Or, shockingly, the Bard is a good playwright, you just don't have the same tasted as people who like tragedy. Which is fine, you don't have to like the same things everyone does. That doesn't make Macbeth hard to understand *or* uninteresting.
So the the original GoW games probably took place around the height of the Greek city states period so about 4-800 BC. The story of Macbeth has some specific historical figures in it that place it right in the middle of about the 1050s. Now we also know that Mimir had been imprisoned in that tree for 120 years, and let's call it 4-5 years between GoW4 and this one. Meaning at minimum this game would be taking place in the very late 12th century, and more likely the 13th. For one that means Kratos is pushing as old as 2000 years old, and also as much as 90% of that time is unaccounted for of him wandering the world. Unless he spent a millennia wandering around Scandinavia not learning any of the local language and customs.
it's 3 years between God of War 2018 and God of War Ragnarok. also I've heard that there were comics taking place between GoW3 and GoW4 where Kratos went to Egypt for a bit, still doesn't account for anywhere near all the time he's been unaccounted for but does show that he's probably been travelling around the world.
Nah your maths way off. Height of the Greek pantheon, with Athens and Sparta battling it out was about 500bc, fimbulwinter occurs btwn 536-541AD according to real records so that's about 1000yrs in btwn
@@TheMrgoodmanners 500 bc is really accurate as kratos mentions in this game he kinda regrets not joining the 300 Spartans in the battle of thermopylae which happened at 480 BC
You cant take historic facts to try to make a timeline. I go that the games take place millenia before Birth of christ, the time where gods walked the earth. We know the Greek saga takes place over I wanna say 20 years more or less Kratos family dies, 6 months later is ascension, 10 years later is gow, chains happens in those ten years. Then ghost takes place Idk exactly is but I think gow 2 is at least 10 years after the 1 one, gow 3 starts right after 2 ends, gow Norse is 150 years later, ragnarok is 3 years after. I say Kratos is around 200 years old
Omg, i like how kratos was the first on the "physical or magical" He really is a lot more loose than last game, especially when it comes to making fun of the "Smartest. Man. Alive."
I love all of the indicatives that Mimir is Celtic. I just wonder what can be done for the next games with specific timeline. Since mimir and the real Tyr are back, they might know they way out of the 9 realms
This is why im so excited for the next game. I want to see this world of myth and story developed. My guess is that this is some kind of metaphysical reality born out of our collective conisous understanding of these stories. Like if Odin had put on the mask and looked through that tear in reality he would have just seen a high school English class reading stories about how much of a dick he is. Which would bring the thesis statement of the original games back into focus. Kratos is this random. Some dude no one has heard of before and he showed up in what should have been the same story that's been told a thousand times and he just fucked it all up. If the world is built around everyones preexisting understanding of the myths...then where did this asshole come from??
I mean the idea of there being other mythologies coexisting has been shown before. I think in God of War Chains of Olympus, Kratos fights the Persian King and later gains the powers of the Efreet. This means Persian and Arabian mythologies exist too so it ain’t too far off to think other mythologies can exist too.
In Norse mythology there's almost no information on Mimir's past, that's probably why the studio allows him to have all those adventures since it couldn't be disproven by the fanbase.
The dude always seems to start his stories exactly as I go to pull up to me destination. And I can't just *NOT* head his witty anecdotes, so there's easily an hour of gameplay where I just set the controller down so he can blather on about riddles or something.
If you want a good telling of it, I recommend the Fictional podcast, it's not as boring as the actual play at least in my opinion :) I listen to it on spotify but you can pretty much listen to it wherever
Please let us eventually get an Egyptian adventure, or maybe even an Aztec one. If Kratos thought Thor punching the World Serpent so hard it flew back in time was insane just wait till he learns about a world that went through five different suns.
Almost like it happened in the 12th century and Scandinavian looked like this also the story isn't based of real events the real macbeth was a good king who gained the throne properly
also subtle thing Atreus mentions that Mimir should write the stories down, is a allusion to the fact that much of Norse mythology is lost or rewritten. Almost all we know of it comes from one text and oral tradition.
I saw someone mention somewhere that Ragnarök might even be a Christian invention. The idea being that there's no reason to worship dead gods, or gods fated to die
My theater class has an entire ritual that you have to do if you ever dare speak the name of the Scottish play, you have to do a circle around the auditorium while speaking this chant that I don’t remember
So I know people say the next game will deal with Egyptian mythology, but judging by all the references to English legends and Celtic folklore and myths, I personally place my money on Celtic mythology being the next step. I think we’ll get to Egypt someday, if not, the next few games might mix mythologies together in some way, but for a one to one focus, I see Celtic mythology getting the next focus
I wonder how dickish they would need to make the Egyptian pantheon if it ever comes to that. The only one that really stands out as evil is Apophis, and it's more of a primordial embodiment of chaos than an outright deity.
Egypt might be a prequel since Kratos already visited that place in the comics. Atreus can go to Celtic pantheon to look for giants. That would make sense.
i dont really know to much about celtic mythos thats why i would want to see that. we see eguption mythos everywhere now so i wouldnt say it gets bland and boring but i would want to see some other mythos to and celtic isnt as much represented in media unless i just dont know about it . either way both are cool i just kinda want to see celtic a little more
Want to know a neat fact about Shakespeare's works? Any work of his whose title is the name(s) of the main character(s) is either a tragedy or a history, never a comedy. In other words, if you see a name, that person dies at the end. Also, none of his tragedies or histories are not named after the main character(s).
Shakespeare finds his book of Tales ages later after Theyve all gone theyre separate ways and becomes a Legend. Mimir is somewhere in Hel watching it through projection tear in his eye "Well Done, laddie" He says "i wish i could give you a standing ovation but, well, Those times have passed"
A few details that others have pointed out but I want to put in one comment: Mimir is saying this really happened instead of just being a play, meaning Macbeth (and perhaps more Shakespeare?) is canon to GoW. Macbeth’s name being cursed isn’t from the story itself. It’s a real life theater superstition that you can’t say the name “Macbeth” in the theatrical world or else you’ll have bad luck.
Considering one 90s Disney Show which litteraly added every god or spirit from folklore and shakespeare, Odin and aces included. Even Macbeth. This would be interesting, that Mimir decided to live like human as Shakespearex just like Puck or Titania.
This confirms a lot more about the backstory of Mimir or as we should call him Puck/Jack Goodfellow since Macbeth is generally considered a Celtic /English tale this really confirms him to be part of Oberon's court
So, Mimir is a product of Shakespearean drama, apparently. Does that mean if Atreus wanders far enough south, he'll stumble across Oberon? Because that's a powder keg of chaotic teenage godlings with good-intentioned mischief just waiting to happen, and I am HERE for it.
Love how Kratos and Atreus are both still annoyed at the “all threats physical or magical”. Like Baldur was such a huge pain in the ass to them they can only groan.
Atreus: Mimir.... I have a question.... Let's say hypothetically I fall in love with someone different like say... Thrud? I mean.... I'm a giant and... demigod..... while Thrud's an Aesir..... You think.... that love is possible?
If you played gow3 theres actually a quote from Macbeth, from Hermes's boss fight, he quotes "The spartan lights the way to a dusty death" this echoes Macbeths speech where he also quotes "And all our yesterdays have lighted fools The way to dusty death. Out, out, brief candle!" Macbeths also referenced as the character of baldur "immune to all threats physical and magical" and Macbeth being"immune to all man born of woman"
Honestly, can we just have Mimir narrating more plays? He's given us bits of Beowulf, a bit of that Scottish Play, a Midsummer Night's Dream, We definitely need some Julius Caesar, maybe even some Journey to the West. He's the Smartest Man Alive, so why not?
A direct father-to-father ancestor of mine Crinan of thane rose in rebellion against McBeth as he was the grandfather of Malcolm III. He had his son (another direct ancestor of mine) Maldred MacCrinan died at the battle od Dunkeld.
I knew this “physical or magical” part was coming before Mimir was about to finish it, and I said it at the same time with Kratos and Atreus. 😄 It’s funny how after four years since playing GoW before Ragnarok, it felt like it was like the first five times I heard him say that.
Funny how Mimir said he tries when atreus told him to write these stories down, as he actually was in the beginning of the game before he spits out the brush when you first see him. Either that or he was painting, idk.
I mean Mimir is literally Puck from A Midsummer Night's Dream, so this implies that Shakespeare's fantasy plays were all adaptations of stories told or inscribed by Mimir.
I love how both Atreus and Kratos groan about the “all threats physical and magical” thing. They’re really like a sitcom family now lol

also I've heard that there were comics taking place between GoW3 and GoW4 where Kratos went to Egypt for a bit, still doesn't account for anywhere near all the time he's been unaccounted for but does show that he's probably been travelling around the world.
GoW does not follow irl timeline
Nah your maths way off. Height of the Greek pantheon, with Athens and Sparta battling it out was about 500bc, fimbulwinter occurs btwn 536-541AD according to real records so that's about 1000yrs in btwn
@@TheMrgoodmanners 500 bc is really accurate as kratos mentions in this game he kinda regrets not joining the 300 Spartans in the battle of thermopylae which happened at 480 BC
You cant take historic facts to try to make a timeline.
I go that the games take place millenia before Birth of christ, the time where gods walked the earth.
We know the Greek saga takes place over I wanna say 20 years more or less
Kratos family dies, 6 months later is ascension, 10 years later is gow, chains happens in those ten years.
Man. Alive."
I could listen to Mimir’s stories all day
The "physical ir magical" line makes me giggle every time
If Kratos, Arteus and Mimir end up in Egypt I can't wait to hear his rendition of Cleopatra
She could easily be a character in such a game
Damn kratos is becoming a goof now. “Physical or magical!”
Goof Of War
I love all of the indicatives that Mimir is Celtic. I just wonder what can be done for the next games with specific timeline. Since mimir and the real Tyr are back, they might know they way out of the 9 realms
i fucking love Mimir, hes a gold mine of knowledge and stories
“Nice argument, Senator. Why don’t you back it up with a source”
“My source is that I made it the f**k up!”
Kratos trying to enjoy the story: “my wolves. Have gone crazy.”
Santa Monica, apparently. 😉
Last god of war game ends with Kratos finding the Santa Monica writers room. Lol
The last god of war game has Kratos going full Deadpool kills the marvel universe on Santa Monica
Hes not norse he's celtic from Scotland
@@livingglowstick1337 Only in the game.
i'm glad to see somepeople is also doing the same thing as i do when mimir starts telling story 😂
The dude always seems to start his stories exactly as I go to pull up to me destination. And I can't just *NOT* head his witty anecdotes, so there's easily an hour of gameplay where I just set the controller down so he can blather on about riddles or something.
1:21 you’re welcome
You spin my head right round with those turns 😵💫
And now it's about time to read this play after so many years spent waiting for a motivation.
Just go to senior year high school English class.
If you want a good telling of it, I recommend the Fictional podcast, it's not as boring as the actual play at least in my opinion :) I listen to it on spotify but you can pretty much listen to it wherever
I like how this means that Shakespeare's plays are canonical to God of war.
The circling around the loot not hitting it touches me on a spiritual level
I like that the end implies that Mimir IS Shakespeare
Funny thing there's a rumor that Shakespeare's head is missing from his grave IRL, I don't know if it's true but it's something I've heard
i never understood the plot even when it was a focus in class thks mimir for a understandable summary
It’s really cool they’ve actually made Shakespearean lore canon in the GoW Universe lol
Mimir knows how to tell a story. A hell of a narrator, that one.
Please let us eventually get an Egyptian adventure, or maybe even an Aztec one.
If Kratos thought Thor punching the World Serpent so hard it flew back in time was insane just wait till he learns about a world that went through five different suns.
I like the idea that Puck has either seen, heard, or was a part of pretty much every mythological story
This is very odd, since Macbeth is based on a real series of events. It effectively places the entire god of war story after those events.
Almost like it happened in the 12th century and Scandinavian looked like this also the story isn't based of real events the real macbeth was a good king who gained the throne properly
Mimir: tells story
Kratos: Perfect time for sled donuts
Had to watch this several times because I was distracted by the player circling a barrel for 20 seconds
Hearing the Phrase physical or magic is bringing back some memories of baldur
This was funny to hear because in school in my English classes we read about Macbeth and it's an interesting story kinda sad too.
I tried to read it at school but couldn't understand what was happening in it
This makes me wonder how many times between games Mimir mentioned Baldur's Invulnerability to all threats, Physical or Magical
So he really is Scottish, lad :D
another clip i saw just this morning had Mimir craving haggis after smelling Tyr's stew
Literally in the last game he said he was a faerie so obviously he’s puck serving Oberon
Mimir is so smart he knows the plot to a play from 1000 odd years in the future
Plot twist: Mimir lives long enough to become Shakespeare, with the real Shakespeare as a front because he’s still just a talking head
1:12 We're trying to do the new GOW emblem in the sands or was that just an accident?
"... and a name so cursed none dare speak it." Ha, cute!
also subtle thing Atreus mentions that Mimir should write the stories down, is a allusion to the fact that much of Norse mythology is lost or rewritten. Almost all we know of it comes from one text and oral tradition.
I saw someone mention somewhere that Ragnarök might even be a Christian invention. The idea being that there's no reason to worship dead gods, or gods fated to die
Hey, my 12th grade reading assignment has returned to haunt me in game form
When I heard this i may or may not have also said "physical of magical"
It’s ironic, I actually just finished reading MacBeth in my English class a month back, so it’s ironic that this is only now in my FYP
My theater class has an entire ritual that you have to do if you ever dare speak the name of the Scottish play, you have to do a circle around the auditorium while speaking this chant that I don’t remember
as a literature student im ashamed of myself for not recognising this
So I know people say the next game will deal with Egyptian mythology, but judging by all the references to English legends and Celtic folklore and myths, I personally place my money on Celtic mythology being the next step.
@@morganr9825 well Ra did try to kill all of humanity and Set is a dick
@@john_smith1907 For a fact, Toth is an ally of Kratos
Egypt might be a prequel since Kratos already visited that place in the comics.
Atreus can go to Celtic pantheon to look for giants. That would make sense.
i dont really know to much about celtic mythos thats why i would want to see that. we see eguption mythos everywhere now so i wouldnt say it gets bland and boring but i would want to see some other mythos to and celtic isnt as much represented in media unless i just dont know about it . either way both are cool i just kinda want to see celtic a little more
Man U have the dogs a vertigo fr making them go round and round
AAAAAAAAAAAAAAA HOT POTATO OFF HIS DRAWERS, PLUCK TO MAKE AMENDS!
I still can’t believe they put this in. That’s hilarious.
Mimir is somewhere in Hel watching it through projection tear in his eye "Well Done, laddie"
He says "i wish i could give you a standing ovation but, well, Those times have passed"
A few details that others have pointed out but I want to put in one comment:
Mimir is saying this really happened instead of just being a play, meaning Macbeth (and perhaps more Shakespeare?) is canon to GoW.
Macbeth’s name being cursed isn’t from the story itself. It’s a real life theater superstition that you can’t say the name “Macbeth” in the theatrical world or else you’ll have bad luck.
This got me up off my chair cheering I love it
Wait.... Are they implying that Mimir is GODDAMN SHAKESPEAR?!.... Yeah, I can buy that.
Considering one 90s Disney Show which litteraly added every god or spirit from folklore and shakespeare, Odin and aces included. Even Macbeth. This would be interesting, that Mimir decided to live like human as Shakespearex just like Puck or Titania.
Goodfellows, they called us. Like, you'll like this sprite, he's a *good fellow*
AHHH! Hot potato, orchestral stalls puck will make amends!!!!
Speaking of the Macbeth play i just go done finishing it in school so to find this right after is amazing
Odin is basically like Macbeth with traits of Emperor Palpatine, Tony Soprano, Norman Osborn, Walter White, and Dutch van der Linde thrown in the mix.
Makes sense since he’s puck from a midsummer night’s dream. Maybe all Shakespeare plays are connected
I'd like to see Mimir talking about Romeo and Juliet. You know, since Atreus asked Mimir about Thrud and crushes
Atreus: Mimir.... I have a question.... Let's say hypothetically I fall in love with someone different like say... Thrud? I mean.... I'm a giant and... demigod..... while Thrud's an Aesir..... You think.... that love is possible?
Mimir and Kratos could make a fortune selling these stories to bards and playwrights once the events of ragnarok cool down.
Mimir is Shakespeare confirmed
For a second it sounded like Dune then I was like nah man thats macbeth lol
I can't believe these games went from QTEs of fucking Aphrodite off screen to weaving Macbeth references into the dialogue while you're traveling
How did I not realize this, when this game came out I was studying MacBeth in my Honors English 🤦♂️
If you played gow3 theres actually a quote from Macbeth, from Hermes's boss fight, he quotes "The spartan lights the way to a dusty death" this echoes Macbeths speech where he also quotes "And all our yesterdays have lighted fools
The way to dusty death. Out, out, brief candle!"
Macbeths also referenced as the character of baldur "immune to all threats physical and magical" and Macbeth being"immune to all man born of woman"
I hope Lunda can whip up a new body for Mimir if shes so inclined to do so, that way Mimir can get to writing all those stories.
I knew this “physical or magical” part was coming before Mimir was about to finish it, and I said it at the same time with Kratos and Atreus. 😄 It’s funny how after four years since playing GoW before Ragnarok, it felt like it was like the first five times I heard him say that.
This willl really help wid my English lit paper on Macbeth
Are you trying to make me dizzy lol
"Back in my homeland...." , says Mimir in his Scottish accent.😅
Honestly, because of the environment I thought it was a Dune reference
I didn’t even put it together that this was Macbeth.
Funny how Mimir said he tries when atreus told him to write these stories down, as he actually was in the beginning of the game before he spits out the brush when you first see him. Either that or he was painting, idk.
I read the title wrong at first so I read "mimir tells Kratos about Micah bell"
Funny they do this because the Gesta Danorum (what the movie Northman is based on) is what directly inspired the writing of Hamlet ;)
Physical and Magical, both son and dad join forces to troll the smartest head alive
I mean Mimir is literally Puck from A Midsummer Night's Dream, so this implies that Shakespeare's fantasy plays were all adaptations of stories told or inscribed by Mimir.
What I like is that Macbeth is a Scottish play, and that while Mimir’s homeland is Vanaheim….he’s clearly Scottish so “my homeland” still tracks
thanks GoW for helping me revise Macbeth for my English mock.
