Small colony equals few options : Rimworld Anomaly Ep3

- I do love the early scramble, desperately trying to eek out every advantage you can. No wasted actions, every colonist accounted for. Everything is small and manageable, well for now. We have made good progress, lets see how small the threats stay from here on out.

“I’m just like any modern woman trying to have it all. Loving husband, a family. It’s just, I wish I had more time to seek out the dark forces and join their hellish crusade.” - Morticia Addams
That's incredibly appropriate.
So, speaking AS a scientist, I can confirm that we are not always the most 'normal' in the way we think. Masochist would certainly fit right in. You need at least a little masochism to do a PhD. Go-juice dependency is also thematically appropriate, trust me...
I have replaced at least half of my blood with energy drinks
@@chaosstripe9446 just wait until you find Adderall :3c
@chaosstripe9446 Only half your blood? My Ph.D advisor was convinced all my blood had been replaced by Mt.Dew.
I thought post-grads used the yayo, the booger sugar?
But he is a Hussar certainly not a scientist. It makes sense that a super soldier might be a masochistic, but do they have any interest to study the void? maybe a desire to find and kill monsters. I'm leaning towards no.
"You can breastfeed in a second, go grab a gun."
Living in Tennessee, that phase isn't as uncommon as you'd think.
I would have guessed Texas, but Tennessee isn't too far off.
Hogs?
"Dumbshit hit trap" is the most hilarious notification
turns out his name was appropriate!
When your kid grows up, you can potentially get a third member of your starter ideology (assuming you can wait that long). Now that I think about it, you still started with 3 colonists (sorta) + 1 ghoul.
Peshet is one heck of a mom. She does research, farming, stone cutting, and sculpting, but she is also taking care of a kid. Plus, she is one heck of a shot.
Masochist is perfect. When one of the psychopaths decides to get in a fight and beat them up they get a mood buff.
That proximity detector makes the statue look like the Eye of Sauron. Very fitting.
I've seen enough Hellraiser movies to know that a pain-lover will fit in perfectly with a group trying to open a portal to a dark dimension.
I would recruit the prisoner. Losing the arm sucked, but it's still someone who can do the less important things like haul, clean, and caravan. Plus, it's still one more person who can shoot. And if you can't find Go Juice after 25-30ish days, well judging by the last two play-throughs (which I loved), you are well versed in the art of disposal of unwanted colonist.
Hell, turn them into a ghoul and they'll stop needing go-juice and literally regrow their arm.
Would also help with the ideology stuff, via converting them while in prison. Meatshield and hauler/cleaner for thirty days, even if he can't find go juice, and then several options after that - just letting them die, slapping in a single gene to get rid of being a hussar, or the various forms of human resource usage. If he does manage to keep them on long term, hey it's a crafter with good combat stats, if not then no real loss when they're gone.
I got a +20 mood boost after seeing that you uploaded
The weight of the megaspider pulls on my shoulder muscles as I enter the kitchen, its blood started to set while I was hauling it back to base. The steady drip, drip, drip that followed me on my journey slowly congealed into a thicker, heavier sound as I made my way home. That Dumbshit ghoul is a messy fighter, all fury and no finesse. It’s a style I can appreciate.
The soft plop of something fleshy hitting the floor is barely audible over the sound of the cooling unit as I look for a spot to offload the carcass. To my far left seems to have the most space, checking right my eyes pass over the stripped corpses of the last idiots that tried to raid us, continue on, catch and jerk back. Theres a pattern on the lower abdomen of the one in the middle and as I look at it an idea starts to form.
Shuffling to my left I dump the bug before making my way over to the corpse to examine it. Once I’m satisfied it fits the vision playing behind my eyes I haul the body over to the butchers table and get to work.
There’s not much blood as I carefully slice a large rectangle from hip to hip but I’m too focused on keeping the cuts smooth to feel much disappointment. The slight ripping sound as I peel the skin from flesh is satisfying though. I’ve cut more than I need but it gives me easy access to the purple, grey ropes of intestines I’ll need for the thread.
I leave the rest for Smerk to deal with, better to keep him busy in here where he cant throw insults my way. The next time he flips me the bird though I swear by the Monolith I will rip his finger off and feed it to the ghoul.
Tanning has never been a job I’ve much enjoyed but I take my time treating the hide and gut twine. Cleaning the guts dulls the contrast of purple against grey, curing them dulls it further. If my plan works I’ll have to figure out a way to keep the colours fresh for next time.
Gathering my supplies on my workbench once I’m satisfied everything has been cured properly I start assembly. Hours of meticulous cuts and precise stitching later I'm finally finished. I don't realise how stiff I've become until I stretch and feel my spine pop all the way down.
Picking up the fruits of my labours I look for a shiny spot on one of the steel walls. My fingers are cramped but I manage to raise my new creation and fasten the clasp. The wall isn’t as reflective as a proper mirror but its clear enough for me to regard my handywork.
A band of soft leather about an inch wide and the colour of warm honey encircles my throat like a collar. At its centre a large white starburst surrounded by smaller white pinpricks sits. The slightly puckered scars are clearly long healed but they remind of the delicious bite firing a shotgun at close range creates. As soon as I saw them I knew they would look good against my skin. Turns out I was right.
Careful as I was though with the crafting I notice small imperfections here and there. Admiring the contrasting skin tones against my own skin I shift from one side to the other, noting the flaws and start to work out ways to improve them. My crafting skills aren’t the best but its nothing a little practice wont fix. I’ll have to try to be a little more aware of my targets in future fights, who knows what scars they’re hiding.
Theres also the option of catching a few and turning them into canvases instead of paint. I’ll have to experiment to see if my carving tools work as well on flesh as they do on stone.
A small smile lifts one corner of my mouth as I consider my options, excitement sparkles in my eyes. I’ve only just finished this project but I’m eager to start the next.
After all bloodlust doesn’t sleep for long.
Regeneration in most other games: "I can stay in the fight longer!"
Regeneration in Rimworld: "Ooh! Renewable resources!"
Never change Rimworld.
Brilliant! Make money by harvesting ghoul lungs and kidneys! The same ghoul. Again and again.
I think the masochist would fit in pretty well; the fascination for void sculpture sealed the deal...
for the chemical dependence, as other have said, there are plenty of solutions: crio-casket or ghoulification, to name a couple.
"we are gonna recruit exclusively psychopaths and bloodlust pawns"
....
"Why are my pawns social fighting all the time?" =))
It might be faster to replace Euphemia's xenogerm than to find go-juice. Since she's a hussar, any xenogene you give her will completely overwrite the hussar package and remove the need for go-juice.
I mean you might be able to come up with one or two, but a steady supply is probably a ways off
When i heared your voice looking at "child labor" i can already hear your greed to get such a colony up
This. FJ's voice has a very specific tone he takes when discovering new war crimes.
Francis is going to love Frostpunk.
About the prisoner: Its actually darker than you realized… she is a 16yr old with the title of “ship girl” go juice addicted masochist. 😳
And you chopped her arm off.
I say you have to keep her now.
Go juice addiction isn't that dark given she's a hussar - its genetic
Just to make sure she's a fit, give her the Pain Nail
Go-juice addiction because hussar.
i love the new "Search" function they implemented in the base game now.
Just press "Z" and type in what you are looking for...
saved me sooo much time already.
May also help you while looking for Weapons in your storage or Steel on the map.
Being Peshet's child, the baby should probably be called "Little Shet".
Kinky new mom, Rimworld folks! As for the fugitive quest, was very useful for my solo start anomoly playthrough, got my priest and crafter that way, and their starting flak clothing was very useful. If a blind healer turns up, their power can fix an arm up no problem, very useful for future body purist colonies.
Keep the masochist, I'd say it fits well with the suffering Anomaly brings
As someone who plays tiny colonies - the way to get enough folks for a priest is a) convert a prisoner, b) wait for Baby to grow, or c) do a ritual that gives a colonist as a reward (requires setup). So converting Euphemia works, or you could always imprison others for conversion purposes
Fun fact : You can farm nutrifungus on any type of soil that can support plants, not just fungal gravel.
So if you wanted a cheap and almost power-less greenhouse, just build a cabin over one of the patches of dirt, build a room, and grow nutrifungus in the dark. The only consumer of electricity would be a heater to grow the mushrooms in the winter.
The wiki says that you need ~12 (11.2) tiles of nutrifungus per colonist if you use nutrient paste and grow it on gravel, slightly less than potatoes, at also ~12 (11.9). It goes down to 11 tiles if you grow it on regular soil.
You will get a mood debuff, but I think it's worth it if you want to grow food year-round, especially if you can modify the ideology to nullify the debuff.
Unfortunately it's not potatoes so while it may help Francis is probably sticking with potatoes even if it's technically a poorer choice.
I am very pro potatoes on Irish grounds. Nutrifungus is great for saving power. But on this map for greenhouses the issue is the lack of arable land so I need to plant something more space efficient. We will most likely end up running corn or maybe even going hydroponics.
Yeah that's fair.
I'm just a fan of the mushrooms.
If you enclose a geyser, you don't even need heaters. You may need to place a vent and then keep it open during summer, but still, no power needed
Having a cook named Psuedo gives off some serious Walter White vibes (if you're unaware, the main precursor to meth is pseudoephedrine, often called "pseudo" by meth cooks).
The cool thing is you can goulize pawns and their limbs will grow back, even if they don't meet your qualifications for a colonist.
I would say, keep the Masochist Prisoner. The Flesh Arm is giving Pain when seen right. Sooo a Masochist in a Void Cult Colonie seems normal and right.
I would say masochism would fit perfectly in with people studying a dark entity through a creepy monolith. You can keep her, but good luck on the go juice.
Peshet: "I hate you so much Smerk."
Also Peshet: "You can't go out wearing that! It's cold outside. Let me sew you a hat first."
Francis, it’s not just any forces of darkness on the other side of that monolith, it’s definitely Aku. He’s finally fighting back after you locked him in all of your ONI bases
On the topic of recruiting the masochist, I propose this rule: Any traits that are allowed/required for recruitment are required on children growth levels. So bloodlust, psychopath, and boddy modder must be taken if available before any other traits are allowed. If you add masochist to the recruitable list, it must also be added to any children if it's an option.
I'd add if those traits don't appear before adulthood that kids a ghoul.
Daily Rimworld videos from FJ! What could be better!
I vote yes on the Masochism
You can just put in a stone door for your containment room, since the door makes a huge difference in the room, and opening speed is not important. Remember to roof it, though.
I like the idea of keeping the masochist as a caravaner. Send him trekking nonstop across the desert. He'll like that.
Also, I humbly suggest abbreviating Pseudonym Here to Pseu ("Sue")
Stun would be extremely useful against a certain invisible entity in the advanced category. As it has a psy sensibility of 2, a single stun can freeze it for quite a while.
Found something strange the other day; doors don't block wind turbines, so you can protect it by surrounding with doors.
Also, for this specific series on the end-credits, you could modify the message to: "To the patrons that make this all possible. You are the whisky that keeps me sane while I am being possessed by horrible entities, reading forbidden books and doing unspeakable things in the name of The Entity."
I also started the Anomaly scenario with just two humans, and both of them had terrible social skills with no passion. I didn't convert new pawns initially, but after gaining my fifth colonist, I imprisoned the new colonist with the best social skill until they had a crisis of faith mental break and randomly changed their ideoligion to mine. It was easier from there.
Also, masochists totally fit in with monolith-worshipping colonies and, as you play, you'll find out why.
Well every colony needs a priest eventually (can’t wait to see how you do it). Just thinking that they will automatically hate half the colony is pure gold sir hahaha
I'd say Psycopath, Bloodlust, Body Modder, and anything that gives the MORBID psyfocus type. Crafting is core to Mechanitor IMHO, so new guy would make a great mech-guy.
Keep in mind that the go juice dependency is due to him being Hussar. A massacist geneticaly modified space soldier who is missing an arm (probably will be replaced by some sort of bionic) among psycho scientists is actually really thematic
I just noticed, congrates on almost 100k. only 200 more to go.
Another vote for adding masochist to the allowed traits.
It is possible to convert a pawn’s religious beliefs while they are in prison so you can either imprison pseudonym to swap it over or change the armless persons religion, temp recruit them to make a priest and then dispose of them if your not keeping them.
Also, maybe hold onto the neuroformers until smerk hits knight so you can skip the last few ranks on empire honour and lesser room requirements for smerk for the cost of having that wealth sitting there for a while.
I vote for keeping the masochist for howeverlong he lasts. If in doubt, turn them into a Ghoul. ^_^
Masochist sounds like a walk in the park for this community. 😇 I vote keep
I suggest enabling the game music(unless it messes up with your monetization) because it enhances the atmosphere in this horror based expansion when certain events happen.
I think he mentioned that it was more it makes editing harder. But maybe as a background, added after editing?
Yeah, the new music is amazing
Please no background music! Even if the music is amazing, narration over music makes videos nearly unwatchable for me.
Glad you put Fahrenheit in, im tired of something being 40 degrees and thinking "thats not hot, its sweater weather"
Careful shooter made peshet hit so many of those shots. Who needs shooting skills when you have natural talent.
>Don't wanna walk the long way around
>It's almost the same distance
As someone with major in applied physics I can assure you, masochism and go-juice dependency are the traits allowing you to finish this grade in the first place
Even with no moral guide, you can still convert, it is just faster with a priest. You have a pawn with decent social, so you will get there. There is also low pop conversion bonus, or everyone would struggle with a naked brutality run.
Dumbshit: Effortlessly face-tanks an entire hoard of giant, killer insects without serious injury.
Also Dumbshit: Trips over a trap on his way home, losing an arm and a leg.
Dougas initially missing an arm might actually workout for you. It will greatly slows down their crafting speed, which means they will get a lot more exp for the same amount of material. If you're lucky you might be able to buy a bionic arm from a trader. Alternatively, maybe you can give them a tentacle arm. :P
I made the team! My first ride with FJ as a cooking doctor...it fits. Woo Hoo!
I'll try not to get you killed but I make no promises.
@@FrancisJohnYT It's an honor to be one of Randy's Chosen (a good name for a tribe, no?).
Books are also a new & great way to help with child learning.
I think I'd be "all right" with the Masochist that's missing their left arm.
Francis John is the gift that keeps on giving!
Recruit the prisoner. He got no arm, so ideal target to grow a tentacle arm.
Word of love is about to become your favorite spell.
A flame thrower would of come in handy in that bug fight 😉
You should press the disallow button on the open door leading to the traps, so none of your colonists or ghouls path into it. Would have saved an arm and a leg. Raiders will ignore your disallow order on open doors, and walk through them as normal.
Keep the masochist. Considering the variety of tropes and inspirations at play - including some from Hellraiser - someone who enjoys pain would fit right in!
Masochist fits in with this colony
Great stuff! Love this base and colony, feels different than your other playthroughs too. Can’t wait for more episodes! 👍🏼
44:28 Francis is so funny, jumping happy to get a psycho , heheheheheheh
Of course the masochist fits. He wants to see what horrors awaits on the other side to cause him maximum pain that doesn't kill him
Cold deserts like the Gobi and Atacama are really interesting IRL! Not the best place for longterm survival on the Rim, but you'll manage!
Geting a hussar pawn this early? "Yes, please!" (C)
Assuming you'll get her go-juice issue sorted, you'd getting a fast recovery pawn (not that imba-healing of zombie, ofc) with great combat skills (yes, I'm aware of missing arm), who could do much more due to her constant dope and completely immune to psy-stuff (probably - to the monolith related too).
The only negative here - you'd better have a psycaster with a "word of serenity" somewhere around in case of nasty things happens...
(also, her "carefull shooter" trait is a straight negative too - especially with such high shooting skill)
Keep Doukas, she is the ultimate Masochist by leaving on a raid without the thing she is deadly dependent on.
also she will be in her own little Hell guarded by Psycopasths and Bloodlusty pawns, with a Ghoul nibbeling at her toes at night.
I say. Do everything you can to keep her alive, but try your best to break her. i mean that's what she want's... Right?!
The zombie's name is quite appropriate considering what it did today...
Ah the joy of bloodlust pawns. Always ready to insult others 🤣. This is why I always avoid them early game.
Gotta say I like the smaller crew. Keeps it more personal. Recruit the newbie if you want but I like that you're using trait restrictions
The masochist prisoner is probably happy to be... Disarmed. I say keep them.
Maybe it's time for Peshet, the bloodlustful, careful-shooting, mad scientist mother to become a Mechanitor? She seems like the best fit for the job, and also seems to be a bit of a workaholic with how many tasks have been thrust upon her. Then again, I'd imagine that a psychopath like Smerk might feel a bit insecure about someone besides themselves being in control of a bunch of mechanoids.
By the way, Go-Juice Dependency is normally found within Hussar xenotypes (which also have increased toughness, which helped in keeping them alive after stumbling into that trap). Besides me wanting to permit the addition of masochists into the colony, which seemed to me to be so thematically-compatable with being within the presence of a bunch of psychopathic, bloodlustful, body-modding mad cultists (though in the masochists' case, I'd imagine that their relationship with the Monolith would be that they might view it as an instrument for delivering penance upon themselves, like one of those self-harming Flagellants during the Black Death), although it might be a bit costly trying to keep a Go-Juice dependent pawn alive, having a hard-working Hussar working for you might be well worth the increased productivity (mostly from Go-Juice) and the ability to avoid getting slowed from injury thanks to their Unstoppable gene. (Besides, it's not like we're debating about whether or not we'll be keeping a Luciferium addict around, which IS expensive, right?)
Oh, and I'm pretty sure any real-life psychopaths, if they were part of this kind of colony (including Smerk and the Imperial defector), would find restricting the colony to an exclusive club of psychopaths, bloodlustful people, body modders, and perhaps even masochists, to be overly restrictive, especially for an ambitious project like theirs, so methinks they'd welcome any help that they could get, even if said help wouldn't qualify for their inner circle, and even if some of those colonists would be considered more... disposable, or even a threat in the long run. After all, real-life psychopaths lack the capability to empathize with others, or consider the consequences of their own actions, and to top it all off, they are obsessed with control over others, so manipulating people like tools would come as naturally to them as going out to a restaurant.
Oh, and perhaps your colony's ideoligion could morph to allow for such dark themes as human sacrifices and cannibalism? I'm sure one of your psychopaths would be all too eager to assume a role of leadership in such a cult.
You have thought way way to much about this 😂
Though I am tempted and would like to subscribe to your news letter.
Really enjoying your trek into the weird world of Rimworld Anomaly!
Regarding the prisoner, my vote is to enslave him. Much faster turnaround then recruitment, plus he already enjoys wearing a slave collar. Also...
Once you have the anomaly research for it (i.e. Ghoul Infusion), you should turn the prisoner into a ghoul. He's got fantastic melee skill, plus all those tasty Hussar genes (e.g. unstoppable, superfast wound healing). Furthermore, transforming someone into a ghoul suppresses substance dependencies, so no need to feed your hussar ghoul go-juice.
So, in summation, enslave the hussar and put them to work. Then, probably around the time they pass out from go-juice withdraws, you should have the means of turning him into a ghoul to then serve as a regenerating melee beatstick alongside dumbshit.
It's what Aku/Cthulhu (Akthulhu?) would want you to do.
The bad news is that xenogenes are lost on ghoul resurrection. Considering that ghouls almost always die instead of getting downed it’s a problem.
@@matthewbauerle7153 Good to know! That's an interesting tidbit; thanks for sharing.
That said, that wouldn't change my suggestion. I haven't found ghoul turnover to be all that bad, especially once I have 3+ to spread abuse across on the front line, doubly so once I'm able to buff them with the ghoul-specific implants.
But more than that, the difference between a ghoul with the hussar xenogenes and a ghoul with baseline genes only is modest, since they're main role is being regenerating beatsticks that have few needs and recover from all injuries for free. Ghouls are more like a mechanitor's scythers (expendable melee attackers), but with no range limitations and being self-repairing.
The main perk is the prisoner would lose the go-juice dependency AND would grow back his lost arm.
Seconding this. Psychopaths having a masochist slave and turning him into a ghoul later fits the theme of this playthrough
Yay more rimworld!
comment section stories involving Peshet are going to be absolutely wild for this series
TBH if I crash landed on a world with some call of cuthulu shit I'd at LEAST check it out. I think the "curiosity killed the cat" runs strong in a lot of science minded folks....
Having a quick break from Anomoly myself just to have dinner, and I see FJ has uploaded 4 minutes ago! Perfect timing my dude!
Hope you didn't eat without a table. ;)
About the hellcat rifle, a lot of the anomaly give you new ways to do fire damage. You put two and two together :)
About prisoners, why not put your prisoner in the same room as the eldritch abomination? Could save you some space, and maybe motivate them to join your ideoligion...
I am soooo excited about this series
LOVE this series
The slow creep back to mod critical mass is my favorite part of a FJ RimWorld playthrough.
I wholeheartedly suggest you installing RPG-style inventory. It helps so much. It also shows comfortable temperatures right there and then and you don't have to make extra clicks.
"You can breast feed in a second, go grab a gun.
*Click*
There you go, now you can breast feed"

Rimworld and FJ, never change lol.
Any trait that unlocks morbid fits the theme, imo
This colony has organ harvesting written all over it.
Nice!
Arrest a colonist you want to convert, or convert a prisoner. It’s slow, but I had to do it for my solo mechanist start.
Your new bedrooms have no roof
As a masochist I cant imagine Doukas would be all to upset to be a medical subject....or a ghoul, which if you think about will fix that arm right up.
Hellcat rifles are weaker, but that flame thrower is VERY useful with Anomaly. Wont say why to avoid spoilers, but you want sources of fire sooner rather than later. Same with EMPs. In fact, go get those EMPs ASAP!
As for the prisoner, you'd have to be a masochist to want to live with a bunch of crazy people. They'll fit right in!
Some new events regularly reward archtech limb. Other events can grow arm replacements.
Thank you for your explanation for the trait choices. Not psychopath killer, more crazy enough to stay and study an evil artifact that can cause mutations.
Also I'd think with that definition a masochist would fit.
56:00 if you recruit the prisoner, she could do additional research. Lab assistant if you will. Intellectual of 4 and willing to work for her living. 🙃
Yes to the masochist.
Gotta keep the masochist. With the missing arm and his backstory you've got your own Winter Solider.
The masochist fits with the theme...anything dark.
Love this game! great show!
Cool caravan trick.
Add the oone-armed masochist to your colony. The arm can be replaced and you really need the crafting skill and passion, plus they've got solid fighting skills. The only real downside seems to be that a non-psychopath non-bloodlust colonist will have problems with the whole human skin/meat industry you have going, everything else is solveable over time. That said, I think the masochist trait is going to come in real handy as you explore more of this anomaly stuff. And who knows, maybe the psychic deafness will turn out to be a valuable asset in the face of nightmarish mind-warping monstrosities you're probably going to face!
The prisoner definitely fits.
