I live in Atlanta and attended a lot of Hawks games in those years and loved Nique and Bird. I was a Bird fan since his early college days when I got to see him play in person. So this game was SO hard for me. Two players that never ever cheated the fans, the both always played their butts off and played to win every game.

And he injured his thumb on his shooting hand the summer before reporting to the Celtics. Said he never had the same feel for the ball after that injury. Can you imagine what he would have done without that and the back injury? The back injury he got shoveling when putting in a driveway for his mother. He played injured from then on.

"You are watching what greatness is all about" = a perfect description of Bird and his desire and tenacious appetite to win games!!! The determination of Nique was something to marvel at as well, being guarded by McKale long armed Frankenstein built dominating like he did then on other end trying to stop Larry. A very gracious Dominique Wilkins. He did the same for the Hawks; better, even. Unfortunately, he was on the wrong team, had the wrong GM, etc. but no sour grapes. Just respect. His focus is on Bird while describing the greatest game of his own career. It's really quite remarkable the esteem he holds Bird in: watch his anger at JJ Reddick for bad mouthing Bird recently and calling him overrated. As amazing as he was as a player, he was a bigger man.

Dominique is such a humble and gracious sportsman. He has no big chip on his shoulder. He doesn't talk about how well HE played in that game, which he ABSOLUTELY DID. He was spectacular. The Celtics just had more, better players around him than Nique did. And they pissed Larry off for no reason and he made them pay. • @nathanrobinson3653
    @nathanrobinson3653 5 місяців тому +7

Bird, with the myth of how slow he is, and how he couldn't jump, and all--lol. His basketball IQ, skill, positioning and efficiency, allowed him to overcome all that, along with the bone spurs in both ankles and an injured back. He also had double achilles tendonitis in both ankles in his career, as well, and had to have surgery. He found a way to win a jump ball against Hakeem Olajuwon, broke up more 2 on 1s and 3 on 1s on defense than probably anyone, and could shoot with his off-hand and throw full-court in bounds dimes off an opponent made FG in a way no one else ever could. His left hand was probably better than many guys' right hand. He understood spacing, help defense, and knew how to move with and without the ball, and where to be. He couldn't be stopped by anyone or anything and could always get his shot off even if he told you what he was gonna do--he was that good. Bird's skills are 1st rate. He did it all and beat the best of the best. Dominique's team would have won or at least competed for multiple titles in any other decade--just like Milwaukee and New York--those were great teams that never got the chances they would have if it weren't for Larry Bird. Notice no mention of Michael--his bulls got swept twice and couldn't even break through to be in the discussion those first 5 or 6 years, but those hawks, knicks, and bucks were tough teams, and like i said, if it weren't for being in the Bird era, they would have been competing for titles, too. 24-10-6 for a career with 3 titles and 3 straight MVPs, in the most dominant, talented, loaded era in the history of the game--population 1--Larry Bird. Biggest turnaround in any team's win percentage-all time record-Larry Bird with Boston-from 29-53 (1978-79 no Bird) to 61-21 (1979-80 got Bird), and that was his rookie year- +32 wins. He is the GOAT for all-around, complete game--points, rebounds, assists, blocks, steals, and defense. Look at the all-time rankings if you don't believe me. It isn't even arguable anymore. I don't care about awards, volume scoring on volume attempts in losing efforts, dunking, posterizing, vertical leap, acrobatics or multiple titles in a dead era of competition, beating teams who never won anything and claiming to be the all-time team--Boston went 99-4 at home over 2 seasons against the best competition the league ever had. I just care about winning and basketball played within the framework of 'TEAM'--unselfish, move the ball, play defense, high percentage shots, everyone contributes, and win. When I ask people who their GOAT is, 9 times out of 10 I can say, Bird is a better shooter, passer, and rebounder than them. Then they say, well my guy is a shooting guard--they don't get blocks and assists or rebounds. Then I say, there are GOAT candidates that did it all, regardless of their position--they don't make those excuses. Guys like Bird, Wilt, Hakeem--they did it all. Wilt and Hakeem had no problem with assists and steals. Bird had no problem with anything. Could your GOAT do it all like these guys could? I doubt it. Look at the all-time career averages and learn truth. Guys will say, well Bird wasn't a good defender. Folks, Bird was an elite defender. He led the league in defensive win-shares 4 seasons and is ranked 61st all-time. Because Jordan is ranked 110th all-time on that same list, you shouldn't really say Jordan was better--I know he won the awards for 1st team all-defense and DPOY, but the career ranking isn't a league award--it is statistical and historical, not an award tainted with popularity. You don't have to like Bird, just understand all the things he did as it pertains to winning every year he played in, and the fact he won every year he played and was always a threat for a title. When Magic, said there would never be another Larry Bird, I didn't get it back then, and I was a huge Bird fan. I understand now what he meant. Larry did stuff that wasn't done before him, and hasn't been done since. He played the game like no other and saw the game like no other. He was tough unlike any other (please don't tell me about Mike having the flu--the flu isn't a fractured vertebrae and a turtle-shell brace with 46-16-12-4-2 with 2 bad ankles coming off surgery). He hustled. He dove over tables and chairs for loose balls at 6'10", up by 12, with 4 minutes to go. He got everyone involved. He was the first to practice, and the last to leave. He talked trash as an art form. He embraced every intense, high stakes moment and never, ever backed down and would fight anyone whenever necessary. I didn't know how spoiled we really were just getting to see Larry play. He had rivals. Today's league is full of 'besties'--I bet that makes Larry sick.. You play to win--not to be good friends and form a superteam. Those are weak moves for weak players who can't elevate those around him. Bird elevated DJ, Ainge, McHale, Parish, and got the most and the best out of them when they joined the team. Bird won that first title in 81 without Ainge, without DJ, and with a rookie, non-starting McHale.. Next time someone disrespects Bird's game, slap 'em in the face for being an ignorant, casual fan who doesn't get a GOAT vote.

All the youngsters of Today's internet. Like to talk out both sides of their mouths. They piss on 80s and 90s players....their GO to is Today's players are soooo much more athletic. Jokic is a Top 3 center of all-time let them tell it. Jokic is Grilling these uber Atheletic players of Today's NBA 😂😂
None are more athletic than Dominique.
Yet you saw the "Plumber" Larry Bird dribble drive past him in the 4Q like he was a statue.
These kids have no idea about true athleticism. They definitely cant grasp that BBall intelligence allows players to beat athleticism absent intelligence and or fundamentals. K. Willis is more athletic than easily 75% of Today's NBA.....yet they never put him on Bird because it would be BBQ Chicken 🐔
      Bird roasted "Athletes" .
Also it's funny how when it counted Bird was deadly with 3pt shots.
When all you do is watch highlights and read stats you tend to not know what you're talking about.....
So the Majority of 35 and under have no clue when trying to argue the Skills of NBA players from different eras.

Hey, man, been checking out your Bird stuff, and I'd like to answer your GOAT question before I watch the video. Is Larry The One? Here's where I get weird, because while I wouldn't argue against it, I can say that about a number of top players. So I put it this way: If I was drafting a dream team from the entire history of NBA players, against a group of owners the size of the current NBA, I'd use my first pick to get Larry, if possible.
That's for two reasons, the first being that if I have him, I'll never have to face him. The second's because of who he was as a player, so the rest WILL play as a team, move the ball selflessly, and go after the other guys relentlessly. Those who don't like it will find out that he can act as his own enforcer, and not just through violence. GOAT, I can't say, but in a situation like that, he's the must-have MVP. That's a statement of a different sort. Keep on truckin', sir!

    Ola StackMan,
Here are two missing columns that have never listed on any Score Sheet or Statistics Sheet simply because they have never existed, "Hustle" and "Playing Injured." These are two facets of the game that are rarely ever discussed or considered when the subject of who the GOAT contenders are, as well as "Hall Of Fame" nominees. I think these two subjects should always be given serious consideration.
Here's a list of his inhuries:
    - Bad Lower Back
    - Fractured Right Cheekbone
    - Heel Spurs (both feet requiring
    surgery)
    - Broken Right 4th Finger
    (permanently deformed)
    - Ruptured Achilles Tendons, Right
and Left Legs (both requiring surgery)
These are just the injuries I know of that I noted from videos. Bird may have had more injuries that he played with, I don't know. Ciao.

But they say he wasnt athletic...
His Achilles were so painful he had to abandon his unstoppable step back fadeaway and come up with another shot, left handed hook, not for some meaningless game in December but for a Game Seven in the East final.
But they say he wasnt athletic...

I was a Laker fan my whole life, until the Sonics moved to OKC. I HATED Larry Bird. But I can give credit where it's deserved, he was a BAD BOY!!!! (I only hated the players that hurt my team, breaking my heart. LOL. Now I'm officially an old man, I enjoy watching greatness, even if they are playing against my fav team.)

I watched Bird and Magic. That was the first time I cared about pro ball. Never watched the bad boy pistons. Started watching the Bulls in 1990. Jordan retired and I quit watching the game again until he returned. Doubt I missed anything. Watched Shaq and Kobe. Watched D Wade and Shaq. All those players retired and there is no one left worth watching. I watch maybe 2 games a year now. (Luka and Jayson Tatum)

Dominique was a monster who could crucify most other players - he wasn't called "The Human Highlight Film" for nothing!
Can you imagine todays players going up against the '80's players if they were allowed the physical contact they they were so used to back then? Today's clowns would quit within the first few minutes.

I am a Hoosier and was around the game in the 80s. I saw Bird in person from 3 feet a couple of times. He was much bigger than 6-9. I was around a 7 footer all the time who I went to school with. I know big when I see it. I don't know how tall he was. But he was not 6-9 he was huge in person.
