Ah, thanks for this. It's a very important part of my workday to constantly jump in the middle of my desk without it breaking and splitting me in two. Now I know this desk isn't for me.
idk man, I regularly sit and stand on my desk when working or mounting something behind it, needless to say all my desks are steel frame and I'm only ever gonna get steel frame desks for any of my workspaces. They're cheap and often even free on the used marketplace over here anyway, so I see no reason not to. the 70s and 80s factories, offices and schools loved steel frame desks
With any desk, regardless of it being marketed as “scratch resistant”, it’s always good to at least have a small mouse pad, or a full-size desk pad to protect the desk surface.
Even without it, you'll be fine, as long as you don't do a "jump and smash". The leg is just to reduce sagging, to assure a more level surface. Obviously, it can hold the weight of a person, without any issue. Unless you use it as a work bench to rebuild an engine, it will handle anything you put on it, plus, it's safe to lean on.
@@mbj920 Or buy a plywood panel at your local (wood) shop (which is probably cheaper), mount legs on it and you'll be good for the next 10ish years. I'm never buying a table from ikea again.
xDuckeh I appreciate it but I bought mine long ago and love it, it serves me great and can hold 3 monitors + a heavy big PC. I wanted shelving rather than legs so it could hold it comfortably
A good budget desk top but the best part with this setup you can always upgrade to a better counter top later to use as the desk top if you are low on funds.
This was helpful and entertaining! I’m actually looking to get this desk for my sewing machine and crafting projects. I was afraid the desk would not be able to hold my 16 lb sewing machine, but I have been pleasantly proven otherwise.
I'm glad i found this video, i was looking at honeycomb paper filling linnmon and particleboard and i can tell that the paper-board will be enough for my setup as i will have 1-2 monitors and some light components in the middle, great video.
I posted a stress test video as well, as my very first post on UA-cam. I also stated dimensions, and weights in both American and Metric, because I (we) have no idea who is going to see the video, and what metric they understand. UA-cam is global!
Thanks Mattie! I got a kick out of your video but more importantly what not to by. I'm looking to upgrade my set up as well. Thanks for you help and sense of humor :)
All of the IKEA tabletops (especially the LACK tables) have this cardboard inlay. If you want a sturdy desk, you should get a solid wood tabletop like a kitchen countertop
Good video. I actually bought it and feeling the weight I thought, oh my gosh what did I do, wrong decision - it is not heavy enough to be sturdy. Your extreme test showed me: I really expect no further problem with my choice anymore. Thanks.
I have no problem with construction. It's strong and light as you've proven. The only thing I wish is that Ikea used a veneer or formica on the top instead of what amounts to a painted surface. That would make for a much more durable surface.
This was really hilarious but also informative. Now I know how much I can put on my IKEA Linnmon table without breaking it. Good job taking it to the breaking point.
This is the best test I have ever seen! I have one of these desks that is about to get replaced by some butcher block I found for a great price but it has definitely held up for me as well. I have the same type of setup 2 Alex file drawers with the Linnmon on top, it has held up my PC with 2 monitors (a 32 inch and a 27 inch) since I got it without the middle leg. Definitely would recommend this to someone that needed a cheap desk setup. It is much better than a folding table (I have seen so many PCs damaged because of folding tables).
06:40 the same pattern that use a basic door (only more compact), 4 sticks to form the frame and inside this type of honeycomb pattern, so it's a horizontal door.
I’ve had this desk for over a year and never knew it was cardboard. I thought it was made out of complete wood, I wanted to buy another one and saw it in half to make a custom one. I’m glad I watched this before, I would’ve been shocked 😂
CRACK TRICKS hell yea. I have my tv of 43 inches on it, a stand with my laptop when I do homework, it also fits my ps4 and Xbox as well. This desk is amazing and it’s cheap as well. It be best if you put it on wood tho, it doesn’t do good on carpet. They have different size ones at ikea, if you got one near you, I’d pick it up. With the 4 legs it cost me around $35 I think, buy a drill from ikea tho. You’ll need one to build the table unless you got some jacked ass arms to build it with just a screw driver
I have Linnmon tables in my studio where I do my oil painting work. The melamine coat makes it easy to clean up and, even though the table tops are scuffed, stained and dinged, when I need to replace them it will be easy and cheap to do. The Alex cabinets work well for the sides and, on one, I have a filing cabinet supporting the middle of the table so it's extra strong. I had a Canon pro printer on one for years, it is a huge and heavy printer, but never had any issues with it.
@@kadenburton7450 “Most?” Definitely not true. I live in California and I’ve never been in a house with cardboard doors. Only real issue I have with mine (it's not this longest version) is I found out the hard way you can't clamp a monitor stand in the middle. I got one with a long swing arm and was able to clamp it to the end next to the leg mount tho since there's actual wood there. Krille legs left me room to do that.
That’s why you get a keyboard and mouse pad cause it won’t scratch your desk, and you mount the monitors to the wall so you don’t need to worry about the desk breaking in half
I had a dual monitor arm on a linnmon desk. One day i heard some cracking. Looking at the mounting point for the monitor arm, and it was halfway inside the table.
I have the same desktop only the shorter one and the problem with the cardboard design is if you have dual monitors on a desk clamp mount then the clamp will push right through the top making your monitors slowly sag forward until the clamp finally pushes through the wood causing your monitors to fall.

Tell ya what, im actually applauding ikea for this one. If you were to use a similar board with 4 legs; thatll cost you about £20. £20 for a sturdy desk. Im genuinely surprised with this
It's actually insane how strong ikea's honeycomb particle board is. Was worried at first but decided the smaller version due to limited space and budget. Happy with it for my laptop and monitor.
Just make sure you’re not using a monitor arm, or if you do, buy one of the steel reinforcement plates (spreads load out over larger area). Ikea desks are known to fail over the course of a year using monitor mounts
Trying to see what I should upgrade to, the sides of my Linnmon are peeling off because of how poorly it's designed. I had my microphone mounted on the side and it apparently didn't enjoy the pressure.
I made the mistake of getting one of these. Less than 6 months in, my monitor arms literally started crushing the paper filling to the point where all four sides popped off. Thankfully I managed to notice in time, otherwise the $80 table top would have caused me $1500 in damage to my equipment! definitely go for a solid wood table if you plan on using a monitor arm that clamps onto the table.
@@MattieKB Please, do so! The thing to look out for when purchasing at IKEA is to avoid any and all desktops or table tops that have the label "honeycomb structure paper filling". They all fell off because the screws obviously had nothing to screw into! Never making the same mistake again.
