How are you gonna so casually and humbly crack the code to their sound so well? This is great. The guitar tone and bass tone seem to be spot-on, I think the OG band members might notice super slight things but to my ear if I didn't know this was not the band I'd hear the instrumental and think it was really them. Vocal effect chain and singing combined really nailed it, I think you've got the closest to how they run the vocals for their albums of everyone I've seen trying to imitate the band.
Thank you for the amazing comment. I guess I've been studying the Deftones sound for like the last 25 years. And it was great to finally put all that info into a video :)
Epic!!! Gary I remember when you had about 1k subscribers and have witnessed you put in the work and put out awesome content time and time again. This guy deserves sooo much more recognition
I’ve been using the JMP for years because of Stef’s influence. A recommendation for people who really want to go for the overall total sound, Steven Slate makes a Terry Date drum sample library that uses the exact snare from White Pony. Sounds fantastic out of the box.
Yeah thats the drum kit I used for this. I actually sgould of mentioned that. So its the Slate Drums. And then I used Slate trigger which has the Deftones snare sample.
Your vocal chain sounds great. I’m getting collective soul mixed with smashing pumpkins from your actual singing. Which isn’t Chino but is still pretty cool to me!
I dig it! Sounds pretty close to the album sound. Nembrini Audio has a sale right now on their amp sims, and one of them was their take on the JMP-1. They also have an ADA-1 plugin if you ever want an easy way to do the Adrenaline or Around the Fur tone. I really need to up my drum programming game. I can do blast beats and carpet rolls with the best of them, but the more groovy patterns I definitely could stand to learn.
Thanks. Will check out the Nembrini stuff. Adrenaline definitely has a sound. Would be cool to replicate that. For the drum programming and groove, try adding some swing to your quantising of the drums.
@GaryHiebner I usually do a bit to make the drums sound a bit more human before I even touch the humanize button. I focus a lot on altering the velocities to make a more natural sounding pattern. I'm just so used to programming extreme metal drums, that the more subdued drum work and putting it together somewhat eludes me
This is the sound I have always chased after, for better or worse. You got pretty close, nicely done! Looking at this I am reminded I do not need a 7 string, every time I am about to get one I have to remind myself I don't need one. Have you tried the JMP-1 sim from Nembrini? It's called the JMP Pro if I remember correctly. Would be great to see you comparing them to each other and see which one can get closer to the actual tone.
Thanks so much for this video. I managed to get a guitar really recently and would like to play some deftones stuff so this is a god send. I wanted to ask if you had a video of recording guitars for beginners ? I keep getting this really hissy sound of noise and I am really really relying on my noise gate. I think that your explanation style is phenomenal and would really appreciate a video if there isn't one.
This track sounds like it came stright off white pony! Awesome song!
Thanks! That was the goal. To fit right into White Pony.
They use drop C on the whole album!? Man you are taking me back and this is awesome info!
Awesome!

bro that brings me back :)
well done
Hot Damn Gman, this was epic. Hands down.
Thank you!
Your track came up awesome, love it
Thanks!
You should do a video on Thornhill, if you like loathe you'll like them, they're albums are quite different
Love to see your take on their guitar tone
Thornhill is amazing. The Dark Pool is one of my favorites. They've taken an interesting direction now with the sort of Muse-inspired sound.

The White Pony snare is technically two snares layered. Ludwig Black Beauty and an Orange County Percussion and Drums maple shell vented snare
I really dig this channel. Had to subscribe from my new channel. Thanks, this is one of my very favorite albums EVER!
Thanks for the sub. Yeah White Pony is amazing
Gary is awesome!!
Thank you!

Haha! Yeah I know I can't actually sound like Chino. But gave it a bash.
Hi I'm telling everyone that I know you now. 🤘 I am impressed. Thanx for the Viper.
Haha!

Nice. Even programming blast beats requires some skills with getting the right velocities.
@@GaryHiebner absolutely. It's a craft all to itself

No I havent tried the Nembrini one. Will definitely check it out. Thanks.

I don't. But I should actually probably add a beginners recording video. Maybe I will do one soon. Stay tuned.....
@@GaryHiebner Thank you so much!
How to sound like diamond eyes or koi no yokan?
Definitely.
What these are your vocals? Unreal, you are very good at it
Yeah my own vocals. Tried my own stab at a Deftones song with vocals
And thus chevelle was born
Great tone and vocals!
Next whats going on with that tone on adrenaline? It sounds great but so off.
Haha! Adrenaline does sound a bit off tone wise.

please How to Sound Like around the fur
Great Idea.
