  • Installing hardwood on stairs you need the stair measuring tool. If you don't have a professional stair measuring tool, you can do it yourself! For this purpose you may use piece of plywood (1/4") or laminate. This piece of wood should be a bit longer than stair tread or riser. Cut it in the middle and try to catch all angles on the stair tread or riser. Fasten pieces of plywood with two clamps and now you can mark this size on your future stair tread or riser. This is the simplest stair measuring tool which you can do for the shortest time!

    It only takes a few minutes to make a stare tread jig, the time it takes you the fuss around with aligning your two pieces multiply that by 10 or 12 however many treads you actually have it would’ve been faster and more accurate to have made up a tread jig...

    This looks a good idea but for me did not work very well. The two pieces were heavy and clamps will get in the way of flat measurements. This resulted in imprecise marking.

      You can use 18 Ga 2-3 nails for each sides to secure boards, if you don't like clamps. Then take nails out and repeat process. I guessing - this is the easiest way! Thanks!

    Great idea,but when I saw your made size with the template on the floor, the two part templates are not in same level height, it bent over made size not accurate,My advice is you need add another small piece under the top template part to make them in same level and stable.

      Joe Qiao It doesn't matter how high or low parts of this tool are. The main idea: how to measure the angles with cheap materials you can always have at home.

    Mryoucandoityourself how to measure stairs square feet for material

    • @MrYoucandoityourself
      @MrYoucandoityourself  5 років тому

      Hi Sergio, riser-7.5’+tread 9,5’=17’-approximately 1.5 ft.
      So, 1 l.f of stairs=1.5s.f.
      1 fly with 8 stairs, 3 feet long each = 3x8=24x1,5= 36s.f.
      Don’t forget if you need make nosing from same material- it’s extra.

    Hello,
    When installing laminate flooring on my stairs, do I need to remove the 3mm foam pad that it came with from the factory before glueing it down on the steps and landing areas?
    Thanks!

    • @MrYoucandoityourself
      @MrYoucandoityourself  10 років тому

      Each foam pad is different, so try to glue small piece of laminate (with foam pad) with construction adhesive somewhere in your construction place and leave it for minimum 24 hours. After this time you'll see how strong it is. If strong - you can install your laminate on stairs as is, if not - delete foam pad.

    What the use of spending 96$ for something you use once. This man is a genius.
