Have you read Qizeaqfile's Dark Souls comic? It covers the period leading up to the war between Gwyn's forces and the ancient dragons. The Nameless King is one of the main characters. Beautiful Berserk-style artwork and a savvy take on the lore! Not a lot of people seem to know about it, but I think you'll dig it.
gregvalou i read it quite a while ago, it might have been incomplete at that stage. I reaaaaally liked the art work but I couldn’t get into the dialogue. Maybe I’ll give it another look.

You all keep forgetting the most badass character of all: Sieglinde of Catarina, the daughter of Siegmeyer. She traversed Lordran to find her father and she is NOT undead, she's human. Any death would have ended her and yet she managed to survive and succeed in her mission.

Bit of correction here. Painting lady needed BLOOD of the dark soul, but pygmy blood dried long ago so gael was forced to consume them and the dark soul, making blood of the dark soul his own
Yes that's what he realized when his blood fell onto the sword it's what gave him that extra strength to perform his last stand
I'm missing Patches in the top 3. This motherfucker kept himself sane and undead through 2000+ years just by his own will (and by punishing people for their sins).

He only fights when it is completely necessary (or when some cleric needs some ass kickin).
Has a secret heart of gold. He's extremely loyal, and can't admit he wants to help you.
He's the last human at the end of the world and without time warping tricks unlike The Ashen One!
His laughs are the only non-ironic/sad ones in the whole trilogy. He's genuinely having fun... Sometimes.
Charismatic AF, would forgive again.

Was looking for a like minded fellow. Patches is underrated. Gael number 1 and Patches number 2 I terms of badassitude in the Souls series. Not even close in my opinion.

Actually, Gwynn "sacrifice" was the worst thing that could be happening to humanity.
1- It prolonged the Age of Fire, which had the shrunk the Age of the Dark in between the Age of Fire and the Age of Deep Sea. The Age of Dark should be the age where humanity would be on its strongest. Basically, he prolonged the age of fire so much, that the Age of the Deep Sea (Aldritch Lore) is coming much faster than it should.
2- Created the undead curse,. This way, the humans are basically coal to the fire. They will collect the souls to burn in the fire or go hollow.
3- His son, the Nameless King sided with the dragons after seeing the slaughter Gwynn was doing. The Dragons were already defeated, but Gwynn drove them to almost extinction. That would be true if the Nameless King didn't interfere to protect them.
4- I would say that he prolonged the age of fire in fear of what humanity would do with the gods (like him) when it would be the strongest. In a way, humanity never reached it´s peak because of him. In the end, it didn't matter, since the gods died anyway, leaving humanity with the undead curse which compels them to link the fire and prolong the Age of Gods, with no god.
He's just a selfish coward that's afraid of the dark, like a child that needs a night light constantly turned on

Ok to be honest I think Artorias and Gael should have their spots switched. Artorias failed his mission and Gael literally made it to the end of the world as one of the last beings existing! True, and we never really saw him at full power, we only saw his burnt-out husk after he linked the fire and already split his soul several times..... though he should still lose a point for being afraid of the dark. A Gwyn vs. Gael fight would actually be pretty interesting now that I’m thinking about it

Completely agree with you. In my opinion people find hard to move on from something that they have already invested in. For example eventhough Gael's legend is far more buff than Artorias's , most people will think otherwise.

I was gonna say, that's probably the fairest pick of them all. I mean c'mon we even beat Gael, the only other living creature who made it to the end of the world. A mere undead, unfit to link the flame, destined to suffer many a death, yet we prevail.

Gael is number 1. He isnt forgetful without a reason.... he lived till the end of time. He did what Gwyn never could. He let go of the flame and embraced the dark. Thats the final lesson from dark souls 3.... everyone had been trying to extend things past their intended end... and thats where the unded curse came from. Its about letting go.... and making something new.

Personally I think the ivory king deserves more, i mean the guy knew she was a child of the abyss but he still married and protected her, and because of him she turned to the good side, and if I recall he purposely built the city over the old chaos to contain it, that’s what those badass pets were for as well as those golems and the very walls themselves, also he put his own throne right in front of the entrance to the old chaos so he would be the first line of defense, and when he knew chaos was about to break loose he left his entire kingdom and the responsibility for containing the chaos to his wife, (a child of manus), who he knew she would do anything he asked of her, and took off to fight the chaos face to face knowing full well he would lose, but he did it for the sake others.
Ivory King is an absolute Badass... to bad I hate the charred loyce knight gank in his fight...

Mind you, the dark soul was it that granted the things that lived before the war with the dragons humanity, and it was most likely discovered after the other three souls but before the war with the dragons.

I think the ivory king should get an extra point for being 1 of the few actually good people in dark souls(the four knights of Gwyn are pretty cool people)
also: He trusted that his wife (who like good ol' Nash was born of the abyss) would do good and she did. That is much more than Vendrick, or the king of Shulva achieved.

I honestly feel like Artorias is getting a bit underrated by some of these comments just because he failed his mission. He was sent to quell the Abyss *alone.* Let that sink in. He was such a badass that Gwyn decided to send him to fight a literal army of dark monsters without sparing a single extra soldier to help him out.
I don’t think any other character on this list would’ve succeeded in his quest. Sure, he failed, but when we find him, he’s bringing out every last bit of his strength to wrestle with the Abyss that’s corrupting him, he’s still trying to take out as many Abyssal creatures as he can, and he can still whoop our asses with his goddamn off-hand. He also loves dogs, so that’s instantly +100 badass points.
Gael. He "lived" and fought to the end of time and returned the dark soul of man, which means he absorbed nearly every bit of humanity scattered through the world. If a cute girl would ask Gael to quell the abyss, then he would do it with shocking dedication. He would fight, die and fight some more, and he would not only succeed, he would succeed with style and russian hardbase music. There would be no abysal creature left after this little red riding hood is done with his mission. The forgetfulness has to be forgiven, he was around for longer than anyone, and we dont now how long he hunted down the fragments of the dark soul until we meet him at the end of time.
But no one will remember what Gael did, because almost no one in the world knows about the world in the painting. Gael saved some magic paint, whilst Artorias set out on a mission to save the World. Plus Gael has no doggo.

I'm not saying Artorias is not a absolute badass, but Gael is on another level. Lorewise he didn't beat the chosen undeads ass, the chosen undead fought and defeated a weakened artorias. Beeing corupted might've made him stonger than he was at his peak. Also i'm more of a cat person, so Ivory King is more badass too in my opinion.

Wolnir's death animation is the most terrifying animation in the series. He gets dragged down into the abyss, in full terror he tries to scream but he's just a skeleton.
What I don't like about him is how he is seemingly so important and powerful, but outside of his bossfight he really seems to have little to no influence over the world, other than maybe the connection to Yhorm (which could've also been the Giant Lord from DS2, so it's not clear if it was Wolnir who is the ancestor of Yhorm). Lothric is supposedly the capital of the world, where the most important shit takes place (First Flame, Old Royalty, etc.) and yet Wolnir is this super powerful conqueror nobody has heard of. That, and how did this guy just pop out of nowhere? Is he connected to the Old Royalty in any way? How about the Giants from DS1 or DS2? If not, what is he? Just some guy (a human?) who conquered, gathered and consumed souls and thus grew in size? It seems inconsistent and wishy washy to me. Kinda like the devs just threw together a bunch of stuff and didn't really care to make it fit, putting the burden of making it fit on the lore enthusiasts who will read into it too far.
I wish his boss fight was an actual duel like Logarius in Bloodborne tbh. Good points.
Some say that Wolnir is the player character of DS2 but since I haven't played that much I won't agree to that theory.
On a side note carthus was just another kingdom in the many lines of kingdom that was build and collapsed , you don't actually get to see the Kingdom of Carthus , you just see the burried remains of its Catacombs after the Undead Legion swiped trough the place.
Carthus was this big glorious kingdom that took kingdoms at the size of Lothric and many others under its rule and the fact that now there is only catacombs left should be enough to understand that even such mighty legends are forgotten, just like Artorias who lost its name and became "The Wolf Knight" in DS3.
The thought of his story being inconsistent and wishy washy is kinda analogous to ds3 as a whole. A lot of stories in that game just feel incomplete. Take for instance Sirris’ quest. It feels like have of it just got deleted and nobody bothered to redo it

I really like that this video selects and compares badasses from *all three Dark Souls* . Scholar of the Sin is often recieving so much bashing. This is like to see reunited family. :D And the music from Berserk is obviously amazingly good choice for the background. :)

no downsides to artorias? he died a loser if you think about it. your character has to clean up his mess. also, there's nothing ingame which definitively states artorias and ciaran are in love. i believe gough hints at ciaran harboring feelings for artorias but nothing about whether he felt the same. hell, the only time they're mentioned together is when the Four Knights of Gwyn are explicitly named.

Technically, by that logic, everyone in dark souls is a loser. The ones who can die, did, by the end of time, and the ones who can't, such as the chosen undead, the unkindled one, Gael, ect. Died many times, therefore losing.
Then again, this is dark souls we're talking about, so..

Bet all these butthurt Artorias haters can't beat him, which is why they complain. Also he's injured and battling a mental war against the abyss whilst fighting against you. He's no loser as the only reason he was defeated is that he valued the lives of others over his own, saving Sif his wolf compagnon. And we do no clean up his mess, we avenge him and save his honor. We traveled through time and because many would not understand or believe this, Elizabeth makes the decision to keep us out of the legend.
And cleaning up his mess? Artorias didn't cause the Abyss outbreak, the Oolacile citizens did, influenced by (presumably) Kath the Primordial Serpent
Righteous list, appreciate the fleshing out of all the choices and the reasoning for their positions, big ups for showing love to my overlooked favs of DS2. Also I agree, Slave Knight Gael is the best boss fight in all of Souls.

When the old chaos awoke beneath his kingdom he placed his throne at the very edge of chaos, being the first line of defense for his people instead of hiding behind his subjects.
Fighting of waves of demons for generations tirelessly.
Not to mention he also had a hot abyss wife, knew she was from the abyss but loved her anyways and was so badass she eventually went against her own nature to support him.
PS: Artorias should be on this list but lower, since much of what he is known for is actually done by the player and not himself :P

earlier in the video, and wasn't Artorias *technically* defeated three times?
1: He and Siv lost to Manus
2: After giving his Shield to protect Siv (and also the fact that his arm was broken so he couldn't use it anymore anyway), which on one hand could be considered a win cuz saving the animals is always a +, he was taken by the Abyss, so you could say he 'lost' to the Abyss itself.
3: Artorias, a mighty champion (presumably) of the same mighty race as the Silver and Black Knights (tall as hell, impossibly thin, long heads) lost in a 1V1 to some random Undead who one day happened to stroll into the Arena where what remained of him was located.

Ik im almost 4 yrs late for this but the only reason he did lose was because of sif so he either got a chance to kill manus after seeing sif get stabbed or he saves sif and gets beaten by manus it was that simple not only that he is skinny but we have to remember he would have been and even more annoying boss fight if he had none of his arms broken not only that his gear in the games is still pretty darn good all tho he did get credit for what we the player did i think its only deserving because literally decades or 1 or 2 centuries after his death a group o f warrior battle the abyss using him as inspiration not only that ornstein was the leader of the 4 knight of anor londo but he wasnt the strongest since that title goes to artorias because why would gwyn send artorias and not ornstein if ornstein was the best of all four of them

Huge missed opportunity to not include Elder Prince Lorian. That guy was pure badassery, slayed the Demon Prince by himself, and even while crippled from the curse, he's still one of the most difficult bosses in the game. He was very caring of his brother, and was not in support of linking the fire, which is worth a gold medal.
Mad respect for playing that theme at the end.

Sieglinde of Catarina. She traveled to Lordran, made it to the Dukes Archives, and even Ash Lake... all while being human, not undead. No rekindling at a bonfire or being powered up by souls for her, just pure badassery.
Honestly considering that Vendrick essentially has done what both dark souls one and dark souls two’s protagonists did(fighting four lords to gain a position of power) and then was smart enough to trick Nashandra into having basically nothing, he’s one of my favorite dark souls characters.

Lmao I LOVE that you used the track “Guts” from 1997 Berserk for Artorias.
So many youtubers that make videos like this use just totally random music from different franchises and it’s awful. This however, was a very tasteful move since Artorias is widely considered to be based off of Guts.

I think you actually missed a really interesting badass. Sieglind from Ds1. She wasn’t one of the strongest characters ever but she was able to make it basically all the way across Lordran without being undead. What this means is that she has done a lot of the things that the Chosen Undead did but without dying a single time. It also means she was EXTREMELY brave for coming to probably the most dangerous place in the world at that time knowing that she would die for real if she did die.

Excuse me? Artorias gets points for being a lady's man and the Ivory King DOESN'T? IK literally compassioned so hard on a shard of Manus that she WILLINGLY stayed after his consumption in fire to guard the world against the old chaos. He literally REDEEMED a CHILD OF DARK through sheer wholesomeness and romantic energy and you're telling me ARTORIAS deserves the point with the ladies more!?
From what I gathered from item describtions in DS 2 the Ivory King did not accedentily build Eleum Loyce above the Old Chaos, he built it there after he learned of the Old Chaos.
