  • About the Lecture:
Dr. Enrico Suardi will provide a tribute for an extraordinary Italian diplomat who passed away this year. Giandomenico Picco, as a special assistant to the UN Secretary General Perez De Cuellar, negotiated the Soviet withdrawal from Afghanistan, the end of the Iran-Iraq war, and freed hostages in Lebanon, including seven Americans. He will highlight Picco’s unconventional diplomatic ground work based on the review of his book Man Without a Gun and review some of his conceptual work in peacemaking summarized in The Fog of Peace, the Human Face of Conflict Resolution that he coauthored with the psychotherapist Gabrielle Rifkind.
Dr. Baiju Gandhi will discuss the Camp David Accords with a focus on describing the psychological and human factor elements involved that contributed to the success of the Accords. He will give a brief background on Camp David and note how the structure of the summit and the personalities of the principals involved led to an eventual agreement.
