it's definitely both, the design is bad BUT the quality of the cgi is BAD too. there are people's feet going into the floor & the floor bending around them?, the head overlay moves weirdly sometimes, there's fur-face-overlays disappearing or a visible gap between the overlay and the actual face, etc etc. if you pay attention more and more flaws become painfully obvious. I agree that the design was the main flaw but the cgi is still embarrasing for a 2019 movie and it's mainly because they rushed this film into theatres when the special effects were nowhere near finished. my main issue was the nose. literally if they slapped on a bit of black eyeliner and make a "cat nose" out of it i would have liked it a little better.
I didnt even dislike the cats design that much (yes, that nose idea would have helped alot) but what botherd me the most was the weird effects they used when jumping (them jumping extremely far) or the way they were tiny in that big world. It just looked really weird to me.
The first thing most people do when they put on a cat costume for Halloween it's draw on their noses and the whiskers. I cannot believe they forgot something so basic like that.
I don’t think she’s there yet. Her designs kind of fall around the same body types, skin tones, and proportions. While I like her work, there is a lot she needs to improve on. Her shading is very heavy, and while better than I can do, it is not at a concept design level. I especially struggle with her body types. The facial features of her work are great. However, she tends to draw very thin characters. I’d like to see characters with different body types. I feel as though Lavender towne struggles with this.
Literally. Like so many mainstream movies with anthros fail because they look creepy and five minutes after a trailer drops I see a furry artist doing a quick sketch and making it look fantastic

Even Avatar made the navi look more cat-like than the CATS movie😂like, navis aren't even supposed to be cats but it still has more cat-like features than the design for the CATS movie
The thing is, their design was intentional. They wanted us to be able to tell that Taylor Swift was Taylor Swift. And that Idris Elba was Idris Elba, etc, etc. They got so many big name actors in there, and they wanted to make sure we knew it. And that's why their faces are too human-like.
@@oh-totoro TBH my approach would have been Alita meets anime catgirl. Use Alita like proportions and animations make them look less human, slap some cat ears on top and give em a floofy collar. I loved all the "cheesy" 80s stuff in that medium because it worked with the theme and coupled with the acting & music, didn't seem "cheesy" anymore once you got immersed into the show. That was great character & costume designing. Plus they had alot wasted talent in this movie adaptation. The movie would have been cool if they kept some things real and still used CG.
@@irishime two things in the play that everyone talked about -- costuming and choreography, two things they wrecked in the film -- costuming and choreography.
I'm not even halfway through and I already like this better. I previously thought Cats should only be interpreted one of two ways, namely either as a Don Bluth-esque 2D animation, or in the form of the original 80's style costumes, but your third answer is a perfect compromise, I'd say.
I realized that there’s one simple thing that they could have done to take the entire cast out of the uncanny valley, and that is to give them cat noses... that’s it. It doesn’t fix everything but it makes them look exponentially better than they do without.
I really hope Cats comes out with a remake in years to come, with longer production time and a better design, hopefully based off of the musical. Even simply re-releasing the original with a different character design would be so much better.

They should have either: 1. Put the actors in costumes similar to those of the stage performance. 2. Make it a 2D animation that was stylistically the same as “The Aristocats” or “Cats Don’t Dance”. The CGI and live action in general was a mistake and I’m getting kinda sick of both tbh.
Imo it could've looked SO good and SO ridiculously adorable if they had just animated cats like in Zootopia, like, just imagine a wittle babeh ballet kitteh but no what we got was a terrifying movie about naked hairy humans lmao
Benedict Cumberbatch played Smaug from The Hobbit. I'm not too knowledgeable about the technical process but I believe they digitally mapped out his face as he acted it so they could use many of his expressions on the dragon itself. I think you did a really good job. Also fun fact that ill forever be salty about but this WAS supposed to be a 2D animated film. Theres concept art floating around. It was gunna be directed by Stephen Speilburg and the artist who designed for Kung Fu Panda did the concept art. I just checked out the concept art, I haven't seen the movie and I refuse to, but the concept art is so appealing to look at. I feel like it's a wasted opportunity, they better recreate and improve it by making the 2d animated version..
I think T.S. Elliot's estate doesn't allow any animated adaptations of his work (he wrote the book that Cats is based on). Apparently this creepy cgi mash-up doesn't technically qualify as an animated movie.

I mean, I remember in July when the trailer dropped, there were many jokes about how awful Cats looked. I would've thought they, Universal, would've gotten the message this movie would need to be fixed.
@@cattjohnson1114 Strawman, do you really think that they- 1. Made two entirely different models for the movie. Movie models are leagues higher quality than game models and take much longer to get just right to emote like a real character would, move properly and realistically without clipping, and look good enough to fit in with the world around them. 2. Took the time to animate two different versions of the movie? Movie trailers aren't released with only those scenes you saw in the movie done, they were already a good portion into the movie before the redesign took place. They had to go back and reanimate all of the scenes with Sonic (since this is a movie about him I don't think I need to express why this would take a long time). We've all seen the infamous "Meow?" scene which not only has a completely different background shot been used for the new trailer but also a different animation for Sonic. Other some other scenes play out similarly with the new model but since they would've had to make a new skeleton for him then they'd have to reanimate those shots as well. 3. Reshoot scenes in the movie to account for the change in design. I previously mentioned the "Meow?" scene already, but other shots also need to be redone to account for Sonic's change in overall appearance and stature. If the cop dude shakes Sonic's hand at some point in the film they would've had to reshoot that scene entirely because Sonic's model is entirely different, his hand is not only in a different place but also larger so they would have to make up for this discrepancy. In the scene with Sonic mentioning he'll have to save the Earth from the first trailer they would've had to reshoot the scene to account for Sonic's overall change in figure so that he's in the scene properly without being awkwardly out of frame.

I like that about it. It make me wonder if they might have tried framing the film as a "show within a movie," by having it start with the performers putting on their masks to attend the Jellicle ball.
They think they know what the public wants. Hollywood is so out of touch with us "little" people. It's like they are on drugs or something to think that Cats was a good idea.
I think they do, but the problem lies with executives and the higher ups. As someone who works at a children's entertainment company, the art team comes up with really unique and creative idea but is shot down by the higher ups because they "don't get it" or "that's not what children" when they personally don't know what children like.
This is so cool! It also would have been way less stress on the VFX department, I presume - giving them only seven months to perfect a completely new technique and apply it to an entire feature-length film is just not a thing that was ever going to end well, but only having to deal with the eyes/ears/maybe tails, plus the occasional non-cat effect that couldn't be done with practical effects, seems a lot more manageable. Just...masquerade cats is such a cool route to take stylistically and I love it.
The movie would've been 100% cuter if they just designed cats on four legs. I'd rather look at cute cats running around and singing. I know they're trying to nod to the musical, but it turned out bad lol
Cat In Shoe the musical wasnt even MEANT to be seen as a horrifying amalgamation of cat and human. they were literally only humanoid bc naturally they had to have human actors. theyre supposed to be cats walking on all fours and singing yet acting a little human whenever they pick things up and dance, of course.
The colour of noses and toe pads/hooves depends on the surrounding fur. I have a black/white cat and a grey/white tiger with bits of brown. Both got pink noses, but my tiger girl got some multi-coloured toe pads. I've seen something similar in pinto horses.

I kind of feel bad for the cgi people who made this because you can see that they do have the skill but they just weren't given enough time to create a consistently good product, let alone a great one.
the design is part of the cgi
Like, did you see that water Bustopher Jones was drinking? The CGI was terrible. The proportions and design are all part of the CGI presentation. Was the CGI the only problem? No. Was the CGI also a major problem. Absolutely.

My opinion:
1. They should've used actual costumes like the musicals; or
2. They should've made it a 3d animated feature film.
Definetely the costumes. Making it fully 3d animated would make the movie lose the most integral part of the show: The dancing.
Idk maybe a 2d film would be cooler. The again I just prefer 2d animation.

How to successfully adapt Cats into a movie:
Step One: don't
Step Two: don't
Step Three: make it a cartoon
Step four: Respect your VFX artists
WRONG WRONG AND WRONG again cause if you were actually knowledgeable about the musical and understood the material it is based upon you would also know that according to A. L. Eliot's widow asking for permission to adapt the material into a musical she asked if they will make them like pussycats and he said no, then she replied " cause Disney had approached him ( T.S Eliot) about it and he refused, he didn't want them made into cartoony pussycats"

Agreed, the noses were awful
Don't forget about the human hands.
olivia scorciolla yes! thats what i’ve been saying!

The problem is whether or not she can keep up with the work strain
Why? she makes her living off her own art, she doesn't need to work for anyone to make money.

It is almost like the people who designed the cats for cats had never actually met a cat
The director held them to unrealistic deadlines. They were given 7 months. Toy Story took 2 years.
Or they took their inspiration from renaissance painters :D Look it up, don't thank me :p
@@oh-totoro TBH my approach would have been Alita meets anime catgirl. Use Alita like proportions and animations make them look less human, slap some cat ears on top and give em a floofy collar.

Spielberg was going to do that in the 1990s but the studio closed and they made the 1998 movie
Apparently, T.S. Elliot's widow didn't allow it back in the day.
because it’s got no plot either? that’d be just as, if not more, boring
I think it’s just because you lose the dancing and the expression in the singing when you just make them cats. The plot is really weak, it’s more of a cabaret with a main goal rather than a story
Because the entire allure of Cats is the live, intricate dancing.
In the musical some of the cats have “clothes” thats somewhat part of their fur (ie rum tum tugger, Munjoriee & Rumpleteazer, Old Duetoronemmy) and others have Coats (Jennydots, Mr.Mistofflees, Grizabella)and stuff But I think you went the next logical step from the musical like if they were to update Cats or go even MORE ballet than it is (the broadway play is less a play and more a ballet) this is probably what it’d look like. I think you did a really good job. Also fun fact that ill forever be salty about but this WAS supposed to be a 2D animated film. Theres concept art floating around. It was gunna be directed by Stephen Speilburg and the artist who designed for Kung Fu Panda did the concept art. It looked BEAUTIFUL honestly very Miht Khal like designs like an old disney movie (think Robin Hood). Im so mad we got this instead.
I just checked out the concept art, I haven't seen the movie and I refuse to, but the concept art is so appealing to look at. I feel like it's a wasted opportunity, they better recreate and improve it by making the 2d animated version..
Damn seems like a big loss. The concept art looks great!
I think T.S. Elliot's estate doesn't allow any animated adaptations of his work (he wrote the book that Cats is based on). Apparently this creepy cgi mash-up doesn't technically qualify as an animated movie.

The new Sonic design actually has a worse CGI (the furs don't look as convincing as the previous one).
But it's the right proportions and the look that makes it better than the previous design.
I didn't even notice when I saw the movie. Good design really is key
@@SuperAllison20 Now it could be possible they improved the CGI in the final version.
However, I cannot confirm this since I haven't seen the movie yet and this comment was based on the early trailers of the improved Sonic design.
And since the designers were on a tight schedule to improve the design, it is quite possible that the CGI became more realistic in the final movie.
It's supposed to look like that because he's an animated game character. Not a real hedgehog. So they have to keep the normal style and a realistic but not so realistic at the same time so he still looks like the animaited sonic we know. Just like the movie pixles, animal game avatars weren't actually fluffy because that's how they were in the video games. And it looks more convincing because you know that's them. Im not a professional cgi/designer but I'm just saying what's on my mind and im pretty confident with it. Please correct me if you can.
In my opinion, I think they did a much better job with the new one. Sure it looks less realistic, but it's not really supposed to. Sonic isn't supposed to be realistic, he's a lot more cartoonish
I mean, they were super pressed for time and also were probably on a lower budget after doing so much of the movie in the original design

@@arctiwolf857 how do you know? Did you work with it?
@@cattjohnson1114 Strawman, do you really think that they-

Irl Weeb , well if that’s the case put in people in cat costumes or anime cat girls
Except for the Shimbleshanks and Mr. Mistofelees parts. Those were pretty charming in my opinion
I would honestly hate if they went the cute route because of the orgy scene and like the themes of decaying, getting old, and wanting to be reborn
Iron Wing Artist Yeah, I can see where you come from. Especially the part where Victoria enters “womanhood”
I literally tell everyone that they either always have clothes or they have no clothes. Don’t compromise!!
Pluto and Goofy are a terrifying example. Why is nobody enraged over this
What if they all have just hats?
I don't like the idea of naked furries because of that
how about fur clothes like fur that resembles an outfit like a tailcoat could be long fur
"I did a really bad thing....im gonna show it to you...now"
UA-cam: *RAIDSHAWDOW LEGENDS-*
Me: AHHHHHHHHHJDIEJEBJDJDBD
The main thing I found creepy was how they didn't have dark noses
The colour of noses and toe pads/hooves depends on the surrounding fur. I have a black/white cat and a grey/white tiger with bits of brown. Both got pink noses, but my tiger girl got some multi-coloured toe pads. I've seen something similar in pinto horses.
Imagine they remake the movie like how you explained it
Me : it was bad... So i remake it but with 2D animation and with good desings
Or
Me : i just filmed the whole play but with better costumes.
I would love that.
the den of the clouds 505 can I help you animaet??
@@isanya1548 yes! I can do the concept art.
the den of the clouds 505 Is okay if it’s an anime style
my recommendations:
the beautiful and talented Lavender Towne fixes a bunch of ugly circles
me wearing $9 air buds "hi everybody its BATTERY LOW " XD there dead now
Fun fact: They actually did consider making the cats movie in 2d, but eventually decided not to. The concept art for the 2d version is still around on the internet.
Pretty sure that studio was from don bluth's; also,he did movies like thumbelina, anastasia, the classics basically, damn cats could've been an animated classic
It is not that they “decided not to do it.” Unfortunately, Don Bluth’s studio closed down while the project was still in the conceptual art stage.
@@mondenkindqueen Oh, my friend told me they "decided not to do it for financial reasons" but that is definitely an understatement then.
Oh yeah, it was Steven Spielberg’s animation studio, but I was correct in that the project was abandoned after the studio closed.
Sorry I got the two studios mixed up.

mondenkindqueen goodness the art looks beautiful. 😍 And I agree w/ the commenter who said that Cats could’ve been an animated classic.
I hope someone picks it up and they manage to make the animated film w/ the art concept. It really does look like those old, classic animated movies you’d watch as a kid.
Thou comment hast been re-written
Wait she has pet *MICE* ?! I freaking love mice! They're so cute 😍
@@47ratsinahoodie She has rats actually. Two if I'm correct
AoTako yes, she has two rats
@@NekoKumeika Rats are cute, too! I don't get the bad rep rats have. They just happened to spread a couple diseases a few times, so what? By that logic people should hate snakes since they're always biting people. Plus, I would kill for the flexibility of a rat.
Hooded Raire Same but my mom won’t let me have one.
Basically if they looked like chat noir it would have been a lot better.
lol problem solved just make multiple cat noirs
Yay! Cat noir fan
YES
