Here were a few notes on budgets I took in case helpful for yall: $10-30k to record songs $40-60k tour support $50-70k low end marketing to $100ks+ for marketing Reading between the lines it feels like ballpark ~$100k is what they'll spend to "bet" on a newer artists on the lower end. Not 100% sure :)
Thanks for outlining this! Yeah the British Phonographic Industry (BPI) puts the average cost of breaking an artist globally at between $485,000 and $1.8 million. "Breaking" is obviously subjective. But yeah, these are very loose ballpark numbers that Sub Pop is working with.
I'd be interested to know how much of that marketing fund goes to the basics like Meta ads, IG ads, publicist, etc. I'm sure with Sub Pop such a large portion of that gets allocated to video / art / creative so I'd love to know what their average marketing-marketing budget is
Great interview! Thank you, Ari & Tony! Mister Anderson would make a great addition to the Sub Pop Records family! Hit me up. I've got so much more music to release, so let's work together and make something incredible. I release new music every Friday!
I love Tony. I met him at the Subpop showcase at SXSW in 2023. I made him promise and swear he would assess my project - Waves_On_Waves - and give me a blunt yes or no if we could be a good fit for Subpop. I never got a response, but dig the label and the dude nevertheless. Great interview.
Hopefully it takes over the music industry too cause it’s Fu$ked up nowadays….. how many other bands ( rock/ alternative) do you know that are as big as Greta Van Fleet? I mean they got signed over 8 years ago, but still…. My band has been going strong for 7 years and no label like that has approached us, idk if they got lucky or if it’s cause they copied a legendary band’s early style and influence and someone in the industry saw it and rolled with it and got them where they are today. I feel like the only big new stars are Hardy, Morgan Wallen, Jelly Roll, Post Malone etc. idk if getting signed in the 70’s and 80’s was that much easier…. Sure seems like it was.

It definitely does not take 3k to record songs.
