How the 2-Stroke Engine & Carburetor Work Together!

  • An Enlightening Explanation of how the Engine & Carb work as One. FOR GREATER KNOWLEDGE
    - So let's begin: An internal combustion engine known as a two-stroke engine runs on a special cycle that requires two piston strokes (up and down) to complete one cycle of operation. Due to its simplicity and lightweight attributes, this design is frequently employed in smaller power equipment like chainsaws, motorbikes, and outboard boat engines. A two-stroke engine operates as follows:
The piston begins its downward movement during the intake stroke when it is at the top of the cylinder, close to the spark plug. It uncovers ports or apertures near the cylinder bottom that are connected to the crankcase (lower part of the engine) as it descends. In the cylinder, the piston's downward action partially evacuates the space.
Air-Fuel Mixture Intake: As the piston descends, a mixture of air and fuel (typically premixed) is taken into the cylinder from the carburetor or the fuel injection system. Then, through the open ports, this mixture is drawn into the crankcase.
Compression Stroke (Upward Movement): After the piston completes its downward stroke, it turns around and ascends the cylinder in the opposite direction. The air-fuel combination pumped into the crankcase during the intake stroke is compressed as it rises. Near the apex of the stroke, the spark plug ignites this compressed mixture.
Power Stroke: As the compressed combination burns, a high-pressure, expanding gas is created. Mechanical work is produced as a result of the expanding gas pushing the piston down the cylinder. This is the engine's power stroke.
Exhaust Stroke (Upward Movement): The piston resumes its upward motion after the power stroke. Near the top of the cylinder, it reveals exhaust openings as it rises. Through these exhaust ports, the expanding gas from the power stroke is discharged into the exhaust system.
The cycle is repeated, and the engine keeps running as a result. At the end of the exhaust stroke, when the piston has reached the top of the cylinder, the intake ports are once more exposed, and the cycle repeats. A power stroke occurs after every two piston strokes (one full up-and-down movement) in a two-stroke engine.
Two-stroke engines are notable for their simplicity and light weight, making them appropriate for applications where compactness and strong power-to-weight ratios are crucial. However, in comparison to four-stroke engines, which have an independent intake and exhaust stroke, they also frequently use less gasoline and sometimes emit more pollution. Additionally, two-stroke engines frequently need their fuel and oil mixed together in order to lubricate the moving parts.
This principle works for most types of Chainsaw saws, and the following also helps with Chainsaw maintenance. So, whether you are using a Stihl Chainsaw, Husquvarna Chainsaw, basically, all types of Petrol Chainsaw are valid for this principle, as well as many types of or a 2 Stroke Engine. The Electric Chainsaw, of course, escapes this whole principle!
I really hope you enjoy. Craig

    WOW! This is fantastic!
A teacher of mine once said that the best indicator of how well you understand a topic is your ability to explain it clearly to others. By that metric, you understand 2-stroke engines better than anyone I've ever met!
Equally impressive is the fact that you've illustrated a complex, dynamic process using only paper and colored markers! OK, maybe a straight edge as well. ;-)
Although price might not have been the determining factor in your choice of methods, it still goes to show that imagination and diligence are often more important than having the best, most expensive equipment.

I wish you were my instructor for every class I've ever taken. The way you illustrate and explain works exactly like my own mind. Great job! Honestly, I thought I knew pretty much everything there is to know about 2 stroke engines, but it seems that there is a little fact in everyone of your videos that I'd never considered. For instance with this one, I had no idea that air/fuel was transferred from underneath the piston to the top of it. I always assumed that it drew air in through the intake on the down stroke like a 4 stroke engine. Thanks for sharing your vast understanding of this topic!

Thank you and Well done.............Just bought a Honda SGX Sky.............which was all running fine and sounds light a sewing machine..........Then after wizzing about locally and doing less than a mile.....the recs remained higher than usual tick-over,...............Had a look and tried to find the fault, assuming it would be a simple throttle sticking..............Whilst it is the case the revs stick .............it also has a problem when left standing ............the engine appears a little erratic............Now wondering if it is the reed valves...........having had the carb off and found nothing unusual............So apart from another strip down to check the reed valve..........I am thinking some kind of air leak...........or the auto choke..........but I will have another look at the throttle valve (although it does appear to be seated at it's lowest point correctly) Problem being here the air box is a lot of work to remove and may give a false reading, by drawing in excess air...........Any ideas ?

It's like it bogs down in first and second gear I was just wondering if doing this will change it? I'm new to riding and don't know to much so any advice would help thanks!

    Fantastic video once again!
I'm studying a mechanical engineering BTEC so this is very helpful. I recently bought a 2 stroke engine just to take apart (thought a 2 stroke would be a good place to start as they are so small and simple, relative to a car's engine at least) , and I'm pleased to say I managed to rebuild it and it still works a treat, so it's nice to have the theory of operation explained so clearly.
If you don't mind me asking; what's you're training and experience? Are you an engineer or mechanic?

I was taken on as an apprentice mechanic in 1991 and undertook a 4 year 'maintenance and repair engineering' qualification at College, which was combined with block release where I alternated between College and my job. In 2000, I undertook a science BSc hons degree, where I learned the in depth workings of things on a molecular level. I have since tried to combine the two disciplines to try and present an understanding to others. I have been working in the industry since I was an apprentice. I hope this helps, and thanks again for your comment. Craig

I meant to say in my last message that it's great news about your BTEC Mechanical Engineering course, which must be an amazing subject to learn. Well done with your rebuild of your 2 stroke engine also. I hope all goes well for you and you become qualified and have a very succesful career. Thanks Craig

Thanks for your reply's. At only 19 it's difficult to comprehend how I could ever have the knowledge to become an engineer or mechanic one day, so your videos and knowledge of your background is invaluable. Thanks again!

Thanks again, and I know that you will be great at your subject because i can tell you love what you are doing, and you are investing your own time in learning. You remind me of what I was like when I was your age. As you know, learning never stops though and I'm probably learning more now than I ever have. So get out there and be the best, your hard work will deserve it.

Well thank you so much for putting so much effort into this vid. Those illustrations must have taken some time and it was very succinct. I'm trying to learn how to maintain/repair my own gear and this is great. Your previous video on carbs was really good too.
Can you give me your thoughts on non-genuine parts? I have picked up a number of well used stihl tools 2nd hand and they need new gaskets, carb diaphragms, air filters. Stihl parts are known to be expensive but they seem to be even more so in Aus (I have seen carb kits go for less than a third of the price overseas). I am sure there are bad 3rd party copies but are there lots of decent ones that have a better performance/price ratio too?

Hi, thank you for your kind words, they really do encourage me and help give me the confidence to continue including other videos. As for the parts, I agree with you that genuine parts are very expensive indeed. I have always recommended that if you aren't a professional landscape gardener, for Instance, who use their equipment more or less every day, for hours on end, but rather once a week on your own garden, then yes, none genuine parts should be fine. I have several garden machines of my own that I only use on my own garden each weekend and they have been ok for the last few years even though I have used none genuine parts in them when I rebuilt them back then. Of course there are varying levels of quality regarding none genuine parts but finding which one is the best is really trial and error, in my experience anyway. If you were a pro gardener using your machine everyday then I would recommend genuine because they are generally much more durable in the long run, in my experience anyway.
      I hope this has helped
      Many thanks indeed
      Craig

Wow, interesting. Next - please explain why some 2Ts have a REED valve but others don't.
