I used to watch this happen in the yard at Kings X from York Road platform as they started up then shuffled back and forth to get to the platforms. Good memories.
My first visit to KX was the hot summer of 76 managed to prize myself away from Reading and the Westerns for one day and what a day copped 11 Deltics doing exactly what you say shunting up and down in that little refuelling depot.
Gracious, that's today! That's very quick work putting this up. That's one if the cleanest cold starts I've seen from a Deltic, and hardly any smoke once it was running
Loved watching these hammering round the bend through Peterborough at full chat on the through line going north. They also picked up pretty damn quick off the platform as I made extensive use of my East Midlands Rail Rover between Peterborough and Doncaster (and back).😀
Excellent.No19 looks in good nick.Majestic Deltic and good to hear the thrum. And to think it is coming up to 43 years since they were retired from BR!!
What a machine this and the other 21 were spent many many hours watching them cruise effortlessly on the ECML in the 70’s mainly at York and the paint job here looks fantastic thanks for posting and so quickly rings back so many memories of my youth 👍
Went on this today , excellent experience with the family , although busy enjoyed it , a success for the railway cafes , tea rooms were doing well nice breakfast in tthe butler Henderson cafe , thanks for sharing so quickly
I used to work on these at Finsbury Park depot, and if you weren`t flavour of the month if you started both engines in the shed. The fumes coudl be extracted by the roof fans but the drone of the engines echoing in the shed was deafening. We were always told to get it shunted outside if possible.
Very nice! I’m here too. The reason the deltic failed earlier is because they tried to switch what engine was being used and there wasn’t enough battery in the engine.
@ yh its wonderful up close, driver is one of the seasoned ones too so proper gave it some and it was the 5MT’s driver’s last ever time driving a steam loco; 64 years driving steam locos. Happy retirement to him.
Another lovely video well done great camera work as usual I am really looking forward to seeing your next video I hope you get a nice video next time also when is your next video going to be on UA-cam bye for now Philip
I think the reason that they only use 1 engine when running on a preserved line is to do with Fuel economy, I'm sure an ex BR fireman told me they use 3 gallons per mile when running on both engines
Why did the deltic diesel trains get retired when the class 37S are still being used as goods trains and other things like that I would have thought that the deltic diesel trains could be used as well
It always saddens me that the class 50 or rather the true son of Deltic never attracts the same attention yet is a equally capable express locomotive with a slightly faster top speed and better pullaway from start.
What I find strangely sad about this is, I remember both these loco types when they were working. I clearly remember them thundering through Manchester Victoria! Now, they're living in retirement, limited to heritage speeds. It's bittersweet. I LOVE the fact they're preserved and venerate those who work so hard, but I'd also like to see them on the main-line doing 100mph that they were designed for!

I did notice that myself - Surprising as it was pretty cold at the time 👍
Yesterday, it was 37s, and today a 55. It's not often the steam engines are upstaged, but a Deltic trumps a Std 5. Excellent as always.
Not to me mate. Steam is king! Mind Deltics are pretty cool too.

Love deltics. The sounds. They are beasts
You know something, this is the reason I bloody love trains 🔥

Marvellous. 'There be dragons! ' all over.

Nice video. You were there at the same time as me! The early bird catches the best shots! Nice one.

Great video. Thanks for all your videos this year.Happy New Year..😂
Thanks Ste - Happy NY also 👍

You can’t keep that beast caged up and out of the action 👌👍

A great departure from Quorn
Fantastic

just amazing seeing a Deltic start up looks liked it started one engine but great video hoping seeing you again in 2025
Amazing glad you saw it sad it failed at Quorn and Woodhouse apparently
Just a switch of engines and a temporary battery issue I believe. 🙏👍
Only a relatively short time and then it was on its way. Well worth the wait.
Steam heat boiler vans are such a cool idea, I wonder why they're not more common.
They used to more common, this one came Northern Ireland, I remember seeing it at Loughborough several years ago before it was repainted.
CIÉ/Irish Rail made a great deal of use of them, that's probably where this one is from
Another Great video 👍
Fantastic Video 🤞
It was good to see it running. They may turn the 2nd engine on later in the day
Think the 1650hp is enough for that duty lol........

Is there a connecting passage between the cabs?
What's the green tender/body off on the wagon in Quorn yard?
I believe that is from GWR 7027 Thornbury Castle. 👍
@@trainsplanes yes

GBRf did make use of 55022 on goods trains on a number of occasions. 37s are simpler electrically and more economical.

One engine only. Sad to see the Deltics in preservation only run as Type 3’s!!
The modern cars sort of spoil the vid and atmos'.
Shame only on one engine again.
One engine though.. :( its like using only one lung to breathe.
Indeed however one is better than none 👍
When the Deltics first came out, i used to watch the prototype come through Rugby on test.
I saw the deltic being towed south on route to the science museum through Rugby.
@@michaelkettell1057 was that the light blue one ? 🤔
@@JimmyHotspuryes, I think it's now in the museum at Shildon.
