketing lies when it was just dynamic resolution or upscaling and yet still barely locked to 30fps in Triple-A games.
I just read that consoles still run at 30fps in Starfield. Jump ship as soon as you can mate. I don't know of anyone that's regretted it.
I was an X-Box fanboy since the first one came out.
My Gamertag account is linked to approximately £40,000 in purchases over the decades and I just happily gave it up for PC simulations like DCS and IL-2 Great Battles with TrackiR5 and VR. I remember watching The Grim Reapers whilst I still had a console and wished I had a PC, so I could play DCS and IL-2 GB's and Submarine sims.
I'm just upgrading little by little. Saving up my pennies and getting store credit at Curry's to help with the hardware I need for simulation titles.
I know I'm making a lot of assumptions but I wasted years on consoles with that constant itch never being scratched, so to speak. Until I had a PC.
I don't want people to make the same mistake as me and waste a ton of cash on console garbage. Such a huge regret for me! I'm so disgusted with the console industry.
If only someone had told me this back in 2005. Before I bought my second X-Box version.
The only positive thing I think I can say is that I met some nice people through X-Box Live but ultimately lost them as they just upgraded to the next X-Box version.

Great video! I am currently using the reverb G2 along with the Yawll chair. In my opinion probably the closest you will get to the real thing. I admit though as you said that wearing a headset for a long period of time is a bit taxing, and I do miss the clarity of the monitor/TV. I am seriously considering this even though it won’t be compatible with the Chair. Anyone looking for a Yawll PRO?

I have both, I prefere Tobii for practical reasons, one of them to see my Saitek panels and instruments. VR is more like to be in a zoo admiring an animal for some seconds and never see it again until 30 years after.

I don't get how this could work. For example, when you physically turn your head to the left and thus are then looking 30deg to the left, it seems to me the only way this could work is to have the monitor and image move in an arc 30 deg to the left etc., etc.
Maybe your video needs to show a view a few feet behind your head.
    Am I missing something??

The reason that is not a VR killer is the price. It is the same price of a Quest 2! But still an amazin head and eye tracker!

    • @blizado3675
      @blizado3675 Рік тому

No, the reason why it is no VR killer is: no real scale feeling of objects, no 3D, no 1:1 head tracking, no blending out of the real world, no "I'm in the game" feeling, still feeling like looking through a window into a game world with wrong size scale.

@@blizado3675 but that is exactly why 300 on a VR is better than 300 on a device. The only justification to have one would be people who have nausea with VR :)
