i agree that the movie was too secular and made for the general audience. It didn’t show Mother Cabrini’s faith and prayer life. We have to remember that Angel Studio is not a Catholic film studio. They were started by the Harmon brothers who are Mormons. We have to be thankful that they decided to make a movie about a saint which they don’t even believe in. This movie highlighted a Catholic saint that might inspire people to learn about the treasures of our Catholic faith. Still grateful and happy with the movie.

We should not be so thankful to the Mormons. They are twisting the truth. On purpose, which is, by the way, the basis behind Mormonism and other sects. The Chosen is no coincide, and this story about a saint is not one either.

Whether the director/producers refused to include it or not, it is sad that the movie did not show the miracle of the spring, in Golden Colorado, where Mother Cabrini tapped a rock, and told her sisters to dig under it to find clean water for drinking and bathing. That spring still flows to this day, well over one hundred years later. Visitors to that shrine in Golden can fill up containers with that same water from faucets installed there. Mother Cabrini performed several miracles while here on earth, but perhaps those miracles were "too Catholic" for the powers that be to include some of them in the movie.

Political movie about women power. Sorry it was an insult to Mother Cabrini, the church and the Italians. Very dark movie.

I hate to burst your bubble but the habit for her order has a large cross sans corpus, you can see this in one of her many portraits. In the words of St. Josemaria Escriba: “That cross without a corpus is a symbol; it has a meaning others won’t see…for that lonely cross is calling for a pair of shoulders to bear it.”
I watched the movie last night and did notice the secular angle on it but overall I liked it, if it inspires someone to delve deeper into Mother Cabrini her devotion to the Sacred Heart, and her deep faith, then I consider it a hit.

To reference a famous movie arc that's the same: Captain America in each of his three movies is the same (even tho he has an arc in the whole "Universe"). There's a classic "This character is correct from the start of the story and the people that must change are the ones around them" arc, and this is it. It's called the flat character arc.
A flat character arc is a type of character development in which a character doesn’t change or grow significantly over the course of the story. The protagonist already knows who they are and their main task is to fight external or internal enemies while remaining true to themselves.
Saint Padre Pío had this type of story too

Her devotion to serving the poor, the immigrant, the orphaned children, sacrificing of herself is her honoring God and living her faith strong. Her mission work was a prayer to God. In my opinion this is a pretty decent production, given the times we live in. It's pretty rare to see a movie these days that portray the church and her religious in a good light. I haven't seen the movie yet, but plan on seeing it. I know that Angel Studios is not a "Catholic" film group. In fact, they are not affiliated with any particular church. That may explain why they did not show more about her praying the rosary or attending mass. I do know a bit about her life. I think this movie is intended to be a biography more than a devoutly Catholic movie. However, Angel Studios is offering some books about her life, including some excerpts from her diary. I think the movie is supposed to make people interested in her as a person (whose life has a broad appeal) and I am hoping that because of the movie, many will be intereseted like you in finding out more about her life and her faith.

I agree with you and Catherine. I did not like the movie/storyline. The sets were fantastic and the actors were excellent. I just don’t understand how you can tell the story of a nun, a saint at that, and not mention God. The saints are always known for what they were able to do with God’s help. Nowhere in this movie does one get the understanding that she could do all things through Christ, who strengthens her. To me this movie just capitalized on her feminism. She could’ve been a Disney princess… A STRONG woman. You can’t make a movie about a saint and not include his/her spiritual side. Believing in God is the core of her being and the impetus behind all the good works that she did. I feel they hijacked Mother Caprini to make a feminist movie.
Lastly, the Catholic Church gives us saints to show us how the common ordinary man can overcome the difficulties of life. They are meant to inspire us to a greater good. We can pray for their intercession, knowing they have accomplished a feat that was most difficult. Their accomplishment was done through Christ. No where in this movie does one come to realize all of her accomplishments we’re done through Christ. I’m sure if you would’ve spoken to Mother Cabrini, she would say, Christ did this work, I was just His instrument.
Mother Cabrini please intercede and pray for us.

She is a Nun, A Catholic Nun who did remarkable things for the world, and her prayer life was the source of her strength. It was beautifully done, but when Catholics don’t make the move, this is the outcome. The beautiful spiritual side of our Faith was shunned. The good news is, we know the truth! I think the movie is excellent because it’s introducing a post- Christian culture to Christianity and its commission to serve orphans, the abused and the poor selflessly. And it does show Cabrini waiting on God patiently for direction, it shows how she suddenly knows what to do and how to carry herself in very difficult situations. It shows how God can speak to His people through dreams to encourage them to continue in the thing he has called them to do. And she does cite the scripture about “they can do all things through him who strengthens them” Though the word Christ was dropped from the scripture, it is implied . While the name Jesus is not specifically stated in the film, everyone does know that Jesus is supposed to be the center of the Catholic Church and Christianity. I think after seeing this movie people who would’ve been offended by the name of Jesus may actually pick up a Bible for the very first time, and perhaps visit a church for the very first time, or at least be open to a conversation about Him, which currently is very impossible with many people. As far as your personal faith struggles go, that is best resolved in small group Bible studies where a group of friends reads the Bible together and reflect on the passages and shares their insights. It is a place where we share our struggles with one another and pray for one another and pray for the world around us. The Holy Spirit has been given to us to help us interpret the word of God correctly. His job is to lead us into all truth, to bring the proper words from the Scriptures to our remembrance at the right time, and to strengthen us in our innermost being as we step out to fill our individual purpose on earth. One sad thing about the Catholic Church, is that it has for the most part discouraged people from studying God‘s word for themselves in many cases, not all of course. And for whatever reason it has marketed itself as being the ‘one true church’. The truth is, there’s no such thing as a perfect church, only a perfect God, and His perfect Son and Holy Spirit which leads His people into the truth that they need to know, to fulfill their individual calling. We all have a role to play on earth and serving one another, and we will be accountable to God for not figuring out what that is. It is clear that Cabrini did receive from God her specific calling. When she went to the pope to state her case, she referenced that the woman who told the disciples about the risen lord was a woman granted this commission, therefore God can talk to us also. You don’t have to be a nun for that to happen. There have been many Christians from many denominations who are women who achieve amazing things, as well as men, facing incredible opposition. I think UA-cam has a lot to offer you in the way of hearing what others have to say about how to strengthen your faith. George Mueller’s life story on rescuing orphans in Bristol is free to see on several channels. , and his book is still in print “With Christ in the school of prayer which will help a lot. I personally really love listening to Robert Morris, Jimmy Evans, and John Bevere. They break down really difficult concepts in God’s word beautifully. I think Jimmy Evans is my favorite. I love his series called the hurt pocket.

My “Mom Take” for what it’s worth. I was incredibly disappointed.
To make a long story short: Cinematography was INCREDIBLE but if you plan to see it brush up on her true history first. And make sure kids are old enough to understand that filmmaking often involves taking license with facts as a plot device.
    1) The name Jesus was not mentioned once. She was never depicted praying except one meal prayer.
    2) God was never mentioned.
    3) The film took artistic license at the expense of the Bishop and clergy with the exception of the Pope who was characterized more balanced. It’s my understanding her mission was approved and she did not have to fight as was portrayed! She was not likely confrontational as she was portrayed consistently in film. That’s not to say she didn’t battle though setbacks because she most certainly did! In reality, Bishop put her up when she arrived but in movie he left them on own to stay on a brothel: while clever story device to introduce them to a prostitute that would be used to highlight Cabrini’s love for all converting hearts, not accurate or good impression to leave with little ones about clergy. The movie was consistent with theme of unfairly painting all clergymen as spiritually bankrupt juxtaposed to the stunning beauty of the buildings of the Church. If I were a young child or Protestant watching film, it would be easy to conclude she was fearless and faithful in spite of Church rather than her deep devotion to the Sacred Heart. Very few would take away that her religion formed her faith in any way other than to test it! We can all empathize with the reality that we all contend with extra sanctifying clergy at times as has been the case throughout history, but the reality is that it is the exception rather than rule. It made me feel so protective of our priests! What a shame!
    5) I personally think a woman such as Saint Cabrini would be disappointed her story was told in a manner that excluded Christ and the reason that most immigrants were treated so poorly: their Catholicism. Her witness also brought many to the Church as she was so highly respected and loved! She taught the catechism and inspired people to give their lives to Christ and serving others!
    6) On a positive note: the scene where her habit was referenced as appearing as her “suit of armor” was powerful and beautiful. I also liked that her nurturing femininity is what won hearts of those she assisted.
All that being said, the film has peaked my curiosity to learn more about Saint Cabrini.
This movie was recommended as alternative and curious d anyone else has seen to agree?

I have seen Cabrini twice and I loved it. I had heard the complaint that there wasn’t enough of her devotion to God in the movie, and yes I too would have loved to have seen more of that.
However, this wasn’t that kind of movie. It’s not made by Catholics for Catholics as many Saint movies are. It’s made by Christians for a varied audience. I think in a time when the Church is being criticized for treatment of women this beautifully shows what women have and continue to do in the Church without being about feminism and showing her as a “girl boss.”
I really hope this movie inspires Catholic filmmakers to make Saint movies of this quality in the future.

I think the Christian message is clearly implicit in Cabrini's perpetual works of Charity in the movie, which can be much more powerful than too much explicit Theological messaging that would surely turn off a lot of non Christians. Its the prudent choice to make if you intend to broaden interest of those who are instantly turned off by any religious scenes, and thereby - hopefully inspire that cohort of viewers who need the message of charity work more than we Christians do. The movie will not just to inspire Catholic Christians to do Gods work, but non Christians as well for sure.

As a Catholic, I too, would much prefer to see the development of an interior relationship with Jesus & Mary in the lives of saints. That being said, I think this movie will reach a lot of non-Catholics and even non-Christians, perhaps a lot of immigrants and descendants of Italian immigrants. I think this could turn out to be an excellent vehicle to attract nominal Christians and non believers to the Catholic faith.

These things may seem like fantasy in our culture these days, but there are people today who are this passionately devoted to neighbor and God. Comparing oneself to them is not helpful, junping IN and becoming part of the river of Gods Love and Solution is helpful.❤❤❤❤

I’m a Protestant with a Reformed soteriology, but I was born and baptized Catholic and married in a Catholic Church- with much of my extended family still devoutly Catholic. I’ve seen it twice now. I knew nothing about her before seeing the film. After my first time, which was at the NYC premiere in Times Square, I went to her shrine the following day and read a bit about her. I learned that her whole motivation for going to the ends of the earth and opening these orphanages was for evangelism. This made my second viewing far more emotional- knowing the heart of the real Cabrini- a woman willing to give her whole life for the sake of the Gospel and finding her full satisfaction in living for Him. This resonates with me deeply.
I’d love to see what you think of His Only Son. Lent is a great time to watch it as we near Easter and the one year anniversary of when it premiered in theaters. I’ll warn you: it’s a slow burn. But if you’re looking for a film that honors the Lord and points to Christ, that was 100 percent my aim.

One thing that I like about the movie is as someone who likes Opus Dei - "make your work Holy" this movie is the epitome of that philosophy.
This really tugged at my heart to make a lot of money someone like St Cabrini can use funding for her amazing projects.
I got a semester left in my computer science degree! 🥳
I like seeing spiritual growth too but IMO opinion, I feel the traditionalist movement isn't focused on professional development. There were so many undertones on how people can grow and look at what has done as a religious under the Pope's and Archbishop's constraints. Despite all the adversity, she was still able to come out on top.
I felt there was a moment where she represented Mary, showing the motherly love to the orphans, that they never had.
From the beginning of the movie when she told the Pope, "this world is too small for my dreams" to that effect, then to see her make missionaries from the West to the East, which was her original goal, it was amazing.
I felt like the biggest theme was through all God, all things are possible. Amen.

If we can all learn from her love and sacrifice to carry on God’s mission which this movie does for me, that’s what I’m hoping that people get out from the movie. Not what you’re criticizing for. Production made to please everyone, praise own ambition not drawn from God as you mentioned, and to earn loads of money without reflecting the real truth. I just saw it yesterday with my wife and sister in law and we all loved it, the acting and cinematography was awesome. We thought the woman who plays Saint Mother Cabrini should win the Oscar. The movie is centered on her human struggles with discrimination and political forces to accomplish the mission given to her by the Pope to go to New York city and help the homeless Italian children living in poverty. There are no scenes of her praying the Rosary but this movie was undeniably Catholic and it's better than 99.9% of the trashy movies out there now. It's a movie not a catechism class.

As to the comment 8699 you stated "it did highlight the strength of a woman in a positive way" -- which it did. My question is if Mother Cabrini watched the movie, which focused on her strength as a woman, without any praying (except for a 10 second grace before meals) or mention of Jesus what would MC's reaction have been? An easy clear opportunity for prayer would have been when they arrived in NYC and stayed the first night in a brothel. They are warned that the pimp will come knocking down the door and to barricade themselves in. The next scene you see the nuns all asleep except for MC who is sitting at the end of the bed waiting for the anticipated bang on the door -- she's just sitting there -- why couldn't they have had her quietly praying her rosary? Just like Our Lady always points to her Son -- so with the saints (it wasn't "my strength as a woman") it was God's grace. Integrating her strength as a woman with God's grace would have made it a great movie.

As a Catholic, I understand the sentiments. However the purpose of THIS movie is for ones who are on an early stage of the spiritual journey. If however Catholics want a better movie then they must create a studio and a distribution network like Angel Studio did. In a world where 2 out of 3 people are not Christians, I think Angel Studio did a good job at least showing the crucifix worn around the neck. As for 'praying in the movie', prayer is an intimate conversation with God, not limited by our physical abilities or disabilities. Drawing, painting, or creating art may also be a form of prayer, offering one's creativity to God.

I saw it today and thought it was very well done and impressive in most areas. I do agree that the lack of a visible relationship with God is a failing, although I knew that going in from having watched reviews. And I did have to roll my eyes at that one line; a few women in the theater enjoyed it, though. Bottom line is that it should have broad appeal (no pun intended; just caught it upon rereading 😊) - especially for those of us whose ancestors came through Ellis Island - and it seems that was more important to Angel than making a Christianity-centered film. So be it; maybe some secular folks will come away with a little more respect for the Church thanks to sympathetic portrayals of the Pope and the Archbishop.

I actually did not mind that line at the end. I don't think it was meant to say that women are better than men or no man could do what Cabrini did. Rather, I took it more as them saying that in certain ways, women can do it better than men. Just like there are some things men are better at at. Some things women do better. Does it surprise you that it took a woman to build all those orphanages for those poor children? Women tend to be more empathetic.

Her lack of praying bothered me as well, in addition to some liberties it took with historical accuracy, like Lithgow's character. The fact is that Mother Cabrini was a deeply spiritual woman who was deeply enmeshed in prayer and scripture....she was quintessentially a Catholic Christian. Maybe the directors wanted to play it safe by not stressing this side of her, but you dilute the story somewhat. On the other hand, its good to show the story of someone who has fully committed her life to Christian belief and practice. At the end of the day, this movie is about a good person who is trying to spread the Gospel, while helping the most needy. In a decaying and destructive culture, one can only be pleased to encounter something like this.
P.S. For those of you who might like spiritual type movies. Let me recommend another movie. Its "Bakhita, from slave to saint".
Beautiful movie. There is one scene where she realizes that Christ is her Savior and she becomes a Christian at that moment. I was just deeply touched. I rarely watch a movie more than once, but I have pulled it out to rewatch many times.

Thank You Katherine for your honest review. I watched it recently myself in theatres and felt the same about many of the key points you made. It was definitely not Catholic enough and was more secular to the audience. For a great Saint who had a strong devotion to the Sacred Heart of Jesus and to our Blessed Mother, they did not depict that enough or emphasized her spiritual life which was her actual main focus while doing her best to save as many souls. Overall, I really did enjoy the movie but again was not Catholic enough and like you said Katherine, it was more of a biopic if anything. Also, I found out the relationship with the Irish Archbishop depicted in the film was incorrect and actually he encouraged St. Cabrini to continue on her mission New York that helped spread the word of her work to have other Bishops across United States to invite to come to their own States, of course one of them being Denver.

💯% agree. They missed a chance to share the gospel when the prostitute says, “There’s not enough water in the world to cleans me.” Cabrini says, “I can relate to you” instead of sharing the Good News that the blood of Jesus has paid the debt of her sins & has cleaned her completely. Yes, cinematically beautiful but could have been infinitely more powerful if the gospel of Jesus Christ was shared. What a shame it wasn’t.

Thank you so much!! Don't feel bad at all... Your totally right! I haven't seen it and the trailer told me everything you said but now I have a confirmation. Saved me and my brother and his mom a lot of grief. Thank you. It's our cultures trauma drama fixation I believe. Things used to be over spiritualized in literature but now it is all over humanized if it is about holiness.

I didn't watch the movie yet, but I heard similar reviews, less God and prayers even though the movie about a nun and saint, the first saint in the US, such great work she did can't be separated from her Catholic faith. I think i'll wait till its available for streaming. thanks you Kat for sharing, have a blessed lent.

It was not meant to be a Catholic movie but rather a Christian movie and a historical bio movie at the same time. If you want a Catholic movie, start a studio and start making Catholic movies. For a non Hollywood studio like Angel Studios I think it was excellent! All the actors, especially the kids the cinematography the settings and costumes were top notch. I would definitely want to watch it again! And she did pray in Chapel and there were quotes from the Bible and she referred to God and Scriptures a bunch of times. So her whole life was a depiction of her spirituality!

Mentioning "Christ" isn't explicitly a 'Roman Catholic' thing. All Christians should see the importance of that. No prayers to Christ or the Holy Mother?

I totally disagree with your review. I thought the movie was phenomenally well done. I am not a Catholic but appreciate Catholicism very much and I thought they did a excellent job of not over infusing it with so much religion like some of the other movies have in the past. The message was exceedingly powerful and that should be our takeaway.

It is a long movie, I agree. I was done after 2 hours. I did like the movie. I'm not a Catholic so I can't expect to be able to understand the Catholic mindset. But from an outsiders point of view I thought it was great. There were a couple of things that I was disappointed with. They didn't mention Jesus when they had the opportunity. The main character didn't talk about relying on the Lord but on herself. That disappointed me. Someone here in the comments mentioned that they didn't pray. That's true. Also someone mentioned that there was no character growth in the main character. Sometimes a character doesn't have a character arc because they are a rock of inspiration, but other characters do. Like the girl who was a whore who had massive character growth. The children had character growth. Other characters had growth in the film. The Pope, the newspaper guy... Really good acting, really good photography, really good sets. I liked it.

I suggest people go to THE CATHOLIC ESQUIRE and watch his review of Cabrini. His great-grandfather actually knew Mother Cabrini personally! His review is titled: "The Good, The Bad, and The Ugly". Needless to say, he was not impressed with the movie Cabrini.

Gosh, my heart hurts knowing that your criticisms will discourage people from seeing this excellent movie. As a catholic I KNOW through her courage and accomplishments that she prayed. It’s a given. Do I have to see her make the sign of the cross or say the rosary? This movie is inspirational, and left me feeling ashamed that I am not doing enough for our immigrants. Right or wrong they are here now.

Thank you so much for your honest review. I was a bit worried about it since its so popular and the trailer looked really feminist... its too bad they don't make more good CATHOLIC films! "For Greater Glory" is the last one the I found was really beautiful, well done, not cringe and very Catholic.

OR you can think of it as the exterior view of someone's life where you really don't get to see their intimate moments of prayer and devotion. You just see them out in the world doing what they do. That perspective isn't necessarily wrong. Also, it is just a movie, a particular kind of art which allows for a wide variety of expression.

It's a given where she drew her strength from. When Cabrini saw the need to help the imigrants so strongly, it turned into a passion. Then her journey to getting what she needed to help the imigrants became a battle. So in her quest to get help create change, she tried and approached many men in power positions presenting the situations.. They discriminated against her as a woman and refused to help her because she was a woman. It was the injustice cabrini saw against the imigrant people that was important she find change. She persevered and she crossed that forbidden line women were told to stay away from. She was a strong woman. Her message came across loud and clear. Don't ever give up on your dreams and goals. I could go on, but I really liked the movie. It was about her life and how she helped help imigrants, Italians and people in other countries through her mission in life. No, it was not about praying throughout the movie.

I actually think that it’s the strong feminism within the movie that just might attract more than Christians and Catholics.
This is a movie that I think, given the right advertising, can actually reach across the fence and appeal to those who need to see a movie like this the most: liberals.
I don’t know, maybe I’m wrong… but I really believe that everybody, regardless of what side of the political fence you’re on, should give this movie a chance.
    Just my two cents.

I agree with you 100%. I hope you get to see the series of Saint Teresa of Jesus made by TVE. It’s one of the best movies of a Saint ever. The actress is Concha Velasco and she is is phenomenal
