- Batteries tested: Milwaukee 2 AH vs 12 AH, Dewalt and Makita. Battery performance compared in impact driver (low current), hammer drill (low/medium current), reciprocating saw (high current), and air blower (very high current). I'd like to suggest a comparison between different cooking pans based on the material (Regular Iron, Teflon Coated and Ceramic coated) and test their durability and heat resistance.

Yes I know he tested generic batteries before but I am talking about comparing for example brand name 4Ah vs Generic 4Ah for ability to drive huge lag screws and measure the difference. As thorough as he is when is testing/making the product comparison videos I really doubt he would have time for another channel, but I do agree with you it would be cool to see what you mentioned.

Plot twist: all the results are purely fabricated. He doesn't actually do any of these tests.
But seriously the work that goes into these is tremendous. To come up with an idea, and then a test idea, build the test apparatus, then go through the test and come up with a conclusion is amazing.

There is a channel called "Torque Test Channel" and they have compared the 6.0 High Output battery to the 8.0 High Output battery from Milwaukee and the 6.0 actually outputs more amps due to the way each battery is designed. Though it didn't 't make a noticeable difference on most tools and they recommended getting the battery that suited the capacity/form factor needs of the individual.
@@ProjectFarm looks like my (and maybe others) video idea came through? Nice to see the results! Interesting results on 12aH for sure. Since the batteries seem to work at different speeds (different Ah ratings) makes me wonder if something with a 2.6Ah rating will last 2.6 hours doing anything or if it’s a % less, and if the 2.6Ah battery can only deliver power for X minutes, will a 6Ah battery deliver power for (6/2.6) X minutes? Will the change in time of power delivery be linear or curved because larger batteries have more juice and use more juice?

I always think at 1st, at least he gets all these cool tools out of it. Then I remember he puts them thru torture tests for us & shed a tear for them all & his wallet but it all evens out for the vids at least & he's doing a great service to consumers.

This was good stuff. I LOVE using my small 2ah batteries with my small impacts and other tools just because it's so light and easy to deal with. But next time I'm doing big jobs with the impact or the hammer drill I will most likely start with a 4 or 5ah.

He did one actually on adapters.’surprisingly dewalt out performed every other brand by a long shot. He must have been using hazardnfart knockoff if dewalt, Bauer..‘stuff is Junk I’d rather pay them extra $4 and get dewalt quality instead of snap the HF “impact” on the very first try..

@@311mdub I have seen Milwaukee trade blows with Dewalt in different tests.. Seems you really can't go wrong with either of those. Milwaukee wipes the floor with Dewalt on the big boy impacts. Wasn't even close in the tests I saw. Dewalt Drills seem to be better than Milwaukee though. Some of the new FLEX stuff is super impressive and some is not. We live in a good time for power tools lol.

Torque Test Channel did some similar testing… I found it interesting how much more power Milwaukee’s High Output, which use 21700 cells, can deliver. Also, their 6.0ah uses a different 21700 cell that delivers more power that the 12.0ah… Love your video’s, keep up the great work!

Yupp. The 21700 cell has higher output than the 18650 cell.
@Bob Mule the 12.0ah does use 21700 (as well as the 3, 6, and 8 high output). The 6.0ah uses cells that can discharge power faster. So it can outperform the 12.0 from a power standpoint, but will not run as long.
Looks like they finally caught up to Bosch who has been using those cells for years. My Core tools are still beasts

Course, if you're using a 1lb tool overhead, you probably don't need the power a 3lb battery could provide!

@@dposcuro I'd agree for the most part. An exception that comes to mind is putting in lag eye screws overhead for drop ceilings. Not necessarily an everyday occurrence, but an occurrence nonetheless.
When I see people using a 8ah and 12ah on an impact driver, I always ask myself what the f*** are they thinking?
My milwaukee blower barely works with a 2ah but a 5ah is dramatically better. It would really shine with a 9 or 12 ah. But yes a 12ah isnt needed in an impact driver
That was really interesting- I will definitely be sizing my batteries for the job at hand and buying a higher amp/hour battery for jobs that use a lot of power. Thanks for the videos genuinely it’s some of the best content around

I’d like to see you do a test on ear muffs for hearing protection and which one has the actual best noise reduction rating compared to manufacturer claims. It could be a great episode to bring Cousin Eddy back again.
Hearing protection have to be tested by ANSI in accordance with OSHA standards they are not manufacturer claims
A multitool test would be nice to see, Leatherman vs Gerber vs Swiss tool vs off brand.
Now that Leatherman has better steel blades and replaceable cutters for the jaws, it's where I'd spend my money.

I was surprised by several of the result, such as the larger batteries making that much improvement, as well as too large of a battery lowering performance. Great test idea!
The Dewalt was interesting to me as well. It wasn't that the battery capacity was too large, it's that it switched from being a 20v 12AH to a 60v 4AH. the higher voltage means it had more power, causing the blade to move faster, but it seems that that saw is more designed to operate at the usual 20v because the strokes were actually too fast at the higher voltage.
@@CptLang97 The flexvolt batteries don't supply 60V to 20V tools. They are capable of supplying 20V or 60V, depending on the tool. Which is in use depends on different metal contact arrangements in the tool's battery holder. The reason why the saw moved faster was because the battery's voltage doesn't drop as much with increasing current. Where a small battery's voltage might drop from 18V to 14V under load, a larger battery might only drop from 18V to 16V. That isn't a huge difference, but it is enough to make the saw go faster by enough to change cutting behavior. Actually supplying 60V to a 20V motor would be a very bad idea, unless your goal was to set it on fire.
w49660, the tool needed more weight (or force from the user) to effectively use the cutting power of the larger battery. As a counter example, if there was a battery that was _too weak_ to use 10 pounds of weight, the blade would've cut very slowly or stopped completely.

I discovered this myself a few weeks ago changing my truck wheels. My dewalt driver couldn’t loosen the lugs with the 2ah battery but the 9ah battery did it for a joke.

😂 You can buy low-torque impact wrenches from the big three brands that are roughly similar in size and power just without the 1/4” hex connector. But he would have to redo all his testing on socket-related videos so that the numbers were all comparable in charts going forward. That being said, I’d love to see him test impact wrenches. Especially the high-torque models.

How about a PF test on water soluble degreasers like Simple Green, ZEP, Purple Power, Orange Degreaser, Mother's etc. Thanks for putting all of the PF test on that spreadsheet. Made looking for previous PF tests much easier.

It's really nice. I tend to watch everything on youtube at 1.5 speed, or sometimes even faster. In his case you don't need to do that, 1.25x is fine.
Must be because I'm from New England, we talk faster than most of the country.

He needed a bigger gauge :D :D Maxing it out like that can eventually destroy the gauge, but I guess he gambled it can take it for the duration of the test.
Still hoping for a wood cutting oscillating blade test. Amazon has some blades as cheap as $1, where everything at Home Depot is $8-10 each. You could use the same rig as your metal cutting test, but replace the screws with hardwood dowels.

I am absolutely amazed with these results! Especially with the Sawzall results! I never thought more could be less until now! I'm surprised that they don't have something in the circuitry to limit the blade speed so that it doesn't go too fast too be useful.

For pros like me, I would say that the main, perhaps only, factor is the added runtime. It’s worth the added cost and weight to have the tool keep going in most applications. Great test though, as always!
While I don't work with power tools daily, I also find that I would rather carry 1 4lbs battery and get everything done than have to juggle small batteries

I have found that it does not matter provided that the charger can charge a battery faster than I can discharge one ! life has got better with lithium !

@Internet Person unfortunately they are not easy to buy here in Italy. Makita and De Walt are sold on most of hardware shops.
I'd say that the most common high quality brand here is Hilti. Do you know it?
@Internet Person hilti is one of the tool truck and industrial/fleet brands here in the states. From what I remember, substantially higher priced (probably double or triple the price) and often several years behind the curve in battery and electric motor tech. They do great stuff in certain areas, and have a solid warranty, but their cost is also insane for most things.

Large batteries are so heavy, its also can be ergonomics and fatigue issue
To be honest a 12.0 is not enough to even come close to wearing out my arm using all week long might just be me but it’s stupid light

@@ProjectFarm yeah, it was probably good that it shut off on the 12ah battery (probably over-current protection on the tool). as I think you would have broken many more socket adapters.

I buy old DeWalt tools primarily because there’s a Dewalt store and repair facility in my city
Hope yours is better than mine. I took a old trim nailer in and told them to let me know if the repairs would exceed $100. I made sure they wrote that on the repair ticket. I wrote it on a card attached to the nailer. Two weeks later they call and I missed it, but voicemail says "Your tool is ready" so I jet over there. The card is still attached to the nailer and the repair ticket still shows my price request. I ask "How much?" and they say "$245". $50 more would have bought a brand new tool which is what I'd have done if they had asked before fixing. Not only did they exceed my limit, they practically rebuilt the whole tool so they said. And they said it included a new battery. I told them I had batteries and the ones I used in it were just two months old so they could keep their new battery. They refused, saying they couldn't sell it as new now that they'd used it so I had to take it.
Well whatever, at least I've got a 'like new' nailer that should go a few more years and another new battery. Nope- the nailer was shot in two months, past their 30 day warranty. I took it apart and they had replaced only a few things, most of it was clearly old and worn. Pissed. Their "new" battery was shot in 6 months where I usually got 4-5 years from them. Super pissed. The DeWalt stores are ripoff ba$tard$ pure and simple. Tool Parts Direct has almost every part for any major name brand tool including DeWalt and you can DIY tool repairs and you should.
Amazing as always! I have a pile of 1.5ah batteries from all the kits over the years. One was left in the trunk for 7-8 months with an old dewalt impact driver, then used to change all the tires.. 20 lugs on an off! these tools are amazing!

Batteries are not voltage regulated when draining, a larger batt on a big load will maintain a slightly higher voltage causing better performance as well as longer run time. On Smaller load tools performance is negligible.

The Milwaukee tool results are fascinating. Using a bigger battery prevents the tool from being able to do its job at all. Seems like their overload protection system isn't working optimally.

It's interesting because when you, say, double capacity, you also double the amount of battery. That means you can pull twice the power from it, or, in cases where the voltage sags under load (battery chemistry can't react fast enough, not enough surface area), you have half the voltage sag.
All other things being equal, a battery with a bigger capacity will always be able to deliver more power, with less voltage sag.

That would be interesting. However, I’ve not used a comfortable pair of knee pads yet for work that even slightly compare to volleyball knee pads. I even shingle with the volleyball knee pads and they are a million times better. They’ll wear out, of course, but can prolong them with duct tape. Another benefit is they’re machine washable.

I find it funny that claims of 2X, 4X or 10X more power don't have any kind of reference point so, the claims are actually meaningless advertising.

Continually coming up with new ideas after so many great videos, must be tough so here's a dozen ideas:
1. Test the strength, puncture resistance, strength with a tear, cost, capacity of contractor type trash bags used for job site cleanup.
2. Best small, hand held vacuum's both corded and cordless. Test run times, suckabilty, filter clogging, particle sizes, etc.
3. Best paint brushes for quality varnish jobs. Test for bristle loss, smoothness of finish (brush marks), cost, bristle type (boar verses synthetic verses chipping brush).
4. Best bungee cords; cost, strength of hooks, strength of cord, stretch, return length after being stretched, cut resistance/performance with a cut.
5. Best 3/8" sockets; test 1/2" socket for hold without rounding off bolt heads, how much torque before breakage, wall thickness for tight spots, 6 point verses 12 point verses universal with metal rods inside.
6. Best wall anchor types for drywall; plastic anchors, self drilling, toggle bolts, hollow wall anchors, Flip toggle (you may have already done this one).
7. Best concrete anchors (for hollow block and solid walls) (Red Head, Hilti, Simpson, etc.) Also, the best concrete epoxies for holding anchors.
8. Best graffiti remover for concrete walls, metal roll up garage doors, wood fences, painted surfaces, etc.
9. Best storage bins like the 27 gal HDX; test for cost, capacity, how much weight it can hold, how high you can stack at max weight in each bin, wear when slid across concrete floors, etc.
10. Best automotive OBD II Code Readers. Cost, accuracy, ease of use, corded vs cordless.
11. Best duct tape and gaffers tape; strength, adhesiveness, residue on removal, cost.
12. Best submersible water pump; Lil Giant, Wayne, Everbilt, etc. Use similar HP ratings and test for head, speed of liquid transfer, debris handling (sand, dirt, hair, paper, gum wrappers) & run dry shut off time to prevent pump damage.
13. Best paint removers for wood, brick, rock. Test chemical, sanding, sand or media blasting and heat guns.
14. Best heat guns; cost, highest temperature, adjustment of heat and fan speeds, accessories such as round verses slotted nozzles, stand, hooks, etc.
15. Best beers....Never mind, I'm testing those personally.....

it is possible
duriung cell manufacturing and design, they have to choose in a tradeoff between power density and energy density
two different 18650 cells could have the specs:
A) 2000mAh capacity - 20A current rating
B) 3000mAh capacity - 5A current rating
the smaller battery pack would use 5x cell A in series to get to a pack voltage of 20V (single cell voltage 4.2V) and its 2Ah capacity
and it could deliver 20A of current continously
the bigger pack would use 4 parallel sets of 5 cells B in series
it would still have 20V pack voltage
one set of 5 still has a current rating of 5A
but 4 sets parallel can deliver 20A continous, just like the smaller pack, but for longer, since the capacity quadruples as well, to the 12Ah rating
if they only used 3 sets of cell B, it could only deliver 15A continous with a pack capacity of 9Ah
I'd assume they have cells wired in parallel. For DeWalt, you can model these cells as the smallest, 2Ah 20V. When wiring batteries in parallel, voltage remains the same, and capacity adds linearly. However, in parallel you decrease the effective internal resistance of the battery bank, increasing the available amperage for the tool to draw.
@@ussenterncc1701e Li-Ion battery cells have a nominal voltage of 3.6V, maximum of 4.2V an 3V minimum
20A is more than enough peak current for these tools, especially at 20V
@@marc_frank even if we assume they're just using COTS cells, we know it's a 20V battery, so we have black box of how they achieve 20V, and can't know what the actual peak amp production is without testing. At most, we can use the final product as a model and take the values as granted. Doing this, it is still reasonable to assume, whether they independently engineer batteries from the ground up or step up COTS, that they've only produced one 20V solution. Then that solution is used as a model cell.
The reason why battery size matters here even when having same voltage is how battery packs are made. Bigger batteries have more cells in parallel which in addition to higher capacity offers much higher current to be drawn by the tool.

The Torque Test Channel found these results with Miwaukee RED batteries:
CP 3.0 Amp 447ft/lbs
XC 5.0 Amp 451ft/lbs
XC 6.0 Amp 478ft/lbs ***
XC 8.0 Amp 468ft/lbs
HD12.0 Amp 474ft/lbs
They used a very heavy duty impact and measured in Foot lbs not Inch lbs. If people wondered why the number looked smaller because their not.

I recently bought a 18v Makita blower, it works much better than I thought, a handy bit of kit, I still have a large petrol backpack one, but I can't really use it in the house.
A comparison of battery blower's would be really good, from an eBay 18v knock off one up to something more expensive and meaty.

I had been hoping for this test as I knew from the manufacturers themselves that their larger batteries had performance benefits beyond just a longer run time. One thing to note from this that I had considered on previous tests is that battery size is a factor that should be controlled for in future tool tests. Fortunately I imagine you have accrued enough batteries at this point to make that pretty feasible. I didn’t however consider the possibility of a performance decrease due to faster blade speed on the reciprocating saw although as you said increased downward pressure likely would’ve corrected this issue or obviously just making use of the variable speed trigger which would once again allow the larger batteries benefits to shine making the choice to go larger a valid decision when balanced against the weight you are able withstand without fatigue during use. Also note that another touted benefit of the larger batteries according to the manufacturers is that they will have greater longevity allowing more charge cycles over its lifetime adding to their overall value.

‘Torque test channel’ do testing on pneumatic as well as electric impacts, it’s been shown on every single test the bigger battery will allow the tool to produce more torque...some an order of magnitude more. I’ve noticed a huge difference on my small ryobi’s with a 2.5ah vs an 5ah.

In actual use, the operator would be adjusting pressure for best work, in which case the bigger battery would have performed far better than the smaller one.
