      Aftermarket batteries are hit and miss. If you luck out and get a set with good cells, they should last you as long as an OEM battery, but it’s literally a lottery for that.

    I've seen reviews where other people experienced the same issues with the battery showing a partial charge while the charger shows full. Some of the reviewers found out that they had to force the battery into the charger another 1/16" to get it to properly seat and charge correctly...

    Hey, thanks for the followup. Your "real world tests" are really good keep it up !!! Oh on your Dewalt package kit I have one of the "older XPR 18-volt packages". It was a company longevity gift (30 years) and I imagine that DeWalt markets them for just the sort of thing. Just saying. If you were closer I'd hire you for my home projects in a heartbeat. Keep up the excellent work.

    I use to be a Panasonic 15.6 volt tool user and in my book they beat everything out there including Makita! But all great things don't last forever. When my Panasonic tools and batteries died, replacements in the 18v line were too expensive and hard to find. After watching many videos and reviews, the Dewalt 20v line seemed like the logical choice. I'm not sure when the 20v max line started but that is what I went with. That was about 5 years ago and I now have 9 tools including the hedge trimmer and string trimmer both 20v. My first kit was a drill and driver with 2, 1.5ah batteries. The manufacture date stamp on the batteries is 2014 and they still work great for small projects. The toughness and run time of the Dewalt tools seems to rival my old Panasonic line and then some! So far I have not had any reason to regret my decision and will keep buying Dewalt tools and batteries!!!

    I had a relatively new dewalt 18v hammer drill fall off the ladder from the second floor to the blacktop driveway. The motor survived, however, it split two ways at the battery clip due to the heft of the batter itself. Not usable.

    Out of 8 generics I had similar issue with only one 4ah bat. It only displayed 2 bars when fully charged. The thing I’ve noticed, it gave me same run time as “fully functioning” ones.I just replaced the board within the 🔋 with another from a Chinese diy kit (body + board type)and now it shows 3 bars. Therefore, the problem is unlikely to be associated with cells…I’ve been using them for nearly 2 years now with wide variety of tools on daily basis , no problems there and the only bat’s I am not willing to buy from generics are flexvolt ones…

    I just want to endorse your point on the durability of that drill you are showing. I accidentally drove my pickup truck (Navarra) over mine only realized when I heard the tool motor running. I got out ran arround the truck and saw it under the wheel. Got back in and moved the truck off of it. Long story short, that was nearly 2 years ago and the tool is still running strong.

    Tools are meant to be used, but not abused. There's "using" tools, and being careless with tools. You don't have to handle them like a neanderthal to give them a hot supper. Look at the tools from 100 years ago. People took care of them and they lasted. I mean, they are yours to do with as you will...but care goes a long way in longevity my friend. :)

    So it either got ran too low or the blower was too heavy of a load. Also, I understand using the tools, and not being careful with them, but i still don't need to slam them down unnecessarily. I put them down just regular. If I went to get something to eat at a restaurant and the waitress slammed my plate down it like that I would think that she had a shit attitude

    The problem was that it discharged too far, and the circuitry locks it out for safety. I had this happen to a genuine flexvolt battery, and dewalt replaced it.

    I've got several of the "Amazon" batteries and each them perform as well as the DeWalt batteries that I have. After the latest hurricane passed through the area, I had the problem of having to remove a few felled trees. However before I could start on the trees I had to clear the area of wild bushes and vines just to get to the trees. Fortunately I had just recently purchased a DeWalt trimmer/clipper and two 5 A/h "Amazon" batteries. I was amazed at how well the Clipper and the batteries performed so I think Sean just got a one off bad battery. BTW, the two "Amazon" batteries I used on the trimmer/clipper are grey in colour. The other "Amazon" batteries that I have look like the ones in the video.

    I don't know if you tried this, but one of my dewalt batteries would only charge to one bar like your knock off battery after I used it on my Dewalt line trimmer. I found a UA-cam video where you get another battery that's similar and put jump wires to the two batteries positive to positive and negative to negative for a few seconds and then charged the bad battery and it came back to life.

    I bought the same knock off battery in a two pack because they were so cheap. The fuel gauge indicator only showed one bar even after charging overnight and the charger indicated it was fully charged. I tested it in a 1/2" impact and it lasted Ok for the first charge. I deep discharged it using a 20v 7 1/4" saw a few times and it started to show all three indicators when it recharged. I also would not recommend these ones, but they seem to be working, for now.

  • @SianaGearz
    @SianaGearz 7 років тому +3

    One of the cells likely blew its pressure switch, that would result in the behaviour you describe. Either they used cells that aren't rated for the current that the tool you ran them in demands of them, or you simply got one with a latent defect, which can happen with anything you could possibly buy, but is certainly more likely when the manufacturer uses licensed cells rather than originals from the 5 tier-1 companies.
    Why i say it's not unlikely that they used the entirely wrong cells, is because there is actually a difference between 5A laptop cells and 10A-20A power tool cells, the latter don't get nearly the same capacity as the laptop cells, but they are more electrically resilient. They're built in the same form factor, so a less scrupulous reseller will order his batteries to be built out of laptop cells so people take the bait of high capacity, and then many people likely won't bother returning them or will not use them long enough to run into issues, so i suggest you try your best to get a refund to discourage such behaviour.

    Hey Sean just a bit of info if it helps you mention buying another set of Dewalts, I like you buy tools to use them I own 2 Dewalts and 3 Black & Decker (yes i know there the same) what im getting at is I like you have the new Lithium stuff but i also have 10+ old 18 volt of both and I found a conversion kit to make the old NI-CADS into Lithium batteries for 100 bucks with 2 bats , charger, and 1 adapter, (you can buy the adapts cheap for like 2 for 25 if look long enough) but what I am getting at is like you I am a Mechanic and Cattle Farmer more so now so I use stuff hard and they best last.
    Ok as I said I planned to buy new Dewalts to replace some or give to a couple of my new guys to keep in their trucks who help me on the ranch but then I found the KIT Dewalt DCA2203 its 99.00 on amazon now! as i said i took 10 tools , jigsaws, sawzalls, circular saw, extend a tool limb trimmer and converted all for 300 bucks with 3 packs and the 40 for 4 more adapters the smaller batteries are only 2ah i will say but i dont need long run times most of my stuff is quick bursts and all my trucks have Inverters and Generators on them so if need be we can recharge anything out on ranch..... Like you i hate to waste Money so NOW what i do and tell my kids if they drive by a yard sale stop and look for the old 18 volt Ni-cads tools most times ppl almost give them away we now have 18 with 5 actually given to me i felt bad because he was going to buy new ones so I showed him what i did he never knew they made the kits but told me to keep tools because he had already re-brushed them once and knew they would need again in a year and didn't want to mess with so i got complete knowledge of tools history and made a Friend of sorts he comes by ranch once a while and we drink some shine when his wife is away.
    OH yeah on the tool and breakage we had one of our Black n Decker fall 45 feet out of a tree and 0 damage other than shit stuck in the Exhaust port where the Fan blows out the hot air when running, We have also had a full BRAND NEW in the dam BOX still fall off the back of one of my Stock trailers (11 foot 3 inches and they fell onto Cement at the AG Weighing Scales for livestock) the only damage was to the case it broke the side of the box they were sold in but the tools did not have even dirt on them! so yeah if your NOT dropping a tool at least once then your only using them to show your friends some one told you what brand to buy !!! .... only saw the 2 Videos but I subbed and ill check back on some others of yours when i get some time in the truck out in pasture.......now thats shit we drop and People LOOSE their MINDS OVER LAPTOPS... we drop them once a month and brush em off and work just fine... Im guessing those afraid to handle a tool for fear of dropping one are Crapple Cell Phone users too!! Keep Up the great work young man!!! Cow }:-o) or Bobby

    I bought a few of these "generic" Dewalt batterys. None last more then a month or two. I still have a Dewalt battery from 2015 and it is the end of 2022 still working great.I already just changed the plastic case as it outlasted that. Plus Dewalt's are warrentied for 3 years which I have used that.
    I have many other Dewalt battery's over 2-3 years working almost as new. I do many use Dewalt brand charges too. These generic batterys you never really know who is making them as it can vary as never are branded.

    Hey Sean, good video. Question, do you think it has to do with over/under discharge protection? I know the dewalt tools are supposed to have this built in, but is it possible that it only protects it for genuine batteries? without this protection if a battery completely discharges, its ruined and will not charge again. Perhaps if you depleted the 3rd party battery by say 80%, and then charged it it would last longer instead of running it to 0%.

      Sean Carlin Designs I saw someone else do it and they had to hook up the balance wires too so I know it works, but this cheap battery has been working so well I don't have the heart to destroy it just yet lol

    Agreed man I am a contractor and have been using my dewalt drills and drivers for about 7 years now and I constantly drop them off of my belt while Standing on my little giant ladder. Heck my 12v dewalts are still running strong even after dropping one in a toilet haha

    Those generic batteries probably don't have matched capacity cells, when you run them all the way down you end up reverse charging the lower capacity cell if in series. This damages them by releasing oxygen from the lithium cobalt oxide. And they don't have the same low voltage cutoff, meaning they'll run longer for a short time and degrade very fast.

    0:53 I know tools are meant to be used and meant to be able to take abuse but I couldn’t help but feel it in my gut each time you dropped the drill purposely like that.

      Tools are meant to take the occasional accidental abuse. But to just toss them around without a care in the world when you can simply set them down is stupid. Why tempt fate or just add to any potential of damage when its completely unnecessary. I agree with you.

    Ive had those same batteries for two years never had a issue with them charging granted they don't last as long but i can get three of them for the price of one dewalt that makes financial sense to me you keep two charged while you use one

    Tools are made to take abuse but unfortunately the modern tools have more and more circuit boards inside them. Constant dropping will weaken solder joints leading to failure.

    • @seancarlindesigns1431
      @seancarlindesigns1431  7 років тому +6

      vibration from use would have more impact on joints than dropping

    • @theopiner402
      @theopiner402 7 років тому +6

      I agree, unnecessarily banging things around is just foolish. Dropping and plopping tools doesn't make you more manly, or the tool tougher. All it does is invite premature failure. Yes, slamming the tools has a greater impact on solder joints that the vibrations from general use.

      you do it your way and let him do it his, i feel like it can be unnecessary how some people throw them around but i typically drop a tool from waste height rather than bending over if im working in a grassy area, wouldnt do that over asphalt though
      maybe he feels the time saved from dropping it adds up to the value of any early failures... ntm you get 3-5 years of warranty on those boards depending if youre team yellow or team red

      Doubt he would buy a brand new tool and just chuck them around, people on other channels try and make out that Dewalt is junk and always breaks, I think he’s making the point that it’s not the case.

    I completely agree with buying quality tools. I too use Dewalt products. They haven't let me down yet for nearly 20 years. I have used but never owned other brands like Makita and Milwaukee and like them too. They also come with a better warranty than Dewalt (currently) but with Dewalt I've never needed a warranty. Many guys I've worked with and for have had to get there prestigious Milwaukee products fixed or replaced. Not bad mouthing the other brands because I do think they make good stuff but personally I'll stick with Dewalt for now.

    The problem you had may have been your own doing. Got this from the DeWalt website:"
    1. IS IT BETTER FOR DEWALT® BATTERIES TO BE COMPLETELY DISCHARGED BEFORE CHARGING?
    No. Just the opposite. You should stop using a battery as soon as you feel a substantial decrease in power from the tool. Completely running down a battery may damage it. Do not tape the trigger to run down the battery."
