Would you go public with your million-dollar find?
No I would not.
Absolutely not. I can’t even imagine the hate, trolls and money grabbers that it would create especially if it was exposed in social media or by the media in general
Yes, so I could evil laugh in all their faces while rubbing my hands😂😂
I'd go public with a $100 find.but seriously though I was drooling as you counted off the cards. It's like those old gold prospecting stories, you build up a fever as
you look at a find like that....gold fever? How 'bout. Card fever...what a experience thanks for sharing it.
Only if I was trying to create a brand In the space.
If it was dumb luck and I was just gonna retire then hell no.
I’d never go public if I had a million dollar find. That $80k psa 8 Mantle was a steal. Crazy how much less it sold for than that 8.5.
I was collecting back in the 1980 . And you could get a 52 mantle for like $1500 back then.
(Goes downstairs, checks basement).
A box of 1990 Donruss, and a few beanie babies. Maybe I need to wait a few more years lol.
Junk wax boxes eventually lay eggs that hatch into vintage cards! Be patient!
Uh....you know how old the pyramids are? You're going to need LONGER.
Stories like this are what got my father into collecting and hitting yard sales, which was unfortunately in the early 90s and he never was able to hit that gold mine of 50s cards. We went thru all his cards a few weeks back and while he def did get some solid cards, he's overloaded with junk wax Era stuff. It was still fun going thru them tho, but man we tried so hard finding those vintage cards. Still was a great experience collecting with him.
Sounds like a nice memory
Keep those coming. Love to see beautiful vintage cards still out there changing people's lives.
Dear Mike,
Every time I tune in to your channel I learn something. You are easy to listen to and you are never condescending.
Thank you for a wonderful instalment!
Peter
Peter, thanks so much!
Absolutely love hearing these stories. Thank you. 👍
Thank you!
I had over 3000 baseball cards growing up in the 60s. The only rookie card of a future hall of famer I remember was of Tom Seaver. Had about six of that 1968 card. Nolan Ryan another. Can't remember more. But I'm sure there could have been. Mickey Mantle though was my #1 guy. Had all of Mickey from 1961-1968 and 1956. Nothing more than that. Willie Mays, Warren Spahn, Sandy Koufax etc. etc. etc. I had at least one of many major superstars of baseball. It was a fun hobby until it got boring when I matured (after acquiring 3000 bordom tends to take over). I gave them all away to a neighbor's kid so he might enjoy something in which to devote some wholesome time to. At the time card collecting, including Beatle cards, was no big deal like stamps or coins were and so was never regarded as great in value. To this day I've no regrets letting go of my collection. It meant more to somebody else at the time than it would have for me later. Much later. Like twenty years later. That's when those cards started to mean something financially. And I wasn't about to hang on to 3000 near worthless cards in 1973. They were just pictures of men I once looked up to as a kid. When I became a man myself I simply wanted to stop starring at and adoring pictures of other men. No regrets at all.
Oh, I was able to retire at 50 so things worked out financially very well indeed. And I didn't need any help from a Mickey Mantle card to achieve that.
Love these stories. Thank you for sharing.
Thanks Ziggy!
Crazy to think if they found these 2-3 years later you could easily triple what they sold for
Yup!
1 million is enough tho
Incredible discovery! Thanks for another fantastic video!
Glad you enjoyed it!
Awesome find, those cards are worth more now. Thanks again for another great video
Thanks Orlando!
Love these attic finds
Thanks!
Hi Mike, great story. I enjoyed it. Those are some awesome cards. I would have hand delivered those cards to PSA. Keep these stories coming please and thank you.
Thanks Jim!
Absolutely amazing.
Love the video and story!
Love stories like these thank you for the research 👍🏻
Thanks!
Wow thats a great story. The cards look beautiful and colorful you figured they would of got a lot more money at auction for them. I would do the same just first name. Just imagine the feeling you would have if you found them or owned them that would be awesome.
Just helped clean out my aunts house with my cousin. Found a near mint Dr J rookie card along with a Wilt Chamberlain and Lew Alcindor (not rookie cards though).
Also found a bunch of 1960 cards that included Mays, Aaron, etc.
We were pretty excited to see them after being the attic for 50 years. How they stayed in near mint condition was interesting as they were in a plastic box within a cardboard box. The carboard box along with all the other paper/cardboard in that box was chewed away by mice. So glad the good cards were in that plastic box.
Wow! Big find!
@@JunkWaxHero It's so cool when these pieces of art surface 60-70 years later in great condition.
I always put Jody Reed's cards in my bike spokes, and if he wasn't available - Oil Can Boyd! Anyway, this is interesting because a lot of high-end collectors don't want anyone to know that they have cards because of theft. I cant say I blame them. I bought a collection of 1950 Bowman Baseball cards autographed in 1950 and 1951 from a lawyer who was taking care of an estate of an elderly woman whose husband had the 1950 Bowman set autographed that year. Apparently, he kept all the correspondence and envelopes along with the autographed cards in a box up in the attic for 66 years until his passing. I was fortunate enough to get some very rare, autographed cards of Dizzy Trout, Mickey Harris, Bill Swift, Vern Stephens and George Sternweiss - and a great story! This one has been great. We're the same age Mike, but I find as I get older, I tend to look back on my childhood and try to get a little bit of that back through video games, 1980's movies and sports cards. I find this is universal with all sports card collectors whether it be Jefferson Burdick's generation, Lionel Carter's Greatest Generation, the Baby Boomers or Gen X. And I'll probably be playing video games and blasting Van Halen when I'm an old guy. I've found that the 1952 Topps Jackie Robinson is a much more difficult card than the Mantle in that set. Same with the Hoyt Wilhelm and Pee Wee Reese and Roy Campanella. And people wont like this, but I think the 1952 Topps set is overrated.
Hot take alert!
All well said, Ryan. And I’ll be chasing nostalgia this weekend by seeing the new Mario movie.
@@JunkWaxHero Have fun, I hear it's a fun flick and I found something really disturbing - I'm terrible at video games. Though I do have a Raspberry Pi with 3,000 Nintendo, Arari and Sega Games. I highly recommend grabbing one. I just forgot how hard those Nintendo and Sega Games really were!
@@ryanmcclanahan8739 I’m terrible at modern games but can still kick butt at Mario Kart
I would love to find something like that in my attic!! Cool story...and no, I would not go public with it.
Mike, I have no words!
This was awesome my friend
I dug out my face ball cards from when I was younger about a year ago after hearing about the insane value of some of these cards. They have not seen the light of days for over 30 years. I have 3 shoe boxes full of 1980 Topps and another box of 1950s and early 60s cards that I won in a football game bet. I want that box somewhere around 1984 or 1985. I about passed out as I was going through these cards due to what I found. LOL!
-------
22 - 1980 Topps Ricky Henderson in nearly perfect condition.
Of course, 1980 Nolan Ryan, Brett, Rose, etc...
** 1954, 55, (4)56, 57, 58 Topps Mickey Mantle
1953 Topps Willie Mays (it looked like someone crumpled it up in their hand and flattened it back out.
1953, 55 Jackie Robinson
1954, 56 Ted Williams
2 - 1960 Carl Yastrzemski
And much more
Wow!!! Amazing score!
My dad who is 82 told me as a kid that he would go to the store buy a pack of baseball cards and throw the cards in the trash on the way out the door while chewing the gum.
Oh man
he forgot to tell you the store owner would pick the cards in the trash
Amazing 🤩
80k for the Mantle 8 is a steal!
Agreed!
Damn, at least put a reserve price on the auction!
Fake news that PSA 8 sold for 420k
@@ericb4498 yep, someone else pointed out that PSA’s website is wrong. I’ll make a correction soon.
My dad passed away last june and he had a massive collection of vintage,he was really good friends with a guy called Mr Mint AL Rosen...
I'm a huge collector and after my dad passed a few months later I started looking through his collection and I was just blown away...I remember Mr Rosen wanting a lot of cards and memorabilia from my dad and the 1 thing that I still have is the original Babe Ruth picture the famous picture of him with him holding the bat on his shoulder it's black and white...The Hall Of Fame reached out to my dad a few times asking if he wanted to donate it to the HOF,but my dad rejected the request..
My Dad did shows with AL and the 1st show I went to was at MSG and they had guys like Mantle and Strawberry signing autographs..I haven't really even got into my dad's cards I just went through some and my 1st cards I came across were some 61 Maris cards,Koufax, Bobby Orr rookies...When I have more time I will get into his really nice stuff and I know for a fact my dad has some great cards.
Crazy thing about your video is my name is Eddie and my brother is John!
I enjoy your videos I just created my own channel for cards and I enjoy doing maildays and opening boxes..
Have a great day...
Sorry to hear about your dad!
@Junk Wax Hero thank you I appreciate it,my dad got Me into cards when I was a kid,my 1st card that got me into it was the 1984 Topps Don Mattingly..
Some people are sooo fricken lucky.
Fun story, there are a lot of great collections out there that don't make it into the social or news media.
That’s the fun of it
Omg that Sad Sam Jones card at the top in perfect shape is a high number rookie in perfect condition. That card sells for 500ish WITH CORNERS MISSING and creases. (Its probably worth a few thousand.....pennies compared to the Jackie's and Mantle's but I WOULD LOVE that Jones. Im 3 cards shy of a 1952 Indians team sets and all 3 are high numbers.
Dude will be FOREVER financially set 💰💰💰
Great video! Oh the dreaded cards in the trash. I have a worse story for you. My Dad had moved out of his parents house in the late 60’s and his Mother gave all of his cards to some friend of the family’s 6 year old who was visiting. If that wasn’t bad enough, the cards were almost complete sets of Topps from 1952-1960! All of the future hall of famers. Mantle cards. You name the player and they were in this collection. He didn’t find out about this until months later and by then it was too late to get them all back. He has a hard time talking about today. I can’t imagine how that could have put my current card business in the forefront of todays hobby.
OUCH! That’s brutal
@@JunkWaxHero and to add to the story. In the late 80’s I went to visit my grandmother and discovered an old clubhouse behind the house and inside I could see remnants of some of the cards. The were destroyed by the weather over the years. It was only about 30-40 cards so the rest were obviously taken after the original give. But that kid must have been playing with them there. I had no idea why the cards were there until my Dad told me his story a few years ago. When I told him what I had seen, you could see his heart just sink.
@@JonsSportsCards oh no!
Ah yes,.....the classic story about a mother or grandmother or SOME WOMAN of the family giving away ANYBODY and EVERYBODY else's shit EXCEPT for their own. Lord have mercy for the male who had the balls to throw out a few dozen of their WORTHLESS shoes or purses......
My dads first cousin who is gone now but he had a bunch of cards from the late 40s thru the early 70s. I remember dad saying he had a bunch of Jackie Robinsons and Mickey mantles. Said he had multiple of the mantle rookies both topps and bowman. Said he had multiple of every mantle up to his last year and had all the star players and multiple of each. Said that’s all he spent his money on was cards. Said he would open them and set them in something to protect them. Idk what he used dad said but said he never played with em threw them around nothing said he literally treasured them and always handled them with care. Always said these cards are gonna be worth money some day. Well fast forward to years later before he got cancer and died guess they were cleaning his house out to move or whatever and his sister threw all the cards away. Said they ain’t worth nothing. And I found this out pry around 15-20 years ago and I was talking to my dad a few years ago and was showing him the different cards and said he had all those and showed them what they were selling for in various grades and my dad couldn’t believe it. To think he had 3 kids that coulda got those cards and done something with them. EVERYTIME I think of it I get sick to my stomach. I’ve even talked to his kids a few times about it and they literally tell me not to talk about it cause they too get sick. Not saying his cards would be high grades but dad said the way he treated his cards was like gold. Just had to share that.
There are plenty of both cards and autographs that are in old time collections that haven't seen the light of day in forever. Only when the collector passes on will we start seeing them hit the market again. Fun story.
Yeah it’s crazy
Think how much more junk wax will be unearthed in the next 20-30 years from us 40-50 year olds..😂
@@jakestoe ugh let’s not talk about it
@@JunkWaxHero 🤣😂
When I was growing up one of the first stories I had ever heard about Babe Ruth as a player playing baseball was a neighbor of mine had told me while he was a young kid in the 1920's he had a relative that was big on trying to find the 1914 Babe Ruth Rookie card. So when they found his collection of Babe Ruth cards after he passed on they said they found 4 cards from 1914 in his poesession and had a expert come out and take control of the cards and said it was such a high dollar amount that information wasn't told on all the cards they found bc of their value and worth. Soo I can imagine that each card he had of Babe Ruth was probably in prestine and in great condition.
I’ve been saying for a long time. Many more than these are around. The pops will continue to go up. A lot of us old dudes with tons of cards stocked away.
Agreed
Ya know, I'm not a selfish guy, I'd be satisfied to find just one :)
Ha me too
What time zone are going live at 11. What an incredible story. Keep them coming Mike.

Awesome, thank you!
@@JunkWaxHero BUT now I have the song Juke Box Hero stuck in my head. LOL
@@Forkemdvls you’re welcome 😅
@@JunkWaxHero 😄
Yeah, my grandmother threw away my dads cards when he went into the Army in 1953. My father did manage to hide some of his cards from 1948-53 but no Mantles were in that box. I sent some into PSA and most of the grades were PSA 6 to PSA 8. My father was the only child so they were in excellent condition.
Wow!
Holy crap !
Wow,Wow,Wow.
Ahhh my aunt who hated her brother. My dad on purpose through out a shoe box of all 1940-60s all Yankees my dads team.. he said he remembered having at least 10 of mickeys rookie cards in his bike spokes to make it sound like a motorcycle .. and he kept them wrapped too.. think of a 1952 topps pack..
Ouch
One of my favorite stories. I’ll tell you what 80,000. Is not out of reach for that Mantle ☺️
Why do you think it went so low? I"m curious?
@@dancalmpeaceful3903 no idea, but someone got a Christmas present for sure
My grandmother threw away my uncle's baseball cards and comic books. All from the 40's and 50's.
Ouch
People who struggle their whole life financially and don't have any respect for their kid's belongings..happens over and over again, it's wild..try believing in your kids folks..
@@djmoonchild01 Tell my parent's that......I was collecting stuff (not baseball cards) in the late 70's and early 80's but my parents NEVER let me spend my money on WHAT I wanted....even THOUGH it was MY money. I"d be a lot richer than I am today if they had just let me do what I wanted back then. They were also the fools who sold all their mutual fund shares in 2008.....Me? I kept buying and buying shares and made a mint.
I call shenanigans!!!
I'd stay private,but personally I think they could've gotten more $$$😮
What a great story imagine what the price increase if they held onto it for a couple more years
Exactly
I would have snatched that PSA 8 up for 80K in a second!
Wow I think this right here is every true blooded collectors dream to come across a box of cards a box of vintage cards like this I swear to God I've had dreams about it lol stopping that yard sales and finding the old box slap full of baseball cards from the '50s to me honest to God to me that would be more exciting than when in the Powerball and I mean that with all my heart I can't think of any other thing in this world that would not make me more excited to find something like that I mean hell I just came across small deals small collections and got so happy that I felt like dancing could you imagine cleaning out an old house or an attic and finding something like this I would drop to my knees and start crying with happiness I really really would lol
I wouldn't even give my real first name
My uncle collected a lot in the 50s and since my grandparents owned a deli they came across a lot of cards. Until my grandma gave them away in the 70s.
Ouch
I’d sell most……but I’d keep a couple of the big ones for my family when I’m gone
Known as the guy who sold 5 priceless psa 8 cards
Truth is always stranger than fiction.
Think if they waited just a year and a half later, their sales probably would've doubled! A PSA 6 Jackie Robinson sold last night on PWCC for 30k..
So curious how the sale prices would’ve differed, post-pandemic.
🤯
So an 8.5 went for $800K and an 8.0 went for $80K. Something ain't right.
Cool find mantle ,that bird on the rack is nice as well wanna trade it?
Thanks but no. PC only
Would an auction house charge you a flat rate to authenticate your baseball cards, or would they do the same outrageous thing that PSA, SGC, and others do and charge you more to grade a card that's worth a lot? (In this case, over $13K per card!) Just curious.
Man: Where should we say they came from?
Bootlegger: I dont know. Well say you found them in your basement
I don’t know what this means exactly, but I always wonder if these “finds” are truly finds or if they’re just cover stories to pump up excitement for the auctions.
@@JunkWaxHero I read man finds five Mantles and then wrote that comment.
@@JunkWaxHero more like marketing
@@JunkWaxHero if an auctioneer house is involved, you never know. Thats just the reality of that slime.
To answer your question I'd keep my name private to protect my family and house. A security deposit box at a bank would be another good option to protect the asset.
You are mistaken sir, FYI no 52 Topps Mantle PSA 8’s sold for 80k in 2018, the card was sold for 420k as per the Heritage website states (the PSA website made an error & it is incorrect on that card). I follow the market closely since 2015 & distinctively remember the sales back in 2018 & it definitely sold for 420k. You have to go way back to 2012 to see any PSA 8s sales in the 80k range.
Thank you! I’ll make note of this on an upcoming video.
nope my cousin bought 3 mantles for various prices
Evan Mathis’ Mantle lol,altered
I feel like there's someome with a printing press,to many of these kind of cards are just popping up all the sudden.
Urban Legend I heard sme story but was 6 Babe Ruth found
There are only two baseball Icons Ruth & Mantle there is nobody else close-every story about these two are Baseball,,
Cobb? Gehrig? Paige (Satchel)?......
Arron , shoeless Joe Koufax

Wow they gog low balled.
I'm scratching my head over a psa 8 Mantle going for $80k. Someone made a good purchase.
Agreed
80k for a PSA 8 Mantle was a steal!!!
Yea, what's an 8 going for now? At least a million right?
@@djmoonchild01 last 8 sold publicly over a year ago for $1.56 million. Probably a cool mil now.

They say what you don't want the devil to know... Don't say out loud...
ANONYMOUS!!!!
Why would the 9 sell for millions and the 7 sell for 200k.? Blatantly zero sense in the market all a scam
I really don't understand why parents, especially mothers, are so selfish that they'd throw their kids property away like it's nothing
weird habit. i can confirm this. females are weird
Right?? Happened to my dad. He was born in 1944, big Yankee fan, and especially Mickey Mantle. Prime collecting years were 1952-60. He went off to college in 1962 and my grandmother threw the whole collection in the trash. He told me, "I had them all. In multiples." I don't think he ever forgave her for that.
All I ever find in my basement is junk wax baseball cards 😞
Me too!
All I ever find is my wife's massive worthless old shoe collection.....
I would let my name be out there, why not 🤷🏻♂️
funny you mention the story of your dad getting his cards thrown away. The same thing happened to my Dad and he's told me stories of his Mantle collection, who was his favorite player (like other kids at the time). I can only imagine the amount of money sitting at the bottom of landfills from kid's card collections from the 50's that got bounced. Funny thing is it always seems to be someone's mother who threw away their card collection, never the father (guess Dad's knew better). 🙂
So many trashed cards!
Dad's were too busy trying to protect their Playboy magazines and keep their beer hidden in the garage.
So in 2018 a trimmed card was sold for almost 3 million?
How does the Mantle 8 only sell for 80,000? When the 8.5 goes to 800K?
Yeah I have no idea.
It sold for 420k not 80k
I don't remember the guy's name who owns it he was talking about it on a UA-cam show
I would definitely not want my last name revealed. I'm not on social media either. I want privacy.
Smart
Social media is bad...it just gets you in trouble......DON'T publicize yourself OR what you do on it.
I wonder what's common/ nearly worthless today that would bring big money in 60 years?
Good question!
8.5 for 800k ++++. Psa 8 for 80k. Something isn’t right
ALWAYS be private when it comes to money matters.....otherwise money-grubbers like my cousin WILL come find you. I'm NOT kidding.....she WILL.
Curse my inferior basement
Don’t believe it
Also no thanks on the auct6, I'd sell them myself, fools go to a auction.
They could have and should have got a few million for those.
Those prices they sold for are just slaps in the face ... Smh PSA grades low just to keep rare cards rare. It's all bs, just like the Art world
He found or his daddy misplaced … too many people claiming collectors with hand me down collections
I wouldn't really care if my name was made public, I don't really do much social media and I would actually enjoy telling people that I barely know or people that I don't know that I will not give them money.
Hahaha comment of the week!
That is unbelievable. And, yes, I bought the cards and not for the gum. I disliked the gum
Yeah the gum was bad after like 5 seconds
@@JunkWaxHero that Mantle PSA 8 was a steal at what it sold for!
@@Mikeygee99 agreed!
Ed is now missing........
lol poor Ed
I had a friend who owned a sports card store in Phx back in the 90's and he went to help his friend clean out his friends father's house in Chicago. When they got to the attic they found an unopened case of 1952 Topps and after they opened the case up, they had 75 Mickey Mantles RC's and 90 Willie Mays RC's. He became a millionaire over night . The Mantle's were going for between 25.000 and 50.000 each and the Mays was going for 10.000 each. Apparently the guys dad had worked for Topps and he stashed that case way back in the early 50's
Isn't that the Mr. Mint story?
how many are in existence??
No one knows
Wait psa does half points when grading now?
Since 2008
Damn where the hell have I been lol. Is it only on sports cards? I’m not sure I’ve ever seen a half point on any tcg cards that’s why I’m surprised to see it.
But vintage is a “safe” investment right? 😂
If they are star players like Mantle, Robinson, Cobb, Ruth, Paige etc. Yes
