Absolutely amazing Rich you diagnosed that problem through deduction of the alternator, charging or not charging. And finally figure out the PCM was bad. You ARE THE MAN
I personally love working on all makes and models. Yeah it can be frustrating going from one manufacturer to another but to me is so much more rewarding after diag/repair. I'm enjoying the private shop content you're putting out. And I agree with the move of out with the old and in with the new employee on Monday. Hope he works out for the shop.
Wishing you a wonderful and happy weekend with your family, get rest it sounds like you have had more than a rough day your whole week was a hard week,so my brother and my friend please chill for the whole weekend and rest ,Monday will be here too soon.autobodymanbob from Alabama..
This happened to me, ran an aftermarket regulator for a few months until I was able to get a good # for a pcm and reprogram. Pain in the ass, alternator caught fire and fried internal regulator in the pcm, alternator will charge, pcm does not recognize it. By pass kit is available for these pieces of shits, that’s how you know it’s common.
Rich, that was one hell of a good diag. Shows the major difference between a professional or a backyard mechanic, because you found the root cause instead of "Oh, bad alternator." Well done, bud. Good luck with your new guy. Once again, you show your smarts, it's not how much a new guy knows, it's how much he's willing to learn that makes a difference in good employees.
I lent my WK2 to a friend (at the time) because needed to move their mom with a utility trailer. Got it back…alternator torched, fuses torched, battery torched, Voltage regulator (inside PCM torched). Replaced alternator and battery, no charge…Since Mopar likes to use PCM as voltage regulator it would’ve been an expensive repair. Got an external voltage regulator from a pickup alternator and wired around PCM…worked perfect and has for the last 4 years!
Hello Rich: When I had my 2 shops I saw this no charge , shorted alternators, a lot of times & yes I think they call it a tippim I call it crap. Hope you can find another cause for a long time they were unavailable at any price. Hope you enjoy your weekend sir, TMP from N.J.
Just did one. Preprogrammed PCM. Customer sold the car to a guy, guy wired the radio wrong, popped the pcm fuse, threw in a higher one and fried it. Same style PCM. Edit: the preprogrammed pcm worked great
Good Diagnosis. This is Valuable Information for us that have never worked on these and just in General. Man the Knowledge you provide is invaluable, Rich. Be Blessed
Employees are the worst. When i was able to hire back in 2004 i wanted to be that "good boss" paid 15 per hr. I own a window cleaning company. 15 bucks per hr to clean windows in 04 was amazing starting salary. After 3 months got shit work and complaints. Hired hard, managed easy. Didn't matter. After that 1st year, everyone hired started at minimum wage. Got the same performance. Just amazing. Thanks for the video I'm diagnosing this issue now in my jeep. Man i hope it's not the pcm. 700 bucks on the low end.
The LH does the same thing if alternator goes or 2 wire lead from PCM shorts together it can easily take out a PCM included. Thanks a lot for the video.
After the 2010 model year the Grand Cherokee really went downhill in terms of build quality and reliability. I had a 2010 Grand Cherokee which was still when Jeep was under the DaimlerChrysler ownership and many of the parts including the transmission was shared with Mercedes. I finally sold it last year with 77,000 miles and never did a single thing to it besides regular maintenance.
I'm having this similar issue here. I'm being told the PCM went out and now they need to do the starter. This is the 2nd video I've come across where the alternator was also an issue w/PCM. I'm already so deep into this vehicle I hope this fixes my problems.
Employees that don't want to clock in and work/learn -you need to let them go because it will only get worse. In another year 2x-3x worse than the year before and then the whole shop starts to drag. =You did the right thing. Let the employee go and change oil/filters at the dealership for a few years, move up to tires, brakes, exhaust etc. Maybe he will get better and more serious as a Mechanic.
That system is like the junk in my 02" Liberty, the regulator is in the PCM, and they are very hard to get alternators that work properly with them, went through around 5? Good job.
And that is why I preferred independent shops.... I was hoping you would take this job just because of the challenges that might present themselves. I have seen that with Chrysler products. I've seen too many issues with their tipm. I do like the different plug in circuit boards and things that offer work arounds. I have also had issues with alternators failing just enough to provide a paracitic draw that can be a giant pain to diagnose.
You have some nice diagnostic skills. Your now former employee won't like the dealer any better. If he fails to show up on time, they'll ride him with diisciplinary paperwork until they boot him in 2-3 weeks. I'd almost bet he'll be back hoping to talk his way back in, yet your new guy should be solid replacement :)
I think I’m having the same problem every couple of days my battery is drained & needs to be charged, but every time I charge the battery it starts so I don’t think my alternator is bad
Dude I got a 12 Cherokee I got the "pentastar tik" I missed the recall I don't know what to do. ... I need a local guy. I can't do that rocker myself even if I can slide it in there... I'm not confident enough yet to open iit up. 🤦
I would guess that aftermarket warranties are rarely worth the $$. Some cost $1000’s and only good if you constantly replace all fluids costing you a ton of $$ over the warranty period 😮. I prefer pay as you go 😊
They had recall on this year for alternator. Mine went out before I got it to dealer for recall. Yup frying computer and battery. FCA payed for all of it . Don’t know about this vin Jeep
Mine was…I wired in an external voltage regulator from a non Mopar around the PCM and it worked perfect. I’ve seen in the comments that they make an actual bypass kit as well.
What’s the best engine cleaner MMO or Seafoam? I have used seafoam 150miles before an oil change but don’t know if it helps anything and plan on running MMO for 3k OCI for a lifter tick soon.
Just seen your video and now it's got me thinking the PCM is fried on my 11 jeep, it started with the alternator shorteing out bad the other day, the thing was hotter than hell and was smoking like crazy well put in the new alternator today and now all she does is crank but will not pop off. Checked fuses and relays but haven't found a bad one yet. You think this is probably the case on mine?
Bro tell Em customer complain. Vehicle No start 1.0. No alternator output 1.0 testing found no pcm out put for alternator. And tell what you did in the video dude. Your smart doggy tell Em. My previous service writers would except the no answer don’t take that bro at all.

Great video as always Rich! Never ceases to amaze me the amount of technology is in modern vehicles these days regardless of make and model.
I am glad as all get out as a youtube viewer.

Good to see the update on this one, I coulda bet that PCM was gonna be fried lol, dime a dozen on these models
Amazing diagnostics on the Jeep, Rich.

Has it happen to my WK2…wired a voltage regulator from a pickup truck’s alternator around the PCM and has worked perfect the last 4 years.

Ain’t nothing without a challenge.
Some people haven’t figured that out yet.
Had the same thing in the past on a customers vehicle. Alternator shorted and fried the pcm. Had no duty cycle command from the pcm.
That system is like the junk in my 02" Liberty, the regulator is in the PCM, and they are very hard to get alternators that work properly with them, went through around 5? Good job.
FCA products, designed to be unfixable…but people dig them like crazy
And that is why I preferred independent shops.... I was hoping you would take this job just because of the challenges that might present themselves.

Awesome work! Was searching for the follow up video but can’t find it. Do you have a link or was the job a wash?
shoot ill come work for ya
Hi Rich Is this car equipped with a car battery monitoring (BMS) ?
I don't think so
also, i doubt a dealership will put up with tardy techs. We all have our problems, but people need to get their shit together.
I would guess that aftermarket warranties are rarely worth the $$. Some cost $1000’s and only good if you constantly replace all fluids costing you a ton of $$ over the warranty period 😮. I prefer pay as you go 😊
Most of the ones that I've used so far every single one of them have paid
Hey I have a question about my 2014 overland can you help me out
They had recall on this year for alternator. Mine went out before I got it to dealer for recall. Yup frying computer and battery. FCA payed for all of it . Don’t know about this vin Jeep
WHats good. Did you get the PCM replaced on that Jeep? If so, what was the outcome of that? I have the same situation and need help.
Yeah I have other videos talking about the finished product I ordered the PCM from Ares 1- 844 - 843 - 4254
What other videos? I was looking for the final result. Thanks for the number. I'll reach out to them today

Sounds like an older chevy wiring
Hey Rich, I know this is off subject of your video but I was looking at redline oil and they’re still a GF5 wonder why? Thanks!
So did you ever get it figured out what the issue was cause mines doing the same starts but battery dies was it the pcm or fuses
So was the alternator the original culprit that fried the pcm? Im going through hell with mine
Mine was…I wired in an external voltage regulator from a non Mopar around the PCM and it worked perfect. I’ve seen in the comments that they make an actual bypass kit as well.
This is why i only buy extended warranties through the dealership. They tend to be less combative in my experience when it comes time to pay up
What’s the best engine cleaner MMO or Seafoam? I have used seafoam 150miles before an oil change but don’t know if it helps anything and plan on running MMO for 3k OCI for a lifter tick soon.
For slow cleaning I like Marvel Mystery Oil for fast cleaning like right now cleaning a lot bg epr

Probably
@@FordBossMe kinda my thoughts, appreciate the response
Is it cheaper to buy a pcm online then have the dealership get if so where can I buy one at
Do you expect the other guy to come crawling back looking for his old job back
Prob
People who are on budget should never buy Volkswagon . Just some good advice.
Bro I hate warranty dude. You gotta hit Em hard real hard dude.

What’s the worst that gonna happen they send an inspector? 🤣
They usually just want the root cause of the issue they give you all the other stuff you want usually depending on there plan.
