I love tale of the forst. I know it's divisive because it doesn't have that classic Glenmorangie profile, but to me it's the whisky that made me more interested in the distillery, it showed they can do things outside their usual comfort zone.
Also really enjoyed the Glen Scotia 11 Year Campbeltown Malts Festival. Super interesting. The Talisker 2023 Cask Strength special release was excellent also. Lots of sweet & savory flavors to compliment the classic Talisker peat.
My favorite limited edition this year is Laphroaig Cairdeas. They really nailed it again. It has everything I love about Laphroaig, and at a high proof. It's hard to tell if the 10 year old statement makes a palpable difference with nothing to compare it to (besides the fact that John Campbell mentioned that the base of Cairdeas is an 8 year old Laphroaig, so it's 2 extra years of aging, for whatever it's worth), but it's definitely a solid Laphroaig. I've bought 2 bottles of it, and I'll get another one to keep for future, along my other Cairdeas releases. :)
Glasgow Distillery Co have been amazing in 2024, currently working through the Small Batch Series Madeira cask finish, Islay Cask Finish on the shelf ready to go! Amazing value, hoping they'll do a batch 2 of the Manzanilla cask finish from earlier this year.
Being in NZ, we are often late to the party too. I have two of those which I bought this year, the Kilchoman Cognac and the Ardbeg BizarreBQ. Kilchoman Cognac would be my pick for Limited Editions too. The Glen Scotia was available but appears to be sold out now. The Tale of Tokyo is still available. I don't recall seeing the Lagavulin rum cask one here. There is a lot of talk about the Glasgow 1770 bottlings but they're not available here yet. Really hoping the Kilchoman Sanaig Cask Strength makes it here and I am able to pick up a bottle. Cheers!
As someone who doesn’t get along with core Laphroaig, the 2024 Cairdeas PX and Triple Wood combo was fantastic. Happy to see Bizzare B Q up there. Thought that would have to be my guilty pleasure so it’s nice to have some enthusiast backup!

Thanks Geoff, I just went through the list and felt grateful that I got to try all of these before 😃 The limited edition whisky which impressed me the most this year was the Benromach 19 Virgin Oak Matured. 19 years maturation in virgin oaks with cask strength delivery I would've thought be an overwhelming spice bomb but my my it was a delicious coconut cream cake! I haven only tried a few special editions from this year. I would pick Talisker Tidal Churn as the best of them. Just a great, full, and pretty basic Talisker. Speaking of Talisker though, I bought and tried Talisker 18 yesterday (new edition, just came here) and I was positively surprised by it. Just an amazing whisky. Very oily, intense taste (orange, blackberry) and a lot of sweetness to go with the usual sea breeze and seaweed. The finish is very very long as well. Felt like I could taste it an hour later. Incredible stuff. So happy when a whisky delivers above expectations. Oh and I will open the 2024 14-year Bunnahabhain Feis Ile on Christmas, so we will see if it can compete
The Glen Scotia limited release 2024 is my top pick of the year - unpeated fino sherry cask, 9 year old. On paper doesn’t sound as enticing as the peated white port, but for me it has the edge, and it has a gorgeous lavender blue label!
My favorite was definitely Port Charlotte SYC-01 2013. That was a berry bomb. Laphroaig cairdeas cask favourites, and Laphroaig elements 1.0 were also top tier.
After last Friday's neck pour, I find the Kilchoman 100% Islay 13th edition just superb. I was going to pull the trigger on the Cognac Cask Matured, but the universal praise of the fully ex-bourbon 13th edition 100% Islay convinced me, and I understand why. I also picked up the long-dreamed for Sanaig Cask Strength, which I'll try this weekend. (It says 2024 edition, so I wonder what changes they might have in store for next year.) Like you, some of my limited editions pre-date 2024. I really enjoyed a Douglas Laing Single Cask "Old Particular" bottling of Laphroaig 10 (53.4%). Speaking of Laphroaig, batch 15 of the cask strength 10yo was quite nice; the 16th isn't quite at the same level (needs a little water and a good amount of time and air in the glass to reach a sweet spot). Unlike you, I always dig the Kilkerran Heavily Peated stuff: I'm into Batch 8 right now. Not too dissimilar from Batch 7 but hugely different from Batch 6. Youthful, edgy, funky, sour...I'm in.
Surprisingly Jura released a great naturally presented official bottling this year with the Perspective No 1 16 year old. Well worth giving a go if anyone gets chance.

My 2024 Whisky of the Year is Balcones Cataleja. 80 to 100 year old sherry barrels and golden promise barley. Gorgeous whisky.
I have the kilchoman cognac cask matured 2023. Its my favourite kilchoman thus far. Really good stuff

I really like Daftmill winter 2011, 2024 release. And I Agree with gwhisky about Kilchoman cognac cask. A solid release.
