  • After 33 years we are in a new era and a new year 2023!! It was back in 1990 a small village existed in the tropical rainforests of The Tully Gorge Far North Queensland. The village was known to its inhabitants as "Cardstone". The village consisted of: a Primary School, Social Club, Tennis Courts, Accommodation for permanent residents, Single men's quarters, General Store, and Australia Post Office, and Playground Facilities, and Park and Recreation areas. In the late 1980's the Kareeya Power Station, became fully automatic, thus eliminating the need for a large number of staff and workers, these workers and their families were relocated back to the nearby township of Tully. Only a handful of workers were now needed to maintain the Power Station, and these people reside in Tully. The houses survive throughout North Queensland, after being relocated to new owners. Shortly after, the graders were bought in, and everything was ripped up, roads, slabs, foundations, to enable nature to take its course, and return to pristine rainforest again. Visitors will find it extremely hard to even find remnants of this little community, it has literally vanished into history!!
Recorded in the year of 1990.

Erased, but for those lucky enough to live there always in our hearts and never forgotten. I lived in Cardstone from 1983 to 1988. I lived opposite the post office and tennis court with my family and attended school in grades 1-3. I will forever treasure my memories of the people and place.💕

Brought back lots of childhood memories both good and bad.
Seen our house for the last time Brought tears to my eyes. Stood on those front stairs as an bride with Dad beside me.
    He's also gone.
Lost my younger brother while living here. 35 years ago.
But we had some great time in the village and in the river.
    Thanks for sharing.

Glad you liked it, I was out there today after 33 years, and there is still remnants of the old village still visible in places, apparently in 2018, it was cleaned up quite considerably, to the point where a lot of building slabs and building remains are still evident, even the roads!!

Thanks so much for that video. It brought a tear to my eye, a rare event. I lived at Cardstone from about 1961 to 1965-6; did school from Gr1 to Gr4 there; both the "old school" and the "new" one. My father worked there again later on from 1983? to 1987 when he retired and I visited often. It was a wonderful time in my life and that of our family. I'm going to visit again soon. Miss the place.

Hey mate, lovely video, lot's of Cardstone people really appreciate this video. There is a 100 year anniversary event that they are doing in Tully and I am putting together a few videos. Just wondering if it'd be possible to show this video as they want Cardstone footage? Obviously would give full credit and want to make sure everything is all good copyright-wise. Thanks mate.

I grant you full permission to use the footage, it would be an honor to have it played back to past residents of this once prosperous and beautiful locale.👍🙂
