In the beginning of the interview, I had the feeling that he wanted Merle to talk about being in prison with the dopey question, " What experiences....?" Merle didn't take the bait since he knew what was coming. This set the tone for the entire interview....you ain't getting nothing but one word answers. RIP, Merle

Merle was tired of talking about that, he never got into any more trouble after that! Well not that kind any how, he was only a young angry hurting man that didn't know what to do with the loss of his father.

I could not watch this all the way through. Haggard acted like he was sitting on a cactus and didn't want to be there. I had read that he was a very private man. One of my top music heroes.

Interviewer is inept but in spite of all the B.S., Hag covers some interesting topics here, especially about his song writing. Salute to the Mighty Merle Haggard!

About two minutes into this interview, I quickly realized it was not going to be worth watching.....and I got the impression Merle agreed with me. The looks he gave him and the small chuckles said it all! I LOVE MERLE, HE DESERVES BETTER THAN THIS!

".... the neighborhood good boy... " Hillarious !! About the connection between country and dixieland.... well western swing incorporates jazz into country music, so there's a connection. Merle didn't say this, but he knows it, because he's hired jazz players into his band. Clint Strong is a good example of this. Clint can play bebop stuff. He shows his prowess on Merle's recordings.

If I try to imagine getting a chance to interview Merle Haggard, I'd probably be feeling like a tiny, minuscule, dopey, bipedal primate attempting to gather the scope of one of the world's finest musical artists ever. The others commenting here have it pretty much right, Merle could see how the interview was shaping up after only one or two questions. I have to give Herb a lot of credit for taking on this monumental task. I'd have been going down in flames, but Herb actually came away with some pretty good insights, in spite of charging in on two left feet.

I, too, was tempted to flee this interview but somehow I got sucked into seeing just how much Merle would tolerate the interviewer reading from his prepared sheet. It's very much like the interviews Chris Farley did on SNL. "Remember that movie Star Wars?" Harrison Ford: "Yes I do." Farley: "Yeah, that was great!" or something like that...

the worst kind of interviewer, asks a question, then basically answers his own question and doesn't allow a living music legend to answer, he acted like he thinks that somehow he's more important that Merle, I remember hearing Johnny Cash say, what was that? I couldn't hear you, I was talking... maybe Merle should have said something similar? what was that again? I couldn't hear you, I was trying to answer your question, lol

Interviewer has a nervous laugh . . . Perhaps, Merle did not appreciate the interviewer reading from paper, too inpersonal. As well, Merle probably that much more, did not appreciate when the interviewer cut him off, did not let him speak when he offer a detail to share. Ugh. Disappointing, the interviewer's skills were so poor.
