First time hearing ToP? You are opening up one delicious rabbit hole with this outstanding group of musicians. You may not re-emerge for a decade or 3. But when you do, you will be wearing the biggest smile.

I know what you are talking about, I fell down the rabbit hole when I first heard Sparkling in the Sand then You're Still a Young Man when I was 12. Have seen them maybe 40 times (helps being a bay area native). Lydia Pense & Cold Blood - another fave I have seen many times

I've seen them almost 100 times and IMHO, this was my favorite lineup. Lenny Williams was and is the man on lead vocals.
RIP Rocco, Mic Gillette and Brent Byars. They're still tighter than a clenched fist today and am hoping to see them very soon.
There's nothing like "the funky doctor" popping out those bari sax counterpoints. Thanks for your review.

That tenor sax player is Lenny Pickett, who is currently the bandleader for Saturday Night Live. He has insane talent and control of the altissimo register. Catch a live video of him dancing if you can.

If you’re gonna take a sabbatical then you gotta come outta the box swinging. You just did and knocked it out of the park. Been in love with TOP, since the early 70’s. No one has done it better than them for over 50 years. That’s David Garibaldi on drums. That whole album pictured behind you is worth a listen. Plenty of great tunes, ballads too. Great song, great commentary and great to see you again doing what you love. 🔥🔥😁🔥👏👏👏

You can't go wrong with these guys!! There so much more for you to discover of TOP!! This is one of their most famous songs. My drum teacher once told me he had the sheets for this one and said he knew in theory how to play it but he had no idea how David Garibaldi did it!!

Wow, Welcome back D-Syde!! You are one of the only folks reacting to TOP that actually catches the fact that David Garibaldi, funk Drummer extraordinaire, along with the late great bassist Rocco Prestia, are so damned funky they can actually play 2 grooves at one time. Like syncopation within the syncopation. If you really want to take a nice long TOP journey with INCREDIBLE sax playing from Lenny Pickett, try 'Knock Yourself Out' from their fantastic 1976 live album 'Live and in Living Color'. Or, if I can really peak your curiosity, how about hearing what this band, who put out their first album in 1970, sounds like on their latest record... 'Soul Side of Town'. There is recent video from Jules Holland show.

I was just listening to this song a couple of days ago. Couldn't stop smiling thinking about how appropriate it is given the current conditions with, "vaccinations". Hard to believe this song was released in 1973. The first lines, "Soul vaccination...all across the nation...to keep you from catchin' honky pox, (Honkey pox)" are hilarious. David Garibaldi is one bad-ass, funky drummer. Love this song and TOP!

Well there you go again, jumped right down that hole. Glad you did. I've been a fan since the 70's. This like the Steely Dan rabbit hole. I appreciate your fondness for Can't Buy a Thrill, but a lot of your subscribers said "Wait 'til you get to Aja and Gaucho". I know how much you enjoy those horns. You can take this tour through ToP's albums, but I'm gonna say check out Tower of Power's Live released in 1999. IMHO, This album is totally "Smokin'" , and is one of the best live albums ever put out, but that is my bias. You would never get out of the elevator if this music was playing.
Just a little sidebar, I find myself listening to Steely Dan, which I do often, and after listening through an album, I just sometimes have to hear The Dramasyde version. I have really enjoyed your reactions to the music, and hope to see more. Also, check out Gino Vannelli, Living Inside Myself, Storm at Sunup, Brother to Brother, etc., another great rabbit hole. Thanks Brother, Be Blessed, and keep keepin' on.

I've been listening to Tower of Power for well over 40 years; since the mid 70s. Back in the day the Tower of Power horn section was the epitome of what a horn section should sound like. They were the benchmark for what every horn section strived for. Two more tunes I'd love to see you check out; What Is Hip and Digging On James Brown.

A little East Bay Grease would be nice, Back On The Streets is a great tune. That sax solo was Lenny Pickett, last I checked he was the Sat Night live Band director. That 5 piece horn section has 2 PHD's on it; 1st trumpet and the baritone player. Those were congas not bongos btw.

Welcome back D-Syde! Here's a group right down your alley, Dirty Loops. They're a Swedish trio of keys, bass and drums. The style is kind of jazz-pop fusion with the lead vocals reminiscent of Stevie Wonder. Here's the link to World On Fire: ua-cam.com/video/PDKecPtliGU/v-deo.html Preview if you'd like.

I've seen TOP four or five times. Totally love these guys. I met Rocco at a gig they did at a county fair in North Cali when I was out there in the navy. He was a super nice dude, kinda short. They smoked the gig of course, and me and my ex were down front, right up front. That was a good day. The way him and Dave and Bruce felt that groove in the same way, was magic.
