😂 I know right well said. I get frustrated with these doctors telling us parents with autistic children that this is how we are supposed to do things why because they read it in a book give me a break. 🤹
As a teacher first doctors and teachers not allowed to record their patients or their students and second there are no ways but these things to deal with kids having autism and i just saw this video and i really doing as she said now and it works sometimes and sometimes you have just to leave the kid and walk away to show him that when he talk loads he will be alone and you will not have a communication with him so he will feel more save and more calm
As a teacher I can attest that it really does depend on the child (which is mentioned here). The best way to handle it is to try and prevent it. Know the warning signs with your child (body language, stims etc). You won't always catch the sign and you may not always be able to prevent but knowing when to intervene before it gets full blown is helpful. During, as she said you use whatever strategy works best. The best advice any professional can give (based on experience) is know your kid: sensitivities, calming methods etc . It's not easy but not impossible either
calling it a "tantrum" is not quite right. i am lucky that i am verbal. imagine being non-verbal, and not being able to say "help me, the lights in this shop are so bright they feel like my eyes are burning/ the itching of the seam in my sock is driving me crazy/ the smell of that floor cleaner is overwhelming, etc" and the screaming that happens is not a tantrum , it us a response to the stimuli or upsetting thing that is freaking the person with asd out. sometimes if i have a bad meltdown (though mine are more like freeze-ups, i go inside of myself, frozen, mute, was s.m/ selective mutism for a year or two as a young kid.) i can't speak. maybe a word or two,a sentence, if am lucky. people see that as being rude ,i'm sure. it's not. i like politeness, kindness, overall just plain decency like. 'scuse the long comment , just wanted to point that out, how it is not the same, at all, as a tantrum. thatsa behavioural response to not getting one's own way. a meltdown is very different.

I have Autism, and this IS the right way to deal with it, not a tantrum, but a 'Meltdown", our senses/ informational load have gone overboard, and we don't know how we are feeling, how to express it to others, or even how we "calm ourselves". we are Learners too, we BOTH need to find ourselves in the journey, work out what calms us, how to avoid triggers, what they are, early recognition of these, stress, extra calm time in routines, for expected stressful events to cope better with it ( know it is coming, and calm well before the storm). we are NOT BAD children, just a brain that has overloaded, and doesn't know what to do :-)

@@pizzabagelzmanning7277 a few things that helped me are: music (tapping your hands and feet ARE Neurotypical behaviours :-) ); chocolate, esp the dark or White kind, peppermint tea, or peppermint icecream; hobbies (any fidget toy, book relating to interests), at home, esp. at night after a long day having some "isolation" time, to cool off; if you are invited to a party\ event which is expected to be crowded, having 1-2 hours of "hobby time" to slow right down to keep any anxiety to minimum (may still feel it, but not at meltdown\shutdown levels); if going to important appointments, have a trial run with a family member, or support worker, this puts the Anxiety in the meeting itself, not that + getting there on time!; if you have anything you like the touch, smell of, then bring it with you (have a standard "kit" bag, you take with you to events, with basics, not just keys, wallet, purse, but to have these sensory things with you to); keep a diary, or callender, and plan 1-2 weeks ahead, esp. if a lot of stuff is going on, this allows you to factor in breaks, or hobby time to keep anxiety in check.
@JulieHalo great to hear, but this is Management of the stress, NOT a 'cure' for the Autism itself!!, what the herbs are likely doing is acting on the gut or brain chemicals ( I am no scientist, doctor, etc, just a pwld), like the chocolate, I described in the posts above, it allows distraction( on the good taste, texture, or the 'dopamine' hit, this positive stimulus gives you), and gives you (the asd person) control of your response to this stress, by "controlling the stimulus"( the herbs, in this case) and making it positive, that your brain WANTS, not what it hates!, and by controlling this, the brain is dealing with less input, so can redirect this power to more constructive activities.
What really needs to happen is for parents AND teachers to be on the same page, by teaching self regulation skills. It's called "conscious discipline." You see your child is having a hard time. You get down to their level and "listen to them" (if they're capable of talking, and "study their body behavior." Tell them what their facial expressions look like ("I see your face is frowning and your eye brows are lowered. You must be having a really hard time. Let's show that we can be STARs (Stop, Take a deep breath, And Relax). Do you remember how we can be STAR's? Let's do it together. We are calming our bodies. Breathe in.... Breathe out. You are a STAR. You are Important. You are SAFE.") Repeat the breathing exercises until they are no longer needed. If they like hugs, ask them if they need one. Do not tell them how they are feeling because you may misinterpret their face. When they've calmed down, do not punish them. They have already had their consequence. The true consequence is the emotional feeling they've already felt. In their mind, they're probably thinking, "I shouldn't have drawn on the wall, but I did it anyway. Now I have to clean it up." Follow through with the clean up process, once the child has calmed their body. This technique should be used with parents of all sorts of children because self-regulation, just isn't taught or practiced at typical preschools and public schools. When children learn to sooth themselves and can say, "I feel mad, but I know I can handle this," you've created a confident child, AND a happy home.
Riley Bentley that maybe work when there younger but when they grow up you talk to them like that they'll think you're calling them a baby if they see you talk to then differently they'll get mad (but clearly they all react differently not all of them get mad or yell at small things).

“Tantrum” is not the right wording “Sensory overload leading to a meltdown” or just “a meltdown” is better wording It’s great! But as an autistic person, don’t call it a tantrum
My 5 yr old had a tantrum / meltdown because she wanted to hop on the bus after dark in the cold and go to mall ( closed) I couldn’t talk her through it she was t hearing me but was crying screaming “please mommy continuously... I stayed quiet close to her but she gets more worked up saying I’m ignoring her ? She wants a response yet isn’t happy with the answer which was no we can’t go right now it’s dark cold and late .... what do you do ? I was very overwhelmed so I gave in because she’s autistic she just wouldn’t understand why we couldn’t go

Redirect- distraction. Ask what they want. Remain calm. Encourage an activity that calms. Music, books, bubbles. Ask them if they nedd a hug, a touch. Let them know it's ok to be mad- sad. Use words. Take a break. Alone or with you. Reward desired behavior! ABA in every day language.

If we don't ignore my son when he has a breakdown he will continue on his path of rejecting everything and everybody to no end. The only thing that worked for us was to leave him be to calm down from the situation. I would have a certain toy he likes waiting for him to discover and he would play with that until he fully calmed down, then he would approach us and we could discuss his feelings. This is the only method that ever worked for us.

I know this video is old but I'm going to put my two cents in As someone who lives with kids with autism there is a complete difference between memorizing some textbook passages about autism tantrums or "meltdowns" whatever Than actually dealing with the child going through the act . Anybody with a doctorate or degree can memorize a bunch of words , passages and pages but until you're actually with that child Hands-On seeing and dealing with it you will never understand. No amount of test books articles can ever prepare you for the real thing. If anybody really wants to learn tips or tricks on how to handle a child with autism who's having a upset moment find a channel dedicated to autism like real family channels with autistic children and how they handle it.

Tantrums and sensory meltdowns are not the same thing. A tanturm is caused by a child wamting something and they can ve stoped or contorlled by the child or paremt at any tome however meltdowns can not and oftem leed to blackout (spaces of time where the child is unable to contoll thier actions and after are unabel to recall thier actions) this of coures form personal experiance
Please do not let's get hung up on terminology - the child is extremely upset and is unable to communicate with the spectrum of actions that is available to non-affected children - importantly, including speech and even shouting. They can hurt themselves or others; damage property, etc. Two things needs to happen - one is that the explosive behaviour needs to be contained and calmed (effectively, and by a person or persons who is/are calm) -- and the second thing is that the child needs, to the best extent possible, involving patience and time, to be taught that the behaviour is not alright. However, before these two things, distressed-based extreme behaviour in a child with autism might well be predictable and there are almost always signs - and ways to avoid trauma and distress for the child, and ultimately for others. Thank you (from Australia).
@@chelsealaverick6300 They don't often lead to blackout. That's actually not super common. It's usually the case that a meltdown is just extremely distressing and causes burnout, but most people can remember their thoughts and actions.
This is so offensive. When a child with autism acts up like this, it is not a tantrum. They are not trying to get their own way like a child with a tantrum would. They are frustrated at being unable to communicate what they're feeling. It's more accurate to call it a sensory meltdown.

Even using the term tantrum with autism is somewhat awkward. Not that autistic children can't have tantrums, but tantrums aren't the problem. They're really easy to deal with compared to meltdowns. what if you have "tantrums" as an adult? i wish that there were more examples and resources for adults on the spectrum, especially for females of all ages.
I like that you put tantrums in quotes. They're meltdowns and adults on the spectrum have them. Meltdown and overload just is. You can go on Facebook and find many wonderful groups for adults on the spectrum :)
Richard Sequeira a Tantrum and a meltdown is two different things imho. As I see it a tantrum is due to something not going like a person wants it to go, and a more or less concious reaction to try and change that, somewhat of a try to control by manipulation. Whereas a meltdown is due to some sensory overload, that the person cannot control and was not prepared for, or a build up of many things, that simply is filling up the cup, till it cannot hold anymore, and it has to spill over. Most people probably have meltdowns sometimes, but it’s more likely that people with asd’s cup simply fill up easier, and they don’t have the ability to see it comming and retreat to a place of privacy, like most people prefer.

Joey next time take away minutes from an activity he likes for example playing on a i-pad. When he is acting aggressive or not okay say, "if you continue this behavior you lose 1 minute of playing on the I-pad" Walk away but stay where you can see and hear him. If he continues say okay daddy has to take away one minutes of you getting the I-pad. Make a visual so he can see it and they may help as well since most autistic children are visual learners.

I love them both so so much, but I can't help but feel kinda guilty for how it's effected my older son's life. It's not easy being a single mother of an ASD child, but it's even harder for an older sibling to handle it at times. My ex husband couldn't handle any of it and abandoned us all recently. I would never give up on my child, but it's definitely not an easy life by any means for any of us.
how i started to deal with my 4 year old autistic kid in public was to take him out every day, rather it was a local park, a mall or a zoo... i had always taken him to an open environment with lots of people so that he can learn to interact with people correctly..
Why are they having the meltdown…? Something changed? Being Oppositional? Redirecting them.. some held .. some need to be given their own time (rather than ignored) A cry for help.. to be safe or what is bothering them.. sensory emotional overload Discomfort or frustration.. give them something to do..

my wee nephew has autism he threw 2 tantrums he hit my sister my dad and he was going mad he was wanting to get out the car, from what my young 6 year old niece said (his twin sister) said he bit her when he got mad and just threw a tantrum and he climbed over the seat and tried to get out the door. The 2nd one We didn't go on the motorway so he threw a tantrum saying "mum, i'm taking off my seat-belt" and then my sis said go on but you will get me thrown in jail. I told her to pull over because i felt sick. My very young niece aged 4 was at the front window while my sister was in the middle controlling my nephew and he bit her arm and my 4 r old niece was just crying at the window it was rolled down so dad carried her out she was cuddling his legs ;( we where both crying it was so scary, at one point my dad had to hold him when he was trying to get out the car and my sis pulled him down back into the car and rolled up the window enough so he can't get out and hurt himself he sat in the front seat and that makes him calm down. When he calms down my sis will usually try to make him laugh and make him happy and when we get back he runs to his room it's like his house my 6 yr old niece told me. I don't mind it all and I know he doesn't mean it and it's not his fault at all.
I have learned to just say "My emotional state is extremely hectic, I have alexithymia and cannot pinpoint exactly what I feel but I believe it is either frustration or rage, but is definitely on the "fear" end of the "love/fear" continuum. Dude how do we deal with someone like my brother when he has a Meltdown he just Throws rips and Hurts everyone around him he would go so far as literally making us Cry and when he acts like that my Dad Beats him up as Discipline but we make sure to give him everything he likes, like Toys and Blocks but he still does a Meltdown like we try to Bring him outside he doesn't want to and I think he has severe autism I think because like he can no longer talk he just Scream random words Happily when he's happy and he's 17
And he Doesn't even want to eat sometimes without my Mom Because I think he has no trust at my dad for beating him up to defend us and he would not eat until my Mom is There and like my mom is the only person he can trust like he doesn't trust His siblings anymore even tho we don't hurt him or try to Force him we give everything he likes but not everything

How to sensibly buy LEGAL cbd oil that can help manage autism symptoms? Because I got a letter saying customs has confiscated my package two times already and I’m pissed.
Been there done that. The only place where I was able to purchase cbd legally was this verified place here bit.ly/2AqEi2r Fast shipping, great quality.
No help at all, could of read this on a google search and limit setting…. You do that with a 2 - 3 year old with high functioning that doesn’t understand why or why not he can’t get something or do something.
Need Application that removes harmful contents on autism. I don't like UA-cam. I need FTC and COPPA kick in the system. What happened? Ads screwing kid's minds.
OMG I just saw the doctor on this video for my son's consult all she does is to yawn in front of me like really she should take a nap or something! lol
i like nice smells aswell I scream when I feel people are depriving me off something just because they thing im disabled is it always a trantrum is that fair even when the autism person or aspie person like me feels there being tormented
This advice is not for children on the spectrum. Who is this person? Howcast needs to re-do this video with someone who specializes in ABA therapy or a child neurologist who specializes in autism.
ABA is just 'dog-training'. It is an important component part of the whole way in which children with autism are helped. However, it should be known for exactly what it is. It is not 'therapy' - it does not cure anything. Also, it has been subject to considerable questioning and criticism.
tytyiska13 a tantrum is when your kid wants something a meldown is when your kid gets overwhelmed and becomes unstable a kid can control a tantrum he just cant control a meltdown
Janine Mudaliar It can help to facilitate interaction and build usefull neural pathways to enable the sufferer to extend their abilities. A lot can be done with ABA.
Janine Mudaliar you know there is no cure for autism, right? However, behavior analysis is the most empirically backed method to treat autism. And do you realize that you learn the same way that dogs learn? Fun fact.
I have tried watching this a couple times but can’t get through because you are calling it a tantrum. This video is just not helpful, “see what works and do that”??? okay thanks🤦🏻♀️
Easy said than done. Show a video of a child being helped by you and walk us through.
Exactly
When i go see my nephew if mom allows i might put up videos. He finally said 2 clear words today. " you tube" I'm so happy for him.
It's not easy but not impossible either
calling it a "tantrum" is not quite right.
i am lucky that i am verbal.
imagine being non-verbal, and not being able to say "help me, the lights in this shop are so bright they feel like my eyes are burning/ the itching of the seam in my sock is driving me crazy/ the smell of that floor cleaner is overwhelming, etc"
and the screaming that happens is not a tantrum , it us a response to the stimuli or upsetting thing that is freaking the person with asd out.
sometimes if i have a bad meltdown (though mine are more like freeze-ups, i go inside of myself, frozen, mute, was s.m/ selective mutism for a year or two as a young kid.) i can't speak. maybe a word or two,a sentence, if am lucky. people see that as being rude ,i'm sure.
it's not. i like politeness, kindness, overall just plain decency like.
'scuse the long comment , just wanted to point that out, how it is not the same, at all, as a tantrum.
thatsa behavioural response to not getting one's own way.
a meltdown is very different.
I agree I'd rather use meltdown.
They need to use more items that'll help in communication.
the trick is to know how to differentiate between tantrums and crises because parents often end up confused with each other
I hate you

I'm glad you commented correcting the term "tantrum." I wanted to do the same.
Thank you so much for this x
Riley Bentley that maybe work when there younger but when they grow up you talk to them like that they'll think you're calling them a baby if they see you talk to then differently they'll get mad (but clearly they all react differently not all of them get mad or yell at small things).
I agree teachers and parents should be on the same page.

“Sensory overload leading to a meltdown” or just “a meltdown” is better wording

Yup.. i could kinda relate to this🥲🥲
Redirect- distraction.
Ask what they want.
Remain calm. Encourage an activity that calms. Music, books, bubbles. Ask them if they nedd a hug, a touch.
Let them know it's ok to be mad- sad. Use words. Take a break. Alone or with you.
Reward desired behavior!
ABA in every day language.
1. Bring out the belt
2. Let them notice it
3. If tantrum consists strike with the belt

When an autistic kid is in sensory overload IGNORING THEM IS THE ABSOLUTE WORST THING TO DO instead give them stim toys (blocks, playdogh etc)

As someone who lives with kids with autism there is a complete difference between memorizing some textbook passages about autism tantrums or "meltdowns" whatever
Than actually dealing with the child going through the act .
Anybody with a doctorate or degree can memorize a bunch of words , passages and pages but until you're actually with that child Hands-On seeing and dealing with it you will never understand.
No amount of test books articles can ever prepare you for the real thing.

i think it's called a meltdown, not a tantrum
Mel Richardson no it's both
Tantrums and sensory meltdowns are not the same thing.

EXACTLY! I thought that before even seeing the video.
Even using the term tantrum with autism is somewhat awkward. Not that autistic children can't have tantrums, but tantrums aren't the problem. They're really easy to deal with compared to meltdowns. It's like the entire video is just obviously not made by someone who has been around autism much. It's pretty annoying.

The first step is realizing it’s not a “tantrum”. It’s an autistic meltdown and there is a significant difference between the two.
Not really. Just a different word essentially meaning the same thing. One just has the context of having autism as the cause. It’s just semantics.
what if you have "tantrums" as an adult? i wish that there were more examples and resources for adults on the spectrum, especially for females of all ages.
I like that you put tantrums in quotes. They're meltdowns and adults on the spectrum have them. Meltdown and overload just is. You can go on Facebook and find many wonderful groups for adults on the spectrum :)
Tantrums are tantrums. It's like disagreeing with the colour red when everyone else is saying it's red.
Why especially for females ?
@@richardsequeirateixeira calling an autistic meltdown a behavioral tantrum is like calling the color blue as the color 7.

Maybe it's not a tantrum. Ever think of that? I love that she is explaining that it might not be bad behavior or defiance. But this is why we have to use the correct terms, tantrum vs neurological meltdown.
She literally put quotation marks on the word Tantrum
@@ThaliaEatsDonuts Yes. She did. But because people still often think it's a behavioral issue, it's really important that the definitions of the words are made clear.

I have aspergers syndrome and my son is 3 showing signs of some kind of autism, he hurts other's and every day is a challenge.
@Sean Gloria Ty we have tried chamomile tea before bed, it actually makes him hyper instead of calm. We do give him melatonin before bed so that he can get a good night's rest.

"Getting down to why the child has autism." Ooosh, she slipped there. She knows it's your fault for drinking while pregnant! :O
Autism isn't caused by drinking during pregnancy..
Okay sometimes most likely, caused by
Drinking
Smoking
Any drugs in general while pregnant leads to higher risk of autism in your child, but even if you don’t you could still have an autistic child, but if you do drugs it’s more likely to happen :^

My boy tells me to go away. Obviously I am not going to go away and leave him there in the front yard.
If you son is on the swing set or in a safe area going away could mean let him have some space. Sitting on the porch or a chair where you can see him is a better solution. He may not like you hovering over him.

My son is 6 year old, has autism and right after school when we pick him up, he would run towards train station which is close by, he has great liking for trains, earlier we used to take him to train station within the city was ok, but now he would like to take train to the airport and would like to fly, if we dont do and tell him no, he would have ''tantrums'' he would go to extent of pulling our hair, sometime we have to lure him by telling him that we would give him candy or mobile phone to play with etc. but this has started causing problem now. Does anyone have any suggestions? my son has very limited verbal skills, we have several time used cards, but he would not look at them, would throw them in the air.
My son is this with transitioning 😡 he flies off easily when transitioning and starts targeting others immediately
Yeah my son still does. He's 17. We've had to learn to set a timer and give advance notice every time. "Hey son, we're leaving to go get groceries in 30 mins." Meltdown prevented.
My son does tbat at times. When at home we send him to his room to cool off there than allow him out. Rocking and holding on a tantrum no. Lady you or a idot

Give the person a really heavy object to throw, punch, bend or smash (into pieces, for best physical relief). That or distract him/her, kind of like Inception you plant another thought. It's the same action and chaos in the brain in both cases 😏 And equally difficult to change it.
EyesOfByes I have meltdowns and yeah that really helps, I throw stuff and I rip stuff apart, I once ripped my favorite drawing (at the time, it’s really bad to me now lol) and I was so sad after, I also ruined something else I made out of toilet paper tubes. It’s kind of like I’m not myself.. like something chaotic takes over me in a blink of an eye and I can see what’s going on and I feel the anger and I know I’ll regret the stuff I do but I do it anyway, I have no self control and I fear hurting people. I’ve hit my sister but not to hard thankfully. I’ve ruined stuff I’ve really like and messed up my bed and cried and screamed in to pillows, sorry for ranting here-

Fun fact.
EXACTLY!

No, that would make the meltdown worse and trigger a panic attack making the child be timid and nonverbal.
