    When I got out of the Army in 1976 I immediately got myself a commercial license and kept it current. In the late 80s I got red up with corporate world so drove petroleum tankers for a couple of years. Never gone overnight, worked 6 days and off 2, the heaviest thing I had to lift was one end of an empty hose, basically I was paid to just drive around and then park and then drive around again, and they were paying me $65K a year, what would be over $100K today. Walmart just ran TV commercials looking for HUNDREDS of drivers, starting pay with full benefits was $90K. Why so many commercial drivers risk being homeless for drugs and/or alcohol fascinates me.

    • @gchsbus
      @gchsbus 4 роки тому

      Easy answer. Because a lot of companies underpay their drivers or find ways to underpay them. New grads may get a sign on bonus as an agreement with an educational program from a private school or community college but they get low pay in the door then the company will do everything in their power to stretch it out. It will find reasons to deny raises due to phony log book discrepancies or disciplinary actions from getting written up for not working over a major holiday. Then you got the experienced drivers who shop around and are company jumpers. Could have millions of miles and and years of experience. These companies want to claim that they have a seniority structure and they would be coming in at the lower part of the seniority so its lower pay and routes no one wants. The company's like Walmart you speak of, they cater to anyone that will help them qualify for Work Opportunity Tax Credit or Any other tax breaks. I know a few middle aged white guys that have had their CDLs for 20 years that applied at Walmart and never got hired, and they had spotless driving histories. yet some guys they knew who were minorities who were on public assistance or were part of some tax break group got hired.
      You can't win in the trucking industry unless you are an owner/operator and pay to play in order to get what you want. I know a few guys that are owner/operators that make great money. But that is because they have accounts they drive for and know the owners of those accounts and slip money their way to get the account. Its a real corrupt system. Its amazing how $15k can get you a real good account all of a sudden. Just saying. Its the cost of doing business these days in trucking.

    My father has a few DUIs but one thing everyone who knows him is that when he goes to work he's sober. He used to drive this same truck and I would ride with him. Best lesson he taught me was don't drive a truck that could kill everyone unless you know for sure your at your best. As for the dui he would go to the bar and drive home in his S10 pick up. He owned up to being drunk and doing wrong. People can respect that.
