I think it's not so much about expecting affection as a reward for your actions, for good is what a hero (finn) or anyone with a good moral compass would do, regardless of what they can get in return; It's more about how she's just not a good individual and she constantly proved she didn't deserve help from problems caused by herself.
Friendly reminder that PB practically groomed Finn for a good chunk of the early seasons, even lying about her age so that Finn would believe that the age gap between the them wasn’t as big as it really was.
Something Finn rightful calls her our own, he calls her a weirdo.

@@whatisthis7551but it’s not like Finn’s crush on her was 100% something he made up, PB made him believe he had a shot with her, in the wizard fight context when she was supposed to kiss the winner Finn went there disguised hoping he would finally be able to kiss her but then they find out it’s him, PB calls him for lying saying it was a wizard-only contest but she still kissed him on the lips, of course he would keep thinking about her after that she made him think he had a shot with her, also about the “too young” issue the real problem here was never about their ages, the problem is that PB was physically an imortal teenager, in the show the problem was that he was “too young” for her but as soon as Finn was like 25 they would start saying he was “too old” for her and she could have told Finn that so he would know it wouldn’t happen because he would grow up the way humans do and she wouldn’t so it would have never worked and he should look for a princess that lived the same way he did (like Flame princess) but instead she made him feel as if he was the problem, that if he wasn’t for that age gap they could have been a couple (the good and old “it’s not you, it’s me”)

I was legitimately pissed when pb was “collecting taxes” from Finn and jake when they live clear outside of the candy kingdom, or any kingdom for that matter, after all the countless missions they’ve done for her for free, (which are really messed up sometimes), and all the times she’s completely neglected them if they inconvenienced her in any way

Uncle Gumbald literally sends Fern to ruin Finn's birthday and started a war, she doesn't mind talking through with him, but he turns her loyal subject, Peppermint Buttler, into an idiot, and after the dream sequence, she wanted to reconcile with him, but Gumball still insists on turning PB dumb until Aunt Loli foil his plan.

I will forever be thankful that I dropped this show after season 6. I will never understand why she wasn’t a villain and even got a happy ending with a girlfriend, seriously this is beyond my understanding. Like she was truly an awful person, I remember that me and all friends thought she was evil and cruel, but for some reason the older people who watched the show (the ones that would had been 20-ish when it aired) see her as “uwu she is a bean and dating Marceline, so cute”. I would’ve liked it if she was the villain. Not an antagonist, but *the* main villain of the series. It would’ve been a nice little lesson on how looks can be deceiving and sometimes the people you love can turn out to be rotten on the inside. With this happening to Finn and traumatizing him to a certain point, it would’ve initiated his character arc of finding himself and beginning to mature. Don’t you think the series would’ve been a lot more interesting if they pulled that on us?
Plus princesses are always usually the good guys in the story or the damsel-in-distress that the hero has to rescue. It would actually be pretty nice to have an evil princess in a story.
Just like Makima and Griffith. Both characters are villainous psychopath whose presence push their respective series heroes to grow, that are Denji and Guts.

Over time, as Finn and Jake mature, they slowly begin to realise all the scummy shit PB has done. Eventually, they pull her up about this, and after a heated arguement, the next season would be a massive battle between pretty much everyone affilliated with PB against PB and subservient candy soldiers she would've made. Fuck, Goliad could've returned as an ally to PB.
@@sygiliph2495 the only moment we had something close to that was in the Elements episodes, that’s when we actually see PB’s true colors she became that giant candy mountain, she turned other creatures to candy but even those who she transformed weren’t like the usual candy people they felt like a hive mind being controlled by her like puppets, and she wanted to do that to everyone in Ooo, maybe that’s something she intended to do for a long time: take on Ooo, and she only didn’t because LSP stopped her
on top of all that, not only she's a princess (which is always seen as "true, pure and sweet" in the Hero saving a fantasy land tales that AT looked like at first), but she's also literally a princess made out of candy, that rules over a kindom made out of all kinds of sweets, they did play with the "the candy kingdom is a dreamland on the surface, but fcked up when you look deeper into it" thing, but I feel like they didnt give it as much of a punch as it could
would fit with Adventure Time too, looks innocent at the surface but when you actually watch it you realized its not only more complex than what it looks tackling some dark stuff too, such as trauma and abandonment issues, and the very first princess our Hero rescues while still being a child turning, and the one supposed to be the sweetest of them all, turning out to be the one controlling the lich behind the scenes would be cool af

Marceline had a musical number where the first line was "Sorry I don't treat you like a goddess" and later said "You don't even treat me as a person"
I don’t know if the writers did it purposely or unintentionally made her a horrible person but MAN I really wish they let her pay for everything she did. I hate her so much I wouldn’t even be upset if they had killed her off. It sucks the show ended already without giving us that satisfaction.
Facts Man, I think she should of at least had some sort of backlash, instead the creators done fan service and gave her happy ending, such a stupid decision.
To me, Rose Quartz and PB are very opposite in how problematic they are. Many of Rose’s bad actions were done out impulsiveness and recklessness, where as PB’s were done out of paranoia
Plus, Rose tried to change and to help everyone she could. PB basically shat on everyone on purpose.

Rose Quartz was supposed to a purely good character that's slowly revealed to be a morally gray character..... then the writers shot themselves in the foot by making her Pink Diamond and revealing her past to be a brat with more lasting consequences than we thought to the remaining characters around after her death then beat on her corpse of how much of a bad person she was afterwards because there's no way she's a morally gray character at that point after portraying her as an abusive victim.
Princess Bubblegum was seen as a morally good character despite having some questionable quirks, became morally gray after after almost dying by the lich, and then became a downright villain before redeeming herself during seasonal rot. The only difference here is that Rebecca may have realized that she can't undo a poorly thought out decision and had to double down. Meanwhile, PB was rarely called out and still gets a happy than the main character Finn.
Moral of story: I don't know. Have well thought out idea if you're planning on writing a morally gray character. Also have them get real consequences if they are still alive.

I think they both are just as bad, I know we see RQ's character development in reverse, that is something everyone who has ever tried defending her always bring up, but honestly even if you see a timeline you can still see several flaws in her action plan, now I know mistakes are inevitable and there is no being perfect, if the diamonds could never commit any mistakes then the crystal gems would never be able to beat them, but there were so many things she did, grew up to realize were wrong yet recused to deal with the consequences, either because it was out of fear or because she thought it didnt matter, lying to her allies about pretty much everything was the biggest fcked up thing she did. She kept so many secret and didnt told anyone because she was scared people would either stop following and believing in her, or would turn up against her, and she took every single one of those secrets to her grave, and they continued to cause distress on her allies and her own son years after she passed away, the war she fought killed thousands (both on her side, and unrelated people, apparently several dozen Quartz were killed or bubbled up) and yet she refused to acknowledge any guilt, once again, lying to her friends and hiding it, any attempts to "change" never actually happened and stayed as just attempts because she was scared of what was going to happen and how people would react to her recklessness and the consequences of her own actions
Steven had to deal with a bunch of Bs from an early age because of that, and dear god pearl had SO much bottled up trauma from that loyalty to a dead person who didnt treat her with decency until later in life, a few decades before her 'death'
There's a reason that Gumbald turned out as he did.

Ok, to be fair, Gumbald was practically homicidal, and had turned the other two against PB. This, if I need to remind you, was years before any of the horrible shit we've seen her do, and it happened while she was still a kid. I'm not defending any of the crap she's done, and I don't know about you, but if I heard my family plotting to poison me, and then they got poisoned themselves, I'd probably not only leave them as a trio of harmless idiots, I'd probably be a paranoid wreck too.

Still it’s interesting to see how that affected her actions afterwards, Chicle, Lolli and Gumbald were candy people she made to be her family and take care of her, being as rational and independent as she was, but then they turned against her, in Gumbald’s defense he only did that the moment she ruined his project because it wasn’t what she wanted them to do, and then she kept making more candy people after they were transformed but she no longer would make them rational and independent, she made the candy citizens intentionally dumb and dependent on her so she wouldn’t be betrayed again and that’s when her God-complex started and even though her trauma is comprehensible it doesn’t make her attitude any less horrible she creates life to blindly worship her and controls them as if they’re her pets, it’s as horrible as the situation of a mother who keeps her kids isolated and doesn’t teach or let them grow as people so they wouldn’t leave her

Not to mention during the badlands episode with James she sabotaged everything to make it look like James messed things up to only knock out Fin AND Jake to sacrifice James because there's only one of Fin and she can make more of James which she ended doing... Over and over again not even realizing that she created a slew of James's which ended up mutated due to saving everyone. PB then in turn tells mutated James to go to the badlands and he refuses she then says she'd send the mass of James's gold medals just to stay there and they accept because their too dumb courtesy of PB.
How is it that Flame Princess, Ice King (okay him I get), and Benson from Regular Show have a page on the Villains Wiki yet Princess Bubblegum doesn’t, but has a page on the Heroes Wiki?

One of my biggest criticisms of this show was they clearly tried to make her this bad so she could grow and be better from hanging out with Finn and Jake and Marcy but the problem was the execution they never really hammered home that she learned the lesson they would set her up to learn and she never really started to change till the first ending of the series before they continued it later on. Thus she comes off being more purposefully evil then they intended. It’s similar to how the creator of Max and Ruby didn’t intend for Ruby to come off as being a bitch but she does or Calloiu to come off as a brat but he does.
Good analysis, what I will say tho is after watching obsidian her character was way better in the OG, her anti villain personality is what made her a great character, her normal acting portrayal in distant lands was boring
I don’t think it was intentional, I think they wanted PB to feel like a wise and caring leader who would make harsh decisions for the greater good but as you said she came off being more purposefully evil than they intended but still she kept doing that for so many seasons it felt like it was building up to something, like there would be some great twist by the last season when the main characters would find out she was some sort of evil force or that she had some sort of plan to control Ooo and they would turn against her, but it didn’t happen…

Bubblegum is honestly so oblivious to the consequences of her actions, or maybe purposefully neglectful. Cartoon Network seriously made one of the most self centered and selfish characters on their channel and somehow tried framing her as "a good guy".

The biggest flaw with Adventure Time is that she never receives and comeuppance, is barely acknowledged as a bad person, and gets a happy ending. I honestly thought she would be a full on antagonist that Finn would realize is evil at some point and that was when I was just a kid watching the show.

It would be kinda messes up to do that. Broco was already beyond obsessed with her, his whole life and being was made around trying to court her. He would've never left her alone or wouldn't live without her. Finn on the other hand was a teenage boy with a crush who would eventually grow out of it and have his own experiences.

The only reason Broco was in the picture because the gumball guardian told Peppermint butler that PB needs to get out of her lab and socialize more. That's why Peps looked at her suitors to get her out of the lab more.

Gonna give Rose Quartz the benefit of the doubt, she was selfish and saw the people around her as her playthings but at least she has the argument that it was the environment she was raised in. Not to mention, SU actually acknowledges the world of destruction Rose left in her wake and that she committed horrible actions. I’d argue that PB is significantly worse than Rose because she’s smart enough to understand exactly what she’s doing and she just doesn’t care.
Rose was a reckless abused child who wanted things to be better than they were, but ended up making things worse because of the tendencies she picked up from the Diamonds and her guilt. PB *knows* what's she's doing and literally has a method to her madness. She is basically like Kenjaku from Jujutsu Kaisen, she would do anything for her own purposes, although unlike Kenjaku, who is loyal to one grand plan with a few deviations for personal fufilment, PB just wants fucking chaos as long as she's in control of said chaos.
