  • Doug Stuman with IT Creations with Dell’s R750 server we are building for a client. The system is equipped with Dell’s integrated Dell Remote Access Controller or iDRAC, as are all PowerEdge Servers for at chassis and remote access of the system. The current version is 9.0. This is a great tool for monitoring your server remotely as it is compatible with most browsers and provides a wealth of information. We have talked about iDRAC in the past and I wanted to show you some of the features, as I usually concentrate on the hardware. iDRAC can help manage one to many servers and has an easy-to-use graphical interface. We are not going to show… Watch the video!

I have an R750. It's a lovely server, but power hungry. It uses ~380 watts at idle. By comparison, my R740 uses ~185 watts running 30 or so VMs. The R750 is also loud. Mine came with very high performance ("gold") fans. The machine was not usable in a home lab configured that way. I was forced to replace the fans with standard R750 fans. If you're wondering about fan speed control, Dell locks out the ability for anything other than iDRAC to control fan speeds, and regardless of the fan speed percentage chosen in iDRAC, which can go as low as 5%, the fans won't actually spin down below 33% to 37%. This applies to all iDRAC 9 machines, including the R740. A very nice machine, indeed, but not for every non-datacenter application.

Thank you for adding that real-world information Jeff. Very good to know, as all of these platforms are quite expensive and it's never a good surprise when then don't meet your expectations. Although, I have found all of these servers, across manufacturers, to scream like a banshee when under load. Thanks for commenting and watching!
