Her art in Dai Dark really shows those dark colors and amps up the dark aspect, but i just cant take my eyes off of it. So glad my favorite creator is covering the mangas i love!
The thing I love about Dorohedoro is that there’s not really any bad guys, even the devils are likeable. I feel like the key of the series is the balance between shonen/action and straight up slice of life, it’s both intense and cozy at the same time. Never mind the fact that the art is so far beyond the majority of mangaka, it’s Katsuhiro Otomo level
...I mean, you can argue that, but it's right at the end where any clear, actual bad guys appear. Before that it's mostly people who have been fucked up in the worst ways possible throughout their life and decide to perpetuate it to others for one reason or another.
I completely get what you mean and agree, while completely disagreeing, on semantics: the crime syndicate are _very_ much bad guys, which is why, even as you kind of grow to love them, you dread them meeting with the other protagonists and the damage that will unfold. They are stylish, they are charismatic, but whether it's against other villains, or "good guys", their action aren't really excusable, in direct contrast to the more heroic protagonists' dubious actions.
This is literally what a dark fantasy should be. I loved how she made every group likable. You knew why each person was in the group, and why everyone liked each other. She found a way to make me not want anyone in any group to die lol I read this back in 2018 and was one of the few manga I sat and read from start to finish over 3-4 days.
Same! Read it all in three days. Absolutely loved it all. I have very very very minor criticisms but otherwise nothing but praise for it. Its top 3 of my favorite manga. It’s actually two on my list.
One clarification, Nikaido wasn't doing the devil ritual, she swore off magic because of how dangerous it is and it fulfilled the ritual's requirement of not using magic for a year for the morphing process.
The only correction I want to make is that the En Family always all cared for eachother despite their unlawful nature, even their henchmen cried when En died and when the others were presumably dead, that's what I love about them
When i first read it i though it was so damn new metal and reminded me of slipknot, then i heard that the mangaka was a fan and literally was slipknot fanfiction and it made so much sense
I love how terrifying and stupid the devils are at the same time. The strange dynamic Haru and Kasukabe have is fun in addition, I enjoyed the running joke about Haru's interest in singing, which eventually leads her to recording an album. I loved that, later on, you see the professor wearing a shirt with the name of the album on it. That little detail got a good chuckle out of me. Kasukabe aging in reverse with no acknowledgement until a decent time later was great also.

Hells yeah! (Lol literally 😈) ...I just discovered this anime a couple weeks ago and now I'm 50 chapters in the manga. You seem to get it: my family is going through a tough time right now - we lost our jobs and it seems that the world is stomping on us...But it's NOTHING compared to the shit these characters are going through, and I absolutely love how they are almost all infectiously happy in spite of/because of their circumstances...it's like just because everything is going to, well, "hell" thats even more the reason to find joy where and however we can! I love this series, thanks for sharing!
Yes! I ended up rewatching dorohedoro last year and loved it! It's always awesome when you have some so creative to make crazy wacky unique worlds like this one. And the relationships are so interesting and wholesome while society being so gruesome but goofy at times. I can't wait for season 2!
Those who dont listen to much electronic music wouldnt recognize it, but the anime incorporates not only rock/metal music, but also jungle. The song blaka smoko (the full version not being used in the show itself) Additionally, one of the songs not included in the show itself but a part of the soundtrack is a song by ambient artist shackleton which is a really deep cut. I suggest checking them out as well as more jungle like shitmat and foul play
Legit one of the most fun worlds ever written Anime is full with insane power levels but it's really unique to basically have all those overpowered characters just kinda be some dudes at the sides. Like the devils are the most powerful beings in the universe but the danger is really real by pissing them of with basic shit like fucking with one of their statues like they dont have better things to do. En is this larger than life mob boss but you still see him kinda just hanging out with his underlings that fear him, but also casually hang out with him too sometimes, also the fact that he shows a movie about himself to all of his employees. Just really love how they managed to make the most overpowered characters goofy idiots while it's never going into unfunny anime territory, it's actually endering and somehow feels realistic. Casually throwing in stuff like reanimation and time travel magic it really felt like a setting where everything was possible and somehow it still actualy works

I read through Dorohedoro about 2 years ago, and loved it! Then watched the anime when it came out with my wife who likes anime, but can't be bothered to read manga For her sake really hoping the anime gets completed, because it was actually really good (in my opinion at least)
I’ve always felt that Dorohedoro’s world is strongest in the urban sprawl environments of the Hole and the Sorcerers realm. The dirt and grime of the environments have given me vibes of Kowloon in how dense and almost otherworldly it is because of the density. Nihei, Hayashida, Mayuzuki, Kishiro, Fujimoto, and even Hiroe all have that ability to make worlds that seem so familiar and yet completely alien through small details and insane plots.
Glad you covered this! There's so much to love about this series between the powers, characters and overall aesthetics. It's also one of the very few stories where there's no one group I'm solely rooting for since nobody is objectively good or evil. One of the only other series I've felt that way about the cast is Golden Kamuy.
Even though I finished reading this series around January 2021 all of the characters, insane plot points, and traumatic full page body horror illustrations have stuck with me. I love it 😤💕
Honestly finished binge reading it today, started it yesterday. Chapter 41 was where I went to since I watched the 2020 anime. Man it was a blast just reading and seeing the insane visuals of the manga.
This is the kind of series where when the big bad evil mob boss who turns people into mushrooms gets revived, it's a huge "Fuck yeah! The cavalry's here!!!" moment. Edit: the other most emblematic moment is when you realise Chidaruma is basically the god of this world, everything makes sense after that.
God I love DHD, one of my favs, but one thing really threw it off for me and gives me a weird feeling every time I think about the setting; the fact that everyone is canonically doomed to be tortured for eternity in hell and there's nothing anybody can do about it. At least the devils are fun.

Oh hell yea. I finished Dorohedoro a few months back, but honestly most of the story and characters didn't click with me. I always felt like i didn't get it or i was missing something in terms of themes and ideas. I hope this video gives more insight on what I missed.
I'm not sure if i agree that there's zero romance between Noi and Shin. I always felt like there was a bit of unrequited love coming from the Noi side. It certainly not overt but I felt that if Shin wanted there to be a relationship, it could happen. Probably just be what I want to happen lol!

I absolutely love the manga and the anime is such a great watch as well! However, one thing that I noticed is that the anime does Risu kinda dirty? I feel like they didn't quite nail his character which is quite unfortunate cause he's my favourite :')
I personally am not a fan of her artstyle. That DOES NOT mean I don't understand nor appreciate her art I do but I just don't like the way characters look. You can dislike something and that doesn't have to mean you have no understanding of said thing.

I recommend golden kamuy. A group race to find lost gold. All characters are gray, and fucking crazy. Its a fun read
