    When I was starting out in life, a car was a luxury item, my bike I paid $300 cash for, it was $33 to register it, $10 to have it inspected and $143 to insure it for the year. I couldn't put a car on the road for that.

      I get where you’re coming from, the “luxury item” part. I ride mine to work every day, and it’s cheaper for me to use this bike than it is to drive a car. Brand new motorcycle with a warranty and peace of mind. Finance plus insurance, $230 per month. Used car, cheapest insurance I’ve found for anything reliable is $250. I’ve got a wreck on my record from 2 years ago and insurance companies spit in my face for it. For me, a bike is my only option. I didn’t ride in 6°F for the fun of it.

    • @benpielstick
      @benpielstick 4 роки тому +35

      @@BigStomper He said a bike is a 100% luxury item. That is false. Bikes are cheaper than cars, far cheaper, including gear, including training. I personally think that is one reason motorcycle sales are down across the board. Young people have no money for expensive luxury items. Nobody is making and effectively marketing cheap, practical, commuter motorcycles, for normal people. If you walked into a Honda dealership and the sales person said "You can either buy this Civic for $20k or this Rebel for $5k, both will get you to work and back just the same," we'd see a lot more bikes on the road.
      Most places in the USA, you can ride a bike year round. Even in places where it snows, if it doesn't snow that many days a year, you can hitch a ride with a friend or catch an uber or whatever for those days, and still pay less for transportation annually riding a motorcycle than you would driving a car.

      A motorcycle is usually a better choice, economically, over a second car.
      Yes, we wouldn't buy a bike if we didn't enjoy it, but just because we like something, doesn't make it a luxury.
      To follow your analogy, a Dodge Viper would indeed be a luxury item, but if i were to buy a small Hyundai instead, you can hardly argue it's a luxury item.
      Some bikes are luxuries and some are just a sensible commuting choice, it all depends on what you buy and what you use it for.

      @Vraetzught 4 роки тому

      @@TitusLennon in a family where both adults work full time, a second car is not a luxury if you require your own form of transport. In this case, you can choose for a motorcycle instead and still ride in all weather conditions. I know the group of people who belong to this category is a minority of riders, but they are plenty to take them into consideration.
      A car is not always a better investment, certainly not from my view.
      A cheap car is still more expensive to buy, maintain and insure, over a motorcycle with the same standards as the car in question.
      Also, you assume every motorcycle rider also has a car. I can assure you, not all of us do.

      @Vraetzught 4 роки тому

      @@TitusLennon i do understand your point, but i do not agree to it.
      To answer your point, what about those that choose a motorcycle over a car, not because they particularly enjoy motorcycles, but because they absolutely hate driving a car?
      Your arguments are very easily spun around in the other direction, at which point they are no longer representative of your hypothesis and work to counter it.
      You could just as easily argue cars are luxury items and everyone who chooses a car over a motorcycle, does this because they enjoy cars over motorcycles.
      Both are modes of transportation with their own pro's and cons and, imho, they should receive equal consideration.
      Painting every motorcycle as a luxury item is a gross generalization and does not represent the real world with all it's nuance

Registration and full insurance another $750 for a year and $20 per week for fuel (fuel is expensive down here). But free parking right outside of work. The fuel, registration and insurance was cheaper than riding the bus every day and driving a car would have incurred around $25/day or $5800 per year. It was a no brainer to get the bike.

Because of their relatively lower cost and also because of climate and traffic. Try driving a car through bangkok and then decide if a motorcycle is a luxury item or not. In America, yeah motorcycles are mostly a luxury item, but the world is a big place and there are many countries like india and thailand, phillipines, malaysia, where the weather is ideal for 12 months a year riding and they don't have the money for a nice car, but they can afford something like a cb500x or ninja 400 to get them around and part availability and service is available cheaply.

    I definitely agree with you on the last point. Go ahead and take out a loan for the bike, but don't add on gear and accessories. When I got my first bike, I borrowed a helmet from a friend until I had the money to buy myself one. And a former boss of mine heard I was buying one, and stopped by with some of his old motorcycle jackets. He gave me one of the ones he doesn't wear anymore. That way I could save up enough to buy a good one that I like, instead of just rushing to buy the cheapest one on the rack. Motorcycle riders area great people 99% of the time. And they want to see more people out on the road on two wheels. You'll find a lot of people out there willing to help you out with gear so you can get on the road. Now I have a whole bunch of my own gear that I saved up for and bought over the years. And I've given out some of my old stuff to friends or co workers when they bought their first bikes. But those accessories and gear can end up screwing you over when you go to trade that bike in, and the dealer ends up telling you that the most they can offer is $1500 less than what you still own on the bike.

    As stated in a lot of other comments so far, I think a motorcycle could easily be a daily driver, and something cheaper than a car/truck. I understand winters are a little rougher up where y'all are at, but down here it's riding season year-round. I do have obligations that require the use of a car at times, I have a small family that I can not transport on the back of my bike (safely). HOWEVER... Different circumstances, I would 100% be car free, and have a motorcycle for my only means of long-distance transportation, and utilize rental services on the rare cases where I need a multi-passenger vehicle. All that being said, I understand what you are trying to say. IF the bike is only going to serve the purpose of entertainment, and you don't have the money to afford it, then obviously your money needs to be prioritized to other things.

      The $7000 was likely the price before taxes and fees. So, it's unlikely he could have gotten 2 for $12k. More like 1.5 bikes. Those fees should have only been around another grand or so, so, they basically added a $4,000 extended warranty. Even if they included all the maintenance for the next 5 years, it's still a lot.

    Exactly... The dealerships make most of their money financing your bike/vehicle. The trick for the buyer is to get a loan from their bank or credit union and buy something cheaper than what their loan is. If you have a $15k loan, you want something that after taxes and everything else is under $15k, otherwise you are going to pay a separate finance charge and interest rate on top of your original bank loan.

    I have to point out an exception to your trade-in values. Every other year Harley does a retail for retail sale. Usually in May. It is a great deal. They give you the used value of your bike. If you buy a new bike at retail. I've done it twice. And it is a great deal for me. This spring I will trade my FatboyS for a Streetglide. And it will cost me probably 5k after all is said and done. And I pay cash no interest in finance fees! I love SRK cycles and I love what you do man.
