Parus Art style is so HARD
Basically a talented woman's First Manga being a bit messy and not following through with all it's themes is how I describe Beastars. I will never say it was bad, trash or not good, however. It's a good manga, even with a lackluster ending.
In this case, the ending actually is lackluster and not just 'unsatisfying' for people who had certain expectations like the AoT ending.
Overall, It's an 8/10 manga.
Hoo, boy. I'm pretty much in the same boat when it comes to Beastars. The first few arcs are great, and I personally love all the stuff that happens once Legoshi gets his apartment. Then Melon shows up and slowly starts dragging things down. But even with all that. It's still legit one of the better shonen and series I've read in a while. It's one of my favorites.

Totally agreed with alot you talked about. Series started off pretty strong, then just kinda went all over the place near the Melon arc. I think Paru just wanted to end it and move back to Beast Complex (her first anthropomorphic manga series which has continued!) There were the good segments and the bad but that's what made alot of people collectively love it but despise the thrown away ending.

I liked Beastars up untill the later arcs. The plot got way to random, characters from previous arcs just disappeared, and the whole thing with Melon's father was just terrible.
I took a history of manga class the reignited my love of manga. I bought Beastars for my midterm paper, then I fell in love with it. I was Legoshi, maybe I still am in some ways. I was on light crew in high school, I was the nerd who had a close group of friends like room 701, shared similar interests yet all so different. I saw a sale for Beastars and bought 11-22 along with Beast Complex 1-3 all for $70.
I remember stumbling upon this series when I frequented the Barnes and noble near my school, and over time it ended up becoming the first manga series(aside from the ones that were like 4 volumes max) that I’d actually end up owning the complete set of. Like seriously I’d check the bookstore for new volumes pretty much every chance I’d get. Safe to say a lot of my high school cash went towards this so I’ve got a bit of a bias towards it one of my favorites
I’m prepared for season 3 of Beastars and it’s lackluster ending.

I love Beastars so much! Yeah it dips in quality by the time Melon arrives. Honestly, I’ll say the last four-five volumes is when the story takes a nosedive, but everything before that is fantastic! Easily one of my favorite stories. 10/10 great video my guy

(57:09) I suppose. But it both instances of a herbivore + carnivore offspring, the family was always broken up in some way. So it isn't so much how a mixed species lineage can turn out wrong, its illustrating the result of what happens with a family breaks apart. The child suffers.
This is an absolutely phenomenal video! A perfect mix of summary and background detail about the author, world, art ect. You hit a balance a lot of creators definitely miss on, thank you so much for making this.
I love how this story managed to tackle social issues using predator/prey dynamics without tripping over the same trap so many other stories that attempt it do. Not letting it be black and white one side is good one is bad or they are just misunderstood. The creator didn't map a single race/gender/orientation onto one class of animal because that would have made a really shit metaphor but she went way deeper and actually managed to say something profound with such a well worn trope.

13:50 there's a good explanation for this - when it comes to proportions, sometimes the human faces she draws are way waaaayyy off. For example, drawing eyes of different sizes, like one eye wider than the other when the character is facing to the front, and since they're so big it's very noticeable. Also the picture of humanized Haru and Legosi look very crooked, since human faces don't look like she drew them. It's really uncanny valley. It looks like an amateur's mistake. If the style was consistent, people would complain a lot less. But I think she's improving :)
I do like how she draws dynamic art, one of my favorite panels from Beastars is Legosi spinning to kick an enemy, don't remember which chapter, but it's so good.

I agree Beastars got worse in the final arc, but I see a lot of the issues in that arc as just being more obvious examples of issues that were already present in the story for a while. Paru is a great short storyteller who comes up with really interesting, small details, but building and maintaining a long running narrative is not her strength in my opinion. I get the feeling from both her interviews and reading her manga that she is someone who likes coming up with random ideas to throw characters into spontaneously, which plays to her strengths in Beast Complex as a manga anthology but is a lot less cohesive as part of a long running serialized manga. This becomes especially apparent during that final arc, just throwing in game shows and stands for single chapters. There are just too many moments here that are treated as serious but are just so utterly ridiculous, it often takes away from whatever messages or themes it tries to convey within that chapter, and Beastars tries to touch on a LOT of topics but only really goes into depth in a few of them. There is something quite standout about her storytelling and artstyle despite my negative opinion of the work, it's actually one of the few manga I followed while I took a break from reading most manga, but on the whole I'm not really a fan of this one.
I've read a bit of Sanda and frankly the characters were just so incredibly unlikable that I had to put the series on hold, and haven't felt any desire to go back yet. I'll get around to it in time probably but not really motivated.

Legit one of my favorite series. I really wish a lot of the cast had time to breath. Legosi got a great arc of self discovery in her "idk wtf to do with the story" arc. I feel if she did the same with Haru and Louis showing their daily lives all separate from each other and then finally getting back together that'd be so much better. But they kinda just left them collecting dust until they were relevant again
Also side tangent. I really wish they will come back and make a sort of Shippuden for Beastars. Continuing the story

There's a Japanese interview where she confirms herself to be a huge Tim Burton fangirl and adores his movies, including Ed Wood (which is probably how she named Legosi after Bela Lugosi if you've seen the movie), Edward Scissorhands, and Corpse Bride, where she states it being one of her favorites from his filmography.

I remember when I first picked up beastars and I thought I was getting into a jazzy, kind of silly zootopia-like drama because of the anime op and an illustration of it I saw once, but the moment I truly understood what the series had to offer was when Legoshi met the man selling himself on the meat market, I still remember how raw that page was and I don't think paru ever drew a scene that got to me the way it did again. I do dislike how cartoonish the meat market ended up being, since what I liked about it at first was how absolutely nightmarish it seemed compared to the rest of society, like it was where the true evil of this world went to after work and school, but I still love how raw the story got, Paru did well with it even if I wish some things were different.

(49:46) I always wondered about that. If anything, it isn't like the equipment *below the belt* was toxic. They were still able to procreate. A strong hung or a different type of kissing would have been totally fine. If she stayed alive, it would have been easier for his daughter to accept him. And if anything, when their daughter is born, the daughter is totally immune, which would have likely been some spicy jealously between the mother, so. Missed out on a lot.
Like all we wanted in the end was a polyamorous relationship between the sad wolf boi, the depressed deer and the humping rabbet. Was that too hard to ask Paru 😢

I honestly was expecting the story to get a little more twisted with a more bittersweet ending to it. Like Haru learning about the lives of mixed species children, and more specifically what a wolf/rabbit child could do to her small body, would be pressured into Legoshi and kinda believe that a real future with him can't give her the life that he or she wants. Have that commentary on those couples with differing family views. And it could've been something that was originally implanted by Melon to make him a more personal villain, but ultimately, it is something Haru takes on as her own idea. Yes, that would mean Haru and Legoshi break up, but seeing them deal with that and the reconciliation/resolution afterward would be an interesting conclusion. Also, going through this would also give time to properly work through the complications of Louis turning down Juno, which in itself is fine but needed better execution. Let Louis real mull over it as he and Juno wouldn't have the same biological hangups (theoretically) as Legoshi and Haru coupling, but a stronger effect from both familial and societal/economical sides of things. Which can ultimately lead to the "life isn't always fair" outcome, but we see how hard of that decision was; also, throwing in Louis and Juno's families not being on board with their relationship would be a nice contrast to Haru's family. Ultimately, leave both Legoshi and Louis with the feeling that the world is a messed up place, so they got a lot of work ahead of them and will be counting on the other's continued support as they're sure things will only get harder from there. Haru is still caring about Legoshi and wishes him the best even though they're not together as she looks for new focus in her life. Juno is motivated to make herself into a big shot so she can truly live the life she wants to live without others holding power over her. So it's kinda sad, but each party is motivated to move forward and not just a return norm that feels like backtracking or stagnation.
Personally, I'd hope for a small epilogue version of Beast Complex that shows people after that ending. Like Legoshi and Louis end up as a couple raising a child, probably a son, that they rescued on a mission together while also having split custody of Louis' biological daughter he had with his now ex-wife. They split on good terms, and his daughter is excited about running the business one day with the mother being very practical; contrasting his son with Legoshi who is kinda meek and intimidated by his sister though he's larger than her. Lego and Louis are taking the kids to the park for a playdate, and we see Juno arriving with her child. Juno is revealed to be the head of a rival company and has silly competitions with Louis ex-wife as both as trying to be driving forces in the industry; a competition that extends to Louis' daughter and Juno's child as the see who can outdo the other (immediate foreshadowing of the kids will likely be a pair when their older as the childhood friend and enemies to lovers trope). Then you have Haru showing up with her family of quite a few children, a rather rambunctious group. She greets them while her husband says hello, but is mainly tending to the youngest of the bunch. She's gentle with Legoshi and Louis' son who opens up a little to Haru, before 2 of her kids his age come to drag him off to play with them and another younger one is demanding Legoshi picks them up so they can beat the others to the top of the jungle gym. Legoshi does a normal wacky reaction as this happens every time and the other get mad at him for the rest of the evening. And everyone laughs at Legoshi's expense. Then, just a couple panels of people talking and laughing in the park before parting ways as the sun goes down. Nothing extravagant or super exciting, but like a silly return to the slice of life feels and seeing what is the new normal they created. Obviously, all just subjective takes, but an ending I would've liked based on how I interpreted the story. The only other silly thing I could want is somehow Juno ends up having all the Shishigumi working for her. That'd be hilarious as Louis used to be their boss, and Legoshi has scrapped with a few of them, so for them to be working under the girl that had the hots for them is funny in my mind.

this manga's art is super ugly and the story is extremely corny , the plot twists gets eye rollingly embarrassing midway through. It only got popular online because furries gush over anything with furries on it and it has a lot of fetish stuff.
