Imo automation is the fun part where you get to make magic happen as a mixer. Its my favorite part of the process these days
Same. And if anyone reading this finds it dull and tedious, try setting your DAW's faders to react to the volume automation in real time, so you can watch the faders move on their own in accordance with the automation you drew. So cool
Tip no3. 👍 Volume automation changed my life! I use way more the 0.5dB though.
One example I love to bring up is ’Holy diver’ which everyone think is a guitardriven song. In fact, during the verse, there is only vocals, bass guitar and drums, the guitars are veeery low mixed.
These techniques get your mix 98% of the way. Great stuff!

This video was awesome! That's the story of my life. I spent decades worried about the newest plugins and gear, skipping simple and effective techniques. I think almost all mixing engineers have been through this in the past.

I do use these techniques now thanks to you! Especially the automation. When you first start mixing, automation is a hard concept to grasp. You have to get the basics of the mix down first (EQ & compression), but once you understand that, then automation is the next step & it really makes a difference. Like night & day when you listen back to your mixes. Thanks Bobby for all your informative vids! 🤘🏻

I did this on my kick just last night. It was too thin and high so I used a shelf to make it more bassy and it filled out nicely
I pretty much start with volume automation as it solves most problems by itself. Either that or it points out more clearly what else I need to do.
LCR is hte first thing I learned about mixing. I can understand mixing without panning.
Hey Bobby here's an idea for a video if you find it interesting... Try to polish a poorly recorded tracks. You know, we have all been there... A local metal band trying to play beyond their ability. Timing issues, srting noise, drummer rushing through fills and messing up double bass parts... and of course the sound captured is less than ideal. It can never sound nice and clean, but let's see how far can we get in these conditions 😅

When Ot comes to saturation, using „Heat“ is a good start, when you‘re in pro tools.
I've gotten much better with all of this and it's made a big difference!!

In my current music project, my bassist does a lot of cool little runs while following along to the guitars, and in order to make those little gems stand out, I use volume automation. It's a wonderful and powerful tool, but the actual act of doing it (to me) is a little tedious, lol.
I got a video suggestion . Im listen to my mix. I've dibe the balance and say the low cuts. I'm listen and the kick sounds boomie. Im thinking it needs more attack . What would be the technic needs to do this? Or the opposite ,has attach but needs more boom.
Tips like that. Like top 5 ways to make you kick this or that. Bass has lis od bottom 5 ways pros give it more high end.

Also for vocal volume automation a decent vocal rider will work fine.
It's still not as good as doing it by hand and using your own creativity.

Yet still as he said, even if it saves time, its NOT as good as getting it by hand. If you want a lazier approach, expect lazier or more robotic results. Sure we have a computer to do everything, but why not develope your own way by hand rather than relying on something outside your control? That makes lazy cookie cutter music, imo. His point stands, manual touch beats all, all thats required is experience. This page is for those of us looking to use that experience. We dont care about fancy plug ins. We care about getting the job done right and good, consistently. At the end of the day, here i am, years later still on frightboxes channel with immensley better music than when i started. And whom are you?

Pedantic I know… but using the word amateur to describe novice/beginner always slightly bugs me. It just means they don’t do it for a living.
I know lots of expert amateurs and a few hopeless professionals in various different fields, including audio production.
I shelf everything, always. I don't like super highs and I can't hear super lows. Easy.
Automation is such an important part of a mix. We do it naturally when playing live in regards to changing volume, intensity etc. Levels are 80% of everything for sure. Reference tracks are invaluable as a guitar player trying not to create a "guitar player's mix", it's still a struggle.
