Braveheart being historically inaccurate doesn’t devalue it as a cinematic triumph. The movie’s a historical fantasy and not meant to depict facts; Mel Gibson and Randall Wallace have made that perfectly clear. Just sit back and enjoy the story, characters, soundtrack and cinematography. 😉

He's the man that tapped George Lucas to make Star Wars...he tapped Ridley Scott to make Alien and he told Mel it made sense for him to not only act in this movie (a given) but to direct it (not a given by any means). I honestly miss the times when movies like this could win the Best Picture Oscar. I miss the times when the main argument against most winners was ''that movie is too artsy'' and not ''that movie only won because of politics''. I miss the Oscars being about filmmaking.

Completely agree. It's not like it's supposed to be Schindler's List. It's not about the Holocaust or tragedy. It's about the oppressed country of Scotland rising up and defeating England. It's an action/adventure film with great romance and drama. It is okay for it to take it's own liberties.

Braveheart (1995) is one of the best movies of all times THAT'S A FACT (NOT EVEN MELGIBSON HATERS- that i see some of them here ,cause anong other things there very few likes!!,even so,i see others that really like& love Braveheart and MELGIBSON.
Truth is that Braveheart is one of the best films ever made, and also true that MELGIBSON should have won BEST ACTOR, BUT Hollywood Simply didn't want to give that VERY DESERVED ONE to MELGIBSON. (What some people here say is really True, MELGIBSON IS STILL UNDERRATED IN EXTREME!!,he's such a great actor!!!,but Hollywood also HATE MELGIBSON in many ways!!

I saw a documentary of 13 and watched the movie, and even some of the people who were there said 'these actors nailed it'! Whilst historians dismissed the movie Braveheart and called it a "Hollywood perversion of actual event".
The characters were not in their true form. Wallace in the movie was inaccurate along with other characters in the movie as well.

At 2:11, when "Babe" is mentioned as one of the nominees, you can see George Miller (the film's producer) in the audience, and director Chris Noonan seated in front of him. How telling that they were not seated side-by-side. They had a bitter falling-out during the production, and Noonan accused Miller of trying to take all credit for the movie's success. That's why Miller directed the sequel himself instead of Noonan.

After seeing Braveheart when it was released in Glasgow, Scotland, it inspired me to seek out books from the local library (pre-internet) and read up on my Scottish history. I learned so much. We were never really taught our Scottish history in school, save for a spider and an obscure Scottish king (Bruce) and scant few other morsels from our past.
Why weren't we taught any Scottish history in school? for fear of what's taking place today in Scotland today - an awakening. London were afraid of the consequences of Scots learning about their history, their culture, their land, their heroes. Supressing and distorting information - what they do - meant they could cow us, rule us, disrespect us and rob us. The burgeoning of information from the internet has caused a stirring in Scotland, a desire to want what every nation on the planet desires; simply to govern itself.
Let's start by Googling 'The Scottish Enlightenment' and quoting Voltaire: "It is to Scotland that we must look for our idea of civilisation." What happened to that Scotland? Nothing happened to it, except it was hidden, intentionally, expertly by the avaristic and bellligerent Westminster crew.
    No more.
We have no quarrel with our English neighbours, a popular myth put-about by those threatened by the inevitability of Scottish independence, instead, we welcome everyone, every nationality, every race and every religion.
Is it so wrong to want self-determination? Of course not, it's the most natural thing in the world.
Welcome, everyone, to our wonderful country.

People take the piss out of _Braveheart_ but it's fucking immense. Gibson deserved the nod for the battle scenes alone. As we're now in the CGI era we will never see the like again, and that's a damn shame. Reality over CGI wherever possible please!

And while I am at it I'll say this ..Mel Gibson has been one of the most underrated actors and directors Hollywood has ever had.
