The english applied to the cue ball depends on where you're trying to position it for the next shot. So there's no single right way to do it in every case. I understand what the video is attempting to show, that the "right" way will make it easier to pocket the object ball, but position for next shot is just as important as making the current shot.
I am a weekend enthusiasts and tmk there are very few times there's only one way to play a shot. The game is too complicated to make a "this is right" statement. A better idea would be "this is one way/option". 😊
I shoot this shot everyday and I never use the same English. If I was pocketing the last ball I would use top spin every time. If I'm getting position on another ball I will use whatever English is needed to accomplish that while accounting for deflection, throw and the speed in which the pocket will accept each shot. All of these variations will be needed to consistently run out.
That’s true. Even though I would say that apart from top, in this case inside spin also helps a little (gareth is using outside). Any ball not on the rail - usually outside spin helps with potting, any ball on the rail - inside. But of course, position is usually the priority.
Yes.. Ive had lesson from several very high end players and they universally tell me to just use a little follow on this unless I need to do something else for position. Keeping it simple
not really, at the professional level, the second one it's more correct if the only thing you want is to pocket the ball, a low amount of left spin will cancel the throw of the ball and help you pocket it
If it's your last shot maybe...t's funny that people believe there is a correct spin for any shot. Depending where your next object ball is both could be completely wrong or right. Set up this shot and practice making it with draw, top, stun, left spin, right spin, and everything in-between.
So for a start this is an English pool table. The point of the video is just explaining that using left spin helps prevent the object ball from bouncing off the rail. That is the only point of this video 😂 yes you can also use spin to get position but that isn’t the point of the video.
I know what the point of the video is - it's very obvious. You need to re-read the title of this video and then tell me my statement is incorrect. If you still do, you need to avoid playing anyone for any amount of money. While the technique shown in the video certainly works well if you're on the last ball, there are hundreds of destinations for the cue ball to go to continue a run or win the game that require a slight modification in where to strike the cue ball.
Someone explained this recently to me in terms of gears. Initially I thought that you would play into the cushion with right hand side but I guess here you are looking for the transference of check side on the cueball transferring to right hand side on the object ball helping it to hug the cushion.
Normally u would be right but that's only wen the object ball is to the right of u. In this case u would use slight left as it's already hugging the rail and u don't want it to catch the tip
Yep hitting left will put opposite spin on the object ball which makes the object ball spin in the direction of the rail which what you want....whew that's a lot of words for "just hit left" ...but it absolutely 100% helps to know the physics that goes on as to "why" you should hit left. You can then use that knowledge on your shots
He is a multiple time world champion, but the comments are correct; there’s no “right” or “wrong” way to play that shot in every situation- giving a “play this spin” for any shot is silly, every runout will require its own particular play. I get what Gareth is *trying* to show, that pockets will be made easier with certain spins, but to say “this is right … this is wrong” is 100% a bad way to communicate that message
This type of shot is my nemesis! I hate it, as a new player, this is one I struggle with, and it’s upsetting knowing that is one of the easiest one for many people!!
Also, If you're not scratching the piss out of the billiard cloth, your gonna miss. A longer tear will ensure for a more accurate more clean shot. Really try to gouge the slate too.

I always used top & they hugged the rail/cushion all the way down over the middle bag & in the top or bottom pocket. That was with my old Riley cue & even them 'bamboo shoots' in the bars to use. These days they're a little wayward, since starting playing again.
One cue tip to the right and one cue tip below center is the correct shot to improve pocket odds but don forget about the "squirt" or curve on the cue ball due to the outside English. Funny video though :)
It has its benefits hitting the ball with left hand side, it imparts right hand side on the ball.. This helps the object ball pull into the cushion and stick to it..
No, you didn't, and don't listen to the video, because it's incorrect. If you're a novice and need help making these shots and don't care about your leave, use right hand English on this shot. It transfers left spin to the ball, which aids it entering the pocket, and spin induced throw increases your odds of throwing it with the correct angle to pot the ball.
That’s actually not as right as the other. Because if the ball was planted to the wall, and you shot that and made contact with both, it would spin miss the pocket right so because the cushion would push the ball right, you counter with right spin to make the ball go left and counter the right push of the bank.
The ball roll allows for the target ball to stay on rail, don’t have to but that added english(spin) ensures the shot accuracy. Been diving deep into pool. Bata Reyez 👴🏽
I would do the latter simply because I will accomplish it more often, especially if I'm in competition and I'm a bit distracted or bothered. My composure or the lack of it is of course my responsibility lol.
One can use right, left top, bottom, bottom right, bottom left, top right, top left, and whatever spin and make that ball as long as you hit the ball correctly.
So: 1. It’s the English and where he strikes the Cue ball 2. It’s the amount of pressure, notice the cue stick to finger positioning on both shots 👏🏾👏🏾👏🏾👍🏾👍🏾
Now make the white ball full reverse throttle more than enough to make it back and forth the whole length. I've seen it done but I don't know how that guy did it.
Plot twist: both are right. Just make sure you aim correctly.
Don’t hit it so hard like the first shot
Exactly.
Thts a fact
Both are wrong
Lol doesn’t matter as long as it drops and your next shot is set up. Maybe shoot the first ball more accurately.
It doesn't really matter, if you hit it right.
It does, he gets to hit it lighter eith the left trace so the bag is more giving, whilst maintaining the position of getting off of the cushion
@@harryp2054no reason to use side
@@showup001. enjoy having more rattlers than me then mate
I think the video shows that it does!.... the difference is THE PACE!!!
It does make a difference. More so on a snooker table with tighter pockets I suppose but still
Actually the backspin isn’t wrong he clearly hits them with different power
it’s not even about the power it’s ab how u ain the shot the spin just helps the ball slide down the rail better
@@theawesomnes3848no it just helps get a better position for the next play
Exactly what I thought.. but who can disagree with a pro
Excellent point. Wouldn’t have noticed without your note.
@@Scholes123although this pro is almost definitely right, pros are often quite bad at explaining the why and this is a good example of that

This is the sole difference between intermediate and high level play.
No shot after the black
You essentially said the exact same thing I did seems like you probably hit a ball or two in your day
I agree with the comments there is no wrong and right if you make the shot and the cue ends up where you want it.

TIL that "English" is another word for side or sidespin, and can also be applied to "top" or "bottom" (aka "follow" and "draw".
either way is right. depends on what you want after the shot
After potting the black??
not really, at the professional level, the second one it's more correct if the only thing you want is to pocket the ball, a low amount of left spin will cancel the throw of the ball and help you pocket it
Come on bro, let's face it;
It's not right, it's left spin man.
If it's your last shot maybe...t's funny that people believe there is a correct spin for any shot. Depending where your next object ball is both could be completely wrong or right. Set up this shot and practice making it with draw, top, stun, left spin, right spin, and everything in-between.
It depends where you need the cue ball to go for the next shot. There are many ways to hit this shot effectively.
You are yet another person who has completely missed the point of this video 🤦♂️
Oh really? Tell me and others what's incorrect about my statement. And...let's hear your brilliant analysis, you know, what I missed.

Right spin on a ball on the left cushion is more effective. Dependent on the position for you next shot though to state the obvious.
You should put right spin, because it transfers left spin which makes it bounce into the pocket easier.
It also puts spin induced throw on it so you can cut the ball thinner and still hug the rail.
Never use spin to pot a shot. Spin is for position. Only use spin to put if absolutely necessary. If ur using spin to pot the ball ur doing it wrong
@@Sean-ry9ld this is 100% correct

Using running side, makes the pot a lot easier when you have an angle

Thank you for showing a clear description of English with the diagram🎉
You can make that shot striking the cue ball anywhere you want. If you’re aiming correctly at the object ball.

He just hit the ball to hard😅😅
so satisfying to watch that ball hug the cushion.
Do all you guys saying he's wrong, realize he's a multiple time world champion?

Lower left or upper right are both easy. The purpose of both is to make the object ball slide along the rail before starting to roll.
Depends on what you're doing and where you need to go. If it's the very last shot on the table, a touch of outside helps eliminate potential skid.
Side spin affects the direction of the ball after it hit the rail (apply to both cue ball and object ball)
Also, If you're not scratching the piss out of the billiard cloth, your gonna miss. A longer tear will ensure for a more accurate more clean shot. Really try to gouge the slate too.

Too left will also work. As well as top right…dependent on ball placement. The first shot is a given…set ur self up for the next. 😊
It’s not wrong.. less pace this would of dropped … as the comment below said :)
I think they both right depending on the situation
Would have* or would’ve…
You want to barely hit the rail before the ball. He hit the ball first which causes the ball to squish not the rail causing it to bounce off.
OHHHH thx for tips i always mess these shots up lol
Your fashion sense is fire.
good point, thats why I subscribed.
Wow the comments are so confused, it's mind boggling. The video is pretty simple.
That "this is wrong" is only wrong because you aim it wrong. If you aim this shot correctly, it will pot no matter if you put english or not.
And here was me thinking that angle and pace were instrumental
Depends on speed as well
I always used top & they hugged the rail/cushion all the way down over the middle bag & in the top or bottom pocket. That was with my old Riley cue & even them 'bamboo shoots' in the bars to use. These days they're a little wayward, since starting playing again.
Clear as mud!
I put straight bottom on them all the time and I pocket them no problem. It’s all about aim and stroke.
Accurate.
You play on an American table where you have to be blind to miss. If you played on an English table you simply wouldn't make that comment.
Unless you have to play for position, a little topspin will be a bit easier
You can do what ever you want with the cue ball in terms of side spin just need to hit the object ball and cushion at the same time
Both are correct just know how to not miss and know where your next shot is. In this case being the final shot doesn't matter
Top spin will allow an object ball to hug the rail and also offers a greater area to hit. All depends on what position you need after.
What a great coach. ‘This is wrong and this is right’. Yeah no shit Sherlock
One cue tip to the right and one cue tip below center is the correct shot to improve pocket odds but don forget about the "squirt" or curve on the cue ball due to the outside English. Funny video though :)
Good posting
Actually it's in fact Left 😄
You can make it with any spin when aimed correctly. Spin should only be used when you have to get the cue ball somewhere after the shot.
Both are right also 1st was hit alot harder than 2nd
It has its benefits hitting the ball with left hand side, it imparts right hand side on the ball.. This helps the object ball pull into the cushion and stick to it..
It depends on the next ball for preperation.
all are right, it defends on preparation
Easiest will be by putting right spin in this case. Needs running side not check side
I needed this
No, you didn't, and don't listen to the video, because it's incorrect. If you're a novice and need help making these shots and don't care about your leave, use right hand English on this shot. Less power in the 2 nd shot meant no rattle off the pocket , the left hand side is irrelevant except for tracking reasons
Left hand english usually causes the object ball to go a little right and I could be wrong but it would cause the ball to come off the rail
Господи! Прости и помилуй меня! Слава Богу за всё!..☀️💖🕊
"this is right"
"but that's left-"

You can make the ball with any spin if you allow for the deflection. Plain top is best for me.
Both work notice the slight speed difference in the second shot is slower and goes in
I find my poker teacher in a billiard club ❤❤❤😂
and if you hit the draw softer like the spin shot, it would have went in also
Great instructions
Ledge lucky after hard play -hustlers true point reviewing reals.
Top left forces the object ball towards the pocket reduces error. But both are ok approaches if you shot them correct. Ghost ball versus throw.. hmmm

Roll it with top and you will never miss it
Depends on where you hit the target ball...
Pocket side spin makes it easier, but isn't necessarily "wrong." You may need to put running pocket side English on the ball.
Gareth Potts plays too well to actually believe this. I wonder who is doing this channel.
She’s saying that throwing the ball in the pocket is more effective than any other English or center ball.
the first shot is more powerful than second shot, maybe thats why

Bottom left makes that shot much harder IMO
That was actually low left, not right.
If you hit it correctly it's not wrong on the first shot...yes the second shot makes it little easier providing you understand throw

It's incredible how many people try to correct this, when they don't know why the first one is wrong and the second one is right xDDD
Don’t play side unless you have to
Watch the dr Dave video. High and low, rail cut shot. It’s just throw.
Play them at the same pace...
One can use right, left top, bottom, bottom right, bottom left, top right, top left, and whatever spin and make that ball as long as you hit the ball correctly.
Pace is pretty important too though you melt
With these buckets you can just aim right and everything falls
Both are fine you just have to aim
This is so handy

So:
1. It’s the English and where he strikes the Cue ball
2. It’s the amount of pressure, notice the cue stick to finger positioning on both shots

Both of those shots go in, you just hit with more speed on the first one. Hit the first one with the same speed as the second one and it goes all day.
