How fast is a Primitive Bow? Sinew backed osage recurve
Вставка

- I took the back sinew from the bull elk I killed this September and backed the osage bow that killed him. Backing this bow with sinew drew it into a reflex and added about six pounds to the draw weight. The standard for measuring speed of a traditional bow, whether it be a selfbow, longbow, or recurve, is to shoot an arrow weighing 10 grains per pound of draw weight. This combination is right at that. This bow and arrow have the following specs. 57lb bow, 29 inch draw, 565 grain arrow.
Although it is possible to build sinew backed bows that will shoot a lot faster than this, the speed of this bow in combination with it's durable and accurate design make it a very practical hunting bow that rivals the performance of any modern material traditional bow.

I’ve enjoyed watching your videos for a few months now. Thanks for putting traditional archery info out there for the average Joe!
Very Cool, 177 FPS is very fast for a bow of that type, I conographed a 54 lb sen backed Pacific Yew bow with a 535 gr arrow once that was 160 FPS.
Nice clay
Love watching your videos !
Great channel!
That is a cool bow. I make bows for fun..trying to hunt with them too. But the bow you have here is nice. I like the genky limbs
Thanks
Love it
Oh yeah great food!!! Great food!!!I ll consider do the class again just for the food.lol
Haha! Come on.
This is a take down Bow , great job
Nice
This was a super cool video. Thanks for all the information. Few questions what was the arrow weight ,and the grains per pound (gpp) for this test? Thanks
Bow is 57lbs@29”. Arrow is 565grains.
I made one long time ago shot that fast Osage
How long is that bow?
How much do your arrows weigh
Hey Clay, how long do you let the sinew cure/dry after applying on your bow?
It really depends on the conditions. I use a moisture meter to check the moisture content of the sinew. I want it to be below 10 percent. Sometimes a few weeks.
@@clayhayeshunter thanks Clay. Just bought a moisture meter! 👍Mines at 13%, I'm impatiently waiting.
Do you have a light kit on that chrony? I bought a chrono made by Caldwell and it just doesn't work on overcast days. Was thinking of switching to the competition brand...
I just used a couple strips of LED lights from Home Depot. Works great.
@@clayhayeshunter I make lightsabers, too. So I could probably make something now that I'm thinking of it. Lol
Clay, have you found osage orange trees in Florida, I am in the Ocala area and looking for local wood to harvest staves
Elm and hickory in Florida. Look to central Alabama for Osage.
@@clayhayeshunter thanks Clay
I have been looking around in Florida and couldn't find any osage. Maybe a road trip to Alabama would be the way to go.
Very fast, I thought you might have got 160 FPS. What the draw weight?
57#@29”
Think you'll ever be around Louisiana?
NW Florida is just a few hours away.

Awesome! I'm north of Milton, in Santa rosa county. The next county over from where Pensacola is. I've made some board bows and myself and my wife and kids all shoot self bows, recurves, longbow, and Olympic style reurves(barebow)How do I get more info on the class? Dates and cost and such? Thanks
What draw weight and arrow weight.? Speed has no meaning without these stats
blackdiamondsw1 he answered that. About 10 gpp
Stats are in the description. 57lbs@29”. 565 grain arrow.
Clay have you ever ate a burger from the Oval Office in Milton? If not you have to try one when you come home!!!
About 7.5 miles from the ranch
@@GreenIris1110 Yes I have! So much has changed since I moved away back in 2004. I hardly recognize the place anymore. There are still some of the old landmark businesses like that though. Where's the best place to get a sack of oysters these days?
@@clayhayeshunter jury is still out on how they all fared after Hurricane Michael... looking bad east of here soo prices are up to 12.50 per pound prepared... Joe Patti's is about the only game in town... 50 lbs live bag at Joe Pattis is about 60 bucks right now..
Used to love raw oysters till I watched the UA-cam videos of people showing the parasites they find in them at the oyster bar.
You’ve certainly got to get them from the right water and the right time of year.
