Sad thing is, you can now easily see what his Native informant was referring to- we now know the Amazon River valley was very heavily populated, but Introduction of European diseases decimated whatever nations were living there. The "cities" weren't any more or less advanced than the average Natives, there just used to be way, way more people in that region with a lot more settlements with higher populations.

5:10 I know this is a product of the time in which this happened, but this is such a good example of bad archaeology. You should never build an idea of what you think a find will prove to you. Not to say you should go into every discovery completely blind of context, but so many early finds were horribly botched and poorly recorded, because the explorers (not even archaeologists yet) had preconceived theories of what they would find, based on almost no evidence, and then set out to find things that would "prove" these theories. Rather than take what is found and analyse it within context to see what information can be learned, they instead often tried to fit a round peg into a square hole. And the true shame of archeology is; you can only have a dig site and recovery once, and that dig can never be recreated. So anything done badly, or lost, or not properly recorded, is gone forever. And we remain none the wiser.
Honestly... I feel like many of these people just ended up in the belly of some wild animal. I mean if that were the case, in what scenario would we even be able to prove or disprove it anyway? Seeing the way some tourists have low levels of self awareness around wild animals... I don't know man 😬
