Former neighbors and childhood friends, James and John are the Neighbor Nerds! They play new and retro games, just like they did back in the day. Today they're playing Prison City, a dystopian, action-packed side-scroller with tight mechanics and intricate level design. Battle Techno-Terrorists with your chakram and grenades, eat hot dogs for health, and locate contacts to help take down bosses. Reminds us of old NES games like Power Blade, Shatterhand, and Batman.

I kind of love that John has been there since the beginning, just very quietly behind the stage, with the photography and lending some of the games for James to review. I really enjoy him and this video was awesome.

John seems already comfortable to show his true demeanor in camera. Previously he kinda shy but here he's all out. I guess this is how James remember John during their youth.
Power Blade + Shatterhand + GI Joe + Batman + Street Fighter 2010 = This game. Its like 90's Jaleco rose from the dead dragging Sunsoft with it. I love it.

The whole game takes place in Detroit. Yep it's got to be a reference to Eminem.

Reminds of Street Fighter 2010: The Final Fight
It took me a moment to realize that this wasn’t a NES game, this is awesome.
It definitely feels and plays like a long lost NES game for sure. Glad I bought it.
Surely TMNT is the main inspiration for the game. The "U" he shoots, the ladders, bomb dismantling, heck even the music, eerily similar or direct copies.

ummm also mega man 2, ninja gayden, terminator, contra and batman. TMNT was only like one scene/part.
I am the composer for the game, and the Dam level in TMNT is one of the only tracks I directly referenced for the project, for the underwater level in this game. But rather than copying it too or referencing the sounds, I instead took their song's verse structure and wrote a song with it in my template. :)

NEIGHBOR NERDS RISE UP
This game screams "Shatter Hand" on the NES. Some of the graphics almost look like they are pulled from the title. The level select screen is similar and the blocks with the symbols are also close, not to mention the hanging from chain link ability.
Thing I love about couch co-op is what I'm seeing with that teamwork, even when you're not playing you're devising strategies. Everybody's invested. Loved this, thanks :)

As someone who lives just outside of Detroit, the fact that The Spirit of Detroit is the final boss is hilarious! (It's a statue in downtown Detroit)

I definitely agree with James, this is definitely 80's and 90's vibes to it. It has Contra and TMNT 1 elements both from the 80's.
This episode was so awesome, I can't believe they beat the whole thing!! Even on easy mode it looked SO tough, it was so satisfying when they beat that secret final boss 🎉 Nice one John and James!
