A study was conducted for this. I believe it was by UNISA but stand to be corrected. They found that proportionally, Africans and coloureds have similar achievements for Undergraduate, honours and masters degrees. But When it comes to PHD Level, coloured students just don't register.
ANC gave the coloureds a raw deal all round . We were only good enough to fight the struggle , but they claimed all the spoils .
Its true, i studies at UCT in the early 2000's, you could count the coloureds on one hand. The blacks came from Everywhere and they got a bursary residence and a place. UWC the same, gf studied there early 2000, many coloureds since its central for many, today we are a minority in our own backyard
UCT rather gave other african country applicants space to study over our coloured kids & that was a personal experience fact!!

If I may say this, I'm not sure what competence means and how voters determine this. Look globally. It's mostly about spin! Agreed. And as the ladies here, and the gentleman specified time and time again, their specific political parties embrace the ideal of multi-racialism. The bare-boned facts are that SA is a very diverse country with a highly heterogeneous population. That's a truckload of different constituencies to cater to. Their parties are doing just that, highlighting the needs of a (of several) niche constituencies while embracing the ideals of multi-racial democracy. All individuals and groups deserve the right to have their interests represented in the political spectrum without having to be apologetic about it.

We are all neglected by government
Apartheid did a very good job in dividing us. We still grapple with tribalism and racial divisions. Even amongst the whites, Anglos and boers are still having their subtle divisions.
Its not the white people standing on stage promoting the killing of other races. its not the white people making racist laws. its always one race doing that.
South Africa is stuck on phenotypes - how a person looks. It's so much more complex and nuanced than that. Please let us all move away from this? There is ONE problem that affects us all. A terrible, despotic government.
The worst thing the DA could have done was to think that no alternative would rise up to rival the coloured they have for so long enjoyed in the Western Cape.
The PA is going to be in Parliament and in the Provincial legislature this year, the CCC is going to be in Provincial legislature so their years of comfort is over and that scares them tremendously.

The "Colored People" (as defined by apartheid classification loving ANC) constitute over 50% of the citizens residing in the Western Cape but the ANC insist they may not hold more than 9% of employment opportunities in the Western Cape.

There have been many issues raised in this chat, for example classifications and the persistence of divisions but hey, this neglect, I want to say that sometimes if we do not visit the areas where each group stays as was determined under apartheid, we will feel that just our communities are being neglected.
We grew up thinking coloured people are much better off than us and that we're the ones who live in poverty. In time I've come to see the many similarities between African black and Coloured black communities. Certainly, the appalling living conditions are the same. I now live near Westbury, I see the poverty also in Newlands and so on, but it's very similar to Vosloorus, where I grew up.
I just wanted to highlight that we share some experiences. BEE has never benefited anyone I personally knew or heard is from Vosloorus, for example. So, the analysis for me misses the point about class. Working class black Africans are not being serviced by the government, as well. Maybe its better to form links between our communities.
We can't form links between communities, culture differs in all communities. We can't link the culture of the Western Cape with that of Limpopo or former Bophuthatswana.

Accept that the implementation is not fairly or equally implemented...in fact colored communities have not benefit as such in terms of this policy. On paper it sounds great but in practice it is almost non-existent.

Honestly, this confuses me a lot.
During the white regime colored brothers n sisters were like samy whites,i was for many times called a K word by them. In my family we have a colored brother who was born of my black sister n a white guy, he took very long time to come to our side coz he thought he was better than us, only when his father was disowned by his parents n his white family he realized that he is part of us.
So Honestly colored fellows n Indian fellows must firstly be honest to themselves.
I think it's a little bit different with Indians since they have their own lands in India but as coloureds its a tough one since they're a hybrid (a result of a european farmer who raped his african maid slave) so practically coloured has no place or lands in S.A. Is like a chinese man having a child with an african woman then that child says they need lands in S.A it's impossible.
Thus, I conquer with you to suggest that coloureds they must just accept maternity rights since they can't qualify for paternity rights.

Therefore coloreds were seen as assets. I had many family members that was exploited that way,but they were still being called "hotentots" and "bushman" and had to bow to their masters like every other non white person had to....

The Coloured community was marginalised, but they were placed on top of Indians and Africans in the South African racial hierarchy. Coloureds were receiving better salaries!!! Now, we need to redress the same imbalances of the past by attending to the needs of the most marginalised group - Africans!!!

It is not true that we were all equally oppressed during apartheid. Some were favoured more than others, especially when it came to state benefits. Coloureds and Indians were allowed to have jobs that blacks were barred from. Let's also talk about the anti-black racism in the coloured and Indian communities. That being said, there were some righteous Coloured and Indian brothers & sisters that fought to end apartheid and institutionalised racism.

The thing about apartheid is if you research it you dont see what normal life was like. All is see is the riots and killings.

Angie Motshekga was well educated studied at witwatersrand, she travelled around south africa teachering and giving lecturers, she then get a job at a school and in 1985 started working at witwatersrand right up until the end of apartheid in 1994..at that time she was fighting apartheid and setting up rallies. i view that as a good life.
Thabo Mbeki lifed in a small village but was able to get such a good education he as accepted to study economices in london. He then got is masters in economices in england. At the time was the best education on the planet. he came back to south africa. After a few years he had to leave to get training around the world to fight apartheid. again i view as having a good live. how many people from a small village or any south African are going to Londan to study and get their masters?
Cyril Ramaphosa his mom was a cleaner and dad was a policeman. Still had enough money to send him to really good schools. he become a law clerk at a white firm in Johannesburg. while he was doing his legal studies at the university of south Africa. He had a job, while studying, while fighting apartheid.
There are so many examples of this. Also understand im not staying they didn't face hardship everyone does. im not saying they didn't face racism, We all do. im saying apartheid was hard on people based on classes more then race.

One thing, apartheid did it's job! Even after 30 years of it being abolished, all South African's are still psychologically wired to segregate ourselves in life and in our minds. I still pray for a day when we can fight for ALL South Africans to have a better life regardless of our "race". We all have a history and an ancestry history, but at the end of the day we are born here, we live here, and we should all be called South African! My hope is the parties can stand together and unseat the current mafia government.
They need to be lifted up and more involved. The coloured people need to get involved and vote, not be apathetic, get the anc out to change the direction the countries economic direction.
I recall sitting in staffing meetings and appointments were always black/white and hardly any appointments for indian, coloureds, asian, in other words no consideration of comptent people but all race based.
The present government is an uncaring government therefore SAns must register to vote and vote them out and a new government that will put SAns first.

These political parties ain't shit when it comes to representing and fighting for the coloured community. The only party that has made a difference and is seen to be taking up coloured issues is the NCC(National Coloured Congress). They might not be everyone's cup of tea, but they willing to fight this dirty fight.
