This is Tower of Power at their most powerful. Everyone talks about the T of P horns, but they had a monster rhythm section.

They may turn out too 80s for them, but I think they need to consider visiting Oingo Boingo, too. Danny Elfman is a masterful composer and his songs have such high energy to them.
Off of the same album ("Tower of Power") is one of the greatest slower songs of all time - "So Very Hard To Go". This locked me into an appreciation for TOP that continues to this day. That album also featured another hit of theirs - "This Time It's Real".

David Garibaldi on Drums and Rocco Prestia on Bass - the best rhythm section ever. They played together for the better part of 50 years. Rocco passed away unfortunately in 2020. They were insane. And they did it often and it was even better live.

"Horns by Tower of Power" was a battle cry on more "other artists" records than I can count. Other bands didn't have to "touch horns" because they hired Tower of Power to do it for them. You should pull up "Bump City" (Down to the Nightclub) and "So Very Hard to Go".

I hear ya, I've been hard on them a few times because they are so harsh on the '80s at times. But some good Rock came out and you have to look past the videos. We thought the videos were cool because MTV was new to us.
I’ve been a fan since their inception. They’re the most Funkiest in Old School FUNK! As I musician, I crave to see them perform whenever I can. Best rhythm section and best horns. BTW, catch them Live. They sound as tight as they’re recordings.

James Brown was founder of the concept of the band as one percussive instrument. Tower of Power took it to higher level on this song. I like the TOP songs, Don't Change Horses, Down to the Nightclub (Pure Dope)

I was just thinking of Don't Change Horses as an approachable ToP banger. And indeed Down To The Nightclub :) the latter being for 'can you be even funkier than What Is Hip?' because it isn't a deeper groove but it IS more high energy. Those who know, know what I mean :)
Andy, that's called "on the ONE" when all the instruments come together and it is the key to funk. James Brown was the man for teaching his band to play on the ONE. It is relentless in the best funk. Francis Rocco Prestia on Bass was a God.

Francis Rocco Prestia was like two bass players in one: rock-solid bottom while accenting all over the place. Yes, he was a Bass God, may in rest in peace.

Oakland's own *Tower of Power* asking "What is Hip?" - I was a wee tyke in the East Bay suburbs when this came out (soon to move south to the newly-dubbed "Silicon Valley"). So there's a fair bit of nostalgia and local pride for me in this. Similarly with *Sly and the Family Stone* - representing the Bay Area in fine form.
The great Francis Rocco Prestia on bass and Dave Garibaldi on the skins. SNL band leader Lenny Picket on alto sax in a world class horn section that played on many other albums by other artists that would surprise you. Thank you gentlemen!

Rocco was a funk machine. No one else like him.
I would say I am a fairly advanced guitarist and bassist, but I bought (in the VHS days) a two hour lesson taught by Rocco Prestia, and it added a few cool tricks to my bass playing, but holy shit was some of it freakin' hard. Gave up on duplicating most of it. Rocco was the best, in my opinion. More amazing than Graham, Collins or any of the other legends.

Little Feat plus the TOP horns on Little Feat's epic live album, Waiting For Columbus. My personal favorite is Mercenary Territory and I found this nice little tidbit;
"They were backed on these shows by the Tower of Power horn section; their leader, Emilio Castillo, told Songfacts: "We were prominently featured on the whole recording, but 'Mercenary Territory,' to me, was the highlight. The tenor solo by Lenny Pickett, playing off of Lowell George's searing guitar is completely off the chart!""
I've seen them almost 100 times. Never disappointed. Yes, I'm old but hip. RIP Rocco, Bruce Conte, Brent Byars. To me, this was their best lineup. Lenny Williams was and is the man up front.
Dear guys, four years ago I was doing some work in Menlo Park. One evening I was invited to watch a basketball game. I didn’t know nothing ‘bout basketball but since I am a Swede and there was a Swedish guy, Jonas, playing in the Golden state warriors I went there. The paus started, a band was gathering, and my company started to go to by sausages n stuff. I heard the first riff and called to everyone around me: “You have to stay! This is “What is hip” and the band is Tower of Power!!!! Well, noone cared, they all went to buy sausages. I went to heaven. Tower of Power playing What is hip - live, and I was there! The most surprising musical experience in my life. Btw - I really appreciate your reactions!
Blood Sweat and Tears (You've made Me So Very Happy) is a definite must... Two great Tower Of Power tunes are "So Very Hard To Go" and A cover of The Temptations "(I Know) I'm Losing You" Their classic is "You're Still A Young Man".

FYI... Lenny Pickett is an American saxophonist and musical director of the Saturday Night Live band. From 1973 to 1981 he was a member of Tower of Power. He is known for his skill in the altissimo register, which can be heard during the opening credits of Saturday Night Live

In the 1990s I worked at a little bar & grill in Walnut Creek, CA that had live music every night. Often the Tower of Power horn section would pop in to play with scheduled bands.

There was a San Francisco Bay Area band called Pacific Brass & Electric that also had many other names, depending on which core members were replaced for the gig. Tower Of Power guys were often part of the various lineups.
During the 80's, I saw them back a few bands at the Rathskeller in Berkeley, always a great time.
Saw TOP in college back in the late 70's. In high school we debated who has the best horns, Chicago or TOP. I like both but TOP does it for me. Go Emilio Castillo, founding member and still going strong.
Always felt like TOP had the better overall horn section - partly because it was just fatter. But Chicago always had better songwriting and arranging, in my opinion. Also felt Chicago had better vocals and rhythm section, at least in the Terry Kath era.
Been a fan 0f TOP since seeing them live, ironically at the Tower Theatre in Philadelphia long ago...............
Don't forget the master arranger of all those delicious horn parts, Doc Kupka on the baritone sax.

I’ll say it again, you boys need to hit the Little Feat live album, Waiting for Columbus. Arguably one of the best live albums of all time, and it features the Tower of Power horns. Besides the ridiculously talented Lowell George (songwriter, vocalist, slide), Feat has my favourite keyboard player, Bill Payne. These days, when Payne isn’t busy with the Feat, You can see him on tour playing with Bob Seger or the Doobie Brothers.

We first saw TOP in Cleveland Ohio at the Agora when they just released East Bay Grease. No one knew them, there were maybe 20 people in the audience. The next time they came back to Cleveland you couldn't get into the club. One of the greatest groups of all time and should be in the Rock 'n' Roll Hall of Fame. They are real musicians and have "Soul with a capital S." 🎼🥁🎷🎺🎲
They blew the roof off our arena while opening for J GEILS. Gail's opened his set saying, how could they follow that?
Lenny Williams was the vocalist on their first album - as far as I'm concerned, when he left, it just wasn't the same band. Item of info: they used to tour with bands like Little Feat - thesr's a video of Little Feat and TOP in London that's just killer!!

David Garibaldi--voted best drummer in the world by Modern Drummer Magazine something like 15 years in a row. Check out the breakdown on Squib Cakes--that ain't a bass guitar, that's Chester Thompson playing organ foot pedals. With Little Feat "Waiting for Columbus". With Elton John "Caribou". With Huey Lewis and the New, "Hip to Be Square", etc. After recording "Caribou" Elton offered them so much money to exclusively be his horn section, their manager would not tell them how much he offered on the fear that might accept.
I've seen Tower of Power in concert (Detroit) twice in the last 8 years - even in their older age they still lay down the funk HARD! They certainly can do this again, you definitely have to check out more!!
Saw them in a triple bill with Pleasure and James Brown back in the 80s. Such an astoundingly funky show.

I love Funk and enjoyed this song, but I found it a bit repetitive. I would have given it a B+. Not because it's bad. It's not. Only because I've heard better Funk songs, in my opinion; and that is all it is, my opinion.
TOP didn't get played on the Radio in my hometown. Unless you watched Soul Train in '73 we didn't have any exposure to them. So don't be surprised if we don't know them. Class'74.
You have my condolences 🥲. I grew up in the San Francisco Bay Area so the FM stations, especially KSAN, played them a lot, and actually was first to play them in the Bay Area

I saw them one time in my life. They were Huey Lewis’s back up band for his tour that came through Providence RI back in 1989. I was blown away.
I believe ToP provided the horns to the whole "Face This" album.
Fun fact: The bass player was Victor Conte, the guy behind the BALCO steroid scandal from the early 2000s

Was never really a funk fan but I first heard this band in the early 90s when I switched from guitar to bass and was told about Rocco in the same breath as Jaco and Jamerson. Powerful stuff.
The three funkiest bassists in history, and none of the three slapped. And Jamerson only picked with one finger. His right index finger was so legendary, it even had its own nickname: "The Hook."
I got to see them in 1973 at Winterland in SF.
There’s an old live version of this on UA-cam from an older tv show I think that is actually even better than the studio version.

I think you're talking about their appearance on Soul Train in '73 when this came out. I don't think it was live though, because bands on Soul Train were usually lypsincing.

Their musicianship is always excellent, but it becomes overwhelming after a short period of time. There is not enough space. Neil Young is fond of saying of his work,"it's all one song," but listen to TOP for any real length of time it FEELS that way. Masterful, in smaller doses. In large doses, a grind.
Yeah, I kind of feel the same way. I grew up with that sound and loved it but I think I felt that way back in the day about them. Like, I couldn't pick up the needle and put it back down at the beginning of the song over and over again like a lot of other groups I liked.
You guys are great and put to shame all the other “reaction” videos….Your analysis of songs is spot on and has depth. Now you need to listen to “So Very Hard to Go”……TOP is so tight…..love to see them appreciated today.
