You should hear him on a coffee table. I was backstage in Orlando in 2009 standing next to him before a show & Mike was playing on a coffee table warming up . He even made that sound great. But he was surprisingly short person.
Jesus fucking christ can we just enjoy the music? If you don't like Mike Portnoy's playing, then you don't have to listen to it. It's as simple as that. For those criticizing his technique or his "lack of complexity" go listen to Dance of Eternity or Learning to Live or Stream of Consciousness or many others (or just go fucking listen to Dream Theater when he was with them). I personally love his playing and I think it fitted Dream Theater very well and I also think it fits well with the recent artists he played (such as Neal Morse, Flying colors or when he played with Adrenaline Mob). Can't we just love music for what it is? I don't see many people criticizing Ringo Starr for playing pretty basic things or John Bonham, obviously if you get past the historic contributions these drummers gave, but I mean just in terms of technicality... But then again, if you fail to see Portnoy's contribution to music, progressive rock or heavy metal, then just go listen to Dream Theater my friend :) And if you don't see anything there, then rock, metal or prog rock might not be your thing (or you're an idiot).
+SuperXpress2 Completely agree. Can't count the amount of times people on jam vids like this one, no matter the drummer, point out the tiniest mistakes. They can't seem to comprehend that that's part of jamming, trying out new stuff to see what sticks. Sometimes it doesn't fit, but if drummers never experimented we'd never find the stuff that does fit.
How are u gonna know if u don't it if u don't listen to it. "don't like? don't listen" doesn't make sense. Lotta people come see check the hype and are genuinely unimpressed. It's not other ppl's problem whether or not you idolize a poor drummer, so you shouldn't take is so personally when they have different taste.
This sounds like every music store's drum section that I've ever been in. Just a bunch of kids banging like spastics on the kits, only somehow, this guy is held up as a premier drummer. Sure, maybe he can write intricate drum parts in the context of a song, but there is _nothing_ that he does that any drummer with name recognition today cannot do.
consider this, he never had a formal lesson, so he's more talented without lessons than most drummers are with lessons. I do prefer his band oriented drumming, but I enjoy his solos too

For you guys saying Mike is shit. Have you ever tried playing the old dream theatre stuff? His parts musically were incredible. Drum soloing is clearly not his forte though. Still a huge fan of his work with Dream Theatre, A7X, Adrenaline Mob & The Winery Dogs. Great player.
kool - aha, so if you buy new TV and get problem with it, please, dont bring it back to seller and try to complain, before you build your own better device! thank you.
Before this i watched Mancini's solo and it was quite impressive. Man's a beast and he's got his place in DT well deserved. But, i prefer Portnoy's solo because it sounds more appealing to me. If you are saying that any of these drummers have no skill, you should go back to your cave and leave the performers and listeners to enjoy the music. They are both great drummers and have different styles which can't be appealing to everyone. GO MIKE!!!
+Stoby Joe Mobley Without Portnoy, DreamTheater sounds like all the other bands trying to sound like DreamTheater. I've been a fan since Images and Words (bought Day and Dream shortly after), and I can't get past the loss of Portnoy. DreamTheater has joined the same ranks as Queensryche: I loved them, but they are no more.
To anyone who knocks Mike, he has forgot more than you will know. His body of work, not a 7 minute jam speaks for itself. Everyone else no problem that's how I know he is at the top! He is famous because of his drumming you idiots!
The way he wrote his drum tracks with Dream Theater is legendary! But i must say, coming from watching Jojo Mayer play drum solo to this, MP sounded too amateur.

@@dcairol I was 17 years old when I made that comment dude. My opinions on life and everything have changed since then. Portnoy is no doubt an awesome drummer. Great footwork. And this video is clearly not a serious drum solo, and is him just fooling around testing out the kit. And the drums aren't even mic'ed up so they don't sound very good. So I don't understand people bitching about the sound. However I still don't like Dream Theater very much. Especially now with the lineup changes. Sons of Apollo is where it's at. Check them out. Awesome band. Cheers.
He's good and there's no debating that issue. But flash is flash and speed is speed. He does stuff that I will never be able to do and I've been playing drums for a little over 40 years now.But I came up listening to the likes of Charlie Watts, Ringo Starr,Keith Moon,Ted Blueschell,Nigel Olsson,Peter Criss,Eric Carr,Bun E.Carlos,to name a few.The solid core of a good band is the drummer. To maintain a constant tempo with variation,is highly important to the foundation of a drummer and a band.Charlie Watts has to be one the most simplest drummer there is,but yet he is as solid as a rock in his playing and timing.Flash and speed are great and I am not taking away a thing from it.It has it's place.Portnoy and even Neal Peart, are two of most talented drummers on the planet today.Bozzio is in a different league than all drummers. But even with Portnoy's speed and flash,he maintains a constant tempo and keeps his playing solid. Peart is the same way,but with not as much flash. I guess what I am saying is this:Portnoy is a fantastic drummer. I am amazed every time I watch him.But take a good long lok back at some older drummers from times past and present and you will see that sometimes simplicity in itself, is all the flash and speed you need. Rock on you fellow drummers!
Luthfi Kautsar LMAO, drums are not supposed to be melodic ;) , ofcourse you can create some melodic sound in it. but its not like a keyboard so its probably monotone xD
Because dance of eternity was recorded with many takes. Plus he compose and wrote down each sections time signature before. This take is just on the spot improvisation.
I agree. What happened to Mike? He used to be so incredibly creative. I still watch his 'drums of thought' dvd and get blown away by the stuff he came up with and the incredible beats and transitions but now? What ever happened? I suppose just like DT are kind of boring now, they all need each other. Then they really come alive.
the people on here that say Mike Portnoy sucks must have really never looked at more than anything than what he has on youtube. Yes this video is horrible and the drums sound like shit, but for me, what makes Mike Portnoy such a great player is how his playing interacts with the music, and how musical everything is. He never overplays, and for the people that say he plays the same stuff over and over again, while there is some truth, you probably are not drummers and are not able to hear the subtleties in his playing and how musical they are. But you are right, in THIS video that is all he is doing. Another comment I keep seeing here is how over all the years he has been around he never changed his playing. Listen the the self titled Winery Dogs, and Flying Colors albums and get back to me. He plays on those records like he never had with DT. And when I say listen, I mean actually listen to every single note he plays, not the big double bass fills he does before the chorus.
I love the sound of that kit. Does anybody else find it weird when you see a bit and think "wow, I can actually play that bit!". Not that there's many bits where that is the case for me :)
It's very funny how he's suddenly "how much of a bad drummer or just an basic drummer he is" but if some other non famous person did this exact thing they would be receiving a lot of positive comments and things like that
+Felix “Toffy” C Have you never seen him live or heard a DreamTheater recording. Testing is testing. Playing is playing. Modern Drummer Magazine would highly contest your assessment of Mike Portnoy. They've given him their highest award SEVEN times. More than any other drummer. ANY. EVER.
Summary of the logic of most of the comments on this video: Mike Portnoy is a horrible drummer who can't solo and never does anything interesting because guys like Dave Weckl are better than him in terms of technicality and dynamics... Wow... If you think that Mike Portnoy's terrible only "good" because he's not as good as guys like Weckl, Mangini, or Lang... You gotta loosen up on what counts as "great drumming" to you. There cannot be only around a dozen guys that count as great drummers. That's completely ridiculous to think. I understand that you think that he isn't rudimentary and that only has one dynamic: LOUD. I understand where you're coming from. But criticizing one drummer because they're not as great as a handful of the best drummers in the world is just absolutely ridiculous.
This must one of the most best drummers commenting here in this post since they all think they are better than Portnoy...oh wait, theyre not. Always fun to listen to Portnoy - really liked the fiddling with the cowbell.
He is just going in circles doing double kick 4 singles fill then this hi hat snare paradidl rythm over and over for 7 minutes I think he should be embarassed for this poor performance,he would better stop doing this kind of solos to preserve his reputation .when he plays along with music or a band he makes sense especialy with DT but for a pure drum solo its so poor I know some averrage drummers who play in pubs and in thier grages they have better chops and some tasty licks and grooves.
well fuck me i guess portnoy is my main inspiration. I made a video way back, most of my views and it died like a mother fucker. Setup like lars but like i said, fuck me, half the shit in this is my inspiration apparently hahahahaha. Obviously never seen this before my video was posted, since its older.
Mike has got to be one of the goofiest drummers of all time. He's way more coordinated then I will every be but this is just silly. (and those acrylic drums sound horrible)
Improv soloing without a framework always exposes where you're at on any given day; in a general sense, good days and bad. Fortunately, it's not why we're hired as drummers!
It's alright but not as good as the Hello Kitty kit
There's nothing in this world that could be better or even close to Hello Kitty labeled anything, so your comment is pretty obvious.

But the I’ll look through UA-cam and find an eight year old do the same thing....
GENIOS COMO PORTNOY SON POCOS ..... EL MARCO UNA DIFERENCIA ENTRE LOS BATRERISTAS!!!!!!!......DISCULPENMEN SI ME EQUIVOCO ...PERO PARA MI EL ES LA VERSION EVOLUCIONADA DE ...¡NEIL PEART!!!!!( OJO!.NO ESTOY DICIENDO QUE MIKE ES MEJOR)!!!
You guys are gay as fuck. The music he created with DT is phenomenal... Solos don't make someone suck
I love Portnoy's work in DT, but this solo was hella boring!
Damn good
And I’m glad he didn’t edit the mistake Out where he clipped his stick on a rim
Cool
Tito Puentnoy
Mike Taconoy
For you guys saying Mike is shit. Have you ever tried playing the old dream theatre stuff? His parts musically were incredible. Drum soloing is clearly not his forte though. Still a huge fan of his work with Dream Theatre, A7X, Adrenaline Mob & The Winery Dogs. Great player.
that kit must be a nightmare to setup
A nightmare that he'll remember
Awesome testing! Give it up for LP drums! I was impressed!
where are the videos from all the haters. i'd love to see them do better. oh wait...
Exactly
kool - aha, so if you buy new TV and get problem with it, please, dont bring it back to seller and try to complain, before you build your own better device! thank you.
To be honest, He doesn´t know how to play "timbales"
The first 2 minutes of solo reminded me of Chad SMith :D
come on guys!! this is a total improvisation!!! fucking good
Before this i watched Mancini's solo and it was quite impressive.
GO MIKE!!!
i love you man! no mike portnoy no dream theater! mike mangini is a robot!
Ra Sa I tend to agree. Mangini has technique out the wazoo, but Portnoy plays with way more heart.
Nightwish and Drowning Pool aswell are bands that were something else before... :(
Just TESTING,NOT a solo!! MIKE PORTNOY is a GREAT DRUMMER!!!!
fuck I dropped my jaw on the floor
Erik Arnald me too still havnt found it
Robert Miller
In my opinion, one of the most important things in drumming is DYNAMICS. I ask: where is it in this "solo"?
You’re absolutely right.
When Mike is soloing... intro: RLRLLRLRLLRLRLLRLRLLRLRLL END: RLRLKK RLRLKK RLRLKK RLRLKK... Now i know why he was desmissed from dream theater
he wasn't kicked out. They wanted him to stay. He left because he wanted to take a break and they didn't.
I know man, im just kiddin... but it's not good when he always use the same techniques .. thats boring
As he's said himself, he's a not a solo drummer
he left the band not dismissed
Manoj Bairwa He,s just say it humorous
To anyone who knocks Mike, he has forgot more than you will know. His body of work, not a 7 minute jam speaks for itself. He is a top 10 drummer of all time, if he is so bad why have so many drummers emulated him. Their are 2 drummers that I have had trouble learning some of their grooves Mike is one. Everyone else no problem that's how I know he is at the top! He is famous because of his drumming you idiots!
Leaving dream theater was probably his most regretted decision ever
Marco minnemann is the best, this compared to minnemann is nothing...
The way he wrote his drum tracks with Dream Theater is legendary! But i must say, coming from watching Jojo Mayer play drum solo to this, MP sounded too amateur.
Or coming from watching Benny Greb!!! Daaamn!
Those drummers are amazing !
What I love about Benny is that he's only 30 yo!
Or Gavin Harrison, or Virgil Donati. Or Guitar Center Drum Off contest.
crap???? REALLY.. wow.. you need to get a clue Luthfi
this is so far from crap.. this is a genius just being a genius and enjoying it with out being held back..
this is actually boring...
The guy has talent,should o far,jolly nice playing👍
This guy is the most overated drummer ever. And my music teacher said he was the "best".
This is definitely a bad example of his skills. Check out his work with Dream Theater.
Cheers.
Wow... those sound absolutely horrible.
5:00 - 5:28 -> one of his WORST moments EVER
HAHAHAH AGREE
what is so bad in that part?
it's one of those Saturday afternoon in the Guitar Center drum department solos. Shut up kid, and get off the drums!
***** if there is a kid that can play dat , i mean he reached a Mike's level. Its not that easy ya know
@@ghostssmokesdjgames2261 you’re probably asking that if you are not a drummer.
You want latin, ? ...Try benny greb...Bleedin BEAST!
o melhor de todos os tempos sem dúvida alguma
Nah
Mano a musicalidade dele é espetacular, o jeito que ele distribui as notas combinam muito bem.
*stares at iPad in a dumbfounded state of confusion as to why there are 450 down votes on this video*
Мне вот звук не нравится(
Потому что кухня не подзвучина ...
Запись идет комнатного звука
have to say this is pretty amateur stuff, his recording work is phenomenal though, solo's not so much
yea this one sucks, terrible transitions
one of the best drummers of today, who can play all styles, at least that's my opinion
terrible sound....
sounds like there was only overheads which explains the sound. if this kit was in a studio fully mic'd up, it would kick so much ass
+Steven Chen the kit isn't properly miced
agree
His drums always sound like shit. It's his technique, approach, and equipment choices.
It's the mics, you people don't understand recording.
Rock on you fellow drummers!
monoton crap
Luthfi Kautsar but his creation of rhythm section and the concept is great than what Mangini have ever did.
Luthfi Kautsar Please upload your own video then and let us comment.
Luthfi Kautsar LMAO, drums are not supposed to be melodic ;) , ofcourse you can create some melodic sound in it. but its not like a keyboard so its probably monotone xD
Luthfi Kautsar Wait... What's a Monoton?
Luthfi Kautsar your so fucking right. all i hear is a lot of brrrrr brrrr dummdumdumm brrrr brrrr... fucking monotone as hell!!
He is gooooooooood
How can this drummer who shared his rhythmic ingenuity on Dance of Eternity - play such a poor solo.
Julia Francis but he's a great composer.
Julia Francis this is testing not soloing
+Bobby Whiles Just because someone can't do something it means he/she can't express an opinion on it?
+Julia Francis alright? well.. upload a video where you do better then ? i bet you dont even know how to work your hands and feet at the same time..
Because dance of eternity was recorded with many takes. Plus he compose and wrote down each sections time signature before. This take is just on the spot improvisation.
I saw this dude name dropped a few times, so i decide to click a youtube thumbnail on the right over there.
Welp, I'll be leaving now.
+Db X You really should check out some of his actual WORK, and not judge his ability by a drum DEMO.
Meh
i argree like lars this guy is getting shitter with age
I agree. What happened to Mike? He used to be so incredibly creative. I still watch his 'drums of thought' dvd and get blown away by the stuff he came up with and the incredible beats and transitions but now? What ever happened? I suppose just like DT are kind of boring now, they all need each other. Then they really come alive.
drummerdude Midlife crisis...
Same shit, over and over.
the people on here that say Mike Portnoy sucks must have really never looked at more than anything than what he has on youtube.
This drum solo is not impressive at all. It doesn’t make justice to his recordings from the 90s/2000s. He’s not good soloing.
And then he had his hair cut and started playing Toxicity.
So many people come to talk shit it's annoying go watch some thing else
Haters gone hate but hes mike portnoy and your....?
It's hard to tell what song it is but I think it might be dance of the eternity
3 tings bad with this.
1. latino.
2. toy drums
3. spanish
TINGS
You've outdone yourself, kid.
Mike has got to be one of the goofiest drummers of all time. He's way more coordinated then I will every be but this is just silly. (and those acrylic drums sound horrible)
Holy moly....
{yawn}... oh sorry! was that a drum solo?
Also chill with the hateful comments... He's not the best soloist in the world but as far as I know he never claimed to be. And none of us are either.
Improv soloing without a framework always exposes where you're at on any given day; in a general sense, good days and bad. Fortunately, it's not why we're hired as drummers!
this a latin vibe...it is made just for the channel. It is not a skills demontration, it is MUSIC!
Hey great playing smooth style top drummer Mike you rocked that kit
¡adrenalina pura!!!!!!
