*happy sigh* Wild Arms 1... my second (but first quality) PS1 RPG. This was one of the first games I replayed on an RP2+. I couldn't believe how keen my nostalgia for this game was, and probably still is. The look of the world map, flow of characters when running (totally agree on how fun that is), the transcendent music... but, weirdly, everything for me takes a backseat to the sound of picking up an item. That sound effect was like a long, sweet hug. It's like if a sparkling star tweeted like a bird, coming quickly to rest in my palm.
Something that really surprised me was how heavily Ennio Morricone's music inspired Naruke for this soundtrack. The world map theme is basically a bouncier, more driving version of Ecstasy of Gold. I didn't know that as a kid. Apparently Naruke was/is really into spaghetti westerns, and their soundscapes directly influenced her work in this game.
It's very hard to choose a favorite song. But I imagine that the overworld theme, the game's intro theme, or Adlehyde's town theme are strong contenders. There's also a song called "A Sorrowful Separation" that always called to me as a kid. It's only a 15 or so second loop, but that song exemplifies the feeling, which I think this game introduced me to, of the determination to face one's fate, no matter the cost or challenge involved. On my replay, I was surprised as how little screen time this song receives, and the point in the narrative it accompanied didn't match up with my inflated impression of it. But I still carry it close to my heart.

I love love love Wild ARMs! Great casual game, great speedrun game, phenomenal music and 2D art. I had no clue about some of the connections between Wild ARMs and other games before, like Ziekfried and Nightmare. I'm very happy that you also included the JP version's credit song in the end of the video too, as I suspect many Western fans of the game hadn't heard it before. I would love to see retrospectives on the other WA games. Thank you for this retrospective.
My favorite tracks, even though they're basically all fantastic:
    Into the Wilderness (intro theme)
    Wh-what? (Zed's Theme)
Waterside Where Migratory Birds Gather (one of the town songs)
To the End of the Wilderness (ending song that starts when Cecilia meets back up with Jack and Rudy)
Some other secrets in the game:
If you bomb the Save Bird in Surf village, all the chickens there move towards the player, in a seeming homage to Zelda.
Relatedly, in Cecilia's bedroom in Adelhyde, there's a doll on her bookshelf that bears a striking resemblance to Link.
There's a hidden Cecilia dance after battles. It happens rarely, but after a combat Cecilia has a small chance to do a different victory pose where she dances.

      @SaintJames14 Рік тому

@@chrisdiokno5600 no idea what that is but it just got added to my list
The potential is there though. If an indie studio were to pick this concept up with modern design they'd make millions. So much untapped crossover between ronin and cowboys - they're effectively the same archetype so the game would resonate in both the east and west.
Yet no one made anything else besides Dark Cloud and maybe Azure Dreams but even then that's stretching
Idk if it's a shame or a blessing though bc look at the industry today destroying all the great IPs like FF7
      Hard to say tbh

Wild Arms 1 had a profound impact on me. My username and online handle are from it. The intro song was the first bookmarked video I had on UA-cam. I still go back and play it, I still have a working physical disc here and was literally thinking I should play it again this morning before YT recommended this video to me. I consider Wild Arms to be in my personal top 2 games of all time, fighting eternally with The Legend of Dragoon, but they are good in different ways so I don't think either will ever win. xD

Great video, watched all hour and 30 of it despite thinking "Damn that is way too long...", welp what else do I have to do on a Sunday? I first played Wild Arms when going over to a brother's friend's house as a kid and seeing it and Star Ocean 2, both of which had a huge impact on me. When he eventually let us borrow the game, I played it through completely and loved every second of it. Being from the south west of the US I've always had a fascination with the wild west and love just about everything about it; it is somehow nostalgic and familiar. My only gripes with the game now are that the battles feel like they can drag due to how long some of the animations are and how slowly they can play out due to the dramatic camera angles; this is alleviated with fast forward in an emulator thankfully. Having played through 2 and 3 in the series I can also say that I don't really like the aesthetic of the character sprites and models in game and in cutscenes, especially in comparison to those two. That being said: I know it was an early PS1 game and is a product of it's time so I cannot give it much guff (I'll save that for how they look in Alter code f). If this game ever comes up as a topic in conversation I always bring up hat it is fine as a RPG, but is absolutely incredible as a soundtrack, which is something I say about Chrono Cross as well. I can listen to the ost any time of the day and just enjoy every second of it; it's just that damn good! The aforementioned friend had the strategy guide for the game and I ended up with it in my possession for a ridiculously long time, so much so that the whole thing fell apart at one point and all I saved was the awesome centerfold picture of the Jack, Rudy, and Cecilia fighting Berserk which adorned my wall for quite some time (albeit quite raggedy and taped in the middle lol).
Hope you get around to doing retrospectives on the rest of the games. I'd definitely love to see a Wild Arms 3 one.

I think you surpassed yourselves with this one! You put so much passion and this retrospective really made feel like going back to my old Wild Arms save and wander around its magical world. I really appreciate your work and I also love that videos are getting longer! I have a question for you: did you have the chance of meeting Doomsday during your playthroughs? It's supposed to be a very rare random encounter and I remember bumping into it in Malduke. That thing was so tough I was shocked it wasn't a boss but just a regular monster lol. I also found very few information about this enemy online so I guess that most players didn't even meet it once because of its very low encouter rate

Just came across this video, and sadly with how late it is, I need to get to bed. Also because I am tired. I will watch this later. I played Wild Arms as a kid, it was a hand down that I got from a friend of my dads, along with other games (FFVII among them) and my first PS1. As much as I loved FFVII, I got so stupidly confused about it telling me to insert the 2nd disc. I had all the discs, but I was stupid. So I moved onto playing Wild Arms. I enjoyed the art and feel of the game a lot. And I wish I could remember the story. But I did play each characters intros like 20 times before I figured out that I needed to pick them up with another character. Mind you, me stupid. But I had a lot of fun replaying those same sections. Until I finally learned to progress. Still don't fully understand the unlock/learn magic system as well as I should.

The wild arms OVA-tier anime intro is up there with Alundra as the best on the PS1. Like Alundra, I was disappointed when I finally played the games and realised they were JUST intros. Somehow I'd got it into my head that these games would have anime cutscenes in the same way that Final Fantasy had FMV cutscenes. Hell, Alundra's intro shows scenes from throughout the game. Maybe I was naive, but I thought they were clips taken from full animated scenes from later in the game. How cool would that have been...

This game baffled me when I figured out one day that it contains clues to every one of its secrets. If you actually read all the books and stuff, you might not need a guide, well, except that one treasure chest and story puzzle at one point, I could not solve that one. But in general I loved this one more than FF 7. I felt the characters had more personality growth than most FF games.

I know you rip on the 3D graphics, but I actually really like them. They are very similar to Shining Force 3 and other early 3D games. I love how basic they are, yet they still have that "chibi" vibe.
