The thing that makes Mike so great is not just the speed with which he plays but the power and fluidity. It differentiates him from some of the speed demons out there that can play faster, but with not as much "attack" on the drum head. Oh and if you are even vaguely paying attention there are plenty of examples of double and triple strokes that he is doing throughout the entire video.
Yet another example of when the drums sound good and more importantly when someone knows how to play, mics aren’t an end all be all to a quality product.
No complaints here. This is crazy awesome. Mike kicked ass for ya' wow. Wish I was there in the room to hear it and feel it. Thanks for making and posting the video and thank you Mike for blowing my mind with your grooves, chops and shredding.

I think that the solo is very good, Mike has been a long time inspiration. The key factor here is the sound which is a matter of taste. Note that there are no mics around, which probably means we are listening to what the camera recorded, without much/any sound processing. If this clip had audio quality to match the video, I guess there would be much less dislikes. Anyhow, it's not the drummer's fault that audio is natural and unprocessed.
You gotta love when musicians are so good that they make it look easy, until you try it. LP makes some of the greatest accessories for drummers and the best ice bells....Awesome video, Thanks!
I feel that as Portnoy evolves as a player, so do his solos. With Dream Theater, he was more precise and more creative with his solos. Seeing that this was done around the time he was in Adrenaline Mob, it's understandable that this one was more straightforward. Don't get me wrong, I still enjoyed it very much, and I love Adrenaline Mob. But with The Winery Dogs, Transatlantic, and all these "proggier" bands he's in now, his solos have been displaying that precision and creativity again.
I wonder if the others from DT (not including Mangini and LeBrie) just look at this like an ex-bird. And think "Oh, yeah". "Why, oh why did I ever leave her?" He's world class and always was and everything he touches these days, it seems, turns to gold. I've got to say he's by far my favourite musician on the planet and not just because he plays the music I love but his attitude and what he's been through in life resonates with me. Never stop Mike.
Mere words will ultimately fail to give due credit for the superior skills that Mike Portnoy has, and continues to display. A one of a kind drumming expert, at least!

This may have been an off day for him and he still kicked it in the ass. This guy is a beast with a band or by himself. Only reason people are criticizing is because jealousy is blinding them.
Nick Nolte nah definitely no jealousy towards Mike portnoy. Hes a great drummer. Would I put him in with legendary great drummers ..... No. In dream theatre he (and the rest of the band when he was in the band) accomplished one thing.....proving that they're terrible song writers that let their conflicting egos get in the way of writing good songs...aka they're a bunch of look what I can do musicians and they formed the ultimate look what we can do band. There is a reason that since Mike left the band he hasn't been able to find another steady job and that's because of his ego and the way they ran things together while in dream theatre. Sorry Mike (and Mike fans that are gonna rip me for this) but you're a has been.....or since dream theatre never really was that huge in the first place maybe you're a never was....I'm not sure. One of the two though
Just because your professional doesn't mean you have to be good....just need a good backround of the band or bands you have played with ...and baam your sponsored ...
Nick Nolte even if he is a professional, this doesn't change the fact that this was probably the worst drum performance he's done. You're literally telling people that they're wrong for making the critic that you just made.
Nick Nolte - You know what the problem is; People are trying to find grid-tight perfection nowadays, with time corrected recordings and computerized everything. - All there was "off" about this is that it was off-the-cuff. Any inconsistencies in tempo or any hits of the rim or whatever, do not matter because it's improvised. And whenever there's any "error" it puts the OCD-soaked viewers these days totally off because it's not perfect. - But this is nothing but natural and a raw and honest performance. - The same principles count for any performance or craft these days, with drums, guitars, vocals, acting, photographing, drawing, editing, etc. - I see this nitpicking and whining everywhere because people are obsessed with technical perfectionism rather than to enjoy what is being created in front of their faces. - And I'm not blind to quality and such things, I'm actually very critical myself, but... I've also learned to just take a step back and not sit there like a judge but just an audience. - People are un-learning to just be an audience-member, and it's just full of over-analyzing nerds everywhere now. Myself included...
Nick Nolte I certainly agree that all this bashing against MP isn’t necessary, but using the ‘but can you do better’ argument just doesn’t really work. For example a person who couldnt cook could go to a restaurant and have really shit food, just cause he can’t cook doesn’t automatically make his judgement of the food being shit any less valid. Nothing against you, just trying to help inform you :D
This smells so much of Alex Gonzalez, it actually looks like they told him “hey Mike this is Latin so we’ll show you an example of a Latin sound and you try to create from there” there are many parts sounding similar. So good

Freestyle is a different animal than composition. You can't argue he's a good drummer. No, he's not the best. But does a person need to be the best in order to have fun and be successful? Liked? He's making a living at doing what he loves. There it is.
Some of this really reminds me of the guys in Godsmack (back like 10 years ago anyway). Shows how much Portnoy was probably also an inspiration to them.
Guido Cioni But in all seriousness, they probably did use mics. From the looks of the room he was in, the room probably had some amazing acoustics. Also, at some points of the video, you can see some black stands off of the side of the drums which probably held some mics above the set.
Are those drum shells made of acrylic? That was an impressive solo, not to mention what an amazing array of cymbals in that kit. He must have every kind of crash, ride, splash and china cymbal that Sabian makes in his kit, or so it seems. The only kit I've seen more awesome that is Terry Bozzio's, and that kit is a frigging monster!

I remember when I had only been playing drums for a few years and would have thought this was ultimate drumming too haha. Mike is good , could even be considered great , but he doesn't drum outside of rock grooves (from videos I've seen) and for me that is why he is equal a high schooler . I'm not trying to take away from his rudiments or technique or how 'clean' he sounds but the grooves he uses them with is boring
There is one thing everyone needs to understand. There is no drummer or musician in this world that is truly 'better" than the other hen it comes to ones with the skill level of Portnoy and such. They all have their own unique style of playing, some are very skilled at certain styles, rhythm, combos, etc. And for some general information, Portnoy and Dream Theater have been around for over 25 years. For him to take a page from anyone would be absurd, he has earned his title as a legend and shall be remembered for a long time to come.
close your eyes and you picture yourself trying to test out the feel of a pair of drumsticks at guitar center, but some fuck found the double pedal on one of the demo sets and won't leave until you recognize his "stellar" playing
+mtndewman1022 yeah, portnoy can't play shit. it sounds like the typical high school drummer playing his new double pedals that he got for christmas and just figured out the "R L R K K" fill.
He is a band-drummer, not a solo-artist.. his strengh is not to play insane soli, but play insanely good with other musicans and he also got great ideas for songs
I don't think I would've ever had that thought if it it weren't for this particular performance and you mentioning it first. But now that you do, dude that would be a match made in heaven. I'm rewatching this while adding Les and Ler in my head and it sounds so right.
I do have to give this guy credit. Even though he is kind of an overrated drummer, his drummer overall does deserve praise and here's why: If you ask any professional drummer, they will say playing fast, loud and technical will NEVER get you the gig (and that is SO true) and if you look at Mike here, he knows how to stay in the pocket and he knows how to play dynamically and he doesn't rely on playing fast and showy to save his life. In the metal drumming community, it really hard find drummers that can play their shit dynamically and quietly as well as super musically. I myself have fallen victim to playing fast and showy all the time throughout my drumming life and I can play more techniques than Mike can like rudiments and double bass and other flashy shit. Basically what I am trying to say is that people should stop making this guy look like a piece of shit for being so overrated because it is really f'n hard to find drummers like Mike here who just play in the pocket and play musically and dynamically and people should understand why he is overrated in the first place, because he gets a shit ton of gigs with great musicians because he follows the advice of professional drummers (like himself) and that is to lay down a sick groove and don't play circus act crap.
Inspiring playing!!! A living legend!!! I only wish he could be as good as those titans trolling here on his playing. Seriously guys get a life, go practice, make a contribution stop farting from the mouth, or go to a shrink or something
eventhough Mangini is better than him, at least Portnoy's got a character in his technique so he won't be forgotten. That's the important point in life.Tratatata tratata desssss

I forgot I had it on 1.5x speed and was like wtf when did he get THAT fast??!??!
mike portnoy and dave lombardo make me want to become a drummer!!!
How about Mike Magini
He makes it look so easy D:
+Max DC oh yeah it's easy to suck. Not too easy to do what Mikes doing though.
I could literally find a million drummers that are in high school that are better than Mike.
+Max DC You do that and get back to us.
+Max DC that in no way makes him suck.
Best solo drum performance from him, it's been quite some time watching him doing some solo for some time
There is one thing everyone needs to understand.
+Matti Siik (M4Z4) you can't play shit. You may eat shit.
+Matti Siik (M4Z4) that's exactly what I was thinking
You're a shithead.
He has his own sound on any drumset that he plays
6:46 - so THAT'S his secret! A hidden third arm!
Mike and Mark Zonder...two of the best of all time.
Blown away!!!! This guy is king!! Wow!
He is a band-drummer, not a solo-artist.. his strengh is not to play insane soli, but play insanely good with other musicans and he also got great ideas for songs
This guy is an epic drummer xD
This guy is really good, he should have auditioned for Dream Theater!
he left dream theater in 2010...

Next level DRUM BEAST mode right there son!
He has good set.
Mike what BPM do you wanna do this at?
Mike: yes.
(Just poking a little fun Mike, I still love you)
MP is one of the best...LOVE the clear acrylic kit!!!!!
didnt know you could give such an amazing performance with drums only
its so smooth and perfect
I could play that with my eyes closed (though I would be dreaming of course).
I could play it with my eyes closed but it won’t sound anything even remotely like this does....lol
And watching said dream in a theater
Is it me or does this drum set sound "tinny"...Portnoy is great...it's the drum set. Not a lot of low end...could just be the room
Its all acrylic aside from the snare. Its what to expect from a non-wooden drum.
0:13 anyone know the names of the drums he's hitting?
Octobans
Oh man this is the grooviest of all the portnoy solos
mike is amazing in drummer coz he can play all of the genres. all of the members of the dream theatre are amazing!
His dynamics
Does anyone else think he would be a fitting Primus drummer?
I don't think I would've ever had that thought if it it weren't for this particular performance and you mentioning it first. But now that you do, dude that would be a match made in heaven. I'm rewatching this while adding Les and Ler in my head and it sounds so right.
Nah, Tim Alexander is just fine and just as good.
What a shame. Poor audio quality which is strange for this sort of video. Can’t hear the kick drums 🤔
your gear must have a problem, I can hear them, maybe you are looking for the wrong sound
Cool i thought it was me. I thought the actual kit sounded like shit.
The drums just aren’t mixed lol you’re listening to raw drums.
Simply say you like listening to autotuned shits. 💩💩💩
timbales sounded like ass too
The amount of things he can hit sequentially at such speed blows my mind
Really enjoy Mr Portnoys stuff, helps fill the void left by Mr Peart.
Alex Grachek overrated??
You said he’s overrated, but then told us why he’s so good. Ugh......ok.
And he's better looking
Man, this dude's a ROCKSTAR!
This man born with a drumstick already on his hand 🔥
Portnoy's complaint, there's never enough drums.
He's a metalhead, but on "In the name of God" they literally played latin. So yes, that's appropriate :D
it's actually an egyptian themed playing
@@frank_west. I mean: this is ment to be latin percussion. And in the aforementioned song they played a samba.
@@OskarCzechowicz-OmniMusician I from Brazil, and i can safely say that the solo session in In The Name Of God is not a Samba.
@@frank_west. yet it is what I was told latin music is :D have a nice day
@@OskarCzechowicz-OmniMusician you too, man! :D
This is one awesome drummer who can make a Hello Kitty kit sound good! Whenever he does anything, good, bad, or average, the MP Hate Club are ready to pounce. Get a life, guys, and try to do something great yourselves...
Amazing how Mike can make drumming that fast looks so easy.
I love stealing this man's phrases 😍🥰
