  • The "Mr. Mint" Al Rosen attic find of 1952 Topps baseball cards is maybe the most famous attic find of all-time. It included the Mickey Mantle that sold in 2022 for $12.6 million after being graded a 9.5 by SGC. Here's the story.

Why don't you do a follow up video to this breaking down the estimated value of what the entire find would bring today? Also, see if you can put together a list of sales of any of the cards from the find. I know it would be tough to do but it would be interesting to get your take on it. For this I have subscribed to your channel.

Rosen spent 2 days at my house in the mid 1990s. He bought a significant portion of my dads collection . He was very fair and considerate. There’s a lot of stories out there… he was a character for sure. He had many many “ finds” that are just as interesting as the 1952T hoard. Todays “ investors” are complete amateurs compared to his sports card knowledge and savvy!

PHENOMENAL JOB! I remember this story as early as 1987-1988. It's the one we all dream of.
From what I've read, 1952 High numbers came out between Aug/Sept 1952 and Sept/Oct 1952 when Football season was just starting. Kids usually abandon baseball for football, so this was definitely a culprit to why high numbers are scarce.
As for the 1952 case dumps, it was actually 1960 and not 1952 that they were dumped in the Atlantic. Topps owned a warehouse that they decided to clean up in 1960. They discovered all the cases and possibly OTHER cases too! Well guess what, Sy Burger said DUMP IT ALL. And away went HUNDREDS of cases of sports cards into the Atlantic :(

I knew Al Rosen for 20 years and have mixed feelings about the man. He was always friendly to me, and we had some interesting conversations but also told me that if I ever wrote about him, he'd sue me. He was a man of his word too so I never did, I've never met a collector or dealer who was spoken to by the FBI more than him and his dealings in the All-Star Cafe Wagner case left me thinking that he knew the card was stolen. Last time I saw hi he told me he wasn't going to live very long and sure enough he didn't. That last conversation really bothers me. He's also the one who jacked up the values of Mickey Mantle's cards in the mid-to late 1970's and 1980's trying to corner the market in New York and even Baseball Cards Magazine took notice in 1981. I've got a couple of autographed business cards he gave me the last time.

You did a great job telling the story. There is a guy that I know that is rumored to have one of those runs that Mr Mint was selling. I need to ask that guy the next time I see him. I was with Rosen for a couple buying trips to Canada. I knew him from shows and I knew how to cross the border legally and without too much of a hassle. He was a wholesale buyer, and some people were offended by his wholesale offers. His offer was basically the same for similar condition cards for everyone. I had a great time hanging out with him, and we always talked at shows. He had some great stories.

Mr. Rosen had at least 3 "Find" discoveries. (i.e. Find #2, Find #3). This, of course, would have been the 1st FIND, as he had to borrow money to help him with the purchase.
He always put out a full-page letter in SPORTS COLLECTORS DIGEST and BASEBALL HOBBY NEWS after The National, and commended the event organizers for a job well done (I think he liked Anaheim and Atlantic City's shows the most).
He was a longtime critic of card grading (PSA and CSA both started in 1991 as the first 2 companies, but CSA was gone within about 10 years). It took a few years before Mr. Mint finally changed his tune, and became a strong supporter of the industry.
He always had a 1 or 2 page ad in every weekly copy of SCD and BHN to tell of his newest items up for sale, and to tell of which upcoming shows he would be attending, in case someone had anything significant sports collectible (or collection) that he might want to buy.
His collection was amazing, but I could only afford to "window shop" and marvel at his most recent purchases.

This was an amazing find then, but can you imagine finding them now? Literally counting values into the 100s of millions! Crazy.
John had a near complete 52 set, only missing 5 high number commons. He also had 5 1952 salesman sample panels that were used to show stores these cards prior to their release. PSA has only graded 2 3-card panels and SGC had done none prior to ours. The 1st one to sell ends tomorrow night on eBay. John considered those panels his Rosen find and called the guy he split them with Mr. Mint.

I met Al Rosen at several baseball card shows in PA in the 1980s. He taught me a valuable life lesson when I was a kid. He showed me a baseball card in one hand and a $100 bill in the other. He said, "Kid, this thing is a piece of cardboard. And this is money." Rosen was a lot different than most middle aged enthusiasts I met at those card shows. He showed little interest in the actual sport of baseball, it's history, or memorabilia in a general sense. He was a hype man who cared about one thing, making money. He was a dealer surrounded by nostalgia addicts, like my father. He was a harbinger of the death of baseball cards as a working class hobby. Now, it's a tax dodge for rich people.

In the late 70's and 80's there were many card dealers and card shops. I would easily guess there were more card shops then than today! Mr Mint was a promoter but really a jerk. At card shows his table was always juxta positioned at the entrance so his table was the first table you saw and came in contact with. His business style was to put you and your cards down (while carefully scanning your cards), then after putting you down and wiping the saliva from the side of his mouth, he'd try to buy your cards at a a huge discount. The more he put you down the more he wanted your cards. It was kind of despicable technique. He was not respected by collectors. My guess when Rosen went outside to get some "air" he probably pocketed a few cards. If he were a nice guy he could have made a lot more money
On a positive note he did help expand the hobby.

Ha thanks. I wish I had the time to make better ones. I did one (history of bowman baseball cards) and really enjoyed it and think it came out nicely, but it took too long.

Find great - Rosen was unfortunately an asshole. I remember him at a show in the early 90s where I showed him a binder of early 50s football and he basically dropped it out of his hands from 1 1/2 feet back onto the table while saying he wasn't interested. Also remember him boycotting the National because he didn't get front placement. I wish his family well.

But he can drop dead again and again and again. He yelled one time much later on as I walked into the Chicago Sun Times show asking me what I had. I told him I remember him from back in the day and I would rather burn them than sell to him. His partners laughed.

Bought a card from him and wasn’t happy with it. Sent it back for a refund as per his policy. He called my home and yelled at my wife about it. I was at work. She said to call back and talk to me. He didn’t. What a cowardly ass he is.

I wasn’t aware of that video until someone linked it in comments. I linked directly to an article that summarized it.
