Hey there :)) I've done liberty spikes a few times so here's some tips: •use a really strong hairspray. NOT GLUE! And not hair gel or hair wax, it will make your spikes fall down. You will probably need a lot of hairspray. •2 spikes take about 1 hour except if you done this a lot of times. •to make the spike, back comb it , pull it hard and put hairspray JUST ON THE BOTTOM! You want to have a strong base.Blow dry it and and go more up. Don't put a lot of hairspray at the ends, it will make them fall! • You need to make sure that your base is strong and dry. Don't put much hairspray on the other hair. •if it keeps falling, add a little hairspray on the part that bends and blow dry it a lot. •your hands will get sticky from the hairspray. •it won't be that hard at first but dont worry, half an hour after you're done your hair will be like concrete. •its worth it, and you'll have so much fun. Oi! Oi!
My dad told me that he used to wear his hair in a “spiked Mohawk” in the 80’s which I’m assuming was basically this and he’d use egg whites as the glue.
yeah, the guys, who always wanted to be the "truest" of them all, all claim they used gelatin, glue and whatnot. spoiler: the all secretly used hairspray still. just didn't sound as PUNKRAWK.

As a cosmetologist who loves learning the orgins of cool hair styles here's a little history lesson! Liberty spikes were documented back in Ancient times worn by Briton Warriors as a badge of honor. As hairstyles do sometimes the don't catch on for a while! They then made a reoccurrence in the 70s on the British pop punk scene. They were originally worn shorter but by the 80s people were growing them out to crazy lengths like you see now! And as you may have guessed the name is from the statue of liberty!🗽 Hope you enjoyed if you made it this far! ❤️
This from google: “Liberty spikes trace their origins to the Ancient Britons. Warriors washed their long hair in lime water, which also bleached it blond. ... Originally the spikes were small, as worn by modern-day punk fans, but by the 1980s this had evolved to tall liberty spikes, sometimes over a foot in length.”
Mortessa I was gonna say in highschool we had a German foreign exchange student and his friends at home did this and he told us they just used school glue to do it.
YES I just made this comment too. Back in my day punks all used Knox gelatin! Rock solid spikes that won’t bend until you take a shower, even if you don’t shower for two weeks. Hairspray just doesn’t compare.
@@Charginasaur Yaaas, I saw the title and Knox is exactly what came to mind. It took hours to do but it was always so cool to see them all so nicely done.

This is one of those "friend of a friend" stories in my crowd: the legend goes, a metalhead friend of mine went to a concert where there was a dude with these actual 3 foot tall, neon liberty spikes just plain like, glued up. Solid stuff. So this guy was in the mosh pit, headbanging away, when suddenly-- a flailing limb. An ill timed headbang. Impact. And there was this guy with his front liberty spike snapped clean off. Right down near the roots. And this guy stands there and cradles his fallen comrade. And the mosh all around his vicinity just stops. Punks standing still in horror and grief, paying their respects to this tragic casualty.
Dude might be one of those stories that just circulates around the scene. LoL Literally heard the same story when I was in high school in the Philly punk scene.

I have a deathhawk and I am so glad that I don't need any heat to style it. Just a ton of hairspray. That way my hair is still super soft and healthy even after over a year of rocking that style B) And yes. It is indestructable.
The punk scene started late 60's / early 70's as a way to go against the mainstream pop culture and have an alternative life style In the uk a huge focus came from a shop in the kings road called 'sex' where fashion designer Vivienne Westward and Malcom McLaren owned and oparated the shop along side 60's icon Mary Quant, making what is now a very fancy area ( chelsea, London) one of the fashion hubs for alternative and fashion designers Punk is also linked to the rammones, the sex pistols and the movement away from mainstream norms

Brad's next video: "Following a liberty spikes tutorial on my own head!"
I think the cool thing about punk hairstyles is that it’s all usually diy and these ppl cut their hair regularly at home n learn how to do all this stuff themselves , the creativity is endless I feel like if you can achieve hairstyles like this easily then ur set fr

I have a deathhawk and I am so glad that I don't need any heat to style it. Just a ton of hairspray. That way my hair is still super soft and healthy even after over a year of rocking that style B) And yes. It is indestructable.

“I want history and I don’t wanna do the research” boy sameeee
The punk scene started late 60's / early 70's as a way to go against the mainstream pop culture and have an alternative life style
In the uk a huge focus came from a shop in the kings road called 'sex' where fashion designer Vivienne Westward and Malcom McLaren owned and oparated the shop along side 60's icon Mary Quant, making what is now a very fancy area ( chelsea, London) one of the fashion hubs for alternative and fashion designers
Punk is also linked to the rammones, the sex pistols and the movement away from mainstream norms
