  • Trying to find the village of Cardstone which was razed in 1990. There’s no obvious evidence that it ever existed these days!
Also, Tully’s giant gum boot, Kareeya Power Station, Tully Gorge and a hell of a lot of rain!

10:24 I lived at Cardstone village as a kid from about 1963 to 1967. Was a great time in my life. My father went back later on to work there again in about 1984-5 until he retired. Part of his job as Power Station Superintendent was the dismantling of the village. still love the place even though the village is gone. When I last visited there, it was very hard to recognise the features of the village that I remember from childhood and 20 years later visiting my parents as the rejuvenation of rainforest was well underway. Dad retired in 1987 and left Cardstone then.

At 7.22 you pass a right turn. That is where cardstone was. That road led to the post office. And the town hall etc. there was a tennis court and park and 26 or so houses there. We would have parties in the hall for every occasion and every one would be there. We were a big family

That waterfall you showed at 9:05 on the vertical rock face was directly opposite the PS Super's house. It was the first Cardstone house you come across when driving from Tully. So, river and that waterfall on your right and first house on the left; then you come across the village, also on the left. I have to go back again after watching this. 😢😊

I just got back from there today. Where you pulled up at the Wier there is a road (you can see it in your video) across the other side of the main road and that is where the tennis court is. You can still see concrete walls, driveways and kerbing and make out the streets. Further along the road toward the power station is a concrete pad area and stairs which looked to be a shop or post office. Hope this helps for your next trip. 😊

I lived in Cardstone from 1983-1988 and attended school there. I lived opposite the post office and tennis court. I could see the waterfall out of my bedroom window and went to sleep listening to it every night. I went back 4 years ago and found the slab of the tennis court and my old driveway, a few of the trees were still in the yard. I miss it still today.

When you stood looking at the weir, you were just upstream from the village. My street was the second street as you drove in from Tully and was directly opposite the large waterfall you saw downstream from the weir.

I lived at cardstone back in the 80s. The best place on earth to grow up. We swam in the Tully river, everyday. We rode inner tubes down the rapids and even almost drowned a few times there. We would walk to the power station to visit our dads who worked there. Was so very sad to see it has been wiped completely away. What a waste. Why demolish such a beautiful place. I miss it

Driving back to tully when you left the hydro station, (approx 1-2) you passed a small turn off where alot of houses once where, the entrance was bitumen and can see a few old stumps. It opens up to cleared land.

@@PaddyOutback 👍 theres a couple little spots but 1 main distinctive one that stands out & can easily see it while driving. Obviously on the rainforest side, not river side. They're all past the camping/day use area turn off.. if you can, try go on a not rainy day, views are amazing. good luck in further travels 👍

Great video man, I went to High School in Tully. Things in Tully grow a lot faster than anywhere else, with 2 mayor cyclones 2006 & 2011 I'm not surprised there isnt anything left of the town.

Yeah, it’s a tough place sometimes with regard to the weather! The good news is that I have received new information since I made the video so I’ll be having another crack at finding it soon.

Not embarrassing at all! How many people know anything about a small village in FNQ that doesn’t even exist anymore? I just stumbled across it and figured I’d go for a look!

Mate, I have a video of the village before the houses were removed, we went down to capture the place for ourselves. The village is close to the day swimming area / camping area, one fellow said: "There is a dirt road, which could've been the main entrance?", he could be right?? Have contacted past residents for video copies, and had no response!! I'm considering putting the video up onto UA-cam in the near future??

A noble effort. Hope you find the ghost town or someone who lived there at some point. Maybe a few questions at the local coffee shop in Tully would turn up someone who knows someone? Good luck and well done!

I don't anything about cardstone but I have been white water rafting in tully river. It's not as full on as you expect but it is fun with a group of friends. Also you can access and camp at koomboolooba dam from ravenshoe.

In fairness with that much rain falling a hydroelectric dam is genius. Big spinny turbines make the power duh.
That's absolutely mad, just erased a town like. Makes you think what we may be standing on history wise, repurposing has been going on forever, look at the poor romans and the vatican nicking all their class marble, which they nicked from someone else. Mad.
Offline maps are mad hard to remember in fairness, pure effort.
Not taking the bike was wise, would have been interesting tho!!
