You should see a karate school in Hawaii . They have elementary kids that have black belts and high school kids with 2-4 degree black belts . IMO that’s a joke .
At my school (we also do bjj, which I've been doing for 3 years and have about another year until my blue belt) it takes 6 years to get a black belt in karate and you have to be 16 and we only have curriculum that will bring us to 1rst degree, we can't get higher.
Oh well now thinking about it, we have a system for kids under 7 years old, they do not have a curriculum because pretty much every day they work on wrestling and sometimes punches and kicks, but mostly it's like a wrestling school with karate uniforms, and everyday if they were being good in class they will earn a stripe and they need 12 to move up to the next belt, and then 16 stripes after green belt. But it's just a motivation system for the kids and doesn't mean anything, once they move up to the real karate class they start at white belt and learn the actual karate curriculum, but cannot earn black until 16 years old.
Now in my 5th year as a black belt and finally really feeling like one, despite my age. There are so many tweaks I’ve done to my jiu-jitsu, not only strategies and on-going technical improvisational skill-building, but especially the science of defense. I am referring to little nuances that are game changers. I don’t see why the hell people are in such a rush. You don’t know what you don’t know until you get there. Great video and I really enjoy the alerts I get from Kama JJ.
The last third of the vid is so true. Being tall, slim, and not really that heavy - the best compliment I can ever get from people I train with is, “Wait, How much do you weigh?” Lol. I assume it’s probably the same for a lot of women - being able to apply technique in a way that “feels” like it’s coming from someone much heavier than you are / appear to be can really catch a lot of people by surprise lol
As a guy with a decent powerlifting background who just started at a Gracie school two minutes in I'm tired and need technique to finish the match so we all need to learn proper skills we have female black and brown belts...they are savages and tap dudes all day
I agree with the whole obsession bit. You either are in quest of perfection and deep conceptual knowledge, from which actual techniques are conceived and developed or you languish in just learning moves and responses on a more superficial level. (2 cents)
Hello Matt here in NYC.. when I started as a white belt I was into powerlifting big time..so I used my powerlifting strength to beat blue belts with no technique..but as I grew more in technique I found out that I could take down the biggest 6ft, 250 pound guys who were very strong.. and were new to the school with my basic technique training.. just because they had no technique being new and they tried using strength.. I think as you said now my friend that technique and strength combined is excellent..but at the end of the day technique is the most important thing to focus on ... strength comes from time to as muscles develop..I know everyone has a bad day too and they might be under the weather and tired so just because I beat a higher belt doesn't mean my game was good...the other person probably was just not up to it that day and non-ego reasons they don't mind stepping back sometimes and just going for a gentle roll..I love your site... keep them coming.. you inspire me to study more and more
My buddy was beaming with pride that his 15-year old son became a black belt in taekwondo. I didn't have the heart to tell him that fact alone makes the art a joke.
Jay, a kid that trains with me, is probably going to earn a black belt in his teens. Quite possibly even his young teens. He's just that good. Edit: What you say about wisdom is true, and if not for that, he would 100% deserve it at about 13-14. Also, knowing that Bjj is not equal opportunity kinda makes me want to train it more, just to defy some odds.
Thank you very much Professor for such a great video. I absolutely agree with everything that you said. Being a black belt takes a lot of discipline, humility, responsibility, respect, effort, and other virtues. Peace, love, and blessings from Seaside, California. I love all of your videos and have always been a huge fan Professor.
So, is self-perfection and technique not enough? I'm getting old to be just getting back into this, and I don't fancy getting beat up in competitions or something.
As a father of one girl in kids jui jitsu as well as being a practitioner myself, I think woman should basically train with everyone. If they are getting ready for a tournament, they should mostly sparr with other women or other people who are of the same size and strength, but in general they should sparr with everyone as long as they are safe partners. When a lady reaches a high belt ie purple or maybe brown she should occasionally sparr with a beginner man who outweighs her by 100 pounds or more and goes caveman when he sparrs ie becomes overly aggressive uses brute strength and tries to man handle everyone. I think everyone should sparr with someone like that when they reach a certain level, but maybe not at the beginner and intermediate levels, because maybe many people may not be ready for that just yet and it may not be safe for regular training .
I'm a better teacher than I am a practitioner of Jiu-jitsu. Likely just due to years in and wisdom. I know you will catch hell for it but I agree with the female black belt being equal to a male purple. Its not a sexist thing, its just reality. I also think if you are female and not willing to train with the guys you need to do something other than Jiu-jitsu.
You know, that’s a HARD question to answer. Physically, a lot of your capabilities have diminished once you hit 40, let alone 50. I’m not gonna lie, if you’re starting after the age of 50 with the goal of becoming a black belt, you may have a rough go. If you have as your goal to learn and have a great time learning you while always challenging yourself regardless of the belt you wear...you never know, you may just be one of those over 50 somethings who legit earns a black belt.
@@KamaJiuJitsu Great answer! Having a rough go is not daunting and by no stretch is that a No. The hard truth is the hard truth but does not preclude any goal you set your mind to (Preaching to myself here!). Appreciate the honest assessment!
8:05 "she 5'5" 135lbs and she's tiny" Welp I guess there is no hope for me as a 5'5" 130lbs man.... (runs away) Lol nah, I just started back up again recently still at white belt and I can hold my own with the rest of the bigger guys
Yes. The idea is that they know the Techniques, and those techniques will transfer at any age. Besides that without a formal standardized circlium in BJJ, belts are starting to become very inconsistent, it's a lot like Karate Belts, it depends on the club. However, Judo Belts are consistent, and usually, have monthly tournaments underneath them where they compete with all the schools in the county or nearby districts, or at least our school does. The same techniques you use at a young age is the same techniques you use at an older age. You just are sharping the knife. It's like saying kids that with 60 amateur fights isn't as good as adults with 0 fights who practice a lot. No, those kids are flippin really good and deserve to be treated as so, and if they were the same size as you, you would have a rough day. Myke Tyson at 16 was a black belt. This is why the blue belt division is messed up in BJJ. Thought I would share but here is Kano and other sensie's in the 1950's teaching and randoring. They talk about groundwork and share techniques about 20 min's in. It's the first footage I found of the classic groundwork. It's cool. I was surprised on how much translates to today's game. ua-cam.com/video/A2hgzgJuJOo/v-deo.html
There’s always a detractor (or several) when one speaks of anyone. And the more “known” someone is, the more detractors there are, whether they know you personally or not, it makes no difference to the accuser. But if you know GM Rickson personally and he has personally done you wrong, I stand corrected.
Dangerous topic with all the feminists and libertards. lol. Jiujitsu is Jiujitsu but a man will always be naturally stronger than a women. Boys vs Girls as kids the girls can easily destroy the boys but once puberty kicks in everything changes. I think a woman deserves a Black belt if she is good and holds the knowledge and wisdom of JJ and is able to pass it on.
@@KamaJiuJitsu I wasn't even directing that towards you... I figured you were just answering someone's question.... and I figured you would say absolutely a woman can be a black belt.

I regret not taking this art the same time I took TKD. Understandable that credibility is important when BJJ is representing that black belt.
