If I were an animal living in Africa or in some dense American forest surrounded by bears, wolves, lynxes, bobcats and eagles, I think that I would like to be a porcupine. They have the most amazing defense---almost impenetrable.
now that u mention it, cats will naturally prey an anything that turns their back on them, so maybe they think porcupines are easy prey since they turn their back to point their spikes.
@@xCoffeeNWeedx Actually a very intriguing theory you got. It's like the porcupine is an anomaly to them since they are so used to prey animals becoming easier targets when they turn their back to them. Au contraire the porcupine though lol
Leopards want food - food want's to survive - For me, it's always a wonderful example of how animals have had to adapt in order to stay alive long enough to ensure another generation of - either porcupine or leopard! I walked into a mess the other other day - quills all over the place, and a discarded carcass of a porcupine - the marks on the ground suggested lion - the quills on the ground showed a real struggle. The Kruger always shows great lessons.
Neil, I thought at first, when the leopard lay on its side and tried to reach in low, that he was going to flip the porcupine. This video shows why porcupines are still around and why they don't have to hurry. Your minimal commentary is right on.
The leopard is mechanic going under your car .its amazing how smart the feline family is .the leopard knows when he has to use stealth, speed,or be strategic like with the porcupine.simply amazing
LMFAO! I love the how the leopard looks around after taking a stab and failing at 2:50 like "Oh shyt! Ya'll didn't see that did you? Ok because I meant to do that. So yea! I wanted that to happen. Just in case the cameraman got that. What that really was was me just being smooth right there because I like quills."
***** No, he doesn't. I know what video you're talking about as I've seen it before and it's a different leopard and a different porcupine than this one. That video was posted this year and this video was posted several years back and by a different UA-camr.
***** How the fuck am I captain grammar? I spelled "Write" incorrectly in my own fucking post, you weirdo. Look at my last post.I wrote to you: "Write" is spelled "right" as in right or left. I didn't spell the correct version of it. So how the fuck am I captain fucking grammar if I'm spelling words wrong?
***** Hahahahaha! I know! I thought we were just picking on each other because that's how people usually greet each other on UA-cam. We start out by fighting a little bit and picking on each other and then we go into how your day was and vice versa and then go are separate ways.
Most animals would find it difficult to defend themselves against multiple predators, however, I have seen a porcupine successfully defend itself against 5 lions (although they were young) In this video, the porcupine uses warning noises by rattling its quills - the noise is probably as effective as the quills. The Bearded Heron
At least the leopard wasn't stupid enough to full-on pounce the porcupine! It looks like he got caught a couple of times in the paw and face, and finally said, "Man that's it, I'm outta here!"
Wow, this is amazing. Seeing a porcupine and a leopard on their own is hard enough but to see them interacting like this is one in ten million. Great stuff.
Pain makes leopards even more determined, that's why the quills didn't deter it. But the porcupine also enjoys the battle, that's why it didn't scurry off while the leopard with pulling quills from its paws.
I think they lean over to be able to bite the fleshy part...but the porcupine is all rounded with the spikes ...look at the fascinating intelligence on both
I think this may have been a young leopard that wanted to play. If you single frame @2:48 (use the > key, < for back, you'll see a couple of frames where the leopard has what appears to be a white mouse? He offers it to the veggie Porky. No deal, he plays around a bit (or touches for soft spots) then takes a few to finish his mouse.
Play is essential for young animals, however, this leopard was not simply playing. The leopard has either learnt or instinctivly knows that porcupines can be dangerous. Leopards stay with their mothers for approx. 12 months before they move off (solitary) although some do spend an additional 6 months or so sharing moms knowledge and kills. This leopard is an adult leopard (albeit young) and certainly made a wise decision in the end.
Obviously, given that the leopard laid down into a submissive position, it shows he/she was only interested in playing - hopefully a new friend. Porcupine did not understand that, I am sure.
Actually the leopard was trying to swipe underneath the quills at the feet and hind legs of the porcupine so it couldn't turn around as fast. Notice how he circles the porcupine to see if it is tiring. He would kill and eat that porcupine in a heart beat, he just didn't have the patience to wear it out.
Mark Lorence Munsayac Why can't I be serious about such a thing? Have you not seen birds & cats, cats and mice, cats & dogs playing together? All of nature is not always adversarial.
Yes he was watching the humans who he KNOWS are more dangerous than the porcupine! Having the choice between the porcupine and gun carrying humans, he was smart and chose the porc!
Although he might have been very hungry, I'm PREEETY sure there are better choices of prey than a porcupine! That leopard, he must have learned now that porcupines aren't even considerable as prey!
Dont listen to them this is actually a great question. The quills or spines have rough thorn like structures on them that get stuck in the skin or muscle and then they get pulled out of the porcupines back (not painfully) because the thorns hold it in the skin
it looks more like when a cat tries to play with a mouse then hunting, the leopard wanted to make a toy out of the little guy but quickly realized that wasn't gonna happen.
Miauw.....what a cat.....probably wasn't hungry enough. Normally these cats can handle a few pin pricks...Anyway... unlike the quills of the North American porcupine, these have no barbs, and fall out easily...there's a risk of infection though.
Why does the gesture of that leopard look like he's trying to cuddle that giant spiky fluff ball instead of attacking it. You also found it cute right, leo-chan?
No they can't, a Porcupine does NOT shoot out its quills. Instead, they thrash their bodies into incoming predators and only SOMETIMES will the quills fly out. Even then, it almost never hits any animal and usually lands in the ground.
What is it with Leopards and porcupines?! Like seriously are they mortal foes? Why is it always the leopard trying to go after them. Other animals caught on quickly to leave em alone. But those darn leopards just won't get the memo!
No, they don't shot, in opposition of most of people think. When in danger, the porcupine's body produces adrenaline making the spines more flexible and loose. When the predator attacks, then the spines are just left without being shot. I faced one today and I study many animals. Regards.
