This was very insightful. Especially the emphasis on having a story. From a personal experience I've found finding a narrative the hardest thing to do, but I can imagine it being right up there with the most important things to have in your locker from a promotional perspective. With the right narrative it can really help you find the natural home/demographic for your work. I guess this is why I've held back from making risk investments in marketing my project. The reality is it would be pointless, you can't be just 'Music Guy' in such a saturated market.
I’d love to see a similar video but with someone from an indie talking about less mainstream music to see if there are any differences in their processes

I really enjoyed this podcast with Joe Kentish. Extremely informative and enjoyable. The goal is not the label, it's to make great music and have a successful career. The label may be there to help.
A&R is the friendly, personable face who gets the young musician to sign all of their most profitable years over to a record label for a meager percentage. As a musician they aren't your enemy but they sure as hell aren't to be trusted unless you want to go bankrupt.
@@xXAjaxXx A funny 'band development story': In the late sixties the famous danish band, savage rose, was offered a record deal by RCA. They went to USA and RCA only had one condition - that they should go to Vietnam and play for the American soldiers. The band refused to sign, which made the RCA guys freak out completely. RCA had their passports and refused to give it to them, before they - as a punishment - had played 3 times a day for a month at their new club in LA, without pay. ua-cam.com/video/xLCJr-WXLlg/v-deo.html ua-cam.com/video/kFyfAw8Pw1w/v-deo.html Possibly, the record companies have 'earned' their reputation.

Universalmusicgroup.... God Bless the Real Music .... not that shit .
So informative! God Bless you for sharing Joe! Great interview! Thanks So Much! A Big Thank you to Burstimo, too! Excellent choice! :)
Joe is super cool , should have his own podcast haha
that’s why discography’s finished .... you put a garage band man , without any skill , any Academy , any notion of music , just putting samples , riffs, and grooves here and there .... and you really think you’ve made the MUSIC ??? Or just a basic autotune Voice , that can sell the song for one year and then disappear?? Sorry ... but this is not Music Industry, this should be called “ Improvisation Industry “ , and that’s not professional enough, to associate all that with a Big Label like Warner or worse ... Universalmusicgroup.... God Bless the Real Music .... not that shit .
This was really helpful. Thanks for sharing !
So awesome! Learned a lot! Thank you sooo much for this spectacular interview!
Absolutely fantastic! Thank you all so much!
Love his thoughtful answers. He's not a jaded industry exec.

teehee
This gives me a lot of hope as a small musician

this is such an eye openining interview...ive always wanted to get into the industry as an A&R.
Lovely interview 👌🏻💕🎶
Thank you!
What great insight, thank you!!!
Wow this was an insightful interview! Thank you for this
fantastic video fr fr on dis one
this gives me strength ... i won't surrender
I’d love to see a similar video but with someone from an indie talking about less mainstream music to see if there are any differences in their processes
Thanks for the suggestion! We'll have a think and see who we can invite on :)
@@Burstimo Amazing looking forward to it!
Love this video. Thank you Burstimo for another informational and dope video!
Excellent interview with sensible advice and an insight to the modern day music business 👍
Great video! I'm a song writer and have been for over 10 years. I am yet to try and get anything recorded or signed etc.. a video on how to get your songs infront of the right people would be really interesting! ✌🏻

Very helpful!
Thank you for your time and space 💫
Amazing! Loving all your guys podcasts - super helpful!
"The successful artist with an audience is the answer."
“I know of one instance in the last 20 years where someone was signed because of an unsolicited demo sent to an A&R department” ...so you’re saying it’s possible...
It happens a lot more than they’ll tell you. A lot more. Having said that if you want to get to labels go to songwriters or producers first. Songwriters especially as they are fighting to get their songs out there due to artists who are shit writers putting their shit out
@@kehindea What if you're both a songwriter AND producer, trying to network deeper into the music biz?...
you don't WANT to reach out to labels. You want THEM to reach out to you, because that means you have leverage
@@spacerips172 for sure for sure, but at the end of the day, it’s like fishing: the more lines you have in the water, the more likely you’ll get a bite.
This is amazing, super grateful for your channel and information that you give out! Many thanks! :)
Great interview! Thanks guys!
This is a really interesting interview. This guy really knows what he's talking about.
Crazy some these artists are generating tens of millions of dollars in streaming revenue
The was amazing advice. Incredible insight into the industry. I'm super grateful for his honesty about it too, seems like a genuine dude! Thanks for this!
Thank you for doing such a great video this was much needed!!!
That was a great talk!
I really enjoyed this podcast with Joe Kentish. Extremely informative and enjoyable. The goal is not the label, it's to make great music and have a successful career. The label may be there to help.
exactly, love that mindset
Upcoming A&Rs ... let's Go! ✨🌱😇🌱✨
" We don't want to control the artist", other than making them give up all rights to their own music and letting them cover all expenses!!

Possibly, the record companies have 'earned' their reputation.
lol that is true. You gotta be really smart to not to get ripped off.
Lmfao.
Think of the A&R as the mask in front of the monster you can’t see. Which is the label.
This is a nice podcast. Thank you for the insight.
Great Content! Got so much to learn. Thankyou!
This was so insightful! Love from India 🙏❤
Very encouraging to hear Joe’s perspective, especially considering the position he’s in and how demonized that position has been in the last couple decades. I loved listening to this conversation, thanks so much guys.
