    I like how you guys talk more in detail about battery. Many reviews just read the number from website without using it.

    Oh how far we've come, when you hear the words "Only 10 hours of battery life" hahaha. Only a few years ago laptops were lucky to get 3-4 hours just doing super basic tasks with the brightness as low as you could stand.

    Having the processor in the screen half and the GPU in the keyboard half is just such a great idea thermally. Most laptops with a 965M are much heavier 15 inch models. Even without the touchscreen or tablet parts, I hope others start doing this just for the higher allowable GPU TDP.

    At 8:50 you said the only way to get 2 or more monitors, additional USB ports, and an ethernet adapter on one dock is to get the MS docking station. This is not true. I just purchased one of these for a coworker and used an HP 3005pr USB 3.0 port replicator and it works great. The port replicator includes an HDMI and DisplayPort jack to hook up multiple monitors (yes you can use them both and get dual screens), 6 additional USB ports, plus an ethernet jack.

    All my school lectures are in powerpoint slides so I use my pen a lot.
    Definitely the best school laptop out there. Try doodling on diagrams, physics, math and chem problems on other computers. It's a nightmare. I take notes directly on the PP slide while in fullscreen mode.

    Despite not all of its unique features appealing to all customers, the Surface Book does nail many of the key points of a great laptop:
    -Great Screen
    -Good Battery
    -Strong Performance
    -Sturdy and Attractive Design

    @DarkHalmut 8 років тому +31

    The pricing is a joke they can only get away with because nobody else has this form factor. If you don't draw on it, there is no point in shelling out $1000 more than a comparable laptop from another manufacturer.

      DarkHalmut pretty much

    • @Folopolis
      @Folopolis 8 років тому +15

      The reason it is so expensive is that they want their hardware partners to come in and under cut them. MS knows that their advantage over Apple is in variety and they don't want to lose that by pushing out Dell, Lenovo, etc.

    • @MetalXMind
      @MetalXMind 8 років тому +3

      To be fair i think the surface book competes directly with the macbook so the price isn't an issue, if you are in certain fields you don't care that much about price to a certain degree but rather if it makes you more productive and your day to day operations less of a pain. I am actually super interested in the surface book from a hardware perspective, the only problem is the software side and i don't see that changing anytime soon for most people in my field (Web Design&Development) .

    • @LauS0
      @LauS0 8 років тому +6

      DarkHalmut so because you personally don't use some features this should be cheaper?! because f**k logic

    • @Folopolis
      @Folopolis 8 років тому +4

      ***** This laptop is meant as a technology demonstration. They made it good for students and artists because they saw it as an area their hardware partners weren't serving well enough.

    I wanted to save money and buy a Lenovo 910 or x360 but they are removing the digitizers and active pens. I don't understand why when they kept it on their cheaper modes and one of the main selling points of a hybrid is the ability to use it

    Excellent video and review. I too have had the Surface Book for about a year and had significant difficulty with it's "bugginess" to the point that I was about to jumps ship and go to a Mac, but MS seems to have fixed most of the issues. What I'd like to know, and what doesn't seem to get addressed in most review videos, is comparing the ecosystems between competitors. If this machine is targeting people who would normally be considering a Mac, it would be so helpful to have a rundown as to what the Windows ecosystem offers vs. the Mac.

    I've had mine for a long time 4-5 months and I'm happy i never had the problems you had with it. But i had one that you didn't. When you flip the clipboard, and incline your screen to draw or photoshop, once every hour i think, the screen freezes for a second. Sometimes it's annoying, but no piece of hardware is perfect. Although, i recomend it at a 100%.

    I have the old version, and it sounds like they really didn't change anything.
    NOTE: I can't stand the screen resolution. It's horrible when dealing with screen recording, and many programs hate it. Even Microsoft's programs are almost impossible to read, and isn't friendly with the resolution.

    OK people. I am thinking of buying a SB1 with performance base. *Do you think it's still worth it in 2018? What are your experiences?*
    It'll be my main workstation for business. I'll mostly use it with the Surface Dock (dual screen), for photo editing and magazine publishing. I may occasionally play about with some video editing too.
    Specs are:
    i7 (6th gen)
    512GB
    16GB RAM
    Nvidia dGPU

    great review. I've got the middle option from last year and it's easily the best laptop I've ever owned/used. I use the pen relatively frequently to take notes in class. I don't game but I do run a gamit of computing software packages. I'm glad you brought up that the top screen disconnects at start up I've also found that if you move the screen it will disconnect for a second or two. that's my only complaint about the laptop though.

    Can you please try out the connector on the screen part, I think there is a hope for MSB to connect to an eGPU if MS is willing to release the specification of the connector or someone can work out how to do it, this can be a huge potential for MSB to match the current laptop market with other competitors' products such as Razer books, Dell XPS, and HP spectre-13

    The objections to the Surface Book, here and elsewhere are:
    1 - lapability. The screen wobbles in laptop mode when touched
    2 - the fulcrum hinge creates an objectionable gap "Could accumulate lint" according to one reviewer.
    3 - battery life of the detached clipboard/tablet is weak.
    4 - not a sufficient platform for video editing. "The Ultimate Editing Machine - Not!" one reviewer complained.
    5 - headphone jack misplaced - top of screen vs. bottom
    6 - keyboard a bit mushy
    7 - Trackpad not responsive
    8 - WIN10 not stable
    9 - lack of WIN10 specific apps
    10 - "It's not as good as/I've always used/serious designers only use" a Mac.
    11 - Not a gaming machine
    Those are the biggies. There are many more.
    My group of collaborators began to tire of the lack of refresh in the Apple line of desk/laptops. Understand, we are a very agnostic group. You can fall in love with another person. Anything else and you are just plain weird. We only want to provide value to our clients. Technology is a productivity investment. Each of us has a history of experience with machines, operating systems and apps dating to 1982!
    We were limping along on some 4 to 10 year old, mostly Apple, machines. We like to suck every last ounce of value out of our investments before anything is discarded! But we've always been a mixed group. The time came in early 2015 to bust the budget and buy new hardware. Most of us - but not all - have to be mobile all the time. After lots of research and loud arguments, we pulled the trigger on a 5 new machines. Purchased over a 14 month period, all were Surface Books. Min config - i5, 8 gb, 256 SSD, separate graphics processor. Max config - i7, 16 GB, 1TB SSD, separate graphics processor.
    We are a design house dependent on Illustrator, Indesign, Photoshop, & Iinvision, All are running on our new platform. Answers:
    1 - Wobble: We don't need touch when in laptop mode.
    2 - Fulcrum hinge gap: A dirty backpack is bad for lots of reasons. We keep our portable machines in sleeves.
    3 - Battery life when detached: We don't use the clipboard all day. It is "The Ultimate Laptop."
    4 - Insufficient for video editing. "The Ultimate Editing Machine - Not!" one reviewer complained. The tricked out I7 model has never let us down.
    5 - Headphone jack misplaced. Get a life.
    6 - Keyboard a bit mushy. We love it!
    7 - Trackpad not responsive. Ours are.
    8 - WIN10 not stable. Get off the Insider program! We have four production machines on W10 Pro (whatever is the most recent non-Insider release) and one experimental machine on the Insider Ring. Standard release is rock solid.
    9 - lack of WIN10 specific apps - Illustrator, Indesign, Photoshop, & Iinvision work fine for us.
    10 - "It's not as good as/I've always used/serious designers only use" a Mac. We used to agree with this.
    11 - Not a gaming machine. Right.

      Thanks for the design house feedback, Bob. So video editing, utilising PP and AE, is relatively glitch free? The portability and touch aspects appeal to me, as is my interest in seeing how SB (i7/16Gb) performs with my design/layout prog of choice, Xara.

      "relatively" is a tough one. Our video editors complained of the small form-factor - not any glitches or rendering delays. On the initial pass, they got the completely tricked out i7 machines. Since then, we've put a couple of tricked our Studios in the mix and everyone is happy. Except for one thing: the absolute impossibility of upgrading any of these machines by users. We were accustomed to period upgrades done in-house especially memory, storage and graphics. Our Lead Nerd has already opened cases on the Studio and Book. His assessment of upgradability/replacement - "Epically Hopeless."

    This or MBU 15 (2015 retina) or razer blade? I mainly use PS, Ai, AE and final cut pro (looking forward to shifting to premiere) in my college and for works. The idea of drawing screen is enticing for such a great avenue of design work but im not a fan of tablet laptops. I care about: 1. great screen 2. fast boot and processes 3. can easy render 4. powerful but easy to use.

    Didn't see much on performance here. Skipped through a lot of the video to find more gameplay footage or benchmark stuff. Probably should change the title.

    I am using my brothers surface book right now and it is the best laptop ever, but also I found some of battery claims to not at all be true with my usage. The clipboard alone lasts 4 to 5 hours and with the keyboard it's just unbelievable . My brother takes it to work without his charger because it easily lasts whole day.
    Also, I have the i7 dgpu edition, the one that came out last year, and it can run Farcry 4, Battlefield and even GTA 5. So I don't know why he said that it was only good for Rocket League and such.
    Also I use the tablet with the screen reversed alot, as browsing on the 3:2 screen is just perfect.

      Its pretty damn good for the portability. I have one and have used many other laptops and its by far one of the lightest ultrabooks + I can get WORK done on it (3D Graphics, CAD, PS, Illus, ID), like legit work, not excel/word.

    I don't think spec lockdown is the reason it doesn't have a Pascal GPU. The lowest power Pascal GPU uses 70W (mobile variant of the 1060 3G), there's no way a notebook the size of the Surface Book could manage that. I don't know what the mobile variant of the 1050 will use, I haven't seen any machines with it yet.
