@Gee-xb7rt I thought the movie was a long exploration of love on every level and from every side, and it is played on top of a retelling and twisting of an actual historical event. It showed the ugliness and beauty of love. There was grief, jealousy, sex as a weapon on the negative side. Catalina was in the middle of psychosis in the first half of the movie, but he was also an indifferent and uncaring; the visuals in the first half can be seen through the lens of his psychosis. We don’t see how Platinum falls in love with Catalina but we know how that drives her anger and jealousy; which is how Pulcher responds to rejection. It was love that redeemed him and the second half of the movie was how that happened. Beyond the personal love, the movie explores love through the lens of family and civics to the love of humanity and all beings. As love refines Catalina, he starts to care more about other people. The movie as a whole can be seen through the lens of a fable with magical realism. As a fable, it has a clear moral message. The structure was coherent and clear. For the historical events, the scandal with the Vestal virgin happened with the real Catalina being accused of trying to sleep with one, which was a potential death sentence. The Coliseum scene with the virgin also speaks to love misused, her virginity was being put up for sale. I also think the historical Catalina is split into two characters - the cousins portrayed by Driver, who is the superego, and Labeouf, who is the id. But Driver starts off with his id and superego fighting from the grief of the loss of his wife. Coppola subverted both fables and the ending of the real conspiracy. Rome became a dictatorship. And part of the point of the movie is we can't make it on our own. Love is what brought him out of the madness.

I like Aubrey, but I don’t think this is her kind of project. I’m trying to say she can’t really act, so if you want an 'Aubrey-like' character in your movie hire her, otherwise move on.
If the movie was that bad, and the story made no sense, I'm sure the actors and actresses had a chance to read the script. So in the end, (honest question) what were they thinking and what made them agree to do this project? And would this tarnish their reputation as actors and actresses? It just seems like a art piece more than a movie based on what I'm hearing and the trailer.
He literally should just have remade Metropolis. Yeah, it wouldn't have been as good as the original, and we've had enough remakes lately; but it had the perfect story and plot. The dystopian view of technology and modern life was the most prophetic silent movie ever!
I had high expectations for this movie cuz of Coppola but I was fucking confused and it was such a huge mess of story line. Some don’t even make sense.
This movie was a total mess. It's the perfect example of a director whose full of himself and thinks he can do no wrong. Awful dialogue, a bunch of weird events put together that don't work well together and an overall pretentious storyline that is very simplistic and not nearly as smart as it thinks it is, to name only a few of this movies' many problems. This movie is artsy, fartsy garbage.
@Hexadecimal_QueenofChaos Yeah, no upcoming actor wanted to be the one to jeopardize their career by telling this legendary director that his best days as a filmmaker are behind him.
"I don't know if the movie is spoil-able" that should tell you all...having said that it is a mega movie with incredible cinematography, photography, music, costumes and artistic vision, like a classic movie from the golder era. I am glad I watched at the theater. I also took a couple of naps and don't remember the story (and I wasn't high or drunk). This could have been great but you can tell it came "too late", he is too old and unhinged. He let the story or the idea of this movie roam inside his head for 40 or so years..and made it like a spoiled toddler with no check and balances, no accountability and probably nobody close to tell him things that could have probably save the movie or at least make it less of a catastrophe.
I kinda would have liked it to be a good film. Because, like it or not... Coppola is legendary director. But he doesn't have it anymore i guess. Maybe we'll get a Redux version 30 years from now haha
if it weren't from Hollywood and was before 1991, made in Europe, it might had past as something high-blow and appreciated movie released in art theaters.
This movie is one of the most beautiful messes I've ever sat through. It's disjointed; doesn't feel like it knows what it wants to be; with little plot other than an amalgam of "things happening because reasons and stuff" And every frame of it is utterly gorgeous! Wanted to like it because I have a soft spot for egotistical passion projects, whether they turn out good or not, but this one just didn't work.
This was the best so bad it’s good movie I’ve ever watched. Watched it on a date and we were laughing our asses off the whole time! Highly recommend if you’re into accidental comedy but make sure to watch with other people and maybe a couple drinks.

Guess what it has one it’s not complex people are just stupid and this movie was dumbed down for them and it probably has 40 minutes cut out of it I sure hope it does because I’d have sat for 4 hours watching this epic. I fell in love around the 15 minute mark didn’t know what I was about to see and figured it out right there. I’d have liked the technology to be explained better though
@@lymphomasurvive @ricardocantoral7672 I’m surprised that you took my comment seriously. I agree, this film is nothing like “The Fountainhead” and we never needed said works to begin with 😂😂😂
I feel like this movie was released at the worst possible time. It wouldn't be good no matter what, but the insane amount of golden GCI used for this imaginary world that is supposed to reflect our own is very off-putting. It feels like a social message coming from the ultra rich, who don't suffer any consequences if the empire collapses anyway. It's artificial and tone-deaf. For most people today, reality feels more like Blade Runner, and that's what you need to show if you want them to care about what you have to say. You can't preach from an ivory tower. It could have worked if it had a different message, or if it was released at a time when most people lived in abundence, but I guess we'll never know.
The last good movie Coppola made was Godfather 2 in 1974. That’s a fact. Check it out. Everything after not so good. Oh and if you say Bram Stoker Dracula which Coppola directed is good ? Well Keanu Reeves acting and his hysterical attempt at a British accent is well documented as a disaster.

I just watched it right now, and I honestly liked it personally. I loved the "grandiose" style, and it was captivating for the entire 2 hours. The film's exploration of societal control and the individual's place within it really resonated with me. Just got out of a matinee showing. I feel like I just came down from doing as many substances as Caesar did during this “film”. Truly a batshit crazy experience
Thanks for taking the bullet for us
saw you uploaded this and immediately watched it to enjoy this properly XD
Was he on acid?? This movie is utter crazy and garbage
So are you saying that Batman & Robin movie is not the worst movie anymore! Did this crap take its place? 😂
I like Aubrey, but I don’t think this is her kind of project.
I’m trying to say she can’t really act, so if you want an 'Aubrey-like' character in your movie hire her, otherwise move on.
"Run out of head to scratch." Hahah so true..
just came back from the cinema hoping that they are other like me thinking WTF was that!
I’m sorry but isn’t Caesar Catalina two salad dressings. 😂
🤣🤣🤣
He literally should just have remade Metropolis. Yeah, it wouldn't have been as good as the original, and we've had enough remakes lately; but it had the perfect story and plot. The dystopian view of technology and modern life was the most prophetic silent movie ever!
I just attempted to watch. I fell asleep during it and ended up leaving before the end of it. This movie is horrible.
horrible waste of $ i had to walk out before the end
I had high expectations for this movie cuz of Coppola but I was fucking confused and it was such a huge mess of story line. Some don’t even make sense.
Copolla needs to release the film of the making of this film and just go full Tropic Thunder on it.
This movie is what happens when you ignore 40 years of signs telling you not to make something 🤣🤣🤣
It was good.
if it weren't from Hollywood and was before 1991, made in Europe, it might had past as something high-blow and appreciated movie released in art theaters.
This movie is one of the most beautiful messes I've ever sat through.
It's disjointed; doesn't feel like it knows what it wants to be; with little plot other than an amalgam of "things happening because reasons and stuff"
And every frame of it is utterly gorgeous!
Wanted to like it because I have a soft spot for egotistical passion projects, whether they turn out good or not, but this one just didn't work.
Midolopolis, Megaflopolis, etc. This movie is a hot mess of awfulness.
The only amusing scene and I mean it in terms of being hilariously bad and not just aggravatingly dreadful is the Jon Voight 🏹 scene.
The trailer makes it look as if the interns at Pixar made a movie after the top creatives left for the day.
Megalopolis is giving off Jennifer Lopez : "A love story" vibes.
Wizard of Oz and Great Gatsby. Ok. This reviewer can resume his video gaming now.
yeah im glad i was able to press stop on Vlc 45 minutes in
I felt bad spending an extra $14 - to buy fallout 4 on pc when I already had it on Xbox series X. I can’t imagine spending $120 million on this.
From the clips and reviews it feels like a surrealist comedy more than anything. Unfortunately, I don't think Francis did that intentionally.
This was the best so bad it’s good movie I’ve ever watched.
Watched it on a date and we were laughing our asses off the whole time! Highly recommend if you’re into accidental comedy but make sure to watch with other people and maybe a couple drinks.
One of the greatest movies ever made I’m shocked it was actually good because the previews made it look like a movie without a plot or purpose.
Mega-awfulest?
I could have sworn that they already made an adaptation of Ayn Rand’s “The Fountainhead,” but I guess I was wrong.
They're nothing alike to anyone who understands both works.
You think this has something in common with Rand? 😂
@@lymphomasurvive @ricardocantoral7672 I’m surprised that you took my comment seriously. Not only do I (unfortunately) know about Ayn Rand’s works, but have also found that a lot of white men attempt to create art with the same hyper-masculine and hyper-capitalist spirit of a Rand novel…only to utterly fail in doing so. I agree, this film is nothing like “The Fountainhead” and we never needed said works to begin with 😂😂😂
@@alexandragabitto2573 White men bad, right?

The message was in the last scene the "SPEECH" Everything else is just a distraction.
“It insists upon itself”
Thank you, I'll ship this one
Which is worse: Megalopolis or Joker 2?
The last good movie Coppola made was Godfather 2 in 1974. That’s a fact. Check it out. Everything after not so good. Oh and if you say Bram Stoker Dracula which Coppola directed is good ? Well Keanu Reeves acting and his hysterical attempt at a British accent is well documented as a disaster.
Marcus Licinius Crassus was the very rich down right evil Roman and was instrumental in the destruction of the Republic. I'm quickly moving from curious as heck to I don't know If I want to see this movie EVER. I live in a rural area and I can't travel to a theater... I don't know what to think... is this movie worth the 20 or so dollars to buy the DVD?
I thought the movie was a long exploration of love on every level and from every side, and it is played on top of a retelling and twisting of an actual historical event.
It strikes me as a bad remake of the 1927 classic Metropolis.
Well I mean….at least the trailer looks cools👀
I’ll watch it maybe….when it streams
The funny part is this story would work if it was in jojos bizzare adventure
I think it's funny he made this trash after saying Marvel movies aren't real cinema.
It looks like felllini
scene 1 was when I knew it was going to suck!
Same!
Megalopolis more like Megaflopolis
I watched this movie on a edible I couldn’t stop laughing
Fool. This is why I stopped smoking because it doesn't improve your imagination. You dull your senses, you don't focus.

If I get lucky with a lotto ticket...maybe.😊
Stay tuned...🤔🙃
I want my two hours back! I could have made productive stuff with that time. Instead I spend money whilst also loosing a couple of hours fo my life.
It's a masterpiece.
Lol I kinda liked it. It's not good but it's interesting and I've been thinking about it since. F.F.C. somehow made a Neil breen film.
Well, a city consists of „rooms“ after all
I couldn't tell, but I suspect he made it terrible on purpose as sort of gift to critics everywhere, Because it's IMMENSELY entertaining IF you view it entirely in terms of criticizing it. I was laughing my ass off the entire time. It's like a parody of libertarian propaganda, like it's already savagely making fun of itself on some subconscious level.
I walked out of the theatre after about an hour of run time,.. nauseatingly bad. The editing is jarring, either too early or or lingers way too long… dialogue is horribly written and delivered.
It's clearly meant to be about America on some deep level, but it just comes off as lame.
agreed
I just watched it right now, and I honestly liked it personally. I loved the "grandiose" style, and it was captivating for the entire 2 hours. The film's exploration of societal control and the individual's place within it really resonated with me. It presented a unique visual and linguistic style, and I found the blend of ancient Rome with modern New York fascinating. I agree with you that the storyline wasn't linear and left some questions unanswered, but I'm very far from hating the movie anyways. It was a different (and quite pleasant) cinematographic experience, and I appreciate its attempt to revive the spirit of "Metropolis"
The title is probaby a reference to Metropolis.
I could stream it for free and I still don't want to see it. Waste of 2 hours
you know I honestly don’t know what they hate about this movie is. I thought it was done brilliantly well. Coppola. Did a great job if not a better job than expected.. I don’t know what everyone was talking about when they said there were so many plot lines. I couldn’t follow it. There was one literally direct narrative and if you couldn’t figure it out then it’s no wonder you like the movie unless if it was for to dream like imagery and peculiar Colosseum scene. Give us a really good glimpse of what’s going on in today’s world of both politically, socially, and culturally. I’m definitely going to go see it again
It's such a simple narrative that has many layers. I don't get anyone that didn't get it.
@@lymphomasurvive seriously though like I told my mom, it’s about the fall Rome and what could possibly happen to the future of the world. You’d probably see it as a mess but it’s like fear and loathing in Las Vegas lol

So Birdememic is better? Noice.
It's definitely more enjoyable for sure.
I saw it. It was awesome! Apparently for some reviewers a movie that requires one to actually think about big subjects and ideas is too difficult. And as a result they condemn that which they don't understand.
Another hipster trying to be "deep" 🙄
So, this is a musical?
I knew! this movie was gonna be crap. everyone was all hard cuz Francis C made it, but wen I seen the trailer I knew from that it was gonna be shitty. waste of money. nobody had any idea wut the movie had in store for us plot wise. no catchy trailers. nothing else intising about it to get us in the theater other than just knowing there was good actors in it.... kinda. Can Aubrey plaza not exist again?
I don’t understand why so many reviewers are trashing this remarkable movie. See it for yourself and make up your own mind.
😢Most people - including filmmakers - are not educated to watch arthouse films. You need to watch some Tarkovsky, Fellini, Wajda, Godard, Antonioni and Fassbinder to get a feeling for films that are not built around conventional narrative structures and genre tropes. You can't be a life-long Taylor Swift fan and go to a Jazz gig and expect to comprehend the musical values on display. It's a totally different universe that requires a pre-existing knowledge base.
I don't see your comparison movies had anything to do with this old holly wood Catholic man's mind prison he directed onto the world.
I would have compared it to _Cats_ (without the digital anuses) and a minor peek into the evil of our oligarchs and their minions in _Eyes Wide Shut,_ after a NXIVM "party."
But our analogies are limited to our experience after all... Fiction, btw, is limited to human imagination, _reality is not._
You didn't get it.

My comment was mostly tongue in cheek, because whatever tf that movie was, I'd have rather watched him film himself masturbate in a mirror... and I promise you I don't want to see that either.
I would have been interested in seeing the the female _Cat's_ anuses, because as a former CGI/VFX guy, I was curious how close they got... I would have laughed out loud seeing the pretty Jellicle lead cat show her butthole. Cause those cats look suspiciously like humans... and I wanted to see how they justified that display too.
One of the best movies I ever saw. Critics have a hive mind just like all journalists these days concerning independent endeavors. This AI review is part the swarm of evil. @@JamesF-v4x Have you seen the movie? I did. It has nothing to do with character development. Because there are no characters. Everyone here represents the idea and "acts" like idea. In a place that couldn't be real.
That's why there is no story, and there could not be story.
Try to look on the film from this prospective. You still could not like it, it's ok, but you'll just understand. I like it because author's ideas about the future are very close to mine. It was like to meet a soul mate.
@@alterdron you’re quite pretentious. Coppola isn’t your soul mate and your need to feel special doesn’t make the film some cinematic masterpiece. If the film doesn’t connect with its audience then it’s the fault of the director. Stop sniffing your own farts, or his either.
