I would like to correct a misrepresentation of the surface pen made during this review. The reviewer notes "the pen registers marks before the pen tip touches the screen". I am a heavy pin user on my Surface 4, and Surface Book and that behavior is just a bug that crops up every once in a great while, and it is easily fixed by just removing the battery power from the pen i.e. turning and pulling out the eraser pen assembly a little so that the battery contacts' disengage, and then reengage the battery contacts by reversing the previous step, and if that does not fix the problem then reboot the Surface. I noticed this problem when I demoed the Surface 4 and Surface Book at the Microsoft Store last year before it shipped. I thought it was a show stopper for me, but my quick thinking of resetting the battery power on the pen solved the problem during the demo! And like I said, it has only happen once or twice since then, and it is easily fixed as noted above. I have extensively demoed the Surface Studio at the Microsoft Store using the pen, etc., and definitely it will be my next computer purchase.

Matthew Rath That is also true. As I said, this pc is ALL about the screen so selling the csreen by itslef is kind of illogical. very possible they did that to keep the cost down. Anyway, it is not for gamers. I am sure gaming manufactures will bring similar products seeing the demand.
Yea I've had this happen on very rare occasions. the battery trick fixes it. TBH it's happened once or twice in my two years with a Surface so it's by no means a big issue. Wasn't good form reviewing the pen while it was bugged out though.
It really annoys me how little RAM they include at the lower price point, and how expensive it is just to get more RAM in the thing. Photoshop is a RAM guzzler and in a computer designed for Photoshop and other Adobe products having an 8GB model at all is a complete waste.
Norm, I was brought to Tested page some years ago when searching for Sony A6000 reviews and subscribed that very day. However, I did write a rather harsh comment complaining (not flaming) about your articulation not being up to broadcast standards. Well, let me set the record straight: Bravo! I mean freaking, "B-R-A-V-O!" he says in his best Trinity College Upper Class Twit Accent. Bravo my boy; I'm very proud how you've developed as a broadcast journalist. On a final note, don't be afraid to up your compression during your This is Only a Test segments. You've developed a marvelous mellifluous voice which might benefit from some more compression. Cheers from a real fan.
As an artist with a surfacebook. It is SO frustrating coming from wacom 1. no hover-right click, dealbreaker for most 3D apps like zbrush, 3ds max (software) 2. the button is hella hard to press! pair with problem #1 and you get tendinitis (pen design) 3. only one button, Wacoms 2 button index/thumb rocker is SUPERIOR (pen design) 4. zig-zag wiggles when drawing diagonals slowly. Makes drawing circles look bad. (surface hardware) Otherthen these things I love my surfacebook it could have been the best ever. But these 4 dumb flaws make drawing frustrating, I have owned my surface book for 6 months
Yea, it helps. I use something similar, at slower speeds it still shows up unless you have the averaging set super high. but then the cursor is less responsive.
Scott Vigil for the hover right click you can have a workaround installing RadialMenu (radialmenu.weebly.com). It's not perfect as a software but if you remap your pen button as a right click with it you will have a right click with hover as long as the software is running. I would also recommend exploring the radial menu, but that is something not everyone likes or need.
Excellent review! I always appreciate when artists are brought in to give their opinion on something, rather than tech reviewers just saying "welp I'm not an artist, moving on."
Thank you guys so much for getting actual artists to use the product. I've read a dozen reviews for this product by non-artists who don't seem to understand what the product is supposed to do, who it's for, or what it's competing against.
I agree that they should make a separate display version. we need more mainstream cintiq competitors to break the monopoly on digitizer displays. there are always the Chinese ones like huion and such, but the software support isn't very reliable.
For about a year I thought that Apple were the best of the best and i saw microsoft laptops an PCs and just thought that it was terrible against Apple. But Apple aren't getting better or worst ( why the hell do we need a 'touch bar' $2500 just for a slimmer and a touch bar! its the same as the last one!) but Microsoft is now on top with the new surface range and VR! so I now prefer to get a Surface Book than a Macbook or a Surface Studio than an IMac or even a Surface Pro 4 than an IPad.
That was an excellent review, very in depth on the pros and cons of the machine. One of the best reviews of this machine I've seen so far. Great job Tested!
A little bit of misinformation here. There is indeed a button on the side of the pen that functions as a right click. It's the grey strip on the side of the pen. It doesn't look much like a button though which is probably why they didn't notice it.
this is one of the best reviews i've seen in forever. bringing in people, showing them using the product, narrating their usage, the alignment of both narration with cutaways to them, its great. -- my biggest reservation is that this is a windows machine not macintosh. maybe this could be turned into a Hackintosh...
By far the best review of the Surface Studio I've seen. Norm, you covered exactly the things I was still wondering about after watching other reviews. Getting skilled digital artists in to test showed drawbacks other reviews only alluded to. I really want one of these, but I think I'll wait for version two in a year or so.
If MS was smart (and they have been lately) they could solve the pen problems quickly. Just admit it and fix it, that is the least they could do for a product that could be a classic.
This is a fantastically thorough and practical review, so much good information to take it. I would've loved to see a little more text on the screen whenever there's a lot of numbers or specs being thrown out just to help the information stick but other than that, no fancy camera work from The Verge's reviews can come close to how great this review is. Keep it up!
Unfortunately, that pen dropping lines without still touching the screen actually is a huge dealbreaker. I'm sticking to my cintiq for now, i was hoping they would finally step up their game with the pen, since all of the other hardware is there, pretty big oversight imo.
Eric Pellegrini This may also be a software specific issue. I couldn't tell what he was using when that issue turned up. The little fish hooks in the ends of strokes is pretty common with most active pens.
Rick Rodriguez could be, maybe it's not the case in for example photoshop. But from my experience with the surface pen, the pen needed an upgrade anyway, the wacom pens are just better and more reliable in terms of sensitivity. I mean it's close, but it isn't there yet.
The sensitivity is completely programmable. There is a difference in activation pressure, with the pen having a higher pressure. Most people trying out the pen from Wacom see this as a sensitivity or reliability issue, when it's just a matter of adjustment. It's no different with actually pens and pencils, except in the real world you know that these differences exists.
Rick Rodriguez Hi Rick. I've owned this type of Surface Pen since the SP3, and now a SB. It's not a software issue. It's just the pen. It happens often with the tip just needing to be reseated. Software draws when it's told to. It's the hardware sending the wrong signal. This is a known occurrence, and I'm surprised they didn't try and do the known solution. The computer has also been reviewed by many others and no one noticed this. Penny Arcade used it for weeks and it was fine. If it was a software issue it would effect everyone with the same software.
Really like the way this review was done. Norm's been doing great. I realize there's a lot of behind the scenes folks and whatnot but I've been following Tested for years and years and I think it's really come into its own in the last year or so with Norm at the helm. Not sure how he ever has time to sleep.
I can't believe Microsoft has not address the common issues with the Surface Pen that people are complaining about for their Surface tablets. Wasted opportunity.
It's a problem that appeared in SP3, SP4 and now they have brought it over to the Surface Studio. With so much resources, Microsoft probably could have done something about it.
The Surface Pen is pretty good, though. It just isn't as good as Wacom pens or the iPad Pencil. Doesn't have to be. It's still very nice for producing artwork. I own several Wacom products, but it doesn't seem to stop me from liking the Surface Pro 4 pen. As others have said, they'll improve the pen in time.
those issue's mention here were due to low battery in the pen, replacing the battery fixes the problem with the touching before touching problem and then takes full advantage of the pressure sensitivity. Though i think they did do an update sow when the pen is too low now, rather than doing that, it just stops working, so you know you need to replace the battery.
I'm disappointed to hear about the shortcomings of the pen. This would have been a digital artist's dream machine, but alas, Microsoft needs to up their game if they want to take on Wacom. The pen itself also needs to be more ergonomic for use over long periods.
Looks beautiful. This seems like an amazing product for anyone who needs digitizer/touch ability. Buying it seems like a no-brainer when you see artists drawing in photoshop. However, when you switch over to playing games or using Premier, the touch ability kinda seems useless. I suppose the value of this computer comes down to the specific needs of the user. Good review.
"Buying it seems like a no-brainer when you see artists drawing in photoshop" You watched the review? Both real artists that use a cintiq didnt like it - deal breaker
Science Leponi not at all in a project, keyboard is still the way to go..way more comfortable(with shortcuts) and precise..i have used a touchscreen for editing and i am not a fan
This is by far the best review of the Studio I've seen. Informative, balanced and, hey, you even employed artist to test it too! Well done, Norm. Wish I could afford it though!!
If they only sold the screen, it wouldn't compete with the iMac. And compared the Studio as-is, a similarly spec'd iMac is about $900 less (comparing to the high-end model in this video). Granted, that iMac won't have touch and a pen, so you have to ask yourself if that's worth $900 more.
Of course it's worth the price, the pen and touch alone is worth way more than 900 bucks, especially when you compare it to the Wacom comparable Cintiqs. And they could obviously have room for both the AIO model as well the screen display standalone. This product not only dunks on Wacom and Apple in features and specs but also in price, for what you get. Obviously, if you don't need the pen and touch, you may not need the Surface Studio, then you might as well, get/build a normal desktop rig, because lets face it the iMacs aren't worth the prices, and never were to begin with.
Mmm...but with the iMac, you ARE getting a 5K screen, so there's a similar situation as with the Surface Studio where you're getting sort of included value. Building a PC defeats the point of someone wanting 2-in-1, which is a valid desire.
Awesome review, much higher standard than previous Tested reviews... I almost feel like I want to review this review. Nice easy to follow structure, dynamic camera angles and editing to keep me interested, and bringing in artists to offer opinions on a product for artists is a brilliant idea. Hope to see more content like this from Tested in the future.
It's been a while since I've seen a Tested video (probably over a year) and I just wanted to point out that Norman has come a long way in his stage persona and how he handles himself on camera. Great job Norman.
Jay Y "hunched over" being the key phrase. This device seems to promote terrible posture in its "canvas" orientation. However, artists have never really been know for their good posture, so I don't see it being a huge issue for the industry.
There is no standardised human heights nor working desk. Thats where this device (and pretty much any pcs, all in one touchscreen) is limited of its capability despite its hinge being flexible and more adjustable than ever. So in comes desks with adjustable heights to accompany even more flexible, comfortable , adjustable as needed viewing/writing/working position and I do recommend adjustable seats for this beast of a workstation as well. For such a big (and expensive) devices, I am sure professional users can afford one in their home/office/studio or already have one due to their job anyway which requires staring at monitor(s) long hours or else build custom one if they can do so in their studio.
@sample text : you don't know what you're talking about, we learn at school good posutre. and actually for work, it has been proven that standing might be better than sitting on a chair. also you can just stand, but you need be focused on your drawing, so it depends how you draw, painters will usually be really straight, will drawers will hunch over more.
At first, I thought that those 12:44 minutes was too long for what I was expecting to hear... but I found out that this is one of the best unbiased reviews I have watched so far. I wish that all those hardcore Apple fans would do their reviews the same way. Thank you.
lol? this is an overpriced computer and its consumer target is really confusing. its for digital artists only and yet not good enough for professional digital artists. sell rates will be very very low with this one. the only good thing is that it might push apple to up their game from now, but this studio wont sell.
not exatcly, pro wacom are a bit like pro apple, i have a cintiq but not a cintiq addict so i think i might actually use my pen more because of the size of that shit and the global interactive process. Also I know a lot of pro illistrator who already went over with the surface pro, so there s a chance the ll get half of us actually in many fields (graphic design, illustration, animation, contemporary art, 3d design, scultpure, music, video, etc...) I mean think of it, touching all the menu, i might not use my keyboard anymore, no matter if its Ps, Ai, Id, and also for Pr and Ae. But the button thing on the pen is annoying, and the dial should be thought well with all those app, they are actually talking about it with adobe from what i've heard. they did forgot about lefties and that's really annoying... for lefties like me..
Apple user since I started using computers as a Graphic designer. Always used a Wacom then got a Cintiq 13' - then 22'. Great Tablets but ended up going back to my Intuos and not Intuos Pro 3 is touch - wireless so could draw anywhere TV (couch) Then iPhone release everybody had one. No need for iPhone. Then Started using Microsoft and a simple spec PC after my Apple PowerMac G5 stopped letting me upgrade the Browser even Software and it was working perfectly. seeing all software I use looks the same in both systems, the cost in a high end PC vs Mac was so different. Microsoft released the surface and brought the Pro 2 and was in love with it my function and the way Microsoft had made its front end feel more fun to work with. Being touch and Pen friendly made it a dream. With the upgrades of the Surface Pro 3 - 4 simply amazing and I try to explain this is all you need if you want a tablet - its a tablet. KEY is that having a full PC is the hardest part to explain, so just happy using and talking with other users who have only great things to say. Seeing the Surface studio has got me planning my next upgrade. And I normally don't change my mind when I seen the best. Everytime I see a user with an iBook at a cafe I keep thinking if only they knew what life would be like using a better tool?
Insane review, and insane device. Good job! Really professional, and always interesting at every moment instead of talking for too long about a single feature.
With Wacom? But all Microsoft products are using N-Trig tech, which isn't at all Wacom compatible. Why would Wacom work with MS to make a better N-Trig pen?
it does have a right click on the side which is customizable. It has 2 different eraser clicks that are also customizable. You basically have a 3 button mouse with the pen, 4 if you count pushing app onscreen buttons with the pen tip.
LOVE that you brought in professional artists to give their input - the amount of tech writers scribbling over pre-drawn artwork on reviews for the Surface Studio and Apple Pencil is nauseating.
Claiming that it's game changing for people that make money from their art when the professional artist says the pens problems make it a deal breaker .... ?
IIRC he said a "potential" deal breaker......and it's not like MS can't tweak that programmatically so the "draw" doesn't start until the pen is actually in contact with the surface.
I've been hoping to buy a Surface or similar device for decades. Everything seems to fall short of my expectations. In Microsoft's case, they have struggled to deliver on the nTrig stylus. Even the Wacom variant had unresolved stylus problems. I'll think it's likely that I'll be waiting for a few more product cycles before I get the computer of my dreams. If not for the pen issues, then due to a lack of horsepower.
I like how you bring in real professional digital artists, they see things that regular users would not notice, and they are the target for this machine. I wish more reviewers would provide this level of insight and humility (instead of the reviewer assuming they know how to test everything in-depth).
This is what any review should aspire to be like. Absolutely sublime. Completely unbiased, while still throwing in your own opinions. Realising who the product was intended for, and brought in people from that group to properly test it, and then share their thoughts in a neutral way. Great work.
Great video so thanks for posting. You are the first reviewer (to my knowledge) to actually mention this device as a Windows computer. You also clearly explained the rationale behind the aspect ratio. Heck, not even Microsoft thought to mention this in their product release vids. I have some physical limitations whereby this device may be beneficial versus other options, including the iMac. I've been using Apple products since 1983, and I still enjoy the iPhone and Apple Watch. However, when it comes to computers, it's pretty clear to me that Apple has thrown in the towel. I'm tempted to buy this thing' because of it's near Mac-like' build quality and innovation that Apple used to be famous for.
Jason Evans As I noted elsewhere, MS wants some of the high-end market that Apple and Wacom have enjoyed for so long. I think Wacom's new 16" Mobile Studio tablet computer is a great example. $2,400 for the Mobile makes the Surface Studio (with a 28" screen!) look more affordable. BTW: For graphics people, the Wacom computer above has 282 ppi, making it the highest res system out there. Should almost look like a piece of paper on the screen. If only I were younger--and richer! lol
BTW: Apple is still the dark horse in the race for "studio" supremacy. Although MacOS doesn't have touch capability built-in, they can *_still_* take advantage of Touch for running apps. I only mention this because of all the good things I've heard and read about the iPad Pro and Apple Pencil being such an excellent drawing experience.
I wonder if the oil from your fingers actually makes it smoother though. Sometimes when I use clean touch screens my fingers catch instead of slide so I have to use my knuckles. Maybe I'm just a weirdo though.
Jamieprov I just bought a new laptop that has a touch screen and I'm using it right now. I can think of no purpose for it (because it's awkward to reach across a keyboard to touch small buttons) and it actually makes the screen have a very poor viewing angle. I'd recommend never getting a touch screen on a laptop unless you can fold the laptop over and use it as a tablet or something.
Norm I usually hate lot of stuff you do, but here bringing the artist and express their opinions was nice touch and this is nice professional review, not just lame first looks / unboxing crap. Left hand and right hand aproach, really well executed video, this will be first Tested video I will like. Really showing what it is good and bad, not just biased hype.
Found the same issues as the artists who tried it out in video. My first experience was at a Microsoft store, the only drawing apps installed was a basic mobile drawing app. Not the best first impression when your only trial software is meant for finger drawing.
Nice review. I particularly liked the input from the artists and liked that part about how the pen registers before touching the screen. I'm not a professional artist, but I think that that's the kind of thing that would bother me too in a digital drawing tool. Hopefully it's something that can be fixed by software. Also, as a small piece of (hopefully constructive) criticism, may I suggest that you please clean any chrome surfaces of smudges and finger prints before shooting? At 0:50, the finger prints on the chrome arms were very noticeable.
* Why is this the ONLY video that shows the pen making marks without actually touching the screen? Why did I not have the same problem when I tried it in a Microsoft Store? * THIS IS THE ONLY REVIEWER THAT HAD THIS PROBLEM!
lorddarphyve the time for them to develop and produce it takes a long time. They started making this product before pascal was out so they used maxwell. They will add a pascal version and Kabylake to new versions down the line.
Why is everyone asking why doesn't this have kaby lake, why doesn't that have kaby lake? Do you guys not know that intel has only 6 kaby lake parts out currently, 3 15W and 3 4.5W parts and none have iris graphics nor are quad core. Blame intel not the manufacturers.
As for the pen click adjustability, Autohotkey can adjust the #F20, #F19, and #F18 for the pen's top button (one click, double click, and long click respectively) except the side button its pretty hard to detect that one (I adjust mine and find the side button actually was detected as a right click button on mouse but it isnt the same keyname) for pretty much any other software's shortcut.
+Hold Fast Shure, see your point. But for me personally i'm much more interested in this than I am in anything apple has done in the last 4 years, sure the things you said are true, but this offers a real advantage that the imac never did.
Anyone here use the Microsoft Surface? What do you think?

Getting this for solitaire
Nice bro
Apple would have this in 2025 on their new screens but the dial would cost an extra $456
apple calls innovation the lack of sd card slot on their new overpriced macbook pros...
Josh Smith you can buy two 5k Macs with the price of that.
and if you think it is good for your back you can add a transparent touch layer and they will be the same, well not have the issues the pros mentioned (I made one in 2012)

Xaqq DeRipper Seriously. Been looking for a review that ACTUALLY goes in-depth with THE MOST PROMINENTLY ADVERTISED ASPECT of this actuql product.
They will stick to their HD cintiqs. Maybe the next gen will get it right.
so i only imagined hearing them wishing that the pen had a right click feature and that the screen detects input a bit too early?
they should collab with Wacom, because then it will be perfection
they actually are for the next version :)
leon scott seriously? that's great news
They already did with the Surface Pro 2.
Where did you saw that Leon Scott ?
This will be a game changer for me, and i will wait for the wacom version.
Imagine if these were sold as screens, as well as all in ones. You can hook one, perhaps two, or even more, to your pc and have an amazing experience!
Theyll prbably release a screen only verison when they release the pro 5.But then again, this pc IS pretty mcuh all about the screen so...
how would you seriously handle two of these screens?
Imagine two of those in an Oculus Rift.
Neumah your eyes burning
I would totally spend a thousand dollars on this, even though i'm not an artist. It looks so pleasant to use, and 3:2 is amazing for browsing
The reason the ports are in the back is because when the screen is all the way down you can't access them...
Because of the hinges...
They could place some ports in the sides of the screen..
maybe integrated into the monitor edge, although their quest for paper thing displays would be ruined.
IAmAgainst the hinge blocks out all ports when the screen is lowered at the sides.

Now this is a review...Thanks for taking the time to share your findings..
They really need to sell the screen separately so I can connect it to my existing rig.
I believe Dell's version coming out next year will do that!
Agreed i would love to use this as a screen on its own.
wacom may be your only answer
They want you to buy the weaker attached PC so you'll be force to upgrade every 2 years
very possible they did that to keep the cost down. Anyway, it is not for gamers. I am sure gaming manufactures will bring similar products seeing the demand.
the thing that the pen draw before touching the screen is a bug. just remove the battery from it once and it will work fine.
Yea I've had this happen on very rare occasions. the battery trick fixes it. TBH it's happened once or twice in my two years with a Surface so it's by no means a big issue. Wasn't good form reviewing the pen while it was bugged out though.
In my case, when that happened, with my SP4, it was a sign of battery running out. Changed the battery and never have happened again.
On a computer that doesn't have a battery?
Do we know how much pressure sensitivity is supported?
Alexander Raptakis
1024 levels.
Taking the professionalism and production value to a new level here. Very very well written and produced review.
Good review, particularly the segment with the artists.
It really annoys me how little RAM they include at the lower price point, and how expensive it is just to get more RAM in the thing. Photoshop is a RAM guzzler and in a computer designed for Photoshop and other Adobe products having an 8GB model at all is a complete waste.
Thats why it's called an entry model.
James Fielding companies will not care about the $1500 price difference that much if it increase their designers production
It's a clear example of companies taking on Apple bullshit
Looks like an Apple product to me.
Not even close, imac is a fisher price kids toy vs this beast.
It is SO frustrating coming from wacom
1. no hover-right click, dealbreaker for most 3D apps like zbrush, 3ds max (software)
2. the button is hella hard to press! pair with problem #1 and you get tendinitis (pen design)
3. only one button, Wacoms 2 button index/thumb rocker is SUPERIOR (pen design)
4. zig-zag wiggles when drawing diagonals slowly. Makes drawing circles look bad. (surface hardware)
Otherthen these things I love my surfacebook it could have been the best ever. But these 4 dumb flaws make drawing frustrating, I have owned my surface book for 6 months
Scott Vigil Ever tried Lazy Nezumi for the wiggle line problem?
Yea, it helps. I use something similar, at slower speeds it still shows up unless you have the averaging set super high. but then the cursor is less responsive.
i actually really prefer it! but it truly depends on personal preference and what exactly and how you are making your art

"Stupid thin, stupid big, crazy gorgeous." .. def legit, k sold.
BEST COMPUTER REVIEW. U earned a subscription.🙌💯✌
Tested is now on-time when it comes to reviews. Good job!
Yea even if it is just for the OS you like, microsoft products bring way more power for a way smaler price and you still can install mac os on it
THANK YOU for inviting artists to test this and providing an objective insight on the pen capability
Getting this for my home music studio :D
Have fun, dude :D
.. for 3k you could create a pc that specifically design for your needs.
but can it run crysus
Nothing can run crisis
It can run chrysler
That was an excellent review, very in depth on the pros and cons of the machine. One of the best reviews of this machine I've seen so far. Great job Tested!
I would definitely buy the screen if it was sold as just a screen. I don't need the computer bit, I already have a desktop.
Phillip Parr You should buy a 25" HP monitor with touch screen. It's a little ugly and it has only 1920x1080 resolution tho.
0:52
Ted I have a 28" 4K monitor. If it were touchscreen it'd be perfect. 1080p monitors look fuzzy to me now. :(
fallenentity2 Have you seen one though? They're butt ugly, and not 4K.
My beautiful and amazing mistress Your point?
This guy is a great reviewer, like seeing him check if the hinges move when doing simple pushes was really helpful to see. Thanks!
6:07 is that Hamilton artwork...?
Austin Nwachukwu hahaha I thought I was the only noticed it.
Just admit it and fix it, that is the least they could do for a product that could be a classic.
and then offer the screen as a screen only option! And possibly in a 30-34" variant! :)
Yeah they could fix the problems but they just decided to include them instead........... /s
the upcoming "creative update" specifically addresses all these issues regarding the surface lineup and extra features for artists.
There is no problem. Just a problem with this reviewer's pen.
It's not a deal breaker. When this happens the pen needs one of 2 things. Pull out the battery or reseat the pen tip.
Wasted opportunity.
hoping they release a new version of it which supports tilt, more levels of pressure, and less lag.
Why?
This is one of the best reviews for this product on UA-cam. Thanks for sharing.
I'm disappointed to hear about the shortcomings of the pen. This would have been a digital artist's dream machine, but alas, Microsoft needs to up their game if they want to take on Wacom. The pen itself also needs to be more ergonomic for use over long periods.
Wow great job actually getting artists to test it out for the review. Really appreciated.
Premier is nice with touch screens, you can cut and drag segments with your fingers. Which does speed up world flow.
"Buying it seems like a no-brainer when you see artists drawing in photoshop"
You watched the review? Both real artists that use a cintiq didnt like it - deal breaker
Science Leponi not at all in a project, keyboard is still the way to go..way more comfortable(with shortcuts) and precise..i have used a touchscreen for editing and i am not a fan
malik bagwala I used an old wacom and it worked fine, and it doesn't replace the keyboard, just the mouse =P
Science Leponi you can actually keep your mouse aside if you practice enough.. keyboard can help you edit way faster
by far the best review i have seen on this channel to date, kudos guys !
There is a right click button on the pen if you look at the strip where the magnate is there is a little button right there that is a right click
Best computer review I've seen in a while ! Excellent job, Norm.
Mom, I want this.
Hey Norm, this was a really well produced review!
THANK YOU for having professional artists test this! That makes this review actually valuable unlike some others.
Awesome that you asked real artists.
This is by far the best review of the Studio I've seen. Informative, balanced and, hey, you even employed artist to test it too!
Well done, Norm.
Wish I could afford it though!!
I hope they end up selling the screen separately, would be a giant competitor to Wacom, and utterly destroys the iMac.
Building a PC defeats the point of someone wanting 2-in-1, which is a valid desire.
zycane 🤮
Awesome review, much higher standard than previous Tested reviews... I almost feel like I want to review this review. Nice easy to follow structure, dynamic camera angles and editing to keep me interested, and bringing in artists to offer opinions on a product for artists is a brilliant idea. Hope to see more content like this from Tested in the future.
Reminds me of the Sunflower iMac from 2002.
Great and honest review, not just talking about the amazing design but providing true useful indepth experience.
A fair and balance review. Thanks.
Excellent review. I love how you guys got professionals who use this kind of thing daily to come in and provide feedback
They were professional actors, not professional artists.
I need this....
It's been a while since I've seen a Tested video (probably over a year) and I just wanted to point out that Norman has come a long way in his stage persona and how he handles himself on camera. Great job Norman.
For all the bonus points, you guys should zip all the new Surface Studio wallpapers and upload them :P
You have been doing an angel,s job to share news related to the latest technology for artists.
I notice a lot of people demonstrating this machine are standing up. hunched over it. That's a problem in the workplace.
Contrary. Working standing up is far better for your health.
Then use it sitting down. Problem solved.
Thank you.
Oh Microsoft, do release this as a display/digitizer only.
thank you so much for having art professionals test it and give their opinion!!
RIP Apple
Btw, I think this was a great review.
if only :/ you would think they would innovate but no :(
lol? this is an overpriced computer and its consumer target is really confusing. its for digital artists only and yet not good enough for professional digital artists. sell rates will be very very low with this one. the only good thing is that it might push apple to up their game from now, but this studio wont sell.
SweBass Yea but the 5k iMac is also competing for the same spot so I hope it makes apple innovate for the first time in a long time.
not exatcly, pro wacom are a bit like pro apple,
i have a cintiq but not a cintiq addict so i think i might actually use my pen more because of the size of that shit and the global interactive process.
Saw one today at Microsoft Store and was stunned at how gorgeous it is. Thanks for the excellent review!
Wow, another channel I watch just put out this video at nearly the exact same time (10-20 second difference)
NDA probably lifted
MrAntieMatter yep that often happens
MrAntieMatter it's normal with tech channels.
Everytime I see a user with an iBook at a cafe I keep thinking if only they knew what life would be like using a better tool?
can I have a link for the wallpaper
Insane review, and insane device. Good job! Really professional, and always interesting at every moment instead of talking for too long about a single feature.
the single button on the surface pen is pretty much a deal breaker for any 3D artist used to having a middle click and right click for navigation
Don't worry they're working together with Wacom for a new pen
That was announced in March, what happened to it?
With Wacom? But all Microsoft products are using N-Trig tech, which isn't at all Wacom compatible. Why would Wacom work with MS to make a better N-Trig pen?
Very complete, one of the best reviews youve done!
Hope the next gen Surface Pen provides a right click button
I like that it hides away from you. :)
Microsoft have agreed a pen standard with Wacom that comes into effect in December. I'm hoping they'll release an updated pen then.
it does have a right click on the side which is customizable. It has 2 different eraser clicks that are also customizable.
You basically have a 3 button mouse with the pen, 4 if you count pushing app onscreen buttons with the pen tip.
THAT PFP GOT ME
LOVE that you brought in professional artists to give their input - the amount of tech writers scribbling over pre-drawn artwork on reviews for the Surface Studio and Apple Pencil is nauseating.
Claiming that it's game changing for people that make money from their art when the professional artist says the pens problems make it a deal breaker .... ?
Otherwise, thanks for the in depth review!
the pen drawing before touching is just a bug, can be fixed by removing and putting back the battery.
> IIRC he said a "potential" deal breaker...
No he didn't.
I like how you bring in real professional digital artists, they see things that regular users would not notice, and they are the target for this machine. I wish more reviewers would provide this level of insight and humility (instead of the reviewer assuming they know how to test everything in-depth).
Can you use the Surface Dial as a paddle controller for playing emulated old arcade games?
Anders Öhlund nope
If the devs of the emulator allow, then yes!
Nope
I am sure someone will eventually hack it to do that and more much like they did for the wiimote/sensor bar and Kinect.
The answer to the question is nope
This is what any review should aspire to be like. Absolutely sublime. Completely unbiased, while still throwing in your own opinions. Realising who the product was intended for, and brought in people from that group to properly test it, and then share their thoughts in a neutral way. Great work.
Omfg I never thought I would say this but it's worth its price.
I'm tempted to buy this thing' because of it's near Mac-like' build quality and innovation that Apple used to be famous for.
i enjoyed the professionals reactions
Excellent review! I really appreciate you bringing in professional artists to test it out.
Microsoft would make so much money if they start offering just a monitor
*_IF_* they improved the pen, no doubt.
No doubt - but they make far MORE money by making you buy the PC component WITH it - hence why they would be hesitant to sell it separately!
Finally a proper review for artists that are used to work on similar surfaces!
thank you
I think if someone were to invent a practical way for touch screens to self-clean, they'd probably make a lot of money. :)
I wonder if the oil from your fingers actually makes it smoother though. Sometimes when I use clean touch screens my fingers catch instead of slide so I have to use my knuckles. Maybe I'm just a weirdo though.
You're not. Touch screens are actually pretty terrible when they stick to your finger.
Yeah, that's what makes me not want a touchscreen computer. The fingerprints on my phone and tablet bother me enough already.
use gloves hahah
The blue screen of death must look beautiful on that thing! lol!
Found the same issues as the artists who tried it out in video. My first experience was at a Microsoft store, the only drawing apps installed was a basic mobile drawing app. Not the best first impression when your only trial software is meant for finger drawing.
Sell the screen separately. Then no one has to own the shitty box with old processors slow USB ports.
Cintiq 27QHD....
***** USB 3.0 is too slow for many professionals. Ask anyone using thunderbolt, USB 3.1, etc. Also, I don't think you quite understand what type c is.
I've never ever heard anyone complain about the slowness of USB 3.0
Jollo Jakar so basically a Cintiq XD
Nice review. I particularly liked the input from the artists and liked that part about how the pen registers before touching the screen. I'm not a professional artist, but I think that that's the kind of thing that would bother me too in a digital drawing tool. Hopefully it's something that can be fixed by software.
Also, as a small piece of (hopefully constructive) criticism, may I suggest that you please clean any chrome surfaces of smudges and finger prints before shooting? At 0:50, the finger prints on the chrome arms were very noticeable.
But these guys are flat wrong! It doesn't register until the pen actually touches the screen.
* Why is this the ONLY video that shows the pen making marks without actually touching the screen? Why did I not have the same problem when I tried it in a Microsoft Store?
* THIS IS THE ONLY REVIEWER THAT HAD THIS PROBLEM!
I really want to know why there's not 10 series nvidia graphics.
lorddarphyve Artists don't use Titan X or 10th series to run Adobe Photoshop
They produce too much heat for the tiny chassis.
If that were true, they wouldn't work in laptops. For the first time every, the Nvidia Desktop and Laptop GPUs are the same chip.
lorddarphyve the time for them to develop and produce it takes a long time. They started making this product before pascal was out so they used maxwell. They will add a pascal version and Kabylake to new versions down the line.
If that were true then laptop manufactures wouldn't have been able to beat them to market.
I have been using this nonstop for a couple days and its wonderful
Why is everyone asking why doesn't this have kaby lake, why doesn't that have kaby lake? Do you guys not know that intel has only 6 kaby lake parts out currently, 3 15W and 3 4.5W parts and none have iris graphics nor are quad core. Blame intel not the manufacturers.
As for the pen click adjustability, Autohotkey can adjust the #F20, #F19, and #F18 for the pen's top button (one click, double click, and long click respectively) except the side button its pretty hard to detect that one (I adjust mine and find the side button actually was detected as a right click button on mouse but it isnt the same keyname)
for pretty much any other software's shortcut.
I wonder if Apple haters are going to be bitching about same things on this that they hate when Apple does it ...
what part of this has apple done, apart from beautiful design?
Rezalty Price, non-upgradable, specs, form over function etc. You know, typical stuff people hate about Apple.
+Hold Fast Shure, see your point. But for me personally i'm much more interested in this than I am in anything apple has done in the last 4 years, sure the things you said are true, but this offers a real advantage that the imac never did.
Yes.
Rezalty to be fair, a lot of Apple's designs were inspired by Dieter Rams' designs for Braun products in the 1960's.
The buttons and the pressure sensitivity of the pen can be customized in the Surface app that you can download from the store.
Microsoft has really pulled up their socks this year.
